Development Squad – Heatmaps Preview

Update Four of our summer development programme is imminent, so I thought I’d bring you an early preview of the new feature introduced in this round of changes – the Fantasy Football Scout heatmaps.

While you may be familiar with the use of heatmaps in football as a means of displaying player touches in a single match, we wanted to go further.

As our members know, we enable our Opta data to be displayed per match, across the season or indeed over a number of intervals. These include all home or away matches, or even the last two, four and six matches or Gameweeks – home or away.

By ensuring that our heatmaps could also be built and displayed for these intervals, we were able to increase their scope significantly.

Firstly, this meant that would could create meaningful heatmaps for events other than just touches.

Because we could visualise data over a group of matches, or even the season, there was some real value in mapping events such as shots, chances created and passes received, among others.

These really came alive when we built heatmaps into our comparison tools.

This enables us to view patterns in player behaviour – analysing queries such as “where has Alexis Sanchez received passes in his last four home matches, compared with away matches”.

The answer is below.
Alexis Sanchez Passes Received Last Four Home vs Last Four Aways
members

As you can see, Sanchez received the majority of his passes out on the left flank over his last four away matches, while he took up more central positions when receiving the ball at the Emirates.

This is the kind of analysis that is now possible, confirming information that has been difficult to decipher or collect previously – other than by watching all of Sanchez’s previous matches, of course.

But our heatmaps can also be applied to teams and, in this way, Fantasy managers can analyse pairings created by forthcoming fixtures and attempt to identify areas of strength and weakness.

For example, AFC Bournemouth travel to West Brom for Gameweek 1 and, analysing their heatmaps for last season (all matches), we can find some areas of potential for the visitors.

West Brom Challenges Lost vs Bournemouth Successful Take-ons – 2016/17 Season
members

West Bromwich Albion’s lost challenges are mapped on the left, indicating that they were more susceptible to being beaten by attackers on the right-side of their defence.

Equally, if we look at Bournemouth’s map of successful take-ons – when a player beats his defender – we see that the Cherries are particularly strong down their left flank.

We can therefore deduce that West Brom’s Craig Dawson may be targeted by Ryan Fraser and Charlie Daniels in this match and that they may get some joy in this area, perhaps even some Fantasy returns.

These are just two examples of how the feature can be used to improve your analysis of teams and players.

I’ve also produced a preview movie showing further cases and illustrating the heatmaps in action.

Heatmaps are currently on our test server and will be made available to our members as part of Update Four, which is due to go live later this week.

Really interesting stuff, without watching the video do you have the ability do normal heat map stuff too? So average position by team etc.

Yes. All the regular stuff. Touches for full teams and players per match, groups of matches or the season. That's shown in the movie for Man City vs Watford on final day.

Really good team. Not sure I'm brave enough to go without Kane, but I like the rest of it. Pretty sure I'll be going 4-3-3, just trying to work out whether to go for 4 strong defenders, or 3 strong and 2 ok ones to rotate. I'm not keen on having a non-playing defender as my sub, but I guess this formation allows you the flexibility of bringing in a midfielder if needed.

      Agree about Yoshida over Dawson.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    Your top punt for FPL

Already our first RMT surgery article has created a number of talking points. Who is the best third striker? Which 4.5 midfielder is best? Can four or even five at the back prevail?

The one I'd like to find out more about though is around your best punt in your team.

With the likes of Kane and Lukaku in many teams the search for a differential away from the template is become difficult.

Who is your low owned, under the radar gem that you think will hit the ground running and provide you with a points and price boost?

Mine is John Stones - with two goals and an assist in pre season - and presumably nailed on in Pep's 3-5-2 formation (as they only have three CBs). Only 3.6% ownership.

Who is your low owned differential punt and why?

You are the second person to glaf up Blind today - undoubtedly great for bonus but why do people think he will play? I'd love to know as he'd be ideal as a ManU defender for me.

I'm interested in two Germans from the promoted teams as punts - Löwe from Huddersfield and Groß at Brighton.

Löwe is absolutely nailed at left-back for the Terriers, who have a decent run of fixtures to begin the season, and there's the possibility he's on penalties. I really like David Wagner and think he might have a plan which will see Huddersfield surprise a few this season.

Groß comes with a reputation of really good creativity statistics in the bundesliga, despite playing for a relegated team. Looks set to play the number 10 role for Brighton and has put in promising performances in pre-season.

I've my eye on Gros for GWK 3....fixtures get much better then. Don't fancy Btb v City or Lei early on.
Willian to Gros a possibility for me then. Times well with Hazard's return too.

Seems a sensible plan. I've talked myself into having him from the off, so fingers crossed City are a bit leaky at the back with everyone piling forward. I'm not convinced by them defensively, even when Konpany is fit to be honest.

Oh, and another punt to start the season would be Trent Alexander-Arnold Jonty! (Scoutcast call-back) 😉

Mine are Tabby Abraham and Ward-Prowse.. With Llorente away at the outset, I expect Abraham to step up. "on loan from Chelsea" promises a lot for someone aiming to flourish... Similarly, if Ward-Prowse will make a leap sometime in his career, it will be this year... So I am happy to have him as my 4th midfielder...

      Rolando Aarons - 4.5 mid
This lad has real potential, struggled with injuries over the last couple of years. Trained all over the summer to stay fit and has looked lively in pre-season.

Only downside is he will be competing with Richie and Atsu for the wing positions so have to assume he will have to oust Atsu before becoming 1st choice down the left.

        • 7 Years

Aarons has 0.4% ownership (all geordies)

The more orthodox choice would be Tom Carroll - 4.5 mid
        4.3% ownership
If Siggy goes he will be on some set pieces - 100% nailed to play. Can only see him becoming more and more popular as the season goes on.

Agree but was kind of hoping for more than that.

The difficult market seems to be the problem.

I had hoped to be feeling optimistic of a top half finish this year but actually Im not sure we are capable of that currently.

2 more good signings and I could change my mind though.

                • 7 Years
                6 years, 8 months ago

The market is ridiculous. The fact we're without a year's TV money doesn't help matters.

Player/club demands don't help either. Sure I read that the reason we didn't get Abraham was due to Chelsea wanting us to play him for 75% of games or something like that. Financial penalties if we failed.

Rumours about Perez and Vazquez - both seem extremely unlikely sadly.

I think finishing around 12-14th is achievable, but that assumes Gayle can step up or Mitrovic can gain consistency and maturity.

      For me it's:

3rd striker: Austin/Gayle. I'll have Austin if it looks like he will start.
Would like to have Benteke but he's just a bit too expensive for my team. He could be gold with his first 3 fixtures, especially the Huddersfield one looks great. But saying that I've been burned by him before 😉

4.5mid.: Carroll. Looks to be nailed and maybe even on some set pieces. With him I'll probably "enjoy" some pts on the bench again after benching Capoue for each of his haul last year...

differential: Currently me team is very template but the one I'm looking at is Boufal. Apparently he did well so far in pre season, so could be worth the gamble to free up some funds. Same goes for Pereyra.
Another one is maybe Fraser but his 5.5 price tag makes it difficult to get a replacement if he fails.

Arsenal are a strange one. They often look a shambles defensively but come the end of the season tend to be up there in terms of clean sheets. Totenham on the other hand tend to look really solid but conspire to concede a goal when a clean sheet looks assured! I take the point about the lack of Koscielny making clean sheets less likely though, just seems worth an early season gamble that can be easily sorted with my inevitable early wildcard.

Once the pressure is off Arsenal they are better, theres a point every season where they are just like we have no chance of winning the Premier league (normally around GW8) so they just fade into obscurity. Then when its offical that they have lost the pl they find some form

A good relationship with King already, and with another natural goal scorer in Defoe to aim for in the box.

Is city's defence going to improve for clean sheet potential this season.
I had stones at the start of last season and massively regretted it. I know he has had a good pre season, but I fell into that trap with Gray last year also.
Walker was great and under priced for Spurs last year, but with the price hike and move to city he is not a bargain anymore. So he would need clean sheets to match last season (14 clean sheets in a Spurs side with a great defensive record for the season) to justify that price.
Kompany is always a transfer waiting to happen but great when he is fit.
Mendy at the same price as Walker will have the same risks and is new to the PL.
Danilo is new to PL and is not a sure starter but may steal starts of some of the other city defenders.
City did keep more clean sheets with Otamendi in the team last year, but he offers little attacking returns.
All of city's defenders will be competing for starts and Pep will rotate through the season.
On the upside a change in GK may reduce the number of goals conceded and boost clean sheets.
City will win a lot of games this season, but I don't think many will be 1 - 0 wins. There attacking threat looks amazing and they are sure score a lot through the season, but I can't find a good reason to select a defender for them from the start.

Jordan Ayew, 5.0M. Swansea played with two up top during their good form period at the end of last season. Ayew got 5 goal contributions in 800 mins or so and was important in helping them avoid the drop. With Llorente expected to miss the opening few gameweeks he should partner Abraham in their 4-1-2-1-2 formation.

He is a fantastic enabler imo

Pascal Groß - Nailed on, cheaper than Knockaert, very creative, may have set pieces and his chance creation is up there with Eriksen, Ozil and KDB.

Jordan Ayew - Mainly an enabler but seems nailed on, especially with Llorente missing the first two games. Pace might unlock defences.

      Tadic (Currently owned by 4.2%)

If Southampton can get off to a good start and Tadic can get back to his 2015/16 season form (8 goals, 13 assists) then I think Tadic could be a steal at 6.5 million.

The other one would be Austin (owned by 2.5%)

If Austin is the regular first choice striker every week then I think he could have a 20+ goal season if he stays healthy.

Ignoring someone because we have been burned by them in the past is a bit silly really, so I agree with Stones as a pick. In a similar vein, I am keen to have Andre Gray if he's starting.

JWP. Allways been fantastic at dead balls, and will (hopefully) be a first team regular.

Pretty similar team to your Jonty, but downgrading Zaha to JWP gives me DDG and Kompany instead.

      Fabregas for me.
Getting overlooked for Willian who has always been a rubbish FPL option, even when he was Chelseas player of the season.
With Bayokolo out and Fabregas's form, he's a shoo in to my team for the start of the year. Hopefully he can put in some strong performances and cement his place, if he doesn't, I'll just get rid. Plenty of upside there for 7m.

      Aaron Mooy for £5.5m

Huddersfield have a kind first six games and he is their nailed playmaker.

Third across Championship for key passes last season, reached double figures for assists and will be on set pieces.

Based on last season, likely Huddersfield may tackle Premier League similarly to Blackpool. They'll prioritise attacking and scoring goals over defence.

I think Shaqiri will offer amazing value this season if he's able to stay fit. Currently in my team but not sure I'll start with him as the fixtures are a bit tough.

For the third striker spot I'd keep my eyes on Andre Gray. Burnley are a decent team and think Gray can really do some damage this season.

I'm giving Gabbiadini another chance. Less than 5% ownership, nice fixtures, easy to replace with Austin or even Redmond/Tadic and go 3-5-2. I really think/hope he will get more pitch time than Austin in the beginning of the season.

In my team, lowest owned is Abraham (3.4%). Low price means he enables invest elsewhere and he can start on my bench. I thought he would easily take the Swans striker position even before Llorente was injured. Now, I'm just even more sure.

Not in my team currently, but still in consideration:
Butland (2.5%). Not see in one RMT. Save machine about to face a lot of shots.
Mawson (1.7%). Goal machine in a reasonably well organised defence.
Ozil (5.3%). I know his price is a little restrictive, but I'm already having visions of defence-splitting throughballs for Lacazette to latch on to.

Currently set up 4-4-2 for GW1 with Abraham on the bench. But I think I can be flexible on formation and am confident of calling on him for a 3-4-3 or 4-3-3 in future weeks.

You'll lose yourself. I ended up spending hours just querying stuff.

When you consider that we've also got data going back seasons. I looked at how Coutinho has evolved for Liverpool for example - it's fascinating to see how he's now receiving the ball in different areas, shooting from different areas etc. It's stuff we imagined but now realised in data form and visualised.
