Fantasy Premier League Rate My Team Surgery

Welcome to the first of this summer’s pre-season Rate My Team Surgeries.

These articles will look at initial Fantasy Premier League squads and will be published ahead of Gameweek 1. Each time one of the FFScout moderator and contributor team will put forward their selection for scrutiny in order to start the discussion.

The aim is to highlight some of the key concerns we have faced in constructing our squads, which hopefully will chime with other FPL managers’ issues.

In addition, we want the comment section to provide a useful opportunity for you to submit your own RMTs. Please also be helpful to those asking for advice. The key to successful rating of teams is to give advice as well.

I have drawn the first straw to start off this series with my balanced 3-4-3 selection.

My Team

Key Concerns

My lack of Manchester United or Chelsea defence is a concern as both sets of players are highly owned. It is the gaping Red Devils shaped hole in my back line that is my biggest issue as Chelsea’s fixtures are not great after their opener at home to Burnley, while Jose Mourinho’s troops early matches look superb. David De Gea or Eric Bailly are targets – although each will need funds to be freed up elsewhere.

De Gea could be a possibility as I’m not wholly convinced by my cheap as chips West Brom goalkeeper double up. Would I be better off going for the Spaniard, or indeed the save points that perhaps West Ham stopper Joe Hart or Watford’s Heurelho Gomes may offer early on?

The third striker spot is a tough one this season. Southampton’s Charlie Austin is there as a place holder currently and I’d be particularly keen to hear arguments for other strikers priced at 6.5 or below or even why I should invest more in this berth.

Nailed On Picks

Flexibility is driving my initial selection – and that for me is why Harry Kane is nailed on. Downgrading an injured or poorly performing Kane is easy, upgrading to the game’s most expensive striker could require surgery or an early wildcard. I’m also not convinced that Dele Alli or Christian Eriksen will match last season’s golden boot winner’s output.

Kevin De Bruyne looks the best attacking Manchester City option for me and is 0.5 cheaper than the only other one I’d consider – Gabriel Jesus. The Belgian looked particularly commanding in City’s 3-0 rout of Spurs in pre-season.

One of Nathan Ake or Charlie Daniels looks essential for me. Bournemouth defenders are among the best FPL resources due to their command of attacking points. Clean sheets are merely a nice extra for them. Both this pair appeal, but currently Ake has the edge as one of the best defenders last season for points per match. He was also 2016/17’s best player in terms of baseline bonus points.

As a Brighton fan I’ve got to have some representation and I believe defence is the main place to find it. With two assists full back Markus Suttner has impressed in pre-season and has even been fielded on the wing at times during matches. Lewis Dunk is another option here  – but his ill discipline concerns me. Also talk of his bonus potential hinges on clean sheets – which I’m not convinced my team will excel at in the top flight. Suttner’s attacking potential gives him the edge for me.

Romelu Lukaku is going nowhere with United’s fixtures and his strong pre-season form. Don’t even attempt to persuade me to ditch him.

The Punt

John Stones is my main punt. I originally had United’s Victor Lindeloff in this place but I’m concerned that he may be eased into Premier League action and miss the odd game at the start. City’s Stones could also be a rotation risk, hence the punt, but with wingbacks set to be deployed I can see him earning starts at first and if pre-season is anything to go by he could also bring me attacking returns. Already he has scored twice and assisted another goal during pre-season. If he can carry on that form his lowly 3.6% ownership and 5.5 price tag could rocket.

Formation

I’ve tried to construct a team around a four at the back formation but it just doesn’t sit right with this dullard. I favour the attacking prospects of midfielders and strikers over the dull ache of disappointment when a defender loses a clean sheet.

I’m currently favouring 3-4-3 but am willing to swap to 3-5-2 should five viable midfielders emerge and the third striker well dries up completely.

    Best 3-way rotation?

In these times of xi consisting of five at the back, I will probably go against the grain with a classic 3-way rotation. In my view, Trippier has too much predicted value to be overlooked. But then what? The United defense has to be covered so for the moment I have DDG due to the uncertainties of the xi. I also have picked Cedric as my second main defender. For Sotons tougher fixtures, I might have to play two of the rotating trio.

The rotating defenders I've chosen are Mee, Dunk and Naughton. It is crucial that the rotating trio are nailed on. Are there anybody else going for the classic 3-way-approach out there? Which defenders have you picked? Has the pre-season given you any hints of a better trio of nailed on gems?

I've looked at this approach (though I'm not currently doing it - see my RMT below your post!). From a personnel perspective I like BRI/BUR/SWA, though there are a couple of weeks (20 and 24) where the fixtures don't work (they've got Chelsea, Man Utd and Liverpool respectively).

I was thinking about BUR/LEI/SWA, with Mee, Morgan/Simpon, Naughton, or BRI/SWA/WAT with Dunk, Naughton, Prodl (if he's nailed), though I'd prefer to have Mee in there if possible.

Assuming that Hegazi starts for West Brom, you can make a nice rotation with him, Johnson from Stoke and Mee from Burnely. Hegazi can be replaced with a 4.5 from Palace, but I am not sure if there will be one. This set up gives you almost all home games vs 2 difficulty teams.

That's a great call from Sugarmonster. If Hegazi is eased in (or if you'd rather have the 8.5m GK combo from West Brom) and there's no-one from Palace, you could go with Mee (BUR), Johnson (STO) and Naughton (SWA) for a pretty decent three-way 4.5m rotation.

    All thoughts appreciated on this:

    Foster, Elliot
    Bailly, Trippier, Cedric, Ake, Mee
    Alli, Coutinho, Fabregas, Zaha, Carroll
    Lukaku, Jesus, Gayle

Not all that set on Gayle - thought about Austin or JRod instead - but his fixtures after the opening game are good enough to give him a go I think. I've also spent a bit more on defenders than I planned to, which is bugging me a bit, but...

I think it offers a lot of flexibility of formation (532, 523, 442, 433, 343), but I'm nervous not having Kane for the reasons Jonty outlines in the article. Played around with Kane/KDB instead of Jesus/Alli, but it means also doing something like Bailly/Gayle to Lindelof/Quaner or Cranie/JRod, which weakens the squad overall.

    Cheers.

For a non-Kane team, it looks about as good as it gets.
Good balance to the side, strong options all over.
My ionly concern would be captaincy, you are going to be very reliant on 'Kaku.
But then again with Sanchez / Haz out, we are all a bit stuck.

      I like it!

        Thanks 🙂

Yes, captaincy is a bit of a concern, but given my poor track record in picking the right player anyway I might just leave it on Kali anyway!

Hopefully we'll get some gems unearthed in the first few weeks and Kane will be more obtainable on a WC.

    RTM please 🙂

    Foster
    Aké Stones Trippier
    Kdb Lofthus Alli Ramsey
    Austin Lukaku Kane

    Myhill Carroll Cédric Suttner

I would love to free up 0.5m which allows for early transfers after some players go up/down in value.

    Thoughts?

What do people make of having a front three of Kane, Jesus and Lukaku.

With those 3 upfront, I am not sure the strength of midfield and def. Too much investment in forwards. Can get better returns by investing elsewhere

meh i've got Kane, Jesus KDB and gone for a budget 3rd striker, so you'd just need to reverse that.
Means a bit less flexibility, but all strong options so could work well.

    De Gea
    Bailly / Cahill / Dunk
Ali / Salah / Ince / Matic (i've popped Matic in in the hope that i'll be able to work the system and have 4 Utd players before he changes from Che on the system - not sure if this will work)
Iheanacho (assuming he goes to Lei) / Lukaku / Kane

    Elliot / Loftus-cheek / Rangel / Hunemeir

Happy with a lot of it but bench is extremely weak - Potential for a lot of change

    Any advice greatly appreciated

      Hm.

I'd lose Cahill, why not just get Luiz for .5 cheaper?
Double United defence is a risk. Get a 4.5 keeper or two and save a bit of money.
Matic is a bad idea, means you wont be able to make any transfers without switching him out + he won't do well, so you will want to.
Ihenacho okay if he moves, but I'd prefer Chicharito.
Bench very weak, i'd look to have at least one playing defender in case of missing defenders (Man U defenders - we are still unsure etc.)

you think cahill is going to keep fluking those goals? I think a bit of regression is due
Matic is a waste of space FPL wise
nacho's got some tricky fixtures, and thats assuming he's a starter

I'd have sleepless nights if this was my team

Was looking great until I got to Mitrovic. He won't play?

I'd downgrade DDG and uppgrade Mitro. J.Rod / Abraham seem good short term options.

Definitely want united cover in defence and DDG is like the full season bet
How about downgrading KDB to Sane and upgrading Mitrovic to Gayle / J.Rod?
Also, is J.Rod guaranteed to play??

hmmm. I am thinking of keeping alonso no matter what. He is a very useful pick at 7m with high potential of both clean sheets & goals / assists. Also almost a sure-starter. Will find funds elsewhere to switch to J.Rod.

Your bench is a real problem, as Mitro/Rangel/Hune all won't play.
You're also looking at starting a defensive midfielder (Romeu) - never a good idea.

Finding it hard to see where all your money has gone! Is this 100m?
If so, I'd look at downgrading Kolasinac to a 5.0m and upgrading Romeyu to a Ritchie/Phillips/Gross

don't agree, especially early on when pre-season wonders get dropped and team lineups are different to what we anticipate.
Important to have 2 playing bench players and particually important to have at least one playing defender as a midfielder cant come on for a non-playing defender.

    My current team is :

    Foster -- Begovic
    Kompany -- Trippier -- Yoshida -- Suttner -- Long
De Bruyne -- Salah -- Fabregas -- Gross -- RLC
    Kane -- Lukaku -- J.Rod

Pretty happy with it, Yoshi/J.Rod the ones i'm chopping and changing, rest seems pretty locked in.

I think its a good team. I would prefer A united defender instead of Kompany although that being said at 6m Kompany has a much greater goal threat than Bailly. I dont know much about Gross what is the reasoning behind that pick? I think Carroll is more nailed than RLC. The rest looks great. I went for Fabregas over Willian too. I think he is more likely to play and is a bigger threat

Willian might not be either if they play two up top and is only nailed short term if not. Fabregas has been promised more minutes by Conte who described him as his main man

I really dislike Willian as a FPL option. Even in his standout season he got paltry FPL returns.
I think Fab is becoming ever more important to Chelsea's cause. He'll start the season with Bayakolo out and could cement his place. If he flops, i'll just get rid. But for 7m, I think he's a bargain.

Yeah that's fair enough. After banging on (with you I might add 😉 ) about #knockaertgw1captain though I'd feel a bit hypocritical if I didn't get a Brighton mid 😉

Well actually, I just really want a Brighton attacker in my team all season and not going near anyone other than Knockaert/Gross!

Suttner looks a great pick, good call. His occasional set piece swings it for me out of our defence.

I don't think I would ever start with it, but 451 is kind of appealing:

    Forster
    Valenica, Kolasinac, Danilo, Trippier
    KDB, Alli, Coutinho, Willian, Tadic
    Lukaku

    Elliot, Tarroll, Abraham, 4.5

    Danilo/Trippier could also be Bertrand.

Its a very smart looking team.

Only issue is that 4-5-1 massively affects your balance in the event more than 1 striker becomes essential. It will either needs hits or a wild card to adjust.

Exactly. Hence why I won't start with it. I'm pretty settled on 433 with 4 wing backs, just deciding between Kane or Alli/Eriksen to start. I've decided to ignore the nagging doubts about Spurs in their new stadium and go for one of them. Just can't decide which...

Looks a nice team but lacks flexibility in the forward line. Altough I guess one hit by downgrading a defender could work

Currently mulling over what the best pricing structure is to use for my squad.
The relative strength in the striker pool (both premium and mid priced), the number of attractive defensive options, and the apparent dearth so far of midfielders in the 5-6m bracket, is swaying me towards a 4-3-3 formation.
Within that, there appears to be a number of options at certain price points: midfielders at 7.0m, strikers at 10-11.5m, and all the goalkeepers between 4.5 and 5.5m.
Therefore, of the options below, which do you feel gives me the best squad balance?

I prefer A as I think Kane is important to have. Him and Lukaku are important for captaincy

Fair point, but I won't be captaining Kane in either GW1 or 2....

I dont see Mawson in alot of teams. The recent article on Swansea highlighted his attacking threat. Swnsea improved defensively under clement and I would imagine will get 10-12 clean sheets. Mawson got 4 goals in just over half a season last year. Could be a nice differential. Fixtures not too bad either as can be seen below. To compare to Dawson from west brom he got 3.5 ppg compared to Dawsons 2.8. Fixtures favour Dawson but if you can set up a good defensive rotation I think Mawson could do very well

So I did a draft league last night, and this is what I ended up with:

    Butland; Grant
    Azpi, Williams, Kompany, Bailly, Mustafi
Fabregas, Alli, Ox, Cabaye, A Ayew
    Aguero, Gray, Welbeck.

The players I'm flexible on are Cabaye, Ayew, Ox & Welbeck. But I don't have a lot of choices or cash flex. Best players available are Long, Jannsen, Mitrovic, Iborra, Albrighton, Can, D Fletcher, Toure, B Davies, Janmaat.

Would you swap any immediately or sit and wait?

Good point. I expect Pep to rotate heavily so I wanted two mids to increase the likelihood of weekly starters in what I anticipate to be a potent offensive squad this year. KDB will certainly work solo until then.

I thought at 5.0 Matic could give me cheap entry in to United's clean sheets and a few assists though I expect Pogba to have the lion's share.

Plan to look at all positions again and compare players at the price points ive set. Budget midfielders will have to be an area to focus on

This is the best I can come up with so far:

    Foster (Elliott)
    Trippier Kolasinac Bertrand (Suttner Long)
    Salah KDB Willian JWP (Carroll)
    Kane Lukaku JRod

Not overly convinced with Willian and JWP, but Willian is my favoured pick of the 7m MFers, while I think JWP could be a shout with their strong opening fixtures.

    Opinions appreciated!

I had Lindelof in my initial few drafts but he had to go, reckon Kolasinac offers more than Bailly would.

Big fan of Alonso (got him at 5.9 last year), but tough opening fixtures for Chelsea, and with Rudiger and Champions League he may not be guaranteed week in week out.

With regards JRod, I think you can discount Southampton strikers as none are going to be nailed, while Chic is definitely worth monitoring - reckon he may need a few weeks however

    Walker Bertrand Trippier Kolasinac
    Ritchie KDB Coutinho
    Lukaku Kane

Have to play a 4.5 each week; Suttner, Chalobah, Hemed, Carroll or could downgrade Ritchie to Fer and upgrade a 4.5 to Milivojevic

    Thinking is 4 attacking defenders
2 heavy mids and 2 heavy forwards all nailed

I'm reluctant to go with a 4th defender with a 4.5 elsewhere, however if you get lucky with your 4.5 and the fact the defenders offer potential attacking and defensive returns, it may pay off

    Foster-Elliot
    Yoshida-Duffy-Mee-Francis-Trippier

I have one player from each of the top 6 sides, however I'm still unsure if that's good right now.
