The Knee Jerk – Gameweek 1 – Friday

It’s almost like turn-based Fantasy Football.

Alexandre Lacazette’s 17.8% ownership will be more than happy with the night’s work from the Frenchman.

His goal and spritely performance was enough to provide comfort and early re-assurance for those who snubbed one or more of Romelu Lukaku, Harry Kane or Gabriel Jesus.

Lacazette scored one, he perhaps could and should have got more. He certainly did enough to indicate that he can justify the 10.5 Fantasy Premier League fee.

His non-owners must acknowledge that Lacazette showed promise, but they will also know that there are more turns to play out.

Jesus will go on Saturday, backed by a 13.6% ownership, with 30.7% of those handing him the captaincy for a trip to Brighton.

Then it will be Kane and Lukaku on Sunday, with the 49% owned Manchester United striker backed by over a million armbands.

Meanwhile, up on Tyneside, Kane will be part of 37.9% of squads and with 55% of his owners trusting him as their skipper.

Those captaincy percentages are telling.

For while Lacazette’s promising performance might already cause some to consider the saving from Lukaku or Kane, it’s significant that the pair are both backed by more than half of their Gameweek 1 owners with the armband.

Lacazette earned the faith of just 29.1% of his managers, with the majority doubtless turning to one of the two big-hitters.

And therein lies the difference.

The Arsenal striker was impressive, but there is plenty of ground to make up before we consider him at the same level as Kane and Lukaku as a captain.

For starters, we will want to assess the impact Olivier Giroud’s dramatic winner.

Once again he sprung from the Arsenal bench to send Arsene Wenger a message. Once again, as we saw with Alexis Sanchez last season, we will wonder if Giroud will eventually gain starts as the central striker, pushing Lacezette into a support role.

To an extent, we have the same worry with Jesus. Sergio Aguero’s presence could eventually shift the Brazilian to a flank or behind the lone striker at times.

How that will impact either striker is unknown. What we do know is that this is not a concern with Lukaku or Kane.

So while Lacazette convinced and demonstrated that he will have a say in our seasons, early talk of Arsenal’s new signing being elevated to their level seems premature.

He has the pair on their toes, and they will need to take their turn to shine.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Thought he looked really sharp. Took the goal well, involved in all round play, nearly had a second that was well saved by schmeicel, played the full 90, involved in the 2nd goal and It seems that arsenal are likely to score a lot.

I thought he looked dangerous enough. It wasn't comfortable viewing as a non-owner and I think he'll get over 20 goals if he stays fit. As I say above, though, I don't think he can be pushed into the same bracket as Lukaku and Kane so it remains to be seen if the saving can be effective. A long long way to go and it was just one performance.

      1. The Royal Robin
        • 8 Years

It all depends on how many Lukaku will get at Utd. Laca could become very popular.

      2. Econ Man
          6 years, 8 months ago

For me the main difference is Lukaku is more nailed. Both are probably on penalties, but I would say Lacazette is more certain to be. In terms of shot production, neither is elite (like Aguero), and both have outperformed xG significantly, making some of us fear regression towards the mean. A positive with Lacazette is that he rotates perfectly with Kane, who is going to be our main captain pick from gameweek 3 onward. It seems to me rotating between a captain from Arsenal and Tottenham would be ideal throughout the season, as they are teams with less rotation than City and United.

Looked ok. Got one and probably should have got another. I think he'll be good for arsenal and will get around 20 goals.

Will have to wait and see how they line up if sanchez comes back. Also, was pushed out wide once giroud came on - and looked quite dangerous in that position.

Wait and see for now me thinks

Good striker but he loves to play Arsenal, always scores and looks dangerous against them. Their defence (or lack of) suits him.

Not saying he won't smash Brighton but it will be interesting to see against more defensive minded teams.

      8. Rover
        • 7 Years

Good enough for me to not want to transfer him out yet, but to continue with my plan to jettison him for Kane for GW3. I truly fear rotation for the central striker role with Giroud and Welbeck in contention, and I think he will end up around the 170 point mark.

        1. Captain Roberto
          • 6 Years
          6 years, 8 months ago

Three can be two central strikers in a 3-4-3 formation. So he may well play every game until Wenger thinks he is fatiguing due to the relentless demands of the Prem compared to French football.

      9. Captain Roberto

I thought he looked great. But then seemed to hide out on the left when Arsenal were seriously under pressure before Giroud turned up and saved them. Should have stayed central and demanded the ball.

Too early to pass a judgement and a lot really depends on what's going to happen in the transfer market. This team is going to create chances and the interplay was neat yesterday. So if he is more efficient than Giroud he should score a lot of goals.

The current leader's team doesn't even make sense. He TC'd Vardy, fair enough. But he started with Mariappa and he has £20m ITB.

Don't worry about it. It doesn't give your team a worse rating.

I thought it was a promising all round performance Ozil and Holding aside.
27 shots to 6. Defence is still wobbly but both centrehalves missing is not easy with a young RB and new LB on the park.
Bellerin could provide a fair few assists on that performance and Ramsey could be an excellent 3rd mid option.
Good to Vardy back playing like we know he can. I wouldn't touch Leicester defence at all on that showing.

Question on Mark, why did you get rid off Danilo? Thanks

Bottled it. Didn't want to play with two potential doubts for GW2. Sane could play LWB in home matches.

          @Luke

Do you really have triple Southampton defence and Aguero, Jesus and KDB? 😯

I have 2 Southampton defenders and Forster myself.

I felt better about when it when i seen a great manager like Luke was thinking along the same lines.

Extreamly dangerous strategy but on the same hand there could be big rewards out of it.

You did really well last year Ogie and I think you were one of the first to triple up on spurs round the Christmas period...I maybe wrong.

Personally I don't mind tripling up on attackers but defenders scare me as one goal and basically all their points are gone. What do you think?

You are dead right it scares me also.

GW1 is a good time to take a risk i think because there is lots of time to fix it if it goes wrong so i went for it.

I really thought it would be Kolasinac's face on the kneejerk article although Lacazette did scare me i dont think i will be rushing over to the transfer page just yet.

He was playing CB and got into some amazing positions. I thought he was excellent. When he starts at LWB he'll be nailed in my side.

Why was Phillips replaced by Danilo in Spot The Differential?
Seen a "provisional squad" without him in, just wondered if it was related.
