The Knee Jerk – Gameweek 1 – Saturday

A classic knee jerk in the making, Mohamed Salah owners were already fidgeting by half-time at Vicarage Road.

Fresh from four goals in pre-season, he had endured an inauspicious start to life back in the Premier League. A toe-poked skyward effort when through on goal, packaged up with several over miscues and errant first touches totalled a miserable first 45 minutes for Salah.

In contrast, Sadio Mane had sparkled and smartly converted Emre Can’s flick to peg back a plucky first half Watford showing.

Shifted to the left flank by Salah’s arrival, it looked as though Mane had adjusted to already demonstrate that he was back as the go-to guy among the opulence in Liverpool’s attack.

But things were to turn dramatically.

Just through sheer pace and endeavour, Salah first won a penalty via Heurelho Gomes’ clumsy telescopic arms and then sprinted to convert Roberto Firmino’s chipped effort from two yards out.

He ended on 11 points and was quickly installed as the top transfer target from those in action on the day.

He tallied five shots, all in the penalty area and eight touches in the box – more than any other midfielder in Gameweek 1 so far. Just as we expected, the statistics are Salah’s friend and will likely reinforce his case throughout the season.

Mane, who picked up a booking, was left trailing and, on today’s evidence, will clearly have his work cut out to justify his billing as the most expensive option in Jurgen Klopp’s armoury.

Owned by 23.5% to Salah’s 23.3%, that narrow gap is closing as Philippe Coutinho owners bail out, turning to the Egyptian as their replacement.

It is, of course, early days and it’s back at Anfield where Mane has previously been so potent.

Nine of his 13 goals arrived on Merseyside last season and he will have Crystal Palace in his sights for Gameweek 2.

Firmino also deserves our recognition. With Klopp relegating James Milner to his bench, the Brazilian was again on penalty duties and expertly converted following Salah’s tumble.

With the assist to follow, Firmino waltzed his way to the maximum bonus points, already benefiting from his new classification as a forward.

If Milner is to remain out of favour – presumably now discounted as a left-back – then Firmino will surely prosper.

Liverpool won eight penalties last season, with all but one converted by Milner. Firmino scored 11 goals regardless.

We have no reason to expect that Liverpool’s penalty count will regress. Indeed, with Salah adding his pace to Mane’s bursts, there’s every chance it will be maintained or even increased.

The conclusion is that Firmino’s stock is on the rise and that suddenly, Mane is in danger of slipping further down our Liverpool attack pecking order.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Not had the best of starts. 37 pts with Kane and Lukaku (c) to go. Still no need to panic as there were a few surprise results today. Alonso, PVA, Zaha disapoints but any other day could be gold (all very attacking and on set pieces. Still above the average atleast.Seasons past I would knee jerk but I put a lot of thought into my team and it deserves the first 2/3 games weeks!

KDB and Iwobi -> Eriksen and Ramsey is tempting me, depending on Spurs tomorrow.

Team is in good shape, however no Spurs may end up being a concern. Do you think it would be worth losing a City attacking asset?

    Here's my team, for reference.

    ----------------Fabianski-----------
    -------Bailly | Stones | Stephens---
    KDB | Mkhitaryan | Willian | Iwobi
    -------Lukaku | Jesus | Firmino---

    Elliot -- Carroll -- TAA -- Long

Salah and Mane should outscore KDB over the season in terms of Points per game simply because goals are 5 points while assists are 3. But the difference won't be very much. Liverpool won't do well against the park the bus teams as well. Don't overreact.

Not sure how he looked in general but his stats are very good from today, reckon he could keep McAuley out of the side and potentially become a pretty massive FF option at £4.5m.

Obviously a transfer right now would be a bad knee-jerk

Fraser's stats from today look interesting against a typically well organised WBA defence.

Most touches and passes in the final third on both teams, 6 crosses, 2 chances created, 3 pen box touches, 2 attempts (1 in box).

Played the whole 90 too, definitely on my radar at £5.5m.

Oh well, he's going to have a great season! I hope his ownership becomes less due to all the fools who are preparing to trade him out.

So with a player like Hegazi doing really well last night, how can we monitor if he is going too certainly make $$ to increase our squad value?
Is there a certain factor in doing so?

he isnt going up, no-one is or has. He will need to either score again or get CS next week to get noticed enough

He could easily go up before GW2.

Players will change price before GW2. Xhaka will increase 0.1 soon.

If I were to make a transfer, it would probably be Francis>Hegazi. Think he's benched McAuley.

Nobody knows the secret formula when players go up but in watching I think there has to be about 100k+ transfers and thinking back their normally slow to go up at the start of the season.
only player on my radar is Ramsey maybe for zaha or willian !!!

People kneejerking in Burnley players but remember: you don't play Chelsea at Stamford Bridge every week.

Arsenal lacked something waiting for someone like Ramsey to step up and take Sanchez's thunder ???

He's looking good if he stays fit, bloody perfect position, basically a 10 if flipping Xhaka does the defensive work. Tempted, very

I'm frustrated. Had double SOU defense (Cedric+Bertrand), Willian, Salah, Kompany. Smooth sailing.

And then Jesus(c) with the handball thing and the offside goal and the missed sitter...and Gabbiadini who screwed up two Bertrand assists too.

So did decently, but could've been hauling...and now have to watch tomorrow's games without a proper captain.

Yeah, I still got Kane as cap, but hey, you never know on GW1, but I enjoyed watching. Mu goal this year is to not take hits, and we'll see how long that lasts,.... hehe

I know it's early days but Alonso looking like a bit of a mistake at that price. I like the rest of my team, but at 7.0 I don't think Chelsea are as good as last season plus no Matic either.

Thinking of downgrading to Kompany actually or possibly Bailly. I like Kola but Gunners don't look good for cleanies.

? Alonso tied for 2nd for shots in the league and tied for 2nd for shots on target. I look at him as clean sheets are just a bonus.
