The Knee Jerk – Gameweek 1 – Saturday

A classic knee jerk in the making, Mohamed Salah owners were already fidgeting by half-time at Vicarage Road.

Fresh from four goals in pre-season, he had endured an inauspicious start to life back in the Premier League. A toe-poked skyward effort when through on goal, packaged up with several over miscues and errant first touches totalled a miserable first 45 minutes for Salah.

In contrast, Sadio Mane had sparkled and smartly converted Emre Can’s flick to peg back a plucky first half Watford showing.

Shifted to the left flank by Salah’s arrival, it looked as though Mane had adjusted to already demonstrate that he was back as the go-to guy among the opulence in Liverpool’s attack.

But things were to turn dramatically.

Just through sheer pace and endeavour, Salah first won a penalty via Heurelho Gomes’ clumsy telescopic arms and then sprinted to convert Roberto Firmino’s chipped effort from two yards out.

He ended on 11 points and was quickly installed as the top transfer target from those in action on the day.

He tallied five shots, all in the penalty area and eight touches in the box – more than any other midfielder in Gameweek 1 so far. Just as we expected, the statistics are Salah’s friend and will likely reinforce his case throughout the season.

Mane, who picked up a booking, was left trailing and, on today’s evidence, will clearly have his work cut out to justify his billing as the most expensive option in Jurgen Klopp’s armoury.

Owned by 23.5% to Salah’s 23.3%, that narrow gap is closing as Philippe Coutinho owners bail out, turning to the Egyptian as their replacement.

It is, of course, early days and it’s back at Anfield where Mane has previously been so potent.

Nine of his 13 goals arrived on Merseyside last season and he will have Crystal Palace in his sights for Gameweek 2.

Firmino also deserves our recognition. With Klopp relegating James Milner to his bench, the Brazilian was again on penalty duties and expertly converted following Salah’s tumble.

With the assist to follow, Firmino waltzed his way to the maximum bonus points, already benefiting from his new classification as a forward.

If Milner is to remain out of favour – presumably now discounted as a left-back – then Firmino will surely prosper.

Liverpool won eight penalties last season, with all but one converted by Milner. Firmino scored 11 goals regardless.

We have no reason to expect that Liverpool’s penalty count will regress. Indeed, with Salah adding his pace to Mane’s bursts, there’s every chance it will be maintained or even increased.

The conclusion is that Firmino’s stock is on the rise and that suddenly, Mane is in danger of slipping further down our Liverpool attack pecking order.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Good morning ladies and gentlemen. An odd request .......

Does anyone know anywhere, and it might be embarrassingly obvious, where I can get a condensed list of the individual weekly scores for just those players who played. So if I take yesterday as an example:- there were 7 matches, so 14 clubs had somewhere between 11 and 14 players who had pitch time. I'm looking for a list of the the scores of just those 154 to 196 players, sorted by club and position.

The reason is that I have written a FF system for a school where the kids don't have an email address - so I cannot use FPL to run the league. Of course I could get these direct from the FPL site but there are nearly 500 players on there and I want to be able to make life easy for transcribing the scores.

    Thanks!

There you go buddy, its a site intended for bonus points but if you click on each game you get the points per player played

I have nothing to offer, except to suggest you re-post your request when there's a larger audience, but not when games are being played. Good luck.

Thank you all for your helpful replies. Just to clarify for such a specific request about pitch time ...... there's a big difference between scoring 0 having played (like Mee yesterday) and 0 without playing. It affects the autosubs functionality.

But you could also sort them for minutes played. At least this week

Out of interest, why haven't you gone the fpl route? I teach primary and I've had children playing the normal game in a school league many times in the past.

I did read your post about email addresses. The first time I did it, I created a load of email addresses and set the fpl accounts up myself. It was a bit of work but surely easier than running your own weekly system. In subsequent years, I just emailed the info to parents and they set up their children's accounts.

FPL site as suggested by others ... coupled with FFS members section would give you everything you want - and you can set up your own list of players to sort by Game Week

I'm saving my transfers for 2FT in GW3 but I'll be monitoring the defences of WBA and Burnley, which were better than I expected. My cheap defensive puts, TAA and TFM were mistakes, not because of the kids, but the shambles that are the Liverpool and Palace defences.

Ramsey, Willian, Redmond, Tadic, Fraser, Brunt, Arnie, Ince, possibly Herrera.

There's an endless list of possible replacements. Just because they didn't score points this gw doesn't mean they won't next gw.

Factor in fixtures and stats and pick one. Easy. 🙂

Was at the game. He was quality. Southampton should've won by 3 or 4 goals and on another day they will. I'd definitely be keeping Saints players.

Abraham didn't see the ball more than once or twice, I'd get rid as Swansea are going to really struggle against better teams.

The thing is sane didn't look good when he came on for him. Mendy may be back but doubt he will start him anyway. I don't think he played that bad but you have to remember you are comparing his performance to walker really. Who's one of the best wing backs in the country.

Just did the math and according to FPLstatistics.co.uk Hegazi only needs 20,000 more net transfers for his price to rise by 0.1. In merely 10 minutes 500 people transferred him into their team, so that's roughly 3,000 per hour. Considering that most people in the UK are still asleep, and players in America are sleeping too, that 3,000 per hour is only going to go up. So we should be seeing by tonight an increase by 0.1, and because its not even Monday, a 0.2 price rise could very much be on the cards before GW2 even begins. Considering McCauley is due back by GW3 but hasn't played a single pre-season match whilst Hegazi has started every single one but one, it seems like Hegazi seems nailed till at least GW3 but with the potential for a lot more considering McCauley's age. With favorable fixtures too, it seems like the most reasonable big price rise is gonna come from Hegazi.

If you've scored 35 or below this week: all aboard the Hegazi price rise train.

I don't think it's a bandwagon. WBA's defence isn't a bad thing to buy into at all, especially if a 4.5 option emerges.

          Xhaka = bandwagon.

          Heagazi = fairly logical choice.

But when you have a frustrating GW and need some encouragement, price rises are the only way to go IMO. And it's not like WBA have an incredibly difficult schedule either, lots of potential for points and clean sheets over the next 9 GW's.

It is called kneejerking. The gameweek isn't over. What if Pogba scores a hattrick? Hegazi could be a good option, but saving the transfer is still the best option. You picked a team for more than just one game week.

Yes, but a lot of us had a West Brom asset in our drafts so a quick correction is fine I think.

I would completely disagree. The only encouragement that you need at this stage is that not even 1 GW has been played & teams weren't selected based on 1 GW. Avoiding kneejerks and bandwagons is the way forward.

I shipped him on Friday 🙁 Would love to jump on board.
However, I think I'll sit on my hands & take a -4 for 3 transfers after the next match.
There's the potential to save an early WC & that's more valuable than a .2 or .3 rise IMO.
      Tempting though.

For those who missed out on a WBA defender then he seems the logical choice, especially if the budget is tight.

      Thats not how it works

Too many WC active would result in less price changes as their transfers arent considered

If I wasn't already content to keep my defence, I would definitely think about putting Hegazi in. Not just because he scored, but you are spot on with McCauley. I think his days are numbered....

    Hi all,
If I was to wildcard is this the kind of cover I would need, got a big name player for all 6 of the top clubs.
    Foster Gomes
    Cedric Walker Dawson Lowe Ogbonna
    Alli Ramsey Pogba Zaha RLC
    Jesus Firmino Morata

Not sure on Zaha situation could downgrade to JWP and spend 1.5 somewhere else.
I think it looks decent. Tear it apart if u wish 🙂

Anyone notice Stones in the middle of the back 3, usually your best heading player is there (Kompany), I would of thought this solidifies Stones naildness. Also Kompany didnt look comfortable playing on the left side of the back 3, just a thought.

    1. FantasyNik123
      • 10 Years
      6 years, 8 months ago

Might just be there cos Pep doesn't want him to dribble as much. David Luiz has the same going forward dribbling like a madman issue which is why I assume they put Luiz in the middle last season, to prevent him from giving the ball away easily. That was just my first thought when I saw him in that position.

      1. TEKKERS FC
        • 9 Years
        6 years, 8 months ago

Yeah I just thought it was odd, also your LCB/RCB should be your quickest defenders, wouldve thought Stones quicker than Kompany. Alot of faith putting him in the middle Pep must think hes the best passer/decision maker to build the attack.

        1. FantasyNik123
          • 10 Years
          6 years, 8 months ago

As a chelsea fan, seeing the three at the back a lot last season I think the main job of the middle man was to stick in a good tackle and really pressure the center forward of the attacking team. Not much responsibility from an attacking point of view, though, all Luiz had to do was make a quick pass out to Azpi or Cahill. Guardiola could have other plans, though. But City may change to a back 4. Can't really read too much.

            • 9 Years

Hmm interesting Im also Chelsea and I found Luiz had more license to play through balls and push forward so much so Kante had to drop deep sometimes, yeah hard to say at this point, ps not a good start for us!

To be honest, he was very unlucky yesterday. Could've had a brace. I had Aguero(c) but Jesus looked far better.

Same points, with DeGea, Mikhi and Kane(c)
Solid enough start for me, I reckon.....

What do you guys think about taking -4 hits? Worth it or it seldom works out?

Some on here swear by hits, others find them repugnant.

You'll get mixed answers, but I try and not take them unless you've got players like Cahill and Fabregas.

Ok, thank God I didn't have either of them. Changed Fabregas to Willian just before deadline too.

I'll take them for obvious moves, like when King emerged last year. I'm going to wait to see about Sanchez/Hazard/Coutinho and their potential sales and replacements before doing too much.

Worth it early in the season to protect team value IMO. Then only worth it in DGWs and if you have injured players.

Did it a lot last year (averaged nearly 1 hit per GW).

Finished in the top 4K...so it can work. You get a lot of team value built up.

In hindsight though, as many hits were a waste as there were worthwhile ones.

Wow interesting. Makes me confident if I do end up taking a hit this week

Gonna try and reign it in a bit this year (famous last words).

If you are going to take hits, this is the best time.

Jump on those bandwagons, get the price rises, build your team value before xmas.

There's a lot of active players now all doing stuff. Fast forward a couple of months, most casuals have stopped playing, the market forces slow down a lot.

If you go by 1 gw it wont. If you go by 3 to 4 gws it should

Last season I only took them when I was falling down the ranks. Seemed to work.

Depend on moves, even -16 can work if done properly

So, Palace got thrashed at home. Next week it's Liverpool away.

It's probably Zaha or Willian out for me

They'll prefer playing Liverpool. Less of the ball and more counter-attack.

Absolute state of Liverpool's defence. Do not sell now.
