Scout Notes – Gameweek 1 – Sunday

Romelu Lukaku is at the double on his league debut for Man United, while Paul Pogba and Henrikh Mkhitaryan offer able support from midfield. Meanwhile, Harry Kane spurns chances aplenty as Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen steer Spurs to victory at Newcastle.

Lukaku hits the ground running

Perhaps it was a visit from his favourite whipping boys West Ham that ensured a seamless start for Romelu Lukaku at Manchester United.

In a Gameweek where many big-hitters thrived up front, the Belgian didn’t let us down, bullying Slaven Bilic’s side again by scoring twice in a 4-0 rout at Old Trafford.

The most popular player in the game (48%), Lukaku was also the most captained (28%), while over 31,000 opted to play their triple captain on the summer signing.

Although United’s midfield did enough to suggest that they may yet provide us with more budget-friendly options, Lukaku’s immediate impact suggests that, if anything, his 48% ownership looks likely to grow ahead of clashes with Swansea, Leicester and Stoke in the next three.

However, there’s no doubt that the displays of Paul Pogba (goal) and Henrikh Mkhitaryan (two assists, already one more than he managed last season) indicate that United will be a different proposition from the side that scored just 26 times at home in 2016/17.

Indeed, with Nemanja Matic sitting in front of the back-four, Pogba, Mkhitaryan, Juan Mata and Marcus Rashford all registered 27 touches apiece in the final third in the roles behind Lukaku.

While Lukaku will remain the main man for now, Pogba and Mkhitaryan could soon force their way into consideration if Jose Mourinho’s men can build momentum over that kind schedule.

The wing-back system may be Jose’s Plan B

Having utilised a three-at-the-back for a handful of summer friendlies, Mourinho rolled out a 4-1-4-1 set-up against the Hammers.

This was a blow to the 7% owners of Antonio Valencia – impressive as a wing-back over pre-season, he reverted to a right-back berth today.

The most expensive United defensive option at 6.5, we were looking to Valencia as a source of attacking points but he managed just 15 touches in the final third to Daley Blind’s 30 on the opposite flank. Meanwhile, the Dutchman took seven of his side’s 11 corners.

Considering the nature of today’s display, Mourinho will surely be tempted to keep things as they are for Saturday’s trip to Swansea. While a right-back spot doesn’t rule Valencia out of our thoughts, it may force a reassessment of his appeal in the premium defender bracket after the likes of Marcos Alonso and Sead Kolasinac both impressed in the Gameweek.

Frustrated Kane fires a blank

Runner-up in our maiden Captain Poll and second most popular armband pick among FPL managers, Harry Kane left his owners deflated with a one-point return at Newcastle.

Yes, the Spurs frontman’s lack of August Premier League goals continued but this was far from the lacklustre display that saw him fail to register a single effort away to Everton in Gameweek 1 last season.

Six shots – with five inside the box – was top among forwards on both counts. Having struck the woodwork and also had an effort ruled out for offside, Kane could easily have bagged double-figures Fantasy returns on another day.

Granted, there’s no shortage of in-form premium frontmen to consider right now but back-to-back home clashes with Chelsea’s decimated defence and Burnley surely give Kane the chance to immediately atone for today’s blank.

We better get used to the Eriksen vs Alli debate

While Kane fluffed his lines on Tyneside, the Spurs midfield duo wasted no time in picking up the points.

Second only to Kevin De Bruyne for assists last season, Christian Eriksen already has two to his name after teeing up Deli Alli and Ben Davies. The Dane also boasted a considerable threat and fired six attempts on goal – more than any midfielder – on his way to claiming maximum bonus.

Yet Alli reminded us just why he’s the most popular midfielder in FPL by coolly slotting home the opener. Priced at 9.5 apiece, the Spurs midfield big-hitters were also identical for points per match (6.1) last time around – getting in one already seems a wise move.

Given their consistency, non-Kane owners may even consider acquiring both if they have viable options up top as armband alternatives.

Davies rewards early adopters

While his fellow left-back Danny Rose is itching for a way out of White Hart Lane, Davies is making headlines for all the right reasons.

Having scored in Gameweek 38 last season, the Welshman’s strike at St James’ Park means that he has netted in back-to-back league matches, with today’s clean sheet also reminding us of Tottenham’s resilience.

Although young right-back Kyle Walker-Peters offers a cheaper option at 4.5, he’s surely set to give way to Kieran Trippier once the latter gets over his ankle problem.

Coming in at 5.5, Davies is still less expensive than centre-backs Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld, yet only 3% of FPL managers have acquired him. Encouragingly, he also took four of his side’s seven corners.

Davies excelled despite being utilised as a left-back, rather than a wing-back, with the north London outfit lining up in a 4-2-3-1 formation today.

Spurs welcomed back Son Heung-Min back from injury with an appearance off the bench and Mauricio Pochettino may well choose to retain the same system and unleash the South Korean from the off against Chelsea’s defence next weekend. On the other hand, he could turn to 3-4-2-1 if he doesn’t fancy Walker-Peters against the raids of Marcos Alonso down the Blues’ left.

Elliot may just stay on our benches

The Magpies were already without injured right-back DeAndre Yedlin then watched on as another two defenders, Paul Dummett and Florian Lejeune, limped off before the break.

Rafa Benitez will also have to reshuffle his double-pivot after Jonjo Shelvey’s dismissal for a stamp on Alli, with new loan arrival Mikel Merino (5.0) expected to deputise.

Today’s teamsheet at least confirmed that Rob Elliot is the only current active keeper at a cost of 4.0 in FPL. Owned by 17%, he was the second most benched player in the Gameweek, named as a sub by 673,648 FPL managers.

The fixtures may look favourable (hud WHU swa STO bri) but those problems at the back hardly look conducive to clean sheet returns and suggest that Elliot may well have to get used to FPL bench-warming duties.

Interest in Huddersfield’s Steve Mounie could now rise further ahead of next weekend’s home clash with the Magpies after the 6.0-priced striker netted twice away to Palace yesterday.

I want to know too. I have Bertrand and very happy with him so I would recommend him. Next would be a Spurs defender Trippier (and Davies if Rose's situation is clear). Both Saint and Spurs are defensively very solid. CS plus their attacking threat.

Next in mind is Monreal and City CBs. Arsenal DF was solid near the end of last season but not stable yet this term. City CBs are risky IMO. One might be subbed off early to make way for an attacker if they need goals.

Do you think JWP's place is safe? I think he will start again this week as he brings balance to this side but they have quality attacking mids all around.

      I expect something like 150 points from him. 3 goals/9 assists 😛

      Great budget option imo.

That doesn't really add up. Even if he played 60 minutes in every game, received no cards, gets 12 bonus (1 per goal/assist), and Huddersfield somehow keep 10 clean sheets, that's still only 140.

Having chicharito for the hard game and replace before his 4 decent fixtures is just a waste of transfer. He should get atleast 2 more games to prove himself and if he isnt near any goals in those games, then its time to ship him out

How in the hell has Batshauyi dropped by 0.1, but 9 players in Chelsea alone have had more transfers out and stayed the same?!! I was waiting for the CL to get Firmino in, and now I feel robbed!!

              13K out of 73K is 15% out.

Flags make that number needed higher for Fab and Cahill.

The thresholds need to change. Makes sense that Xhaka and Hegazi get rises being the two most transferred players in. But those two dropping defies logic, even for FPL. It ain't right I tell ya!

Players who are hardly owned would never drop if say 50K out was needed.
Players with big ownership would fall faster whereas 10% out is the same for all players.

Whatever the logic behind the system it doesn't accurately reflect the day's transfers, not even close. The system shoud reflect it better. The thresholds should change for lower owned players.

To what? If a player is owned by 15% and one is owned by 1.5%, surely 10 times the sales makes it even?

I don't have the ownership numbers to figure out a system, but when Batshaui drops more than Coutinho and you don't see that kind of discrepancy at the other end of the transfer chart - the rises make sense, not just from the numbers - then I'd say it adversely affects peripheral players compared to bigger ones.

                        Coutinho is red flagged.

                        275K - 20% = 220K
A red flag triples the 10% to make it 30%.

Coutinho has higher ownership than Batshuayi so needs more transfers out. Unlike Batshuayi, Coutinho is also flagged, which means he will need even more transfers out.

At the start of the season you will see drops for peripheral players as managers generally move them out to buy the highest scoring players.

Iwobi wasn't flagged and he didn't drop. Even from an FPL sense I think it's harsh on all Batshaui owners, not just me. Just look at the list of top transfers out. If you didn't have the numbers, would that sound right to you?

At least Batshauyi started. I get that FPL has it's quirks over the real thing, but this seems one that needs ironing out. Like I say, without the very specific numbers no-one could've guessed that end of the price changes, compared to the other which is far more obvious.

There are sites out there that do a decent job of predicting the price changes. With the exception of the flags it doesn't matter what the player does, it's what his ownership does that matters. If a large portion of a player's owners sell him, it's right that he drops in price. It's simple economics and it makes sense to me.

                        Actually can someone explain this:

                        Mounie - 28,000 owners, 45,000 transfers in. 0 rise.

                        Batshuayi - 72,000 owners, 13,000 transfers out. 0.1 drop.

You need 100K in for a rise.
You need 10% owners selling for a drop.

That's also a stupid thing to say. You genuinely believe the two players that most deserved rises are Xhaka and Hegazi and the two players that most deserved drops are Costa and Batshuayi - above all others? No. Sorry, but no. Not having it.

The players that deserved to drop are the players who shed the greatest percentage of their ownership. Among those that weren't injured or red carded, it appears that was Costa and Batshuayi. Therefore, they deserved to drop.

There was no warning anywhere of them dropping. The price drops are in a different league of reason to the price rises.

My team mostly set for next GW except for captain pick and keeper:

    a) who to captain in order of my current thought process: Vardy (BHA - home), Firmino (CRY - home), Lukaku, Kdb..

    b) would you start Forster (WHU - home) or Elliot (HUD - away)

    Tough decisions...Cheers! Powers

Brighton were well organised against City, Vardy will probably get something but maybe a haul looks unlikely.

I would go for Firmino or Vardy, make your choice.

      Forster imo

      b) going by Terriers' attack and Hammers' attack last night, Forster.

Performed well in Gameweek 1. But really don't like the look of the team for Gameweek 2. With the blank at Burnley Alonso with his fixtures looks not a good option at the moment though I should have known that at the start. Anyway is it worth Alonso to Manquilo and 4.5 to Mkhi for -4. I know its a bit knee jerk but its also about the next 4-5 fixtures. I have 1.0 in the bank. Actually that was the reason I had 1.0 in the bank so I could do this exact thing and get a Man U midfielder quickly, but now am thinking twice.

You chose the most expensive defender in the game. You must have had faith. He was just about the most attacking player for Chelsea on Saturday.

I know. I am very double minded. Thanks for your reply. I know I can wait a week. I wouldn't have thought about it if not for Mkhitarian looking like a great long term pick and Alonso is the only one that can be downgraded to get Mkhi. I think I will get Alonso after gameweek 6 probably if I do ship him out now.

    2. tafrère
      • 7 Years

I don't think Alonso is a bad choice because of the fixtures, Chelsea can pretty much keep a clean sheet against any team and Alonso can score against any opponent. I think it's a bad choise because of his price, well too expensive. You have similar picks between 6.0 and 6.5. Even Trippier and Bertrand can compare for 1.0m less imo. It's not like he's gonna win first place among defenders every year. Remember me of Coleman price after his amazing season in 2013/2014 - Baines ended up beating him the following year. But I think it's wiser to wait GW3 and avoid the hit considering both Mkhitaryan and Manquillo play away from home next week.

      1. nisag17
        • 14 Years

Yes, probably Man U won't be as attacking away from home. Thanks for that. I can make the exact transfer next week without taking a hit.

Pretty decent GW to start off (71pts). But I'm still gunna hit the transfers pretty hard at the start of the season. I lost a lot of money last year being slow to make trannies. Can't really see past doing these transfers right now:

    Gabby > Mounie
    Zaha > Miki

    Decent transfers you reckon?
Have to worry about Zaha after that Palace performance I think, as well as him possibly being injured. Miki looking awesome, as were Utd. The Mounie transfer is just to facilitate the Miki one. Should get a price rise and hopefully Mounie can take advantage of his great start and some nice fixtures

    1. nisag17
      • 14 Years
      6 years, 8 months ago

Zaha to Mkhi makes sense. Not sure if that 1.0 can be gathered from somewhere else without looking at the rest of your team. I have Mounie actually but could seriously reconsider the reverse transfer you are making. Gabbi had lots of chances and didn't convert. Mounie had few but conversion was high. Not sure if this will keep up.

      1. FPL Blow-In
        • 11 Years

For value reasons many will back Mounie due to a kind run of fixtures but I don't see Huddersfield scoring many goals.

      Sensible transfers.

Despite the love here Gabbi is rubbish. His conversion rate and accuracy is historically rubbish. If you want Southampton assets the value is in defence.

Not sure about Mounie as yet, but based purely on his last performance and last seasons exploits, he is already 20 times the player Gabbi could ever hope to be.

Hoping for good news (no more than 2 weeks on the sidelines) for Zaha and Dummett.

Jose really surprised me by starting Blind at left back. Now i am left in limbo with Danilo and Darmian both in my team. Anyone who can help me out? Plan was always to swap Trippier back in for Danilo in Gw3 but should I do Darmian to Jones for now? Would Jones be a more secure pick for now?

Gotta get rid of Darmian first IMO. At least Danilo played and could/should play next GW too.

Darmian > Jones sounds like another transfer waiting to happen, but you should get several weeks out of it before you have to worry.

I'll be doing Danilo > Trippier GW3 well

I would go Darmian -> Trippier first - that way at least one of the players will start and you'll avoid the price drop.

Next Week Danilo -> Blind (although there may be some rotation risk), or someone else.

Chelsea's defenders get forward quite a lot, if this happens next game then I expect Kane to score

I expect Conte to park the bus against Spurs.

Luiz and Alonso don't understand the words park the bus

Conte will make them understand it. I don't think Chelsea will risk it with 2 star players already suspended.

I agree I think he would gladly take a point from the Spurs fixture after that fort gw.

i saw the United game but didn't see the City game. How did the latter play?

I have KDB and Jesus but no United attacking presence and am getting twitchy. Cheers.

No. I went for Jesus and Firmino and a strong midfield. Went fine until the last game.

City were very good. Could have scored 6 easy. I thought they looked the best of all the teams this weekend.

        Both Manchester teams looked strong

Spurs looked fine, even with a few out

Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea looked wobbly

Both KDB and Jesus done very well. Hold the knees steady. No Lukaku is very risky though.

Bit sleepy first half but immense in the second. They should have a superb season, but then again so will United. Pretty satisfied I have 6 Mancs in my squad!

Think both teams played well and deserved the win. Will be interesting who scores more and who is more steady for cleanies. tough to predict this.

You can't even change your draft number to check someone else's.

Do you think this will ever get fixed? Totally killing the Draft game not be able to see the points during the gameweek.

Had a pretty good week with 94 pts - Had both Hegazi and Mounie:)

Any thoughts on the following two transfers:

Kane and Willian out - Vardy and Mikhi in for -4?

Shakespeare was appointed on 12 March 2017 and since then Vardy has scored 8 goals in 12 pl games (please correct me if I am wrong). With no Europe this season I really think he is fixture proof and can score against anyone. Any thoughts?

Yes but do you want to get rid of Kane after GW1 ?

Not sure if that is worth it. Kane unbelievably unlucky missing that point blank one at 0-0 and hitting the post at 2-0. Willian was Chelsea's biggest "assisting" threat and really should have ended the day with 2 assists if not for Morata touching a a shot destined for the back of the net

Thanks for the reply. I do agree that Willian was Chelsea's biggest threat. However, their upcoming fixtures are not appealing and I think Conte will really focus on the team defending more as shipping 3 to Burnley, even with 10 men, is disgraceful.

Hi guys, which one is better?

    A. Danilo - KdB - Zaha
    B. Yoshida - Eriksen - Mhikitaryan

For getting B I must take -4 hits in GW3 (hoping the price is stay the same)

    Thx you.
