Captains

Captain Poll – Gameweek 2

The second Captain Poll of the season arrives to canvas your opinion on the key contenders for the Gameweek 2 armband.

A brace on his Premier League debut for Manchester United yesterday means that Romelu Lukaku (11.5) is guaranteed to be among the front runners.

He travels to a Swansea City side that conceded more shots in the box (16) than any side in Gameweek 1. With his ownership reaching the 50% mark over the weekend, he also has weight of numbers on his side as he looks to address the away drought that saw him score just twice in his final 10 road trips for Everton.

The Red Devils’ emphatic 4-0 victory against West Ham also shone the light on two more possible contenders – the 8.3% owned Henrikh Mkhitaryan (8.0), who collected two assists and a pair of bonus points, and Paul Pogba (8.0), who got on the scoresheet and sits in 21.6% of teams.

Liverpool’s 3-3 draw away to Watford highlighted their defensive frailties, but also underlined the wealth of attacking talent among their ranks, with Sadio Mane (9.5), Mohammed Salah (9.0) and Roberto Firmino (8.5) all scoring.

As with last season, the vote for a Reds captain is likely to be split ahead of Crystal Palace’s visit, although with a goal and assist against the Hornets it would be unsurprising if Salah was the most popular of the trio. He is already the most owned player among Jurgen Klopp’s ranks, with a place in 25.7% of FPL teams.

However, with penalty duties added to his repertoire, the 23.1%-owned Firmino could also prosper and even leapfrog his Egyptian team-mate in the latest poll. It is worth noting that Salah may not be favoured by the Fantasy Premier League’s bonus point system, having seen four of his five shots against Watford miss the target.

The only player to register more misses was Southampton’s Manolo Gabbiadini (7.0), who hosts a West Ham side still reeling from yesterday’s heavy defeat. None of the Italian’s five shots were on target against Swansea, which is likely to see his popularity wane despite the favourable fixture. Hauled off after 69 minutes and replaced by Charlie Austin, Gabbiadini will be hoping to retain his role on the teamsheet despite such an ineffectual display.

Shooting accuracy was where Jamie Vardy (8.5) excelled in Leicester’s loss to Arsenal on Friday – he scored from both of his goal attempts. A home tie against Brighton should ensure he prospers in the poll, although he will have to be equally precise as his opponents managed to keep Manchester City down to just six shots in the box in their 2-0 home loss on Saturday evening.

In saying that, it’s worth noting that the Seagulls conceded almost twice the number of goals (26 to 14) on the road than they shipped in front of their own fans last term.

Since Friday, more than 93,000 FPL managers have recruited the Foxes’ talisman.

Sergio Aguero (11.5) proved to be the hero at the Amex Stadium, having broken the deadlock at the 70-minute mark, and he looks to be secure for a start at home to Everton this weekend in Pep Guardiola’s preferred 3-5-2 formation. The 11.8%-owned Argentine could be the leading figure among City’s key captaincy candidates, although eagle-eyed voters would have noticed that the 12.4%-owned Gabriel Jesus (10.5) and Kevin De Bruyne (10.0), who is in 30.4% of teams, fired off four shots apiece on Saturday to ensure they will garner interest.

Involvement in tough-to-call matches, such as Arsenal against Leicester City last Gameweek and Spurs hosting of Chelsea this time around, can weaken players’ chances of securing the armband.

Nevertheless, many could decide to keep the faith with Harry Kane (12.5), who was second in last week’s poll.

Granted, the 35.7%-owned striker failed to find the net in Spurs’ 2-0 away victory over Newcastle United yesterday, but he next takes on a Chelsea side he has scored four times against in eight encounters.

The Blues shipped three goals in their defeat to Burnley, which further strengthens Kane’s captaincy credentials, as does his six shots against the Magpies on Sunday – more than any forward in Gameweek 1.

With a goal at St James’ Park, Kane’s teammate Dele Alli (9.5) may also attract attention, as could Christian Eriksen (9.5), who notched two assists and maximum bonus points in Gameweek 1. The Dane’s 31,000 new owners since Friday will certainly be hoping he can reward their faith.

Chelsea’s capitulation against the Clarets will likely mute interest in their assets, however, the 7.2%-owned Alvaro Morata (10.0) and Willian (7.0), who has an 18.% ownership, may have done enough to secure a decent poll standing. The Spaniard registered a goal and assist off the bench, while Willian also notched assist points.

Among the differential options this week is Christian Benteke (8.0), who scored a brace last time he visited Anfield, in April. However, his side’s 3-0 loss to Huddersfield at the weekend may be too fresh in the mind for those voting this week.

Sticking with the Terriers, their 6.0-priced striker Steve Mounie looks another strong alternative for the armband. He scored twice against Crystal Palace and hosts a Newcastle side racked by injuries and suspension following that bruising home defeat to Spurs. Still in just 2.0% of sides, the former Montpelier marksman has attracted 49,000+ new owners since the weekend.

The poll is now live in the middle column on your homepage on desktop, or via the slide-in menu on mobile and tablet under Recent Comments.

Remember, we’re looking for your vote for the player you think will be most effective, regardless of whether you own them or not.

We will be back to check in on progress in the poll later, ahead of the Gameweek 1 deadline when we deliver our “Captain Sensible” article offering an analysis of the results and the statistics behind the leading contenders.

Some expert advice on this matter?

    A) Zaha & Ritchie ➡ Mkhi & Atsu (-4)

    B) Zaha & Gabbi ➡ Mkhi & Mounie (-4)

    C) Wait for Zaha news but will be priced out of these moves and 7m mid also.

    Appreciate your thoughts!

Just seems crazy to take a -4 to get rid of Jesus already, looked good from what I saw.. Other option is Lacazette out but again for a hit seems mad, he played well and could easily have matched Lukaku's points with a 2nd..

Have a look of your squad, I will hit -4 to ship away Fabregas + Jesus/Laca and get Lukaku + FraserMooy/Atsu/RLC

MU's fixture is too good that Lukaku should be able to keep scoring high, and his price will keep sky-rocketing.

Depends on what you concern more. Price-wise, sell Jesus. Point-wise, sell Laca as his fixture is the least appealing among these three.

By doing so, you also create a good cash ITB to upgrade PVA or Gabi after GW2 if you feel the needs.

    Lukaku for me 110%

It may be early days but i need to take out the £5m waste of Milivojevic. But for whom - based on form it's either Doucoure (Watford) or Fernando

Or is there someone else for £5m or less? (i.e. Dier/Dembele/Atsu)

Advise would be much appreciated! Thanks

Ah ok, yeah I agree playing any of those 3 probably won't pay off. Perhaps stick with Milivojevic, he is on some of their set pieces, and Liverpool have already shown they are dreadful at defending them! Could easily see that game ending up 4-2 to Liverpool or similar haha

Lukaku or Liverpool attacker. Liverpools attacking prowess is not in doubt and Palace were just smashed 3-0 by Huddersfield. Could be a sign of the players not adapting to RDB's new system, and Liverpool could well exploit that clinically.

      Hi TRM,

I think you need both. Liverpool looking more of the fast attacking force that Dortmund were under Klopp, and it was in Klopp's third season with Dortmund when he won the title. If they can defend set-pieces it could be a good year for them. Palace are struggling, the fans want a new keeper and they are adapting to a new system.

Lukaku will score goals in that United team - he's the main man, on pens(?), and they have good fixtures. Swansea didn't concede against Southampton but I've no idea how they managed that!

Hi TopMarx! Good summer? Nice to hear from you again 🙂

My post was a bit ambiguous haha, I was referring to the captaincy question, ie I think captaining Lukaku or a pool attacker is the wisest choice for GW2.

I fortunately do have Lukaku and Salah in my team already, part of a good start that got me 85 points 🙂 How was your GW1? Totally agree with all you say there, I could easily see Liverpool winning that game 4-1 or 5-2 or something! Fortunately we get to see them in action again tomorrow for further assessment. I think Lukaku is on pens, and Man U as a team looked excellent yesterday, I think the days of them struggling to score may be behind them. With those fixtures, Lukaku may be the most essential player to own for the first 6 gameweeks. Yeah I didn't see much of the Southampton match, were they on top? Did Swansea offer much at all?

Well Southampton had 29 goal attempts, more than any other team in GW1, I've only seen highlights but it didn't look good for Swansea.

I think I will keep the armband on Lukaku just because I wouldn't know who to pick out of Firmino, Salah and Mane.

My GW1 was average, not quite the great start I made last season. 67pts. I took out Salah for Willian at the very last minute because I got nervous about Coutinho news affecting the team and Cout not being there to play through balls. I was wrong. I've done Zaha to Salah already, worried about injury news to Zaha https://twitter.com/BenDinnery/status/896842293487030277 and losing TV. A bit kneejerky I know, I'm annoyed I took Salah out. Otherwise I was close to having Hegazi so slightly kicking myself about that although I was lucky Kane only got 1 point - I went with a front line of Lacazette, Jesus and Kaku.

My summer was(is) good! Went to France to see distant relatives, which was lovely. And this will make me sound like a real hippy but I went to the Stonehenge festival for the summer solstice, a friend was born on the 21st and we were celebrating his birthday. It was a good laugh. Hope you've had a good summer too?

Now I'm getting ready to start the HoF articles again, I'm just missing the ID for Matthew Jones out of the top 5.

Well done on your good start to the season!

29?! Good grief, didn't realise it was that high, Southampton will be gutted. Fair point, Lukaku does have the advantage of being the focal point. I'm weighing up whether to persist with Josh King in my team, or bring in Firmino (I have 1.0m itb so can do it for free). Any thoughts on this?

67 is a pretty good solid start to build from, I can understand your frustration though as it was a very high scoring gameweek. Yeah that was the reason I only went with one Liverpool player, the double up looked too risky without Cout playing. Ah I heard about Zaha's potential injury, in any case though, Palace have a fairly poor set of fixtures up until GW9 anyway, so it may not be a bad idea to get rid until they get used to RdB's new system. That front line will see you right through most weeks i'm sure! Jesus looked a huge threat, could have had a hattie on another day. And Lacazette got a settling early goal too, only worry with him would be being moved wide to accomadate Giroud on occasion.

Glad the summer break went well! Haha that must have been interesting, were there a fair few characters at the festival? 😛 Summer's been great thanks, been to Holland for a few days which was lovely, and it was my birthday last week so threw a huge BBQ with a load of mates....and alcohol.

Looking forward to the HoF articles 🙂 Will be really interesting to see who they went with in their opening squads!

Cheers, this is definately the best start I've ever had in terms of points, now just to try and keep it up, it all went wrong over weeks 2-17 last time round!

Belated Happy Birthday! BBQ, mates and alcohol sounds like a perfect way to celebrate 🙂

Yes there were a few interesting characters... different groups of pagan drummers competing with each other and the hoards of young partygoers. I didn't really know what to expect but it had a really good vibe especially for a festival with no official music or bands.

hmm I mean Firmino should do well against an out-of-sorts Palace, but I can see Josh King getting chances against Watford, it might be worth waiting one week - I take it you have Salah?

Although Firmino seems great value, especially with Milner being a rotation risk and Firmino taking pens in his absence (and possibly with him on the pitch too). As a forward he benefits more from BPS to counteract the loss of an extra point per goal. But so many attacking choices this season!

I'm happy with Lacazette for now, in pre-season he did well even when supporting Giroud so that wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing. It was his impressive chance conversion and the fact he should be on pens that attracted me to him. I would like to see him Sanchez and Ozil on the pitch, I think he could prove the best value of the three. I will stick with Jesus too, I also have KdB and no Spurs players. I want them all! Spurs v Chelsea will be a very interesting watch this weekend.

If you see Numb on site, his is the only ID I'm missing to get my HoF article together.

Hope your good start continues, 85pts plus 1.0m itb is a strong position to be in.

                Thank you!

Haha thought there might be! Sounds really good actually, sometimes all you needs is a different setting and a few friends, the simple things can be the best 🙂

Yeah I've got Salah already, just weighing up wherther Palace are so bad (and pool so good) that I want 2 players facing them. I'll be keeping a close eye on Liverpool v Hoffenheim for clues, hopefully Firmino won't rise and price me out of a potential move before then!

Yeah I think thats a great point, a forward 3 of Ozil, Sanchez and Lacazette will surely be in the goals. With Koscielny back they probably won't be so shambolic at the back either! I only have Kolasinic from Arsenal at present, that may well need to change if they continue to show such attacking menace. I'm definately hanging onto Jesus, can't believe he's being sold by so many already! Certainly a case of people just looking at his one point and not what actually happenned in the game.

Yeah I'm definately going to watch Spurs v Chelsea, certainly the most intruiging fixture of the weekend, the first "heavyweight" clash aswell. I think Chelsea could be overrun in midfield though with so many first team regulars out.

Cool, if I see him I'll ask him his ID 🙂

Cheers, I'd describe my current emotions as "tentative relief" haha. Hope GW2 is kinder to you than GW1 was 🙂

Was thinking, Lukaku or Pogba this week. Also had a more eccentric option of going Aaron Mooy, just unsure how risky I want to be this early in the season

I'm thinking Mooy for Fab. Gives me 1.5m to upgrade Gabbi to Firm if GW1 form keeps happening in GW2.

Mooy is the rock at Huddersfield, takes the set pieces and corners and fires some great deliveries in the box, I wouldn't expect many goals from open play though.
Also need to be wary of him playing his internationals for Australia, they have some big clashes for world cup qualifying and long haul flight could have an effect on him

KDB to Eriksen is really tempting, worried KDB's price will fall & Eriksens will rise, also out of the 5 goals (inc FA Cup) that Spurs scored against Chelsea, Eriksen got 4 assists & 1 goal so was involved in them all ...

Any one looked through the leaderboard?
Not only do Mohammeds and Ahmeds make up more than half of the first 50 they ALL seemed to have pressed the BB.
Must be a tactic in Pakistan to get off to a flyer and have your moment in the sun. Theyll regret it later on.

Of course I do. But you can't tell me 50% of the 4m players are called Mo.
Therefore I'm worried why so many people with the same name played the same tactic. Surely more than coincidence.
So I guessed maybe there are FPL chat rooms where the idea spread and by far the highest number of Mo's live in Pakistan.
Just taking a rest from dissecting why my team only scored 50.

Struggling to find a Fabregas replacement. I was keen on Mkhitaryan before the season, but bottled it as I thought a double up on Manchester United was too much.

Is it too knee jerky to take a hit already to bring him in for Fabregas? Would mean either Gabbiadini to Mounie or Gross to RLC (as a fourth midfielder).

Bring in Ramsey. He's going to be a big player for us this season

Not knee jerky at all, Mkhi looked the real deal and Mounie looks like a real goal scorer with good fixtures.

You have a few options here. You could do just Fab to Willian, or fab to Ramsey. Those would be my favoured options. Miki or Pogba are both looking good, Utd look to be over their scoring problems, so I think Gab to Mounie to fund that might work, but you would need them to score to make it worthwhile. Third option is just play a bench player if you have any decent options with a nice fixture.

    @Mark

We really need the goals and assists etc history to show the total in player info. Still not there. Secondary would be good to bring back the forum section.

Messily 44 points this gw so must do something before it gets worse (no United )

    Which move looks most appealing?

    A) Jesus to Lukaku and Gabbi to Mounie

    B) KDB to Jwp and Gabbi to Lukaku (top heavy with Kane, Kaku, Jesus attack)
