Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Champions League Tuesday

A Trent Alexander-Arnold free-kick grabs the attention, but it is keeper Simon Mignolet who deserves the plaudits as Liverpool win 2-1 at Hoffenheim in their Champions League play-off match.

And a pre-season match after the start of the league campaign? Man City travel to Spain for just that.

Rotation? What rotation?

Jurgen Klopp named an unchanged side, and even the same bench, for the trip to Hoffenheim, which suggests that rotation might be a factor for Saturday’s visit of Crystal Palace.

It also highlights the slenderness of a Liverpool squad that is now well placed to be involved in plenty more high-level midweek European matches before Christmas.

That could have ramifications in both the short and long term.

The front three of Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Mo Salah were prominent in Germany, but they will struggle to maintain their brand of pacey, high-pressing intensity if required to play twice a week for the foreseeable future.

A late Hoffenheim goal kept the tie alive, making it very difficult for Klopp to consider resting players in the second leg – even with a visit from Arsenal coming just four days later.

The attacking trio are far and away the most popular Liverpool players in Fantasy Premier League, with all enjoying more than 20% ownership. Something will likely have to give at some point, be it form or fatigue.

Neither scenario is attractive for their FPL owners.

Two full-backs, one star

A pair of 4.5-priced full-backs, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Alberto Moreno, took to the field against the Germans, and the former had a night to remember.

The young right-back continues to deputise for the injured Nathaniel Clyne. He’s also growing in stature as a set-piece taker and opened the scoring with a fine free-kick.

There’s a lot to love about a full-back with so much potential for goals and assists – particularly at that price – but the chance of clean sheet points is another matter entirely.

Liverpool’s defence managed 12 shut-outs last season. On the evidence of the first two matches of this campaign, they’ll struggle to surpass that modest sum.

Having conceded three goals at Watford, they could easily have done the same in Germany, relying on the profligacy of their hosts and a superb display from goalkeeper Simon Mignolet, who saved a penalty amid a range of excellent stops.

Moreno continues to look the weakest link in a porous backline and even the sainted Alexander-Arnold was at fault for Hoffenheim’s goal, appealing for an offside instead of getting on with the rather more pressing matter of stopping Mark Uth from getting in on goal unopposed.

The youngster, currently owned by just 2.7% in FPL and also boasting a share of corners, has very tempting attacking credentials at such a knock-down price, but Liverpool are some way short of impressive as a defensive unit.

Milner still out of position

One player Klopp could have used to shore up the Reds’ leaky left flank was James Milner.

Having impressed as a left-back while classified as a midfielder in FPL last season, the former England international ironically now seems destined for a midfield role now he’s down as a defender this year.

That could be an advantage to us – if he gets the pitch-time.

Milner only came on for the last half an hour in Germany as a straight swap in midfield for Jordan Henderson. On Saturday, against Watford, he played the last five minutes in place of Salah.

Klopp himself has stated that Milner is like having a new signing in midfield, which is just as well when Adam Lallana is injured and Philippe Coutinho determined to leave.

With specialist left-backs Moreno and new man Andrew Robertson – who is yet to even make the matchday squad for the Reds – at his disposal, the manager has so far been true to his word regarding the veteran.

Should Milner also snatch back penalty-taking duties, he could be a steal, even at 6.5, for an out of position defender.

But for now, that seems unrealistic. He’s currently an expensive bit-part player, albeit one who provided an assist for Liverpool’s second goal in Germany.

Firmino on form, not fire

A generous 8.5 FPL price has prompted 23.7% of managers to go with Firmino up front, and he provided an immediate reward with a penalty against Watford last weekend.

In Germany, he showed his creative talents, dropping deep to play Mane and Salah into the space that he created.

But as a striker, he was limited to just the one big chance on the night, while his attacking team-mates were given, and squandered, rather more goalscoring opportunities.

The Brazilian supplied two goals (one from the spot) and three assists in pre-season and his role is more facilitator than finisher.

His price remains attractive, but 8.5 is still a lot of money for a man who could end up with more assists than goals this season, particularly if Milner does start looming again as a spot-kick alternative.

City get a random run-out

The first Tuesday after the start of a long and gruelling new campaign is the perfect time to be travelling to Spain for a friendly – if you’re Pep Guardiola.

Man City’s entire first-team squad – minus Kyle Walker for personal reasons – boarded the plane for Girona and many got a run-out in what the club span as ‘an intensive training camp’.

Four City players – Douglas Luiz, Aleix Garcia, Pablo Maffeo and Marlos Moreno – are on loan at La Liga side Girona, which also happens to be owned by Guardiola’s brother, Pere, and City are reportedly considering making an investment in the Spanish club.

Add all that up and an interestingly timed post-pre-season pre-season friendly was the result.

Guardiola again went with a three-man defence that included Tosin Adarabioyo, John Stones and Eliaquim Mangala – with Danilo and Leroy Sane taking up the wing-back roles.

Meanwhile, new signing Bernardo Silva also started and fellow midfielder Ilkay Gundogan was given a 20-minute run-out as he returned from a knee injury that has kept him out for eight months.

The match also provided both Yaya Toure and Raheem Sterling – the latter playing up front – with some extra pitch-time. Gabriel Jesus was brought on for the last 20 minutes.

New arrival Benjamin Mendy was included in the squad as he steps up his recovery from a thigh complaint but the former Monaco left-back was not even named on the bench, suggesting that he will be eased into contention by his manager.

City lost 1-0, in case you were wondering.

I was on B but not sure about gametime, if nailed then best. What do you think of Ward Prowse or Tadic, lovely fixtures and I think they were unlucky first match...

True but I remember him disappointing at Norwich as well. He's still very young of course. I'm not slating him in footballing terms, just FPL.

Yes, I brought in Zanka, Mkhitaryan, Willian and Mounie. Team value is now 100.3. One of the reasons I had such a poor year last season was because my team value was below 100. I took too long to bring players in and take out those whose value went down.

    - On team news for Stoke

Mertesacker will be available again. For Sanchez it looks a bit early again, he works hard in training. I think Saturday comes too soon but he should be available for Liverpool.

    - On Alexis’ recovery

His recovery is going very well. He is working very hard. We have to be cautious. It’s a muscle strain and we don’t want to have any set back on that.

    - On Mustafi and Coquelin

They will be in the squad.

    - On Jack Wilshere

For him it’s good that he is back and available. I think he needs game now. He might play again now on Monday night. What is important for him is a natural progression to be really fit. He is not far away now.

I expect him to start against Stoke. He obviously wasn't 100% ready last week and was listed as doubtful, we all knew that so I don't know why people think Elneny is suddenly ahead of him. Ramsey always started games when he was fit, Wenger loves and trusts him. Xhaka and Ramsey is currently preferred pair by Wenger and most of fans.

        Monreal will play this weak...

But longterm it's hard to say. Kosc and mustafi picks them selfs, and kolansic is first choise wingback. That leaves one CB-spot left. Which is for Monreal or Holding to battle on.
Monreal have been very good and consistent on CB, Holding have got very much stick for his last performance, but wenger are known to have faith in the young ones. So it's very hard to say.

But personaly, i think Monreal is nailed until Kosc and Mustafi are available, that's when it gets 50/50.

Ox far from nailed, chances is he'll start on the bench now on Saturday, and that chance gets higher for every gameweek from there as long as the rest stays fit.
But has I said about Holding above, eventhough Ox might not seem the obvious starter by fans/bystanders, it's a player that Wenger will give playing time. But not to the extent of him being an asset for FPL

It's a close call. I ditched Danillo for Lowe to free up the funds for Zaha > Mkhitaryan. Great during pre-season and the tail end of last season - not just on Sunday. Pretty nailed IMO until CL or a big game where Herrera may be preferred (first of which is GW8). I also understand why people would prefer not to take the hit. Personal preference.

I have enough in my squad to have a decent XI and bench A and B in the meantime. Inclined towards Milner as I don't want one of my rivals owning Trippier later on.

Ben Davies isn't nailed on and if Rose stays won't play much all season.

Tripper will be nailed over the season.

Milner isn't nailed on so I'd lose him if you can but not for Davies.

Draft is a long run and Davies not in team for long run, just once in a while, but good punt in "normal" fantasy when he plays.

Agreed but is Milner good for the long run? It's a small draft of just 4 teams so lots of scope for short term waivers.

Can Huddersfield be trusted to score goals? A promoted team with minus goal difference.

Seeing a lot of Mooy/Gross Zaha replacements, just not sure i can trust them even with those fixtures...

If Ramsey was guaranteed to play then he would be the obvious choice but as there is so much uncertainty im quite tempted to bank the transfer and play Tom Carroll.

They don't have tough fixtures in fact they have 3 home games in the next 4. They scored 3 goals against Palace.
They could come good in the short term specially Mounie imo.

Its just a bit annoying that the assist points were spread throughout the team, if there was one key asset then sure but im just not sold on them going forward unless its Mounie.

As a replacement for Zaha its between Ramsey who should be nailed, or punt on Mooy and free up some cash.

They've bought a striker with an excellent season behind him. His 2 goals at the weekend certainly suggest that they've bought well. They've got a number of attacking options who've all got goals in their game.

Also, goal difference isn't a useful indicator in fantasy football. Attackers and defenders score points independently of each other. If you've got players banging in the goals, it makes little difference if the defenders behind them are useless.

      1. Red Rock
        • 6 Years

Mounie does look superb, and i'm hoping he can maybe be the Austin of this promoted trio of teams.

Im just stating that a team with minus goal difference indicates that defensively and attacking wise they struggled, and within the Championship it doesnt fill me with confidence when the PL is a big step up.

321.75 with the following squad (earned me 94 pts in GW1):

      Begovic Foster
      Bertrand Daniels Jones Mee vanAanholt
Salah David Silva Ward-Prowse Mkhitaryan Zaha
      Firmino Lukaku Gabbiadini

Had planned to stick both Palace players on the bench for next week and save my FT, but loathe to lose the TV with Zaha dropping like a stone. Also would like to shift Gabbs but think it's worth giving him another GW to see if he makes a case for staying put.

Considering Zaha > RLC, Carroll or Atsu to free up transfer funds for future GWs in case someone else hits form which would allow me to drop either Gabbs or JWP if they are still under performing.

      Thoughts?

No. Salah is truly excellent. I liked him from the flashes of brilliance I saw in his Chelsea days and him and Lukaku were the only players I never thought about removing from my team. Already have Lowe so don't wanna double on Hud with Mooy. Is Fraser a better option (called Bournemouth's Hazard) who perfectly rotates with Carrol? It will be again double up with Daniels but with the rotation seems like easier to swallow.

    Zaha to:
    A) Ramsey
    B) Redmond/Tadic
    C) Ward-Prowse
    D) Atsu

C or D would fund Mkhitaryan this/next week

I would consider only B if I was in your place

Fair enough, which one would you go for though?

Was dead set on Zaha > Ramsey to avoid the price drop but think I'll take a punt on Wijnaldum for a few weeks. Only ever scored at home, has three home matches in the next four. Two are against Palace and Burnley. Arsenal are the third and leaky, plus Liverpool tend to perform against better sides. Already have Ritchie and Mounie so no one really appeals in the lower price brackets. Thoughts?

Played 90 last night and can see Pool being a little fatigued this weekend.

Honestly think I'm benching Zaha this GW, taking the drop on the chin and having more info to go on for a -4 next GW.
