Digest

The Digest – Gameweek 1

We bring the curtain down on Gameweek 1 with the weekly digest.

Manchester United’s new frontman makes his presence felt at Old Trafford. Huddersfield Town’s performance changes our perspective on their potential, while we analyse the Harry Kane exodus, as the transfer market is quick to escalate.

The Player

Any concerns over how quickly Romelu Lukaku would settle at Manchester United were swiftly dispelled after a weekend double at home to West Ham.

Entering Gameweek 1 as the top owned and most captained player in Fantasy Premier League, the Belgian justified that collective show of faith with a 13-point haul in his first league appearance for the Red Devils.

Now owned by over 51% of managers, he’s garnered more than 115,000 transfers-in since Friday’s deadline.

The fixtures certainly offer the chance to maintain momentum – with Swansea, Leicester and Stoke up next – his armband appeal is obvious.

The competition for places in our three-man frontlines could barely be stronger after a host of premium picks delivered. Yet Lukaku’s immediate impact in Jose Mourinho’s new-look attack ensures he remains a prominent figure in our thinking for now.

As witnessed on Sunday, there is also the hope that the new boy’s pace as the focal point could unlock United’s under-performing midfielders as Fantasy options.

At home, in particular, they were dire last season – Mourinho’s men scored a mere 26 times at Old Trafford, netting more than twice in just two of 19 fixtures.

If Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Paul Pogba can build on promising weekend displays, our attentions may not be solely focused on Lukaku.

The Team

As the first side to gain promotion to the Premier League with a negative goal difference, few had considered Huddersfield Town for their initial squads.

Handed a season opener away to Palace, the general assumption was that Wilfried Zaha and Christian Benteke would run riot against a defence that managed just six clean sheets in 23 away outings in last season’s Championship.

Yet David Wagner’s side wasted no time in proving the doubters wrong.

Indeed, their 3-0 win at Selhurst Park suggests that the Terriers’ high-pressing style of play could prove more efficient in the top flight, where far fewer opponents operate with route one tactics.

What’s encouraging is that they stuck to their tried and trusted approach despite installing target man Steve Mounie up front.

The new boy is a monster in the air – he averaged 8.4 successful aerial duels on his way to netting 14 times for Montpellier last season – but his new team-mates didn’t resort to launching aimless long balls and deep crosses. Indeed, only Brighton and Swansea (eight apiece) produced fewer crosses than the Terriers’ 14 in Gameweek 1.

The early-season optimism is emboldened by a run of favourable fixtures – along with Man United, Huddersfield are the only side to avoid all of last season’s top six in the first six Gameweeks.

Having scored twice against the Eagles, Mounie (6.0) is clearly the main bandwagon, claiming over 78,000 new owners thanks to a 12-point return.

But three home fixtures in the next four (NEW SOU whu LEI) look promising at both ends of the pitch, with centre-half Zanka and set-piece taker Aaron Mooy also subject to investment in light of a goal and assist respectively.

And the search for value picks could soon see more of Wagner’s regulars make their way onto our radars. Raiding left-back Chris Lowe mirrors Zanka’s 4.5 price point, while new boy Tom Ince equalled Mounie’s pre-season tally of four goals.

The Talking Point

One match into the season and Harry Kane – the winner of back-to-back Golden Boots – has already been given the elbow by over 91,000 FPL managers after failing to score against Newcastle United.

The fact that Kane produced more shots and more efforts inside the box than any other striker in the opening round of fixtures seems to have been dismissed.

Similarly, he’s now poised to face Chelsea’s decimated defence and then Burnley in back-to-back home matches.

It says everything about the current market activity that proven Fantasy royalty like Kane can be so quickly cast aside.

He may be last season’s top scoring forward and number one for points per match (7.5) in 2016/17, but that record fails to protect him.

Judging by the current trends, the form of premium priced forwards could make the market particularly volatile this season.

Eleven strikers were priced at 8.5 or over at the start of this season’s FPL. Of the ten who took to the pitch in Gameweek 1, only three failed to find the net – Kane, Gabriel Jesus and Michy Batshuayi.

Jesus, who was second only to Kane for points per match up front last season, has been sold by nearly 50,000. Meanwhile, Batshuayi has already fallen in cost to 8.4.

Perhaps Kane’s poor scoring record in August, or the fact that Spurs have to play their home matches at Wembley, are the bigger factors at play here.

So often in Fantasy football, patience is a commodity that can pay off for those who avoid knee jerking.

But with such a luxury of forward options at our disposal this season, there’s a high chance that we will have to ride out and absorb price drops in order to stick to our guns.

A blank against Chelsea, with further returns for Lukaku at Swansea, would cause significant tremours.

Kane’s appeal centre’s around his infallibility as a captain candidate. Should Lukaku begin to show the potential to match him home and – more crucially – away, then the Spurs striker will suffer another blow and, for some, he may not be given the Burnley fixture to address the balance.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Fabregas to Mkhi makes sense, because Fabregas won't play. But the other player you would've removed as part of the switch is unjustified, unless it's also a player who won't play next week.

It's mad really isn't it. I can totally see a scenario where Mata, Kane, Jesus, Milner, Son, KdB etc score and all the favourite scorers from GW1 blank. One GW is not enough to gather useful data.

I don't question swapping Zaha or Fabregas out for him. Swapping out a player that won't play for a player who will is a no-brainer.

But the other player they're getting rid of as part of the deal is the problem. Gabbiadini, for example. You spend a whole month before the season and for whatever reason you decide to go with him as per your desire, and you sell him after just one week. What will they do if Mounie blanks and Gabbiadini scores now, reverse it back again?

Or he goes on a great run, his price keeps rising and he ends up a season keeper and we have got him cheaper than others have. With Zaha injured I had a choice of a player I didn't want (nothing 7m and under interested me) and a probable further transfer down the line or take the hit up front for a player who is likely to be a bargain if nailed. 37 weeks for this -4 to pay off...

Thought the different strategies between Mark and Jonty for Zaha were interesting last night.

I didn't get a chance to comment on it but Mark is adopting a similar style to last year - so many big hitters, a potentially aggressive transfer market and in turn aggressive transfers to take the hit and take it early to bring in Mkhitaryan

Jonty is taking a more passive approach and getting in someone with good fixtures that also frees up cash and gives another week to gain more knowledge.

Which way will come out on top this season?

          My thinking is I could:

1.) swap like-for-like, Willian or someone. Nobody really appeals though
2.) Take a hit, downgrade and get Mkhi. Not sure about taking hits now though
3.) Play RLC, gather another GW's worth of data and think about who might be worth downgrading/upgrading to.

So I'm inclined towards 3.) considering the fact that Liverpool can't defend and no Zaha=more minutes for RLC.

I would have rolled it and played Dann for his set-piece threat vs Liverpool but Mkhitaryan's bandwagon was one I didn't want to let go.

I know that if a player has gone up by 0.2 or more, I start to ignore his obvious appeal and argue against it, because I hate paying more than the early adopters - they get his points and pay less. That often means I start getting foolishly stubborn.

So my policy is warped by my own awareness of my mentality when it comes to these early bandwagons.

I don't believe that Jonty is worried by that so much. He'll often just sign the right player and not care that others have paid less and also have their points. That kind of thing bugs me.

I'm surprised you are turned off players when they hit 0.2 more than their starting price, Mark. I'll price a player based on their returns and if they're an 8.0 delivering like an 9.5, I have no problem buying them at 8.5.

Sure, I usually act quickly of I see a player I want because I don't like paying more than I need to, but that's not the same thing as arguing against a player because they're 0.2 above their start price.

Mark is adapting to the new dynamics of the game whereas with Jonty you could say he is 'stuck in his old ways'.

I feel a passive/patient approach is a becoming less and less effective as the games gets bigger, prices become more volatile and more players having more knowledge. My money is on Mark and his HOF rank speaks for itself.

My experience last year showed that the old ways still have some legs though.

I actually suffered my slide down the rankings over autumn by adopting the exact same aggressive approach - jumping quick on bandwagons - taking hits to do so.

Trouble is with those moves there are risks and with so many good expensive players last year if you get the wrong ones - ie Sanchez and Hazard ahead of a drought - then it goes wrong.

From January I went back to my old way - which was simply to get in good players - but not become a slave to the price rises.

hey presto - I reversed that 1m ranking slide.

I do agree that getting in good players with good fixtures is important - but I don;t think that's a new strategy.

I think Mark is right to make his move as he overspent on Valencia - who can be replaced with a player who is 1.5 cheaper in Jones.

The big question for me - and one I need a little more time for - is have I overspent on KDB and Kane...can one or both be replaced and if so who for.

Eriksen is the one I have my eye on. Jesus too. But I'd like to give young Gabbiadini one more week and in Mooy I have the perfect player to give me time - offers strong value potential. 1.5 itb.

The following week I may well be aggressive and look to draft in some of the previous week's high performers or not.

If Mkhi carries on doing well - great - I'll get him in. I'd like to see how well they do away first...and against a team with an acutal defence.

Drop Kane To Firmino and get Eriksen and Alli in the midfield

I suppose Kane can only be replaced (with one player) by Lukaku. As both would be the obvious captaincy choices capable of scoring big.

      Yeah, it's interesting.

For me, I'm anticipating that Mkhitaryan might just deliver something at Swansea and then start to sky rocket. I don't want to miss one rise and be forced into a panicked hit on Saturday. I'd rather have done that now, having given it some thought.

Jonty could be wise to wait for more information and I do think Mooy is an excellent signing, but for me I want to stay on top of players who I think are capable of maintaining momentum in the market - Mkhitaryan fits that profile currently.

Like I said last night, I'm aware he's not nailed on when CL kicks in, but I'm not prepared to risk letting him get away from me. We know how quick the market is at this point - particularly when it comes to United assets.

It's a perfect example of the different ways that the game can be played. Also interesting that they got the same number of points GW1 with 2 completely different teams.

      FYI, I'm on team Mark.

I did Zaha + Willian -> Mhiky + Ritchie and Im really happy with it. Mhiky fantastic form and fixtures. His price will provably be around 8.3m next week. Zaha probably 6.7-6.8. Willian's fixtures are tough now and Chelsea will miss some key players. Hazard also back in training so fear for his playing time. The reason behind Ritchie is because he's on pens and set pieces and Newcastle's fixtures are really good.

      Jonty, for this week.

I'm all for being aggressive, we all were last season. But one GW doesn't say anything. Swapping Zaha or Fabregas out for Mkhi is a no-brainer because they won't play next week and Mkhi probably will. However, if you're removing another player as part of the deal that's going to play next week, it's unjustified.

Gabbiadini, for example. You spend a whole month before the season and for whatever reason you decide to go with him as per your desire, and you sell him after just one week. What will they do if Mounie blanks and Gabbiadini scores now, reverse it back again?

I can see Jonty wanting to wait and put money in bank but still seems going with Mooy, Ritchie and T carroll doesn't seem to leave much flexibility in upgrading mids later. Almost putting himself in a situation that he's going to have to sell KDB or Kane to finance upgrades. Also have to wonder whether he's forcing himself into a 4-3-3 set up.
Mark's approach seems more aggressive. I'd like to the same but would have to release the money from DDG.
Think I'm going to wait for Zaha confirmation and play Bavies at home to Chelsea.

I have sort of thought of this - which is why I am happy to go 4-3-3 the following week as I have Suttner...but also happy to field cheap mids if they have good fixtures.

No way would I be getting Mooy ahead of a tough run.

For the moment most transfers I make will be looking for value, generating money in the bank and then using it to improve.

I'm still of the opinion that Pogba could be just as good, if not better.

I too have Zaha and no money and don't love Ramsey/Willian as like for likes.

JWP-RLC + Zaha-Pogba is in consideration for sure. Another return from Pog and the wagon would be just as big, if not bigger and faster given his household name.

        Something similar.
Just not sure I want to bring in RLC with Palace's fixtures - forces me into starting T Carroll or going 4-3-3.
And just want to give JWP a chance considering Saints' fixtures.

Exactly my thoughts on Rom. But there's no way to get him in without sacrificing points which seems a bit rash this early on. Plus it would mean bombing out Kane, and, despite not scoring, he had two clear cut opportunities against Newcastle. On another day he bags an easy brace.

Good point on the keepers, although I expect Newcastle to keep a clean sheet at Huddersfield.

He didn't start the last match because he had been injured and only just returned - he's first choice when fit.

His stats in his 23 minute cameo are better than anyone else in that price range, who played 90 mins.

Liverpool just conceded 3 goals to Watford - they can score goals for sure, but they can also concede them.

Maybe, but if he doesn't outscore Lukaku for 1m more then he isn't worth the extra at this stage. No use having two big hitters if you're only captaining one: they are poor value.
