Selection

The Watchlist Updated – Zaha Topples Out

Our Watchlist player rankings – listing would-be mid-term targets – were revised earlier this week following Gameweek 1.

These can be found in your sidebar on desktop, or via your slide-in menu on mobile or tablet.

They effectively collate our current thinking on player selection for each position, listing the factors that are contributing to the given rank.

When viewing, it’s important to bear in mind the “rules” at play, particularly when it comes to “coverage”. While Harry Kane sits high in the forward rankings, this can dent the appeal of both Christian Eriksen and Dele Alli as midfield options. Similarly, if a goalkeeper looks to be the go-to method of covering a defence, this will be reflected in the ranking assigned to their defenders.

As a rule, we try to force ourselves to commit to one player per position per club. However, in some circumstances – when we consider it viable, and maybe even advisable, to double up – two players will be listed.

Right now, with just a single Gameweek to consider, form has not played a major role in the rankings. This will kick in once we have three to four Gameweeks to analyse. However, in some cases – should a striker score a hat-trick for example – we will start reflecting this in the factors shown.

In general, there have been few seismic changes following the opening weekend.

In goal, we’ve promoted West Brom’s Ben Foster to the summit in light of Newcastle United’s defensive injuries that limit Rob Elliot’s budget potential.

Huddersfield Town’s Jonas Lossl is the biggest climber on show after his impressive haul in the shut-out of Crystal Palace.

West Ham’s Joe Hart also experiences a slight climb, despite the Hammers’ Old Trafford drubbing. Their fixtures improve radically very soon, with their prospects gradually improving as each of the first three away matches are ticked off. Hart, at just 4.5, is currently the cheapest secure route into Slaven Bilic’s backline.

In defence, we have chosen to topple Manchester United’s Antonio Valencia, with Phil Jones currently offering strong value at just 5.0.

Victor Lindelof is clearly set to be eased into action by Jose Mourinho, so Jones looks destined for a run in the United rearguard – while he remains fit, of course.

He ranks high, though Southampton’s Ryan Bertrand – with his ridiculously favourable early schedule – is elevated to top spot.

Lower down, Arsenal’s Sead Kolasinac is a climber following his impressive Gameweek 1 debut, while John Stones is our current candidate in Man City’s defence – at least while we can assess how Pep Guardiola intends to rotate at wing-back.

In midfield, we’ve elected to keep faith with Kevin De Bruyne for now, although he is under real threat from the buoyant Mo Salah, along with the Spurs pair Eriksen and Alli, who both recorded returns in Gameweek 1.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan is a climber and gets the nod over Paul Pogba as our weapon of choice in the Man United midfield. The option to double on Jose Mourinho’s attack looks far more favourable following Sunday’s impressive dismantling of West Ham.

Mkhitaryan’s lot is improved by the injury to Wilfried Zaha, with the Crystal Palace winger reportedly set to be sidelined for up to four weeks. We await confirmation from Palace, although as it stands, Zaha’s transfer traffic is only heading one way.

A dearth of obvious replacements – with Willian likely to come under threat from a fit-again Eden Hazard – also boosts Mkhitaryan’s prospects.

Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsey is another 7.0 option who is yet to establish steady stock. Benched against Leicester City, the Welshman is not assured of his start at Stoke City in Gameweek 2.

Gylfi Sigurdsson makes his first appearance in our thinking following confirmation of his move to Everton. He enters low thanks to the Toffees’ abhorrent set of fixtures over the next four Gameweeks. However, clearly, the Icelander is set to rise up our rankings as those next four encounters are ticked off.

In attack, Romelu Lukaku’s explosive Premier League debut for United saw him leapfrog Harry Kane at the top.

The Spurs striker needs to find a response against Chelsea in Gameweek 2 to hold off the claims of Manchester City’s Gabriel Jesus; the Brazilian is preferred to the Sergio Aguero option, despite his blank at the Amex Stadium.

Under this, there are climbs for Roberto Firmino, Jamie Vardy and Alexandre Lacazette after impressive Gameweek 1 performances.

However, they seem likely to struggle to break into the top three, unless Kane and Jesus continue to falter.

Huddersfield Town’s Steve Mounie is promoted as our budget option of choice, though Burnley’s Sam Vokes also climbs having matched his opening day brace.

The likes of Javier Hernandez, Jay Rodriguez and Jermain Defoe are yet to fire, but will have their opportunity to climb in our reckoning following Gameweek 2.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I have Kane, Luka and Firmino and will give it to Kane I think. Against Chelsea, first home game of the year and had a lot of chances last match. He will get a goal or two. Think Firmino is a good shout too.
      Would not go Laca.

Out of curiosity, how do you feel about your club not letting him go easily, postponing transfer letter etc...
I understand it's a new situation that a player actually wants out of barcelona (instead of being pushed out), but the club did look like a sore looser on this one.

In the current market,it is easier to retain your best players than to pay mindboggling prices for your targets, and Neymar being one of the top players in the world ,it is only natural for the club to do what they think is the best. This is not the first time and it won't be the last.

      Why I see the opposite:

Not everybody here factor in the chance that Liverpool rotated after and before CL game? Personally I avoid Liv players due to this

Many considers Chelsea fixture very terrible at the beginning, so not owning Alonso. Template team has Willian only becoz he is cheap

Many also reckon the Wembley effect of Spurs, so avoid their assets. Template has Kane coz of fear factor and captaining potential from GW3 onwards.

I guess many people realize MU fixture and have two to three players in their team, so they will gain by having them.

SOT could easily lose 0:1 against an attacking-good West Ham side, so it won't be a disaster at all if it's within your expectation.

Vardy is probably the only template destroyer

i didnt. I have Dawson, PVA, Yoshida, Alonso and Mee. I planned on playing Dawson, Yoshida and Alonso every week and to rotate Mee and PVA for their home games. My only concern now is that PVA is playing a terrible Liverpool defence. Carroll will be playing a more advanced roll now that Siggy has gone and there is a good chance he'll be taking free kicks

template? I don't follow "template team" much myself. If there is a combination of players that can beat the template team by the same budget, then we should go for it without fear. I think my pretty good fantasy performance are for good reason.

You may see the upside of Iheanacho, but I see a lot of downs at THIS moment:
          - he is not nailed NOW
          - he is new to the team and you don't know how fast he will integrate. Based on his performance last match, he just did nothing.
          - Vardy is still the main striker
          - his goal / min is exceptional, but he rarely start a PL match, so his record is unproven
          - his teammates are Drinkwater and Ndidi now, not David Silva and KDB anymore

You still feel he is good? For me, I won't even buy him at $5.5 at this stage.

nothing else you need to do now, but my next plan will be moving away PVA. No CS is very killing to a $5.5 defender no matter how good he is going forward or deadball duties

Personally, I will play RLC ahead of PVA at GW2

      1. Up the tics

I was thinking the same, I was going to downgrade PVA and upgrade my 4th mid for more flexibility so I can start playing 3-4-3, I think that formation would be more profitable

Probably. But just don't let formation as a limiter of your squad. This game change drastically and you will swap among formations a lot going forward.

An example is Chelsea's fixture. Once it turns, you will jump on Alonso and give up the $7 mid you're acquiring now

I went Redmond for Zaha as he seems the most nailed of the front 4 and stats wise is even with Tadic. Won the eye test too. Little worried about the impact of Lemina, and maybe Austin gets some minutes soon with Gabbi blanking. The whole team was extremely wasteful in GW1.

Get both. Wildcard makes the changes permanently. Free hit gives you unlimited transfers for a week but then your team reverts back after that 1 week.

    2. Taking the Mkhitaryan

You have two wildcards a season that you can make unlimited transfers that week

Free hit is temporary. So you can play the chip and change all your players, but the next gameweek your team goes back to what it was before you played the chip

You get both (but not in the same gameweek). Wildcard allows you to make lots of permanent changes to your team for free. Free Hit allows you to parachute in a team for free for one week only, then you get your old team back. I think it is rubbish.

That "one week team" I built up over several weeks allowed me to make up about 50 points on the masses last season. That's a huge differential strategy that's been neutralized this year. Welcome to more cookie cutter teams...

Yeah, I think it rewards the "lazy non-casual" players. To be brutally honest that was me last season so I'd have been happy with it, intending to be a lot more focused this year though so I sympathise with your viewpoint.

The real "casuals" will probably blow it way before that point or will have stopped playing but the majority of the top 10k/50k/100k? will look to play it in the same way I imagine.

Who knows though, I get plenty wrong.

Some sort of big (but brief) fixture swing? GW38? I'd be intrigued by what you might come up with - always good to see differential planning/strategy get rewarded.

Personally I lack imagination so will be using it 'conventionally' unless circumstances make it potentially more useful elsewhere, means I have to have secured a decent rank by that stage because I won't make a lot of ground on the masses with it!

Very nice! I'm massive (autocorrect keeps trying to say 'naive'which may be more appropriate) in defence so:
          DDG
          Alonso Bert Kola Daniels Stones
          KDB Salah Zaha (boo)
          Jesus Kaku(c)

Zaha is the problem child but I think I'll stick, take the drop and get more flexibility next week with 2 transfers.

    A. Firmino + Alli
    B. Willian + Kane

Currently on B, but leaning heavily towards A and want to make the switch before Firmino rises. No FT left, but if i make the switch I will take one hit and get Firmino in for Kane and bring in Alli for Willian next week. Willian will soon be at rotation risk, so I think this is a sensible move.

Sideways moves. You are taking a hit and requiring another transfer to be made next week and you don't know what will happen at the weekend. Either combo could outscore the other.

You will only want Kane back the week after and take another hit

I am not his owner, but I will stick unless you need money ($6 is not too cheap when a bunch of okay cheapies available at mid)
