Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Europa League

Michael Keane and Idrissa Gueye get the goals as Everton move closer to a place in the group stages of the Europa League, with new signing Gylfi Sigurdsson watching from the stands.

Shape shifting for Sigurdsson?

Having started with a 3-4-2-1 against Stoke City on Saturday, the ever-flexible Ronald Koeman went with a 4-2-3-1 for the visit of Hajduk Split, and it is a shape that seems to suit his personnel well.

Davy Klaassen looked bright as the most advanced of the midfield three – a position that Sigurdsson could easily fill and may well covet.

But Koeman’s liking for two wide men on either side of a lone striker, in this case Wayne Rooney, gives the Icelander scope to operate from the left. It is a role he performed at Swansea City very effectively, and one that would enable the Everton manager to field both of his major midfield signings.

Sigurdsson’s move to Goodison immediately made him the most popular Everton midfielder in Fantasy Premier League, bringing 6.1% ownership with him.

Those managers might have to wait a while longer to see their man in action, however, as Koeman made clear post-match:

“We will do some tests to see about Gylfi’s physical state. He needs game-time, but if it’s game-time he needs – it will be with the first team. I don’t know if he’ll be involved on Monday (away at Man City), but we will make that decision on Sunday.”

Rotation not for Ronald

Koeman said, earlier in the week, that:

“We don’t reserve people for Monday. We like to be part of Europe. We will put a strong team in.”

And he was true to his word.

Eight of the side who started against Stoke took to the field against Split.

A return to a back four meant Phil Jagielka stood down, while makeshift wing-back Dominic Calvert-Lewin was replaced by Kevin Mirallas wide on the left and Ademola Lookman caught the eye, in the first-half at least, on the opposite flank as Sandro missed out with a knock.

Should Everton make the group stages and Koeman continues to target European advancement, it could prove to be a double-edged sword for Fantasy managers.

It would be good to know that Koeman is likely to pick his core performers consistently, but the Europa League’s Thursday night schedule and far-flung locations has sapped the life from all but the strongest of Premier League squads over the years.

Everton’s transfer dealings have upped the quality at Goodison, but whether there’s sufficient strength in depth remains to be seen.

Much revolves around Rooney

The one constant in Everton’s pre-season and early matches of what could be a gruelling campaign has been that Ronald Koeman clearly rates Wayne Rooney.

Whether the England man plays up front, on the flank or as an advanced midfielder, the point is that he plays.

Some 16.5% of FPL managers own him, and they will buoyed by his form – he scored on Saturday and set up Gueye’s goal last night – and that he also gets the minutes.

Against Split, Koeman brought Calvert-Lewin on and put him through the middle up front in Rooney’s starting position.

But Rooney stayed on and it was Klaassen who departed, with the striker dropping back into the Dutchman’s place.

Two more substitutions followed, each requiring a shift in the veteran forward’s role, neither of which involved a trot to the bench for a well-earned rest.

Toffees’ defenders deliver

Fantasy veteran Leighton Baines could well be in for yet another productive campaign.

This is his 12th season in the top flight and he’s produced triple-digit returns in all but three of them.

The 11.2%-owned defender was used as a wing-back against Stoke and a left-back last night, providing the assist for Keane’s opening goal. He also scored in the previous round of the Europa League.

Baines’ set-piece delivery and penalty-taking expertise also elevate him and whether Koeman opts for a three or four-man defence, he expects plenty of attacking intent from his defenders out wide.

Summer signing Keane, meanwhile, opened his competitive account for Everton with the first goal, a close-range header, against the Croatians.

After returning eight points for his 14.1% FPL ownership in Gameweek 1, the centre-half put in another assured display.

Keane managed two strikes for a goal-shy Burnley outfit last season.

And his underlying stats suggest he could be on for a lot more in a considerably more progressive Everton side.

Only three defenders produced more headed attempts than his 16, while 22 efforts in the box was just three less than the number one ranked defender, Chelsea’s Marcos Alonso (25).

Yet Everton’s evil upcoming schedule – trips to both Manchester sides and Chelsea and a visit from Spurs in the next four – is enough to deter investment in their main men until the schedule turns kinder in Gameweek 6.

Löwe took almost as many corners as Mooy last year but didn't take any in the first game. Pens, likely, yes.

Took their last one of the normal season, went first on both shootouts and scored, plus 90+% on their fan forum reckon that.

        My take:

Mooy took two last season but had his second one saved.

Their only open play penalty after that was taken and scored by Chris Lowe whilst Mooy was on the pitch so I think he might have pinched them. Lowe also won that penalty so I guess it's possible that played a part but my hunch is it didn't.

Lowe and Mooy both scored in the 2 penalty shootouts that Huddersfield had in the playoffs. Lowe took 1st penalty and Mooy 4th on both occasions. Both of those are important positions so can't read much into that.

I don't have a compelling argument but if I were betting on it I'd punt on Lowe taking the pens.

Also, Jonty asked the Radio Yorkshire DJ who interviews him every week about it as he's a huge Huddersfield fan and the short version was that nobody knows but he fancied Lowe to be ahead of Mooy with Ince being the wildcard.

Regardless of whether you own him or not, do you think KdB is a genuine candidacy option? I can't help but think that 10m is a rather large price for a player I'd never feel comfortable captaining.

no chance. baines is famously a bit of a wallflower who wouldn't make that kind of move, and rooney is a big personality who will want every goal he can get. I would be extremely surprised if anyone other than rooney takes them when he;s on the pitch.

Mahrez. He was influential away to a strong team last week and should pull the strings against a Brighton team which I would expect to sit back and try to absorb punishment.

Leicester won't have much space for balls behind for Vardy so it will be down to the Algerian to beat challenges and create space for pinpoint passes (through-balls have to be so much more precise when there is less space available) and possibly pick up scraps from shots outside the box.

Ritchie maybe. Has a decent record against Huddersfield, scored against them last season, has penalties in his locker as well.

Having won last season's corresponding fixture 3-1 (only 5 months ago), Newcastle will be confident in this game against another promoted team. We are unlikely to see the same cautious approach as they showed against Spurs.

      1. Hairy Potter
        • 9 Years

The score line from last season doesn't tell the whole story. Newcastle very much surrendered possession and hit Huddersfield on the break. Huddersfield had over 75% of possession.

It was also during a period of big games in the Championship for Newcastle against their rivals, which impacted Rafa's strategy.

None of this makes Ritchie necessarily a bad choice though!

Yes. But I might be wrong. I think Ritchie is more certain of starts over the next 4-5 games and he has lots of ways to score points with his assist threat, set pieces and so on.

Atsu is a player I have always liked but his end product was never very reliable. I'd take Ritchie myself.

I'm taking a punt on Atsu this week. Look fairly threatening against Spurs, considering Newcastle were down to 10 men. I know people are picking Ritchie for Newcastle coverage but Atsu looks more suited to a counter-attacking style which I think they'll employ against Huddersfield away.

Matt Ritchie. With Shelvey out, he's gonna have all the corners/free kicks now. Plus he's on penos. I think it will be a high scoring game(7 goals total in their 2 matches last season) also giving Mounie and Mooy another chance to shine against a weekened Newcastle defence.

Seems there's a faulty line in your own thinking if you're trying to establish a trend using notoriously unreliable pre-season stats and a single game's stats to support the argument for keeping.

I choose to not go with KdB based on a career history and the stats about which you are talking. I find KdB to be a greater gamble than Eriksen and if anything I think the mean that KdB will regress to is closer the cornerflag than the goalmouth - he is not a goalscorer :0.

That .5 is key and will become .6 or even .7 within a fortnight.

He's the main assist threat in a side which most tip to be highest scorers. No reason he couldn't be far and away the highest mid this year. On that assumption, cost becomes irrelevant I.E 250+ essential.

They've been there or therabouts and i see nothing to say they will outscore spurs/united

You're relying on a number of things to change for KdB to make that leap

                        1. He needs 300 more minutes than last season
                        2. United need to keep 4 or 5 more clean sheets than last season
                        3. He needs to score minimum 2-3 goals this season

and this is probably just to match Alli or Eriksen (assuming their output remains the same)

Maybe you're right but now isn't a brilliant time to shift IMO. Everton will play City and likely be demolished. I have faith he will score more this season.

                      Alternatives:
Eriksen Vs Chelsea - Unlikely haul?
Mane - Rotation risk with UCL>?

I have both. KDB will start producing, he's on corners and free kicks as well as pushing forward. Id give him 3 games as well. Not sure who I would bring in as a replacement though. Maybe Mik/pogba. Tough run for Liverpool from GW3-9.

I just have the double up on Eriksen and Alli. Both are better value imo and the extra .5 takes me up to Mihki/Poggles from the dross in the 7-7.5 bracket

Vaguely tempted by Aguero because my impression without researching is that Man City often seem to go ballistic in home games at this stage of the season, Salah (but put off by doubts over gametime) or Alli because Chelsea seem in disarray and he scored well against them every game last season.

Going with Lukaku though - good GW1 and against a defence that as you point out was very generous last week.

I saw an interview with Jesus the other day and he was basically saying that he is going to be competing with Aguero for goals all season and wants to beat him. Probably why Jesus was a bit frustrated last weel, I expect he scores for sure this weekend. Double up of Kun and Jesus will be in my team at some point for sure

Agreed. Was a tough choice, but opted for Sergio from the start, though long term may switch to Jesus. Clearly Pep's fav of the two, and I think Aguero's pitch time may be reduce when Champions League starts.
