Captain Sensible – Gameweek 2

Next up, we assess the chief captaincy contenders for the upcoming round of fixtures in our regular pre-Gameweek members’ article.

We delve into the Opta numbers and also check up on the Rate My Team ratings before suggesting a differential or two to consider.

With only one Gameweek of data, we are waiting until after this weekend’s matches before adding the usual Player and Team data tables to the analysis.

The Captain Poll

Romelu Lukaku is the runaway leader of our Captain Poll for the second Gameweek in succession.

The Mancheter United frontman earns 46% of the votes cast after bagging a brace on his debut against West Ham last Sunday.

Now owned by over 52% of Fantasy Premier League managers, Lukaku faces a Swansea City side that conceded 34 times in front of their own fans last term – the second-worst record in the top-flight.

Liverpool supply three of the top five players this week ahead of a plum home clash with Crystal Palace.

Mo Salah (8%) and Robert Firmino (7%) lead the way after both supplied a goal and an assist in the 3-3 draw against Watford, with spot-kicks boosting Firmino’s appeal.

Sadio Mane also notched at Vicarage Road but claims just 5% of the votes against a defence that shipped three goals at home to Huddersfield Town.

Only 6% are willing to place their faith in Harry Kane as Spurs welcome Chelsea to Wembley.

Sold by more FPL managers than any other forward in the Gameweek after failing to net at Newcastle United, the England man scored more goals at home than any player last season.

He also fired more shots and efforts inside the box than any frontman in the opening round of fixtures.

There’s no stand-out contender for Manchester City’s home encounter with Everton, with armband differentials Gabriel Jesus,(3%) Sergio Aguero and Kevin De Bruyne (both 2%) all earning similar backing.

Pep Guardiola’s new 3-3-2-2 set-up means that Jesus and Aguero are likely to lead the line again on Monday night.

Impressively, Jesus produced returns in all four of his home starts last term, totalling four goals and two assists in those fixtures.

Although Aguero scored just five of his 20 goals at home last season, an average of 16.9 minutes per shot was quicker than any forward in front of their own fans.

City’s most popular player, playmaker De Bruyne sits in 28% of squads on the back of last year’s 21 assists – the Belgian created more big chances at home than any player in 2016/17.

Jamie Vardy and Steve Mounie both scored twice on their travels last weekend and now entertain promoted Brighton and Newcastle respectively.

Only 3% have opted for the Leicester City frontman, who has been quick to maintain the form that saw him average 7.0 points per match under Craig Shakespeare last time out.

Subject to more transfers-in than any forward this week, Vardy scored or assisted in six of the Foxes’ seven home matches after their mid-season change of manager.

Mounie, meanwhile, has emerged as the first budget bandwagon up front for the visit of Newcastle’s injury-ravaged rearguard.

Arriving on the back of 14 goals and three assists for Montpellier last term, the Huddersfield target man has hit the ground running with a brace in last week’s mauling of Crystal Palace.

3 here... Jesus, Firmino and Sarah

It's Lukaku easily for me. 54% ownership, it's like the days of Ronaldo all over again.

        This will change I think

When Mourinho starts to control the matches more, I think he'll go for the 1 goal victories

Makes no sense. 1 goal turns into a draw, we saw it most of last season. Utd to be a goal machine this season with clean sheets to boot.

Mourinho only kills games he thinks he might lose. Otherwise his teams are free scoring. Last year they were seriously hampered by Zlatan being very slow so they lost out by not having an effective counter attack speed. He's rectified that. I expect goals galore.

I was on mane all week, even now it is on him, but not captaining a player who is almost owned by 50% managers, out of which 35-40% will captain him is dangerous. If he does the repeat then non captainers are doomed

Rom's ownership + WHU scared me GW1. Don't have that this week, mildly annoying Mané missed training today but surely he'll start.

Play Loftus Cheek or take a hit to get Eriksen in?

I'll be getting Eriksen in after the deadline anyway regardless.

    1. Deulofail
      • 8 Years
      6 years, 8 months ago

Depends if there's anything you're sure you'd want to do next week anyway. If so then hitting can be justified as it brings a chain of transfers forward that you would have had to delay to avoid hits, so you're getting more than Eriksen to counter the hit. Does that make sense.

Basically no. But maybe yes if there's something else you'd like to correct next week.

      1. Deulofail
        • 8 Years

        It's makes sense.

I have nothing in the pipeline but I'm just worried Eriksen may rise before the deadline and price me out of the move.

        1. @FPL_Audit - Romano
          • 8 Years
          6 years, 8 months ago

Don't think Eriksen will rise, but if you're 100% on bringing him in after the deadline anyway, and the alternative is RLC +4 points, just take the hit.
He could well get something at home to Chelsea, and even if he doesn't, it makes you more flexible next week as already mentioned

          1. Deulofail
            • 8 Years
            6 years, 8 months ago

I agree with this after all I said. I haven't been keeping an eye on prices since I'm saving my FT, but you'll hate yourself if he does rise! Just expect to lose points this week so you're not disappointed!

I don't want to take a hit but my only regret was not keeping Eriksen in my side after ditching him on deadline day. I'm already regretting it and I'm certain I want him, so I'm worried about his impending price rise potentially happening tonight.

Listening to Pep sounds like Mendy might be in contention Monday night ( said words to effect Mendy nearly there and all players fit for contention) so is anyone concerned Mendy might start and Danilo comes on later in game. Or not at all if Sane comes on? Beginning to feel better to play JWP and bench Danilo ......

Thanks for the reply......fixtures are very poor after Everton next week and Chelsea look all over the place defensively at the moment. £6.0m a lot tied up in a defender i'm not sure on!? Think I've talked myself into Lowe.....

Frankly speaking, it's a bad choice to have Luiz at the start.

But you should read the fixture situation of Chelsea's before GW1. You should also have watched the Community Shield... My suggestion is, recall the good reason why you put him there. If the reasons are not valid anymore, sell him.

Sorry for repost. Maybe there are some Draft experts on the new article?

523 in FPL; 523 in the Draft!
It's the Corset: Going big in the bust and the bottom.

    Schmeichel
    Kola Baines Moses Cedric Maguire
    Mata Silva
    Giroud Aguero Morata
    Jaku | Sane Pedro Sterling

They're a bunch of liabilities, granted, but otherwise it's slim pickings in a 10-team league. My best choices are probably:

    A) Mirallas
    B) Shaqiri
    C) Fer
    D) Matic
    E) Stick with Sterling for now. It could haunt you later if you release him.

    1. Deulofail
      • 8 Years
      6 years, 8 months ago

One vote for keeping Sterling from the last article.

Otherwise Giroud out for someone like Murray, Berahino, J.Ayew. Feels like it's worth holding on to Giroud in case he gets a run in the team later in the season, or for some reason Wenger pairs him with Laca
