Captains

Captain Poll – Gameweek 3

A single match remains in Gameweek 2, but we’re already looking forward to the weekend as we browse the key players likely to make an impact in our latest Captain Poll, which is now open.

A tussle between two heavyweight strikers, one with exceptional form and another who has struggled to find the net, is set to be the main battle among our armband options.

With a third goal in two appearances, as Manchester United registered a second successive 4-0 victory last weekend, Romelu Lukaku (11.6) looks on course to once again dominate proceedings.

The runaway leader of our last two polls is owned by 55.3% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers and has another favourable encounter when Leicester City drop by Old Trafford on Saturday. While the Foxes kept a clean sheet against newly promoted Brighton at the weekend, their 4-3 away loss in Gameweek 1 to Arsenal may give a better indication of how their defence will fare.

Indeed, they have now conceded at least two goals in five of their seven away matches with Craig Shakespeare in charge.

Unlike Lukaku, Harry Kane (12.5) has severely tested his 30.8% ownership after two blanks in a row.

But will his impressive underlying statistics and a home tie against Burnley punish the 200,000 FPL managers who have jettisoned the Spurs talisman since the start of the season?

This may well be the case. Burnley kept just two clean sheets on the road in 2016/17 and Kane has had more shots than any other Premier League player so far. It would be no surprise to see the England striker break his August goal drought against the Clarets.

There’s also an impressive cast list of co-stars to garner interest.

Paul Pogba (8.1) – now FPL’s joint-highest points scorer with two goals and as many assists – is another strong Manchester United option, as is Henrikh Mkhitaryan (8.1), who is just two points behind his French colleague’s 23-point tally, courtesy of four assists.

More than 161,000 FPL managers have brought in Pogba since Saturday, while 76,000+ have recruited the Armenian.

Christian Eriksen (9.5) and Dele Alli (9.5) present highly credible Spurs alternatives to Kane, particularly the 18.8%-owned Danish playmaker, who has assisted all three of Spurs goals this season.

Alli boasts strong form in front of his own fans if Spurs can shrug off their Wembley woes, though – he bettered Eriksen by nine goals to five at home in 2016/17.

Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero (11.5), Gabriel Jesus (10.5) and Kevin De Bruyne (10.0) could lead the chasing pack as they travel to a Bournemouth side that has conceded the second highest amount of close range efforts so far.

Their backers will perhaps be holding off casting their vote until after tonight’s encounter with Everton at the Etihad.

Of the trio, De Bruyne may be the player most keenly watched for a sign he can justify his 10.0 price tag amongst increasing competition for midfield places – most notably from the red half of Manchester. More than 126,000 of his owners have already seen enough and parted company with the Belgian, who failed to find the net against Brighton in Gameweek 1 despite his four goal attempts.

Liverpool trio Roberto Firmino (8.5), Sadio Mane (9.5) and Mo Salah (9.1) will also look to profit against Arsenal’s defence at Anfield on Sunday.

The Reds scored seven times in their two league matches against the Gunners last term, with Mane the only player to net on both occasions.

Having notched in Gameweek 1 and 2, the Senegal international approaches this one in fine form, while we expect Jurgen Klopp to roll out a full-strength XI for the weekend and return Salah to his front three, after he was utilised as a sub against Palace.

The only side with a worse record than Bournemouth for conceding shots in the box is Swansea City, who travel to Selhurst Park and hand Eagles striker Christian Benteke (7.9) a chance to get among the goals. But he will have to improve on his meagre tally of just four shots in two matches if he is to gather interest.

West Ham could provide two intriguing differential captaincy candidates for Gameweek 3 – midfielder Michail Antonio (7.5) and striker Javier Hernandez (7.0) – when they travel to a Newcastle United side that has shipped three without reply this season.

While the 22.2%-owned Mexican grabbed the Gameweek 2 headlines with a brace against Southampton, Antonio also impressed in his first competitive match following a lengthy injury lay-off, firing four shots, three of which were close range and on target. With a 0.2% ownership, he is among the lowest-owned players in our poll list.

The stock of Chelsea’s stars as poll contenders took a severe knock after defeat at home to Burnley in Gameweek 1, but victory over Spurs yesterday could revive their fortunes, in particular for their rampaging left wing-back Marcos Alonso (7.0). The 12.7%-owned Spaniard’s brace against the Blues’ London rivals offered a powerful reminder of why he is one of the few defenders who can be considered for the captaincy.

Similarly, his compatriot Alvaro Morata (10.0) grabbed a goal and assist on his home debut off the bench in Gameweek 1 and looks set to lead the line at the expense of Michy Batshuayi against the Toffees.

The poll is now live in the middle column on your homepage on desktop, or via the slide-in menu on mobile and tablet under Recent Comments.

Remember, we are looking for your vote for the player you think will be most effective, regardless of whether you own them or not.

We will be back to check in on progress in the poll later ahead of the Gameweek 3 deadline when we deliver our “Captain Sensible” article offering an analysis of the results and the statistics behind the leading contenders.

    Trippier / Bertrand / Zanka

    Kane / Lukaku / Mounie

    Elliot / Carroll / Suttner / Long

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Can Kane be trusted with the armband?

If you own him are you captaining him? If you don't who are you captaining?

Could Eriksen be a better option - 100% goal involvement so far for Spurs or are Kane's underlying stats too powerful. The goal storm is coming at some point but will the Hurrikane strike this weekend or later?

And what of Lukaku - why not just captain him for the forseeable?

It has to be Lukaku or Kane. United bullied Leicester last year and Luka has the form to suggest it is lower risk, but once one goes in for Kane they are all going to.

Feel like I've been lucky captaining Lukaku two weeks in a row, not willing to push it with a third. Had Kane the past two weeks, 14 shots 11 in the box surely, *surely* he must get a result BUR... I have to captain him.

I love Erik as a captain option Jonty, and is perhaps the "safe" pick with involvement and BAPs, but Kane feels better and has that explosive potential, which we all search for from our captain.

Eriksen for me, at this point in the week. Not bringing Kane in yet. Eriksen has been involved with every goal and even if spurs play crap he could grab a set piece assist or even a couple of bp for his stats alone. Seems to be the least risk option.

I'm going for Kane(c). Chelsea were superb defensively and are the best in the league at absorbing pressure. Kane was extremely unlucky not to score and you'd expect him to finish against Burnley due to less pressure.

Lone strikers always seem the best bet for the captaincy, Aguero and Jesus playing in a pair rules them out for me.

Kane and Lukaku are the only options for me right now. Lukaku has proved worthy so far, Kane has the stats to get off the mark next week and I will shift the armband to him.

I saw Burnley at the weekend & watched them numerous times last season for work. In my opinion they are a team who raise their game when they play the bigger teams but are prone to moments where they switch off. They like to pile players behind the ball just like Tony Pulis' teams of old used to do & prefer it when their opponents have possession, attacking on the counter.

The problem is, they seriously lack confidence away from home. Don't let the Chelsea game cloud your judgement- the Clarets conceded twice against the champions & only won one away game last year, conceding 35 times in the process.

Harry Kane's underlying stats prove a goal is due- and Burnley's defence has only kept 1 clean sheet in their last 8 PL games, with largely the same back 4 as the end of last season. Why are we doubting him?

      1. Kenneth Tang
        • 11 Years

Burnley doesn't have the same back four. No Michael Keane will only make Burnley even worse. Chelsea scored against them when playing with 9 only.

I did say largely- although worth noting that Michael Keane didn't play at all during May due to injury & Kevin Long & James Tarkowski filled in. You're right though, they certainly don't look as solid as they did before.

For me it is definitely Kane. The fixture is there, the form is not yet there but the statistics Show it is imminent, and most important of all, having drifted behind at 500k and having spent 12.5 on 2 blanks, I need a reason to justify why I had him in, why he is a differential and why I stuck with him. I need him for my inner consistency as well as my team's.

I'll be captaining Kane for sure.

Burnley don't travel particularly well, and I'm hoping that the width of the pitch at Wembley will make it even more difficult for them to keep it tight at the back.

Pitch dimensions (in yards) as per a quick Google search:
      - Wembley: 115 x 75
      - Turf Moor: 104 x 66

Kane (c) for me (I also own Lukaku).

Kane has more attempts (6) than anyone else in the game from set plays, so Eriksen is even more likely than not to benefit from a Kane haul.

For that reason I'm tempted to go KdB->Eriksen this week before WC.

Absolutely he can, the knee jerking on this site is hilarious. Kane was playing against Chelsea, those kind of games I generally wouldn't even captain my best player, I would be looking for a differential with an easier fixture. Having said that, Kane looked excellent against Chelsea, a real threat. Those selling him are crazy and I imagine trying to chase Alonso points by shoe horning him in using Kane money. Kane should be nailed on captain if you have him.

Crazy. So surprised how many are keeping faith with him as captain considering the stadium move, slow starts to seasons and then the Burnley history. Burnley also just beat Chelsea away.

Of course Kane could completely cut loose but if you've got Lukaku playing in the most in form team in the league with a good fixture at home why gamble on a player like Kane with no form?

I have Lukaku and Kane. I'm confident to put the armband on Kane.

Lukaku had one chance and took it. Kane works too hard to ignore his efforts.

A 12.5 player should justify the armband almost every gw, but Kane hasn't yet justified 12.5. I wouldn't be ditching if I had him, but I'd go with form of Luka for capt if I had both.

Scout Pick Community Champion Lottery – Gameweek 3

For the second time this season we are on the look out for a champion to represent the community to take on the Scout Picks and win the chance of a prize.

If you want to take part please email your FFS name and FPL ID number to community@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk .

The champion will then be selected at random shortly after the deadline of 9am Wednesday and then be asked to submit their XI by Friday 10am by emailing me at jonty@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk

We only need 11 picks and please be mindful of the 83m budget. There’s no captain in the picks either and please stick to a designated FPL formation, including no more than three players from one team. No captain or chips will be applied.

At the end of the season the champion who beats the picks by the highest margin will win a £100 Amazon voucher.

The champion will be revealed in a midweek Scout Squad article, which will outline our initial thinking around the picks. Our and the champions picks will be revealed as usual in the Scout Picks article.

Should the community “Champion” fail to provide an initial or final Scout Pick selection, then an “Assistant Manager” chosen by us, will gain control of the selection to represent the community for the Gameweek in question.

Jonty, do you think after tonights game, Danilo is now a defender who could add value to our teams? He came on and looked a threat, now Walker is suspended, it could be a chance to cement his place?

seeing lots of snide comments from united fans re Ibra re signing, saying he would make a great squad player etc

he carried your team on his back last season and you wouldnt have won your... eh, 'treble'...... without him.

    short memories.

There comes a point when even the greatest have to accept their diminshed role.

Even though he scored lots last season - compared to the chances they created another striker would have scored far far more.

They now have that striker in Lukaku....which does make Ibra now a very good squad player to fill in or come on in games. Given his age and diminishing returns and coming back from a major injury I wouldn't say that's unfair to Ibra - if anything its high praise for a player his age.

It was the midfielders that didnt chip in with goals last season, Ibra weighed in with what any top striker would have been expected to. theres a lot of laurels being polished by united fans after two explosive wins .its warranted, they look great, but lets be fair to those that laid the foundation for this. No ibra goals would have meant no champions league place and therefore no lukaku. Pogba and Mhiki are performing now, but didn't in the transitional season

He missed so many chances though. It got so bad during his early drought that I removed him from the goals imminent table as it was such an outlier.

He's a great player still and last year was great but arguably a better striker like say Kane or Lukaku would have got them into the Champions League through the front door, not the back.

But yes - the mids were awful at scoring too.

He can completely change the dynamic if he comes on and United are chasing the game. If the opposition are camped in their own box and you need guile rather than pace to unlock them then I can't think of a better impact sub, even at 800 years old.

Indeed. Ibra would probably relish that too - blustering his way onto the pitch and scoring the winner.

Don't forget in a cut throat business United also allowed the out of contact legend to receive treatment, recover, and train at their club when they didn't have to.

I think it's been a respectable relationship both ways.

Lukaku also won't be used to playing so deep in all competitions so Ibra won't just be a squad player. He'll also play in all competitions where his experience will be invaluable.

      I think you're overreacting.

How long should we persevere with Kane? He has the stats and the fixtures, but he's only delivered me 3 points so far (captain in GW1...).

I also think the opportunity cost has been severe - he ties up more funds and the other premium strikers would have released £1-2m which would have upgraded Fabregas to one of Pogba, Mkhi, Erikson or Alli (latter two with some other tinkering).

I know he will come good eventually and the glut of goals at the end of last season show just how explosive he can be - but I'm already 50 behind in my mini-league cos I went with him. The only consolation is that I'm pretty sure I'd have gone for Jesus instead - fingers crossed he blanks tonight.

If Kane blanks next week, I think I might need to offload.

His performances suggest points, but the width a post has denied him goals now on two occasions. Had he delivered you two goals, would you be happy to hold?

I'm in a similar boat, although I've not captained him. I've certainly been wondering what I could do with the extra 2.0 if I went for Jesus instead.

One thing to consider in all of this is that during the international break, I assume Aguero and Jesus will be away to S. America.

It's really interesting because on the one hand hitting the post is a close shot that has the keeper beaten (unless that keeper has impeccable judgment)

On the other hand, it's a shot off-target.

    Hey guys

Got three problems in my Squad:

    Fabregas
    Fraser
    and Danillo

Is it worth playing my WC? Was planning to play it in the international break but maybe I need to play it abit more ealier..

Altough Fabregas does like to come of the bench and give an assist or two so that isn't really the most supressing problem

He had a poor game - but perhaps because he came back from injury a little too soon?

You could be right though re Wembley pitch size - it is hugely different and I remember Antonio commenting last season that the move to the London Stadium's bigger pitch took him and the other wing players quite a while to adjust to.
