This Much We Know – Gameweek 2

The Fantasy Gods once again take delight in punishing our jerking knees, budget midfielders vie for our attention and early baths are run all at stadiums all over the country.

Here’s the current Hall of Fame #1 Peter Kouwenberg’s take on another frown-inducing Gameweek.

We need Statto back and fast

Like Socrates, the one thing we know is that we know nothing. Without the reassuring illumination of several weeks’ form and statistics, many FPL managers feel like Thucydides’ account of two ancient armies fighting in the darkness and causing more harm than good through their aimless actions.

Gameweek Two was a prime example.

Based on nothing more than their first 90 minutes of the season being pointless, there were high profile casualties amongst some popular Fantasy Football Scout choices.

Marcos Alonso suffered a net ownership drop of over 65,000 managers, while Javier Hernández (73,000) and Manolo Gabbiadini (34,000) also fell victim to the impatience of the FPL beast, only for the trio to hit back with 16 points, 13 points and seven points respectively in Gameweek 2.

At the time of writing, Hernández is now the most transferred-in player of the week, with almost three hundred thousand new owners. He has four very alluring fixtures in the next five Gameweeks – what a difference a goal or two can make.

By contrast, the hugely popular Ben Davies, Granit Xhaka and Steve Mounie mustered a grand total of five points to suggest that, while some bandwagons undoubtedly do pay off, it takes a particular blend of luck, skill and daring to identify successful diamonds when our statistics tables are so bereft of detailed information.

It is, therefore, difficult to know whether to remain patient or leap aboard the nearest or loudest bandwagon.

Harry Kane represents the acid test for his 1.4 million owners.

An ‘easy game hosting Burnley’ dredges up a horrible sense of déjà vu from last season, while Everton at Goodison Park is unlikely to herald a glut of goals for a striker famously yet to get off the mark in this or any other August.

But can we really overlook his table-topping 14 attempts on goal, 11 in the box and four on target?

More than 86,000 FPL managers can, having already transferred him out this week, whereas Fantasy Football Scout users have him as the stand-out captaincy choice with over 40% of this week’s vote.

So, for the moment at least…

Variety is the spice of life

Although summer is generally my least fruitful part of the season, it is (objectively) the most fascinating period, with an incredible array of options starting well and the notion of a template team banished firmly to the shadowy gloom of winter.

Who, for example, would have expected to see four Watford players in double figures for FPL after two matches?

Despite having just called for caution in overusing truncated statistics, I can’t fail to be impressed Richarlison’s Premier League baptism.

Only the misfiring Harry Kane has had more shots in the box (11) than Andrade’s eight attempts, despite the Brazilian playing an hour less than most of his peers.

Abdoulaye Doucouré (5.1) is another one who may benefit from new manager Marco Silva’s fresh style – only four teams have had more efforts than Watford in the first two matches, whereas last season the Hornets were in the bottom half of the table for this statistic.

At 6.0, though, and with tough fixtures ahead after hosting Brighton this week, Richarlison suddenly finds himself in a hugely competitive price bracket.

Jesé Rodriguez (also 6.0) wasted no time after swapping Paris for the Potteries to produce a match winning performance against Arsenal. He fired in a shot every 23 minutes and sparkled in a wide attacking role.

Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting (£5.5m) also managed three shots in the box and is another to monitor once Stoke City’s fixtures hit a purple patch, starting with a visit from Bournemouth in Gameweek 9.

Much was expected of Huddersfield Town’s record signing, Aaron Mooy (5.6), among the community and only three midfielders lead the ex-Manchester City midfielder on points at this stage.

Tucked away – both in his midfield position on the pitch and in most of the key statistics tables – Mooy has nonetheless matched Richarlison’s goal and assist from two games.

He certainly ‘passes the eye test’ and could become a great enabler with some appealing fixtures in the short term, before a visit to Wembley to face Spurs in Gameweek 7 signals a more challenging run of opponents.

We need to watch men in black too

When it comes to referees, I could moan for a living about poor decisions, but would barely qualify for your Sunday pub league when it comes to actually picking up a whistle.

Listening to last night’s post-match radio confirmed that I’m not alone in this role, as a succession of Manchester City fans came on to defend Kyle Walker and vilify Ronald Koeman’s touchline antics, while the Evertonion callers inevitably rallied around the ill-treated Morgan Schneiderin (blindly overlooking Calvert-Lewin’s dubious reaction leading to the Walker red card).

Nonetheless, those dismissals brought the crimson count up to seven already, and we may need to take note of card magnets as much as bonus magnets.

Last season saw a record number of bookings in the Premier League (3.7 per match), and the early figures suggest that we should expect a similar number of yellow cards to be flourished by the men in the middle.

However, there were only 1.2 red cards per Gameweek in the Premier League last season (46 in total) and this year seven unfortunates have already enjoyed an early season rest, which makes for a whopping 3.5 dismissals per Gameweek average.

This may, of course, be partly due to match officials across the country unwrapping their shiny new decks and deciding that they need to catch up on June and July’s wasted opportunities, but perhaps the apparent move towards football as a non-contact sport should have a far greater credence in our team selection.

Gary Cahill, Marko Arnautović, Cesc Fàbregas and Jonjo Shelvey all have past form for disciplinary issues, with previous seasons littered with yellow, and even a few red, cards.

While it may seem unlikely that the current rate of dismissals will be maintained (133 red cards in a season would surely leave some teams struggling to get a side out), I will certainly be paying greater heed to my potential targets’ behaviour on the pitch.

Last night, only four points separated Nicolás Otamendi and Kyle Walker, but the greater penalty for Walker’s one million owners is that they now have to bench a 6.5 asset next week, or waste a precious transfer getting rid.

At this stage of the season, that’s the last issue we need to be dealing with.

      Morning all.

I've had a poor start to the season and feeling I should do something drastic to change this, i.e. take a few hits or even wildcard.

On the other hand I feel I should probably just bite my tongue and leave it be for another week or two and then re-assess.

What is the consensus on here?

My team looks like this at the moment:

      Foster Elliot
      Kolasinac Stephens TAA Prodl Suttner
      KDB Willian Tadic Ritchie Carroll
      Kane Lukaku Firmino

      1 FT and 0.5 ITB

I stopped a bloke in the street and said, "Can you help me? I'm looking for a rubbish tip."

He replied, "Liverpool to win the Premiership."

I've noticed there seems to be a consensus that Kane and Lukaku are the best captaincy options and that we just slap the armband on one of them each week and it'll be fine - and I agree; they are the two best captaincy picks of the game as things stand right now. There was always a lot of talk about Kane as a captain option for GW3, but I've seen no talk whatsoever about the captaincy for GW4, and I wonder why.

On the scoutcast last night, Mark mentioned that the reason he thinks Kane is worth it at his price is that you'd captain him both home and away, whereas he's more sceptical of Lukaku's away prospects. And now while I agree with this for the most part, GW4 poses a problem as they both play away. Captain Kane then, you say? Well, his fixture is against Everton at Goodison Park. Unlikely captaincy material that imo.

Lukaku away to Stoke might be the better option, but I won't be confident. On the other hand, Arsenal has the very leaky Bournemouth at home, and there's a certain Sanchez expected to be back and potentially firing by then. Finding a way to bring in the Arsenal man and captaining him over the likes of Kane and Lukaku in GW4 could be a huge game changer.

Actually, if you bring in Sanchez and rotate the captaincy armband between him and Kane, you'll get these fixtures for your captain from GW4 onwards:

            BOU-SWA-WBA-BRI-BOU-LIV-SWA-CRY

If you manage to keep Lukaku along those two then captaining him away to Huddersfield over Kane at home to L'pool in GW9 could be an option, but I genuinely don't see any other week I'd prefer Lukaku as a captain over Kane/Sanchez - fixture wise that is.

The West Ham fixture at home to Huddersfield looks great.

Hernandez - if back from Mexico duties ship shape looks ideal.

Antonio too - I'm tempted by Ritchie to Antonio (c) that week...which on paper sounds like the most maverick move ever for me - but in reality is really dullard - good player, good fixture in a GWK where there is no standout among the heavy hitters.

I've got Ramsey and will be keeping him so he's a possibility against BOU. Could be the ideal week to go maverick if people aren't sure of Kane or Lukaku.

Those are great options for sure. Far easier to bring in than any Arsenal player bar Ramsey aswell. A week to take somewhat of a risk with the captaincy really.

I will consider it, but it ultimately comes down to wether we actually trust West Ham at home after all the heartaches last year.

I know, should have mentioned it. Just seems like stars are aligning for Sanchez - just about to return and a great fixture in GW4 when it looks tough for both Kane and Lukaku.

Just noticed I could go KDB and Firmino to Mkhitaryan and Lacazette (C) next week. Sure looks tasty.

This is over-planning in my opinion... Captaincy depends on (mostly) your gut feeling which is likely to change and I never plan for captaincy options in advance. You plan your players this way, yes, but as long as you have Lukaku and Kane you could go for them anytime you "feel". A player rarely delivers double digit points consecutively. So if Lukaku did it in the week you expect, the next week he is more likely to fail. When you know these kinds of data, 8 weeks planning seems a bit out of place in my opinion.

That's what I'm wondering - if I'm just overthinking this. But the main point wasn't the eight-weeks-in-advance thing, that was just to show how good it could look on paper. Main thing was to point out the likely tricky task of picking the right captain in GW4, and the potential an Arsenal player like Sanchez or Lacazette can bring to the table with their great fixture.

and I must admit that it's good work out here.. and I must confess that I also overthink... but over the years, I have started "calculating" less, as this is not chess and most of the game is beyond our control... Somehow I favour more instincts and form and statistics. Alonso's two goals is an example in point. He startes the game with 7.5 ppg. Stats and quality are there so you know he will deliver.

But then again, as Sanchez was my favorite captain last year, I will bear in mind your plan, if only he can start in form.

And yet still more than again; he has international duties prior to GW4 and when can you expect him to be fit, to overcome fatigue, to start playing well again? GW5? GW6?...

And thats why I'm considering getting rid of Lukaku when I play my WC (if I play it now or next week, at least)

              Captain will be
              Kane GW3 and 5
Lacazette (if he is the one I choose to replace Lukaku) or Chicha (my third striker for sure) in GW 4

Actually rotating Kane and Lacazette/Sanchez for captaincy really works for a few weeks now

Will be Chicharito for me I think.

I also think Lukaku will be the strongest captain option in GW7 and could reasonably be captained every week until then.

The idea that Lukaku can't be captained away is far-fetched. No forward scores as many goals away as at home in the long run, that doesn't only apply to Lukaku. But extrapolating his record at WBA and Everton into his potential at United is senseless. He is now playing for a far better team which will probably end the season as champions.

They all modelled their game on Jesper Grønkjær?

Jesus Navas and Nathan Redmond are other Grønkjær devotees. He has had a big influence in the game.

Key elements of the Grønkjær school:

                  1. Don't shoot when you can dribble.
                  2. Don't pass when you can dribble.
                  3. If you beat a player, go back and beat them again, the fans like it.
                  4. Don't tackle, save your energy for dribbling.
                  5. Crossing is for wusses.

Haha. I remember the frustration of watching Ginola in his second season at Newcastle and his reluctance to cross the ball and Shearer shouting at him. TBF Ginola wasn't afraid of shooting and the two goals he managed to get on target and score were crackers.

I miss the days of wingers trying to get to the byline and cross the ball.

              Hot topic!

What will Liverpool's teamsheet tonight tell us about who plays against Arsenal on Sunday.

If Firmino, Mane and Salah ...

              A) Play the full 90.
              B) Taken off as a sub

.... What does it mean for their game time against Arsenal?

I own Salah and I am very nervous. After last Saturday, he is clearly not nailed.

Salah Mane and Firm are all nailed if you ask me, but due to congested fixtures, there might be the odd game that one of them will be rested, but if you ask Klopp who his top 3 choices are for the forward line, I believe it will be those 3.

I now that wasn't helpful but I don't think there is a correct answer to your question.Could be anyone of those 3 being benched for fatigue reasons.

Should be. If I had to guess, I would say for gm wk 3, all 3 of them will start. Plus it is Arsenal, you would think that Klopp would want to field his strongest team.

Palace was the easiest and least important of our early congested schedule. I would imagine all 3 will play close to 90 tonight (unless we wrap up the tie before 60 mins) and vs Arsenal. Salah changed the game when he came on vs Palace and will bang the goals in this season I'm sure. Foolish to take him out imo.

Mane and Firm will play every PL game when fit IMO. Mane's fitness is incredible and Firmino is really important to them in the league as the one most likely to play as a lone striker.

Nothing. Both games will be full strength. He'll hope to get some key players subbed off tonight if all goes well.

Only where there are 2 equally good alternatives (Milner/Wijnaldum for example) might there be rotation. I suppose Sturridge could get a start against Arsenal but I somewhat doubt it. If so I'd imagine Salah would be the one to make way again.

Firmino will play every game imo. Klopp loves him and he fills a role in the team that nobody else can. Also seems to be very fit and hard working. From an FPL perspective he's on pens and is a midprice striker rather than a premium mid which makes him the best choice imo.

Mane should play every game, but is quite injury prone and thus may be rested occasionally if there is any concern as to his fitness, as they don't want to lose him for 3 months again.

Salah being new to the squad and the league is a bit of an unknown right now.

Provided they come through tonight unscathed, they'll all start on Sunday. I cannot see Klopp dropping any of them for the Arsenal game. Even this early in the season it's too big a game. He probably thought he could get away with fielding a weakened team against CPL, no chance of that on Sunday.

In my opinion, we will never know... There are so many reasons behind rotation most of which depend on things we do not see, such as fatigue, training work, what the manager speaks with the player, Klopp's brain etc. Therefore the important thing to know is that Liverpool will always rotate, and possibly more than other teams. That being the risk, the rest is history in my view...

Firmino is always subbed off at 70-75min which means he is the most nailed. Mane and Salah are a bit more risky and can see them rested when fixtures become congested

"clearly" not nailed is a bit strong 2 games in. With a congested schedule and the importance of games Palace was always going to be the only opportunity for Klopp to rotate. He won't do the same vs Arsenal or City.

Might Southampton now join the 3 at the back brigade

                  Stephens Hoedt Yoshida

Nothing to back it up. Just a hunch
                      - Allows Cedric and Bertrand to bomb forward with still adequate protection at the back.
                      - Redmond and Tadic get free roles
                      - If they keep VVD, then they have 4 good options at centre back and could maybe rotate yoshida/Stephens for the 3rd centre back role

Is doubling up on Pool a good idea? Mane seems somewhat "essential" and Firmino is arguably the best 3rd striker. Plus they're great against better teams, and have Arsenal and City up next. Both also seem somewhat immune to rotation (obviously I'll keep an eye on the game tonight).

No IMO but monitor team news to ascertain if Trippier will indeed play at the weekend.

Yoshida is a tricky one. I'd probably shift to Cedric as he barely has any competition.
