This Much We Know – Gameweek 2

The Fantasy Gods once again take delight in punishing our jerking knees, budget midfielders vie for our attention and early baths are run all at stadiums all over the country.

Here’s the current Hall of Fame #1 Peter Kouwenberg’s take on another frown-inducing Gameweek.

We need Statto back and fast

Like Socrates, the one thing we know is that we know nothing. Without the reassuring illumination of several weeks’ form and statistics, many FPL managers feel like Thucydides’ account of two ancient armies fighting in the darkness and causing more harm than good through their aimless actions.

Gameweek Two was a prime example.

Based on nothing more than their first 90 minutes of the season being pointless, there were high profile casualties amongst some popular Fantasy Football Scout choices.

Marcos Alonso suffered a net ownership drop of over 65,000 managers, while Javier Hernández (73,000) and Manolo Gabbiadini (34,000) also fell victim to the impatience of the FPL beast, only for the trio to hit back with 16 points, 13 points and seven points respectively in Gameweek 2.

At the time of writing, Hernández is now the most transferred-in player of the week, with almost three hundred thousand new owners. He has four very alluring fixtures in the next five Gameweeks – what a difference a goal or two can make.

By contrast, the hugely popular Ben Davies, Granit Xhaka and Steve Mounie mustered a grand total of five points to suggest that, while some bandwagons undoubtedly do pay off, it takes a particular blend of luck, skill and daring to identify successful diamonds when our statistics tables are so bereft of detailed information.

It is, therefore, difficult to know whether to remain patient or leap aboard the nearest or loudest bandwagon.

Harry Kane represents the acid test for his 1.4 million owners.

An ‘easy game hosting Burnley’ dredges up a horrible sense of déjà vu from last season, while Everton at Goodison Park is unlikely to herald a glut of goals for a striker famously yet to get off the mark in this or any other August.

But can we really overlook his table-topping 14 attempts on goal, 11 in the box and four on target?

More than 86,000 FPL managers can, having already transferred him out this week, whereas Fantasy Football Scout users have him as the stand-out captaincy choice with over 40% of this week’s vote.

So, for the moment at least…

Variety is the spice of life

Although summer is generally my least fruitful part of the season, it is (objectively) the most fascinating period, with an incredible array of options starting well and the notion of a template team banished firmly to the shadowy gloom of winter.

Who, for example, would have expected to see four Watford players in double figures for FPL after two matches?

Despite having just called for caution in overusing truncated statistics, I can’t fail to be impressed Richarlison’s Premier League baptism.

Only the misfiring Harry Kane has had more shots in the box (11) than Andrade’s eight attempts, despite the Brazilian playing an hour less than most of his peers.

Abdoulaye Doucouré (5.1) is another one who may benefit from new manager Marco Silva’s fresh style – only four teams have had more efforts than Watford in the first two matches, whereas last season the Hornets were in the bottom half of the table for this statistic.

At 6.0, though, and with tough fixtures ahead after hosting Brighton this week, Richarlison suddenly finds himself in a hugely competitive price bracket.

Jesé Rodriguez (also 6.0) wasted no time after swapping Paris for the Potteries to produce a match winning performance against Arsenal. He fired in a shot every 23 minutes and sparkled in a wide attacking role.

Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting (£5.5m) also managed three shots in the box and is another to monitor once Stoke City’s fixtures hit a purple patch, starting with a visit from Bournemouth in Gameweek 9.

Much was expected of Huddersfield Town’s record signing, Aaron Mooy (5.6), among the community and only three midfielders lead the ex-Manchester City midfielder on points at this stage.

Tucked away – both in his midfield position on the pitch and in most of the key statistics tables – Mooy has nonetheless matched Richarlison’s goal and assist from two games.

He certainly ‘passes the eye test’ and could become a great enabler with some appealing fixtures in the short term, before a visit to Wembley to face Spurs in Gameweek 7 signals a more challenging run of opponents.

We need to watch men in black too

When it comes to referees, I could moan for a living about poor decisions, but would barely qualify for your Sunday pub league when it comes to actually picking up a whistle.

Listening to last night’s post-match radio confirmed that I’m not alone in this role, as a succession of Manchester City fans came on to defend Kyle Walker and vilify Ronald Koeman’s touchline antics, while the Evertonion callers inevitably rallied around the ill-treated Morgan Schneiderin (blindly overlooking Calvert-Lewin’s dubious reaction leading to the Walker red card).

Nonetheless, those dismissals brought the crimson count up to seven already, and we may need to take note of card magnets as much as bonus magnets.

Last season saw a record number of bookings in the Premier League (3.7 per match), and the early figures suggest that we should expect a similar number of yellow cards to be flourished by the men in the middle.

However, there were only 1.2 red cards per Gameweek in the Premier League last season (46 in total) and this year seven unfortunates have already enjoyed an early season rest, which makes for a whopping 3.5 dismissals per Gameweek average.

This may, of course, be partly due to match officials across the country unwrapping their shiny new decks and deciding that they need to catch up on June and July’s wasted opportunities, but perhaps the apparent move towards football as a non-contact sport should have a far greater credence in our team selection.

Gary Cahill, Marko Arnautović, Cesc Fàbregas and Jonjo Shelvey all have past form for disciplinary issues, with previous seasons littered with yellow, and even a few red, cards.

While it may seem unlikely that the current rate of dismissals will be maintained (133 red cards in a season would surely leave some teams struggling to get a side out), I will certainly be paying greater heed to my potential targets’ behaviour on the pitch.

Last night, only four points separated Nicolás Otamendi and Kyle Walker, but the greater penalty for Walker’s one million owners is that they now have to bench a 6.5 asset next week, or waste a precious transfer getting rid.

At this stage of the season, that’s the last issue we need to be dealing with.

Bertrand > Trippier or De Bruyne > Eriksen? I wouldn't be surprised with a double digit return from KdB this weekend but he may drop in price and Eriksen may rise.

so if kdb drops, scores a brace, wouldnt people flock to him then his price will rise again? you need to be looking more long term buddy.

But wouldn't you like to get the points from his brace?
That said, I give him probably one last chance on GW3.
Not only waiting for points, but to see him playing more upfield and showing he gets moe involved in chances.

That's correct as his underlying stats are similar to Eriksen and he was affected by Walker's red card. I guess I'll keep him after all.

There was a post up yesterday about someone who took a -8, regretted it and then used their Free Hit chip believing it would remove the -8 similar to a wc does.
They said not only did the -8 stand but they also did not get to keep the 3 players they transferred in on the -8.

    To clarify:
Someone in my ml played their Free Hit this gw. they made their ft on the 12th and then played their Free Hir on the 14th and made many transfers. The original transfer played on the 12th stood and they now have that player.

    tl;dr
Free Hit lets you keep the player you bring in on a ft but doesnt remove hit points taken

I can understand if you have 2 FTs, use both for 2 new players. Afterwards you make more transfers and use the free hit chip, I could understand getting the 2 new players when you get the old team. Until I see a team with a hit and free hit chip used then it's working to a point.

Because therer would still be price rises / drops affecting there players, the Free hit doesn't stop you losing money on your existing players

so whoever you 'bought' you benefit from the price rise or miss the drop of players transffered out

Well it clarifies one thing for me.

It's more than a single free hit. You can activate the chip and then have unlimited free transfers for the rest of the week.

He made transfers on 12th, 14th, 15th and 16th. No points deducted.

Thoughts on best defender £5m or less to replace Ake?

Jones is the obvious choice, but worried about imminent rotation.

Otherwise Schindler or Dawson (would mean doubling up on WBA defence, which I'm not keen on).

I have Stephens and don't want to double up on Sou either.

Other option is to take a hit and downgrade KDB, Kola or Atsu and splash the cash.

Yes, that was in the past with a manager who hooked him on the 65-70min mark constantly.
Looks to have a better understanding with Pellegrino. He also looked very threatening vs. Swansea and scored a pen vs. West Ham.

It might be, but what I am saying is that Tadic is not confident penalty taker and don't be surprised if he misses one.
In terms of fpl returns Tadic always seems to be on the verge of delivering big but for some reason he cant do it.
I kept him for quite long run last season and eventually gave in, you never know maybe this season he will start turning good performances into fpl points.

Personally, seeing jesus being subbed over Aguero last night shows pep realises he didn't give kun enough respect last season. Jesus is potentially a rotational risk. Aguero out of 23 games I think, either put city in the lead or equalised 19 times. Jesus has an excellent record as well, but my money's on Aguero

Can see a lot of people playing their wildcards or planning to do so for the 1st International Break.
Some of the reason why I think wildcarding during 2nd IT break between GW7-8 is better:

      1. We'll have double the information. We'll get know which teams and players are being rotated for European games.

      2. There's also a huge fixtures shift between GW6-8.

      3. Sanchez, Hazard, Coutinho & Siggy haven't even started playing yet. All 4 have the potential to be N important part of our squads and also change their team dynamics.

      4. New signings are coming in and we don't know how it impact team line ups.

      5. 3 gameweeks is not enough information to build a squad for the long term as you'll probably be using your 2nd wildcard after GW30 which 30 weeks away.

For me there's too much uncertainty to wildcard this IT break so I will try my best not to knee jerk and use it next week.

      Appreciate your thoughts!

I like to base my teams on games I've watched and try watching as many as I can. Basing games on @blanked is so uninformed. KDB, Aguero and Kane are going to make so many people regret "getting rid" this week. Ill be playing my WC next week based on what Ive seen

I wrote similar earlier but didn't bother posting - most will dismiss it. Mahrez, Siggy, Son, Martial, Pedro, Sane, Sterling could all be great options (dare I say, better than the United pair) by then, let's see what happens. GW6/7 does look a good time to do it - I'm at least waiting til then.

Very sound advice. If at all possible, save the FT this week and have 2 during the international break to do a 'mini wildcard'.

It depends on your team though. I have Kaku Kane Chicha Salah Pogba and good enough defense. So, I might be able to drag myself upto GW 6. But people without United attack and some differentials absolutely gone wrong then, I think they need to go for it. Its better to play safe than to go behind so esrly with major surgeries(and hits).

      11. Bird Raymond
        • 12 Years
        6 years, 7 months ago

It depends on the state of your team. I take your point about the end of the transfer window and I certainly wouldn't look at playing it before it had 'slamed shut' if I could help it.

But if you feel you need to make a number of changes or change the structure of your team then the first international break is a great time to wildcard. You could delay playing it until December if you waited for more and more info. 3 weeks info is better than the 0 weeks info we had when we picked our initial squads.

We'll know the make up of the teams and some bargains usually emerge due to prem to prem transfers that we can jump on early. We'd know about Cout and Sanchez by then as well.

Good point by the other poster, I've always had an int break wildcard on mind so I've been watching as many matches as I can, so for example I am sure that after watching Jesus vs Brighton and Everton that he is a bad pick this season, wheras I've no doubts about keeping and captaining Kane.

Good summary here actually. The most important point, though, is that when you WC, you should have a team you believe in. It's not like the beginning of the season where you make a bet in what you believe in but you know a few pieces may fail and then you will take a hit. You can't do that with WC. You need to pick your team and stick to it for a while. So unless you are doubt-free you should not WC

How much data do you need to know that United, Spurs and Liverpool will score goals, Liverpool and Arsenal defences are not reliable, Southampton look solid and City will rotate?

Most wildcards will be made up with these teams, the only team who has surprised anyone is Chelsea who have had an indifferent start.

The promoted players and line ups have shown their heads now.

You won't learn much more in GW6 than you already know now, it's just the stigma of using it early that puts people off as they feel embraced that they wasted the Summer.

You'd be surprised, there's so many teams who didn't have those players or went Lukaku over Kane, had no clue about their cheap bench, went heavy on Chelsea for the opening week, invested a lot of funds in City or big strikers making the rest of their team weaker.

Your own insecurities don't apply to all.

Yes but all teams have players from these teams already. You should not WC to change from Salah to Mane, Kane to Eriksen and Lukaku to Mkhitaryan. It won't work. Teams' forms will change eventually. You need a solid idea and strategy of where you want to bei n 6 weeks and how you will achieve this.

Totally agree with this. Have an up-vote!

I always planned to use WC in GW3 but my team is not broken and I don't mind spending a few points to jump on ascending players and dump those going the other way. Have made 0.5m already.

Planning to WC in the 2nd International break, but could even hold on until after GW11 when there is another break and yet another fixture shift

I wanted to give Peter a bit more freedom rather than use the same format as previous seasons but perhaps we revert back?

I definitely want Peter to write it - we need more opinions in our writing plus, when I was writing it, I was often repeating content I'd edited into notes or Digest or the such like.

Fair play for being brave enough to post an unpopular opinion

I’ve been on here for years, but due to work commitments haven’t been as active for the last year. I felt the need to make a rare post in this case.

Peter is a breath of fresh air, if anything let him run with it. Fpl is a game that we all take far too seriously sometimes.

A smattering of humour and some facts is the perfect cocktail for me.

        Bravo!!!!

Ps JTD, doos, dusan, TM , wakey, and the grandad from only fools and horses if you’re all still around hope your doing well!

On reflection I think I like it, does less to reflect the herd mentality than the old one, FFS needs to offer new perspectives now the Scout etc cover the basics.

Small detail, but I'd love to see player names in bold. Sometimes I have time to read all the articles on this site, other times I only have time to skim them. Players names being in bold really helps when skimming and gathering a viewpoint on players I have or am considering getting at some point.

Personally it's a breath of fresh air... I like that it's light on stats cause that's how most play their FPL i feel.
It's easier to relate i feel.

Posted my (unbiased!) thoughts on a previous post but I really enjoyed the old article too.

I can't write in as focussed a way as Mark did - it's unfair to call that just stats based because it was an excellent read - so I do understand that the revamp will divide opinion.

Thanks for everyone's feedback. Even the criticism has been constructive.

Oh, but Daniel, you should check my current rank if you feel I deserve to be heard purely due to my FPL record 🙂

For me, this article should cut through all the noise and the haze and the confusion and uncertainty of an adrenaline pumped gameweek and cooly and calmly state the facts of what we know for sure.

I think Peter is doing a great job and the article is improving each week

I like the new format, but to be honest you had me at the Thucydides reference! First time I've ever seen him cited in connection to Fantasy Football, Herodotus next week perhaps? 🙂

Ruth made the comment earlier that Peter should be given more freedom, not less. I'm inclined to agree; in fact I quite like Peter's output so far. If others are disappointed by the change of format compared to the old TMWK, then perhaps a new title would appeal to both the yea- and naysayers here. With apologies to the Guardian, something along the lines of, 'The Long Read' 🙂

Agreed with some of the others on here, I really like the article, but it doesn't fit the title anymore.

As someone mentioned above, this is just a game after all folks - this is really well written and a refreshing take on things.

I'm not really sure what some people expect.

He's the best player in the world, he could write his Christmas list down and I'd be taking notes. Let him write what he wants, I'll certainly be looking forward to reading it.

He is a very intelligent and enjoyable writer so let this particular horse run free for a few gameweeks as we collect stats on his performances.

I agree with your last point Mark - TMWK did stray into The Digests' Digest at times. This way, it keeps the new perspective and keeps the content fresh. I like it.

Always one of favorite pieces on site, Peter doing great job, only thing preferred was clustering into smaller headed sections than large chunks but still great either way

I like it as is. Last year the Knnejerk, Digest and This Much We Know tended to be almost exactly the same. Don't think there is any need to follow a format that will probably lead to repetition again.

It is excellent stuff to have the no 1 ranked FPL player writing for FFS. It is an insight we all harbour for.

Peter needs to home in a little more on the key players he is looking at. Back up with evidence.

People identify with labels so change the TMWK title to "Peter Says..."

BIG fan of the new format thanks Mark, and also like the idea of using Hot Topics to garner opinion. Peter's writing style is free flowing and very engaging and probably the most interesting read of the week from my perspective, especially when he's discussing an FPL topic which relates to my team/decision making.

Really great change as far as I'm concerned!

        My team is:

        De Gea, Foster
        Kompany, Alonso, Stephens, Rosenoir, Francis
De Bruyne, Salah, Tadic, Carroll, Matic
        Lukaku, Jesus, Rodriguez

        A) Drop Jesus and Matic for Chicarito and Pogba/Mkhi for -4

        B) Drop KDB for Eriksen for free

        C) Something else? Do nothing?
