The Knee Jerk – Gameweek 3 – Sunday

This was meant to be the day that would see talent from the north London clubs cause tremors in the Fantasy Premier League ranks and market place. Instead, both Spurs and Arsenal fell flat – to varying degrees of disaster.

Harry Kane had the opportunity to transform the Fantasy Football landscape. Not only could he have buried the August goal hoodoo, but he could also have delivered points for the 16.1% who captained him to capitalise on the failings of others – including Romelu Lukaku’s zero point score.

Once again he blanked. Once again the numbers he produced defied belief.

Kane had ten attempts on goal, seven from inside the box. For the second match running, he has surpassed his personal record for the number of shots in a single Premier League match without scoring.

This season Kane has fired just 25% of his efforts on target with a zero conversion rate. His rates for both in 2016/17 were 52% and 26% respectively.

According to certain statistical models, he should have 2.5 goals by now. But he hasn’t. He’s got nothing, and he’s being ushered out of FPL squads at a pace.

To compound matters, both Chelsea’s Alvaro Morata and Roberto Firmino of Liverpool provided goal and assist returns with maximum bonus to overtake Lukaku in the forward standings.

They provide an obvious exit route for those left feeling decidedly uneasy about Kane’s extraordinary three-match drought.

Dismissing talk of the August “curse”, there is perhaps another reason behind this sorry spell: maybe Spurs really are destined to struggle at Wembley.

We have just two “home” matches to go on – the first against the champions Chelsea, while it should also be noted that Spurs only edged out Burnley 2-1 at White Hart Lane last season.

However, there is building momentum behind the theory that Mauricio Pochettino’s men could lack intensity and that sides will raise their game on visiting Wembley.

With Swansea City and Bournemouth the next two opponents due to arrive, we will surely have more evidence soon. Falter against that pair, and our confidence in Kane and Spurs’ other key assets – Christian Eriksen and Dele Alli – will plummet.

While it’s a testing trip to Everton to come next, those forthcoming home fixtures, coupled with the unfeasible and record-breaking numbers – may convince many Kane owners to sit on their hands, even when faced with cheaper and more profitable temptations.

Spurs toiled, but their suffering pales in significance next to the cataclysmic display delivered by Arsenal at Anfield.

Like Kane, Alexis Sanchez had the opportunity to put Fantasy managers in a spin. Instead, he played a 60-minute role in a farcical Gunners performance which may actually transpire to be his last for the club.

It remains to be seen if Sanchez stays in the Premier League to be a factor in our season. For now, he played his part in making Liverpool’s attacking assets seem irresistible, as the aforementioned Firmino pulled the strings for both Sadio Mane and Mo Salah to step up with further hauls.

It appears that there is still one thing we can all rely on as Fantasy managers: Liverpool will present us with the dilemma of putting many attacking eggs in a single basket.

With Kane – our most bankable scorer currently defying all odds to misfire – perhaps we should just embrace that “problem”.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I'm currently monitoring Femenia. Back-to-back CS. 2 straight games with 2 bonus points. 3 good fixtures in the next 5. Janmaat coming back and replacing him might be the only worry, but Silva might keep running with him.

I like them both - prefer Fabregas - but both might be slight to medium rotation risks. What if you did Kane to Morata and Richarlison/Chalobah to Eriksen if funding allows?

I would definitely back Morata/Eriksen to outscore Kane/Chalobah or Richarlison.

What to do with my team. Tempted to shift Aguero to either Firmino or Morata. Or maybe activate the wildcard. If I do that I might temporarily shift Kane and bring him back just before the GW4 deadline.

I had the same question yesterday. I was dropping KDB before the price fall, and was deciding between Pogba and Mkhi. I ended up going with Pogba. In the first half of United's match on Saturday he looked awesome. He is very attacking and he will play more full 90 minute matches than Mkhi.

I have Mkhitaryan and for some reason I have an aversion to Pogba. But in all honesty I'd probably back Pogba more right now, especially if he takes over penalties from Lukaku.

    Stephens Danilo Davies (Mee, Hunemeier)
Tadic De Bruyne Willian Ritchie (Carroll)
    Lukaku Kane Firmino

At first glance, what would you do here? Especially in midfield...

      Willian, Danilo and KDB out

Mkhi, D. Silva and a Man Utd def in.

City have nice fixtures and somebody will be assisting their goal scorers. So far Silva looks the most likely option and is fantastic for price in my opinion.

plays as Mid but playing Upfront. is he somewhat nailed to play 90 min always? last 2 ganes he played 90 min 1st game 18 min

does he have too much risk with Berahino and Diouf?

Due to the risk involved I can never advise someone to take a -12 because it can go either way and to a very extreme extent. I took a -12 to do PVA, Zaha, Jesus and Gabbi to lowe, Mkhi, (K)aku, Mounie, paid off but let's say it's a low scoring week, my word... The rank drop... Look at those moves individually, do you think each one is worth it. Jesus looks good, Mounie has good attributes and has WHU next, kola could get a game at wing back after the joke Ars served up yesterday. Just stones is pressing.

You are right, but I took a risk, and it's first time I paid -12, but last season, which was also my first, I made a lot of hits and a lot of them didn't work out but I got a nice TV and it used me well later in the season and managed to finish just outside 2k. And my plan was just Stones for free, but prices are rising up and falling down so I couldn't afford it later. I know it wasn't smart, just hope it will pay of, and if something happens, will activate WC to avoid further hits. Still not proud about this tonight though.

benitez was claiming lejeune had a strong chance of playing, then didnt even appear on the bench
Original schedule would have him playing after international break

Yep, obviously not 100% but original point was the claim that Mbemba was a must which seems.....hmmm, duff advice, maybe.

A must for what 2 or 3 games with no obvious swap to at 4m.
I get it, but just so short term when there are much bigger fish to fry at the beginning of a season.
An enabler but a bit risky, it's more to do with the advice that's getting chucked about this place.

as an owner of lukaku and pogba, if he loses penalties to pogba, i may drop lukaku for morata or jesus and bank the money go triple with manu mhiki pogba + defender

I'd agree with that, Lukaku not on pens dents his appeal somewhat. For that price I need him to get them (and score them).

He's missed 3 of his last 5, and has looked very unconvincing taking them. As an owner I'd rather Pogba gets them.
