The Community Round-Up

Wildcard fever has taken grip of the community over the past week. While some are currently brandishing the chip in anticipation of a boost in value and points, others are clinging to it and are all too happy to rain on their parade.

Our community discussions also took in transfer deadline day antics, the search for value in midfield and whether Harry Kane will ever find the net.

The Spurs striker’s underlying figures came under scrutiny in our Members’ tables summary, and we finish off our round-up with a look at those who have no need to Wildcard from their vantage point at the top of our community leagues.

The Community Articles

Today saw the launch of our latest community writer of the month vote, where we ask you to name your favourite scribe during August. The winner of your vote will receive a £20 Amazon voucher.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got some analysis, scout reports or features brewing, be sure to visit our community section to submit your article.

The Hottest Topic

Mark’s decision to activate his Wildcard sparked a flurry of discussions over the optimum time to use this valuable chip and which players to target.

The timing of his move, during the first international break, received a mixed response from the community and even shock from one of our fold.

Some who had endured a tough Gameweek – as detailed in our latest rough with the smooth Hot Topic – were among those who felt the time was right to wipe the slate clean with their team.

But Mlexer believes Wildcarding this early can be fraught with problems, with price rises stalling and too many issues still left unresvolved around team selection, rotation and form.

Your Mum’s Athletic has also noticed a slow down in the FPL transfer market and is pessimistic that the sort of dramatic valuation changes seen in 2016/17 will be replicated over the new season.

The transfer window is a key issue to take into account over the coming weeks. Dreams dropped by ahead of yesterday’s deadline to canvass the community’s views on the ideal moves they would like to see take place. As transfer deals unfolded Andre94PT gave us a detailed scouting report on Swansea’s new loan signing Renato Sanches.

But during the morning after the night before the community began to realise that the deals which failed to materialise could prove to be the most significant, with Pirlo’s Pen particularly jubilant about Marcos Alonso’s starting prospects following Chelsea’s failure to capture another left wing-back.

Another issue for Wildcarders to ponder is whether Harry Kane can live up to his 12.5 price tag, considering he has yet to score this season, despite breaking goal attempt records. Dino believes poor quality shooting is the reason behind his failure to find the net, while Poodle thinks the Spurs forward is lacking confidence.

Chris White added to the debate to highlight how the England striker is at the centre of a ‘casuals versus veterans’ battle due to his poor returns from such stunning underlying statistics.

Champions League rotation and Swansea City’s line-up are among other outstanding issues highlighted where more evidence may be required before Wildcarding, according to our discussion.

The community is far more certain about the ability of Liverpool’s Roberto Firmino to offer value following his reclassification from midfielder to forward over the summer. A19 asked for your views on how he can be best used – as part of a premium packed forward line, or as a replacement for a heavy hitter such as Kane?

Red Lightning is among those pondering whether an expensive three-man frontline can offer genuine value for money.

The fate of Kevin De Bruyne appears to be another certainty after adopting a deep midfield role and failing to produce points for his hefty fee. FC5750HC delivered the news that even the Belgian himself admits that he is now a defensive midfielder – a change of role that has already prompted 156,000+ FPL managers to part company with him this week and force his price to dip to 9.9.

There were further defensive problems and solutions provided in our discussion on the favoured backlines, while Jac the Cat asked for views on the best budget midfield options.

Value was also on the mind of Marcus, who has been highlighting some strong Fantasy options to suffer a price loss.

To view all our discussions please visit our Hot Topics page.

The Members’ Tables

Ambergambler has taken a look at the most successful set-piece takers, with some additional useful statistics thrown in recgarding crossing.

Elsewhere, G-whizz has been examining the underlying statistics of strikers, with a certain Spurs forward producing some particularly eye-catching underlying numbers.

If you’re a member and are yet to get to grips with the custom statistics tables, you can view this movie for an explanation of how they work. Also, remember to tag them so that people can find the tables with ease.

The Community Tournaments

In the FFScout Moderators and Contributors league Greenwindmill has taken top spot off Evs. Meanwhile, in the Moderators and Contributors FPL Draft league, I remain top after victory over Az, but face a stern test in Gameweek 4 when I take on our resident draft expert, second placed Andy.

QPRUTD is top of his own FFS Frequent Summers Posters league with a score of 197 after the first three Gameweeks. He is hotly pursued by Jallegre in second on 192.

Meanwhile, the Elite64 “who’s who of Fantasy Football” league has a new leader, with Don Tierney snatching top spot.

Dave Hughes has taken the lead in both Red Lightning’s Top 10k Any Season mini-league and PDM’s Top 1,000 Any Season contest. With a rank of 2,981, he looks on course to notch his third top 300 finish across his 12-season FPL career

In TorresMagic‘s Last Man Standing competition, Shaps hit the top score in Gameweek 3 with 86. There are over 3,700 teams left after 235 were eliminated when the safety score was set at 32.

If you are running a community tournament and would like the latest scores included in future Community Round-ups, please email us summary of the current leaders and a link to your league, spreadsheet or head to head competition, at jonty@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk.

So after all that, Newcastle didn't sign a new GK. Benitez is a muppet for demoralising his GKs without reason.

The stance from the club will mean nothing if he doesnt
play.it might initially show we wont be bullied by barca
but unless he is on the pitch contributing its all been for nowt.if he is fit, which he clearly is,then id expect him in squad for city game.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    What to do with Kane?

Has Kane’s brace against minnows Malta altered your thinking about the Tottenham striker?

Had the August hoo-doo become a self fulfilling prophesy, with September set for goals?

Or will he continue to struggle to find the net, despite breaking underlying stats records over the first three Gameweeks?

If wildcarding are you now keeping/getting him in, or at least have a plan to get him in for Swansea (at home in GWK 5)? Have your plans to spread the Kane cash gone out the window, given a price drop now looks unlikely.

If you ditched him recently are you getting him in?

And are those that shunned him in August but planning to get him in GWK 4 or 5 the real winners of the start of this season?

I think at this stage it's a don't sell and don't buy case (unless on a WC)

I'm strongly considering to stick the armband on him. This decision has nothing to do with August thing or scoring a brace vs Malta. It's purely down to his FPL track record, his stats last 3 games.

I also think people will avoid to buy or captain him now. Which gives an opportunity as he is ridiculously explosive player.

He was very poor first half last night but didn't really put a foot wrong in the second. I'm not sure his form/confidence was a problem for the first three games, he was simply unlucky not to score - was a good option last week and will be next week - but he still may blank.

Absolutely - it's just a case of when and whether the 12.5 is going to prove better value than other strikers. With the fixtures the way they are he looks a must-have from GW5 onwards to me.

My plan from the start was to ignore him for the first 2 GWs and get him in GW3 vs Burnley. Even though he failed to get any points the stats show that he is imminent. I risked enough by not having Kane (had Kun) in the first 2 GWs.

He is going nowhere and trying to get funds to get Alli as well.

I have him, only captained once so escaped a hattrick of armband failures but am definitely keeping and definitely looking to captain him in GWK 5, and maybe even GWK 4.

Looking back with hindsight it has to be said that those who went without for August and plan to get him in for September have played a blinder. The early part of the season belongs to them.

But August is now over and the time has come for Fantasy managers to enjoy his goals....and Eriksen's assists too. 🙂

Needless to say I'll be keeping him in Sky too,

I disagree on those that left him out for August. That decision could surely not have been based on anything other than hope or superstition. Thinking like that has indeed worked in Kane's case but it is not a long term strategy. Ignoring Kane's stats because "it's August" is a sign of a player that will continue to ignore stats throughout the season for inexplicable reasons and, whilst they won the battle, they will not win the war. Long term such an approach will not yield points.

While I'm sure many did leave him out solely due to superstition, I think many more people who left him out (myself included) looked at a combination of a high price, a fairly average pre season, no transfers of any note to reinvigorate the team, a new stadium (which they underperformed in last year in the CL) and potentially difficult fixtures (newly promoted side away in their first game + Chelsea and Burnley at home isn't that great), combined with the 'August hoodoo' and just thought it worth waiting. Now with the great stats, and an easier run of fixtures I feel much more confident about spending the 12.5, and even dropping Kaku to get him in for GW5.

It isn't though. Statistically he hasn't started slowly. He's hit the post twice nevermind the silly number of shots. Expected goals has him at over 2, adjusted for his conversion rate he's on 4+ if i remember correctly. That's not starting slowly, that's luck. Or black magic.

Whilst i don't disagree with that, it's very easy to select evidence that proves a hypothesis after the fact. If he had scored a hattrick against Chelsea people would be sighting his performance against Juve at Wembley instead.

I don't deny that in hindsight avoiding Kane in the first three has turned out well, but it was not a masterstroke, it was a gamble that, according to the statistics, came off in rather fortunate fashion.

Have they really played a blinder though?

Most teams I've seen that went without Kane went on Jesus or Aguero (and captained Aguero when he was benched) not sure either of those punished Kane owners.

I think its more a case of non Kane owners gambled and escaped, Kane owners were unlucky as he had enough shots to justify the decision to get him in from the start.

For the balance I wanted in my team, it was a choice of Kane OR Lukaku, both was not an option, so it definitely payed off for me. True though re: Jesus and aguero, though both have had one good gw a piece.

If you're on a WC you could have him very cheap by GW5 if the following things happen:

      1. Kane drops in price this week
      2. Morata rises in price one more time this week
      3. Lacazette scores well v Bournemouth (even better if he rises/double rises afterwards)
      4. Kane blanks v Everton & drops 0.1 again for GW5

That's 0.1 in selling value from having Morata this week, 0.2 drop from Kane this week/next week & differential captain points for Lacazette v Bournemouth, with possibly another 0.1 of Lacazette double rises afterwards.

It's not high risk either, as if the opposite happens & Lacazette blanks on Saturday/Kane does well at Everton on Sunday, there is a day to react & get Kane in using FT before he starts to rise. Just need to set aside enough ITB to do Lacazette to Kane for FT 🙂

Sounds like a lot of effort and the use of a vital wildcard just to make 0.1 - or at an outside bet 0.2 - on your team value.

Surely better just to keep him, and the wildcard and sit back and enjoy September with a good captain choice?

I've looked at the rest days between European fixtures and I think there's a very good chance his minutes will be managed in GW5 v Swansea.

Kane/Spurs plays Dortmund (a physical team) 3 days before Swansea (who have 7 days rest).
Lukaku/United play Basel (an easier tie) 5 days before they play Everton (who play Atlanta away, tough, and will have only 3 days to recover).

I think people are looking past the physical demands of 3 games in a week, especially when you now have a viable option in Llorente to rotate with.

Would it be a surprise if both Alli (suspended in CL) and Llorente both come in for GW5 to give Spurs fresh legs (with Kane being used from the bench?). I think it's a real possibility.

If Morata rises in price twice and Kane drops, no one will swap because one will be in form and the other not.

Pointless using this as a comforting reason because no one will follow through with it.

Don't let sentiment rule. Keep him. Every season, people always talk about how if they'd just captained Kane every week, or Sanchez every week, they'd have done better than to keep switching the armband around. No reason why that won't happen again. You've been unlucky so far, but you've played it fine, and should continue.

He went three games without a goal in two occasions last season, but never four.

The first run of blanks was GW1-3 - he then scored five in his next four. The second run was GW15-17 (blanking at home to Hull and Burnley) - he then scored six in his next four.

My main worry was the price drop. If he had fallen by 0.3 as predicted then it may have made sense to play the WC and bring in Morata for a potential 0.5 swing. However it hasn't panned out like that as Morata has only gone up 0.1 and Kane hasn't dropped.

So I am happy to stick by him now as the stats suggest that he will score soon.

He was set in my team as a season keeper and I still think he could be.

Last year was my first fpl season and I played quite aggresively on transfers and price changes, built high TV and had OK season all in all, but sometimes went too crazy for team value, selling those who were dropping in price too prematurely and then suffered from their hauls.

This year I try to play differently, have more faith in top class players and dont bother about rises/drops that much.

So keeping Kane for sure. 🙂

At 12.5mn, its fair to say that with proper planning he can more than be covered with other quality players even if he scores braces every week which looks unlikely with Spurs this season...With their wembley stuggles worse than away matches I have a feeling they may even miss out on top 4...Will bring in Eriksen to cover from GW 5 though

Apart from the spell right at the end of last season where he got a shed load, he could have been covered at some periods of the season by Eric Ali Vardy Costa Mane Coutinho Hazard etc. All those players were no more 10m at the start. The problem is when he get 7 goals in 3 games and you're not there to captain him

Wish I'd not got him from the start, obviously, but definitely keeping now.

He hasn't dropped so when everyone who's dropped him gets him back, it'll be with mostly normal transfers not WC so his price might go up a fair bit.

That's an interesting point. A lot are on WC and you would assume dropping Kane. If he scores against Everton you would assume people may panic and bring him back for Swansea game. Which may cause a larger upturn in his price

        2. Pasqualinho
          • 14 Years
          6 years, 7 months ago

He'll need 200k transfers just to get him back to level pegging, then another 70k (ish) for his first price rise. If it's value you're after then a drop and 3 rises may take the same amount of transfers in as reversing his negative transfer stats and then getting enough in for a single rise. So not really worth worrying about if he does price drop - in fact it may be preferable if he does.

Yeah? I'm not too worried either way. I'm not too concerned with trying to predict players' rises and falls tbh. Not enough for it to affect my transfer plans anyway. Just thought it might be a nice little bonus for holding on to him.

LOVE IT when a player has great stats but doesn't come good. Carlton Palmer

It's all very well Kane getting of loads of touches, shots and getting laid on chances etc but if he's a massive dosile potato for 4 weeks at the start of each season then there's a problem. Quote all the stats you like as he fails to quite make contact, scuffs the ball into the keepers arms on onto the post - it wont make a difference. There's a problem which is not picked up by the stats because stats are just a quantitative simulation, a simplification of complex qualitative situation. They do not tell the whole story. In other words, people who ignored him in August potentially didn't just 'get lucky', they recognised a phenomena which is not recognised by the stats. Jonty may be right, maybe they did play a blinder

didn't pick him to start with. fixtures, price & still not sure on this Wembley business. Still wasn't sure how much last 2 games of last season effected his worth (not value) over other cheaper premium strikers over a longer period of fixtures.
It was still 12.5m out of a 100m available.
Went for Lukaku, Jesus & Firmino - thinking on the 1st 2 it was not a big reach to change one to Kane if necessary.
Was always planning on a later WC so would have more funds to work with and even a small increase in Kane price wouldn't hurt so much. 12.6m even out of a 101m squad value is still easier on the rest of the squad.

Had him from the start, captained once. (c) again this week and no wildcard yet. Team doesn't need it! Next international break maybe or if possible pre Christmas. Ppl flip flipping Kane in and out of their teams are either wasting transfers or wasting wildcard in my opinion. Mark possibly good example! Newly transferred players need to be assessed for a few weeks in their new team, so wildcard now doesn't help that. Eg the Ox. Hegazi vs McAuley needs to be assessed. Morata we need more data.

I have him since GW1 and there is no point in selling him now, at this point, when his goals are imminent. As simple as that. But as Jonty has said, those who will get him now (let me add, without a hit) have done better than us, that is true.

I started without Kane for the reason I stated before the season. He's a slow starter and I justified it for those reasons. I started last season with him in my GW1 side and regretted it, not because I was unlucky but because I had been silly enough to disregard the previous season where he started slowly. On top of his slow starts there other compelling reasons. A very high price, Wembley factor and Spurs not making any acquisitions. It's not luck or superstition or hindsight or any of that nonsense. If you make a decision, back it up and then get proven correct, it's strange old world that you get criticised for it. I'd also add, many people who started with Kane were obliged to pair him with KDB because they needed City coverage, rather than the superior coverage of Aguero or Jesus.

As it happens, whilst Jonty is being generous with praise I'm not really a winner because I made the wrong captaincy choices. But that's another story.

Looking at the fixtures, I'd want to cap him every week from 5 to 8. For this reason, I'm keeping. I am someone who hit the WC button and regretted doing so, especially after missing the rises of Firmino and Alonso, but Kane is staying through the wildcard.

Was to much of a risk to go without at start of season.

Won't be leaving my team anytime soon with great fixtures coming up.

I got him in for GWK3 (Burnley H) and captained. I have zero intention of selling, he's proven top quality goal scorer over the last 2 seasons, spurs have great fixtures, his underlying stats are insane - 2 goals against Malta did not change anything except make the recreational players more likely to hold.

After the media reported that Alexis had told his Chilean team-mates that he was moving to Manchester City (without any quotes), Arturo Vidal has come out and said that it was completely false and that he was focused on the night's game.

      The media just reports anything.

I'm pretty happy with my WC team. My main worries are not owning: Salah, Morata, Alonso, Firmino - but you can't have them all, and I would have been more worried about not owning Kaku, Kane, Mane, Alli

I've gone for flexibility across the squad. Daniels and Mee rotate really nicely.

      Fabianski, Elliot
      Cedric, Jones, Daniels, Mee, Naughton
      Alli, Mane, Mkhitarian, Brady, Atsu
      Kane, Lukaku, Abraham

      Anything you don't like?

Not at all. Activity will be very slow until Wednesday or Thursday midweek. Also a lot of people on wild cards and that doesn't affect player prices.

Not pulled trigger on WC yet, 0 FT sat at 1.4m rank and getting left behind...

      Old team:

      Forster / Elliott
      Hegazi / Mee / Stephens / Davies / Rosenoir
      Mkhi / Mane / Willian / Matic / Carroll
      Lukaku / Kane / Gabbiadini

      Possible New team:

      Forster / Elliott
      Hegazi / Naughton / Alonso / Davies / Mbemba
      Mkhi / Pogba / Salah / Alli / Carroll
      Lukaku / Firminho / Abraham

      1. Is it worth WC'ing or am I being daft? I'd probably look to swap luk>kane next week if needed

Swings and round abouts on that.. but A) shades it for me, mainly due to Alonso

        A) Alonso vs lei/ARS - good chance of assist or clean sheet on both, Carroll vs NEW/spurs, so 1 good and 1 likely thumping.
        B) Kola vs BOU/cfc - i dont think they'll keep a clean sheet for either. Richarlison vs sou/MANC, wouldnt be suprised at a 0-0 but City will likely win it convincingly.

I'm not a fan of Kola and can't see Arsenal clean sheets for a while yet until they settle better, but Swansea fixtures are great and barring the United 4-0 slap down, they've looked good in the other two gamews, so Kola > Naughton looks good. Willian to Salah could wait until next week maybe so you dont take the -4, unless you expect Salah to be out of this world vs City.

cheers for the reply. The price change of Salah will likely price me out of that move and Salah was actually the one I was mote interested in on the move as a long term replacmenet for Willian

Depends if you think Liverpool will slap City and to be fair, they really could - they've always done well versus them and I think they are a better side at the moment, so yes could miss out if it's a high scoring game and Salah is involved.

      Next 5 fixtures:
Lukaku: 2 Home 3 Away (stk, EVE, sou, CRY, liv)
Lacazette: 3 Home 2 away (BOU, che, WBA, BRI, wat)

I really think Laca can score more than Lukaku here, but that 60% ownership might ruin me..

It's not just about Home and Away. It's also about who they're facing Home and Away.

Also, Lukaku is the better striker playing for the better team. So it's not that simple.
