Scout Notes

International Scout Notes – Monday

Marcus Rashford grabs a goal and assist as England come from behind to see off Slovakia. West Brom assets get among the goals for Northern Ireland, while Christian Eriksen turns in another fine Denmark performance as some fingers point accusingly at his Spurs colleague Dele Alli…

Rashford role remains inconclusive

Fans and pundits alike often bemoan a player’s inability to replicate their club form when on international duty.

It seems to be entirely the opposite when it comes to Marcus Rashford, however.

The striker has been in and out of the Manchester United and England sides this season, producing the goods for both while yet to nail down a starting place in either.

He was involved in all three goals against Slovakia, caught in possession for the visitors’ opener, swinging over the corner from which Eric Dier equalised and then hitting a superb long-range winner after the break from a Jordan Henderson pass.

He’s also scored 13 FPL points from a goal and an assist for United, but had to come from the bench for his strike against Leicester City in Gameweek 3.

And therein lies the problem – Rashford can’t be entirely trusted for enough starts to make selecting him in our squads ahead of his team-mate Romelu Lukaku a decision worth making. Not with rival Anthony Martial (two goals, one assist) offering fierce competition for the role on the left.

He certainly brings home the bacon among strikers in the mid-priced bracket. Only Javier Hernandez (7.1) has more points than the 7.5-priced Rashford, the Mexican winning that duel 16-13.

United’s excellent early schedule continues for the next four Gameweeks, with trips to Stoke City and Southampton and visits from Everton and Crystal Palace.

Rashford will no doubt be involved in much of those matches, as he has been in the Red Devils’ first three – his nine attempts from just 178 minutes of pitch-time is bettered only by Lukaku and Harry Kane up front.

Whether that’s enough to promote further investment in the 5.4%-owned asset remains doubtful.

He has the form and fixtures to be a major differential, but only if he is given the time to prove it.

Baggies’ pair in the goals

West Brom’s Jonny Evans continued his return from injury by netting the opening goal in Northern Ireland’s impressive 2-0 home win over the Czech Republic.

The centre-half experienced a singular summer of hamstring issues and big money bids from Manchester City, among others. But he played 90 minutes against San Marino on Friday and did the same last night as he steps up his match fitness ahead of Gameweek 4.

Evans’ return to fitness could now be ominous for Allan Nyom in the Baggies’ back-four.

The versatile Craig Dawson has partnered Ahmed Hegazi in at centre-half for Tony Pulis’ side until this point, but the former is expected to return to his usual right-back berth, placing Nyom’s security of starts in doubt.

Nyom could also be moved to the left-back berth, though, which could see Chris Brunt, who also scored for Northern Ireland last night, switched into a midfield berth out wide. Yet there’s strong competition on the left of defence, too, in light of the arrival of Kieran Gibbs from Arsenal.

Hegazi is currently the most signed FPL asset since Gameweek 1 with over 926,000 transfers in. The Egyptian could be a scapegoat following his error for Stoke City’s goal in Gameweek 3 but, having impressed to that point, he would seem secure for now.

But Gareth McAuley can put more pressure on that situation and local press reports today indicated that he has now returned to training ahead of the weekend trip to Brighton.

West Brom managed a measly seven clean sheets last year, but have started this season with two in three matches.

And they have a decent enough schedule all the way through to the year’s final international break in early November, with a trip to Arsenal and a visit from Man City the biggest tests ahead.

Christian leaves digital Dele in the lurch

We spent most of last season trying to choose between Spurs midfielders Christian Eriksen and Dele Alli.

It’s been the same at the start of this campaign, but if our decision was entirely down to how they’ve come through the September international break, the Dane wins it hands down.

Eriksen, owned by 21.8%, followed up a goal and two assists in Friday’s 4-0 win over Poland with a superb set-piece strike and another assist as Denmark brushed aside Armenia 4-1 last night, Man United’s Henrikh Mkhitaryan playing the full 90 minutes for the hosts.

Alli, meanwhile, had to make do with a single assist in the 4-0 win in Malta before grabbing the attention in the 2-1 victory over Slovakia more for his one-finger gesture – supposedly directed at former team-mate Kyle Walker – than anything he did with his feet.

The England man (9.5) is owned by a chunky 34.9% and comes in at 0.1 cheaper than Eriksen, who is currently outscoring Alli by three points, courtesy of three assists and five bonus compared to two goals and two bonus.

A tricky trip to Everton awaits Spurs this weekend, but after that, they’ll host Swansea City and Bournemouth and travel to West Ham and Huddersfield before things turn nasty from Gameweek 9.

Should the authorities feel the need to punish Alli for his digital indiscretion, any potential ban would apply to international matches only.

That would be ironic given that Alli is already suspended from Champions League action and Spurs’ first three ties.

That actually improves his stock as a Fantasy asset, with Alli unlikely to lose minutes around European ties. Eriksen, meanwhile, may be sacrificed for the final minutes of matches around those encounters, with fatigue from the midweek fixtures more of a factor.

Elsewhere…

Arsenal’s Mesut Ozil produced a goal and an assist for Germany in a 6-0 destruction of Norway in which new Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger played the full 90 minutes.

West Brom midfielder James Morrison grabbed an assist for Scotland as they overcame Malta 2-0, while Burnley striker Chris Wood was rested as New Zealand completed an 8-3 aggregate win over the Solomon Islands which puts the All Whites into an intercontinental play-off for a place at Russia 2018.

Wood was allowed to return to his new club early having scored a hat-trick in the first leg.

Had him in a few drafts pre-season alongside Kaku. Amazing value at 7.5 even if coming off the bench a few times.

Rashford is looking increasingly tempting. With the upcoming tight schedule rotation will be rife at all clubs. Would rather have a 7.5m asset from a top side who will be rotated than a 9m+ player who gets rotated.

Jesus, Lacazette, Salah, Mané all looking vunerable. A couple of European wins for spurs and suddenly their assets won't be so safe. Even Lukaku might be prone when Zlat is back.

Batshuayi could mean Morata is rotated on occasion. Remember Chelsea had less games last year. Even Costa could become threatening in 3 to 4 weeks (stranger things have happened)

    Thoughts on this WC team?

    Fabianski (Elliot)
Alonso - Davies - Cedric - Naughton (Mee)
Alli - Salah - Pogba - Brady (Carroll)
    Kane - Firmino (Abraham)

    1.6 ITB

    could possibly do this

Jones, Mbemba, Chalobah & Lukaku instead of Alonso, Davies, Brady & Tammy but will have to change formations to a 4-3-3

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Live Scoutcast tonight at 9:30pm - leave your questions for the team here.

Tonight's will be slightly different. Mark has telephone line problems so won't be able to join us to discuss his wildcard. He's promised to send us his latest draft though for us to deliver our views on.

Andy will attempt to take over the Mark intro bits and all being well will give me ample chance to discuss my goals imminent table 😉

Tonight's line up is Andy, Az, Disable and myself.

      1) With lathargic and anemic price rises and with uncertainty about how teams will line up now the transfer window has closed, have GW3 wildcarders made a big tactical error?

      2) Will Kane's stats keep us warm at night? Or should we chow down on actual cold, hard points? Kane is producing record breaking stats but the majority of his attempts are blocked or off target. Is the case to downgrade him to Firmino and free up nearly £4m to spend elsewhere on your team just too irresistible?

      3) With so many budget defenders starting the season well, are we paying too much for our clean sheets?

      4) Can Pogba AND Mhki cover Lukaku?

      5) Is Sanchez staying at Arsenal and Coutinho staying at Liverpool good or bad for FPL managers?

      6) Klopp has a proven track record of rotation and Liverpool have many more midfielders and attackers than they can start. Is it foolish to think that Klopp won't rest the likes of Salah, Firmino and Mane?

      7) Now the transfer window has closed, which were the most significant transfers for FPL managers?

      8) If you have 4 things wrong with your team (for example, KDB, Kane, Dann and Fraser are all losing owners), would it not be better to use a free transfer and a hit across two Gameweeks to fix your 4 problems ... Rather than using a precious Wildcard?

      9) With all the hysteria of needless wildcards and deadline day transfers, have we lost track of the basics? Which players have form and fixtures on their side and should be brought into our teams?

I'm not trying to be rude here but don't you think this is a bit over the top? Every time Jonty asks for questions for the scoutscast, you submit at least 8 every week.

This is a FantasyFootballScout community and not the FPL Virgin show. The whole point is to gather questions from the whole community and not just one person. Your questions maybe valid but it still defeats the purpose of the community.

Furthermore you're obsession with the scoutscast members makes me slightly worried.

As someone who often asks a few questions myself I feel obliged to point out that they don't necessarily answer all of the questions that Mr. Virgin asks. I don't know how the preparation for the scoutcast works but I imagine Jonty & Co. look at this thread and pick out what they perceive to be the most pertinent questions. If FPLV has asked one or two of those- great, he gets a couple of questions answered (as do we all as they are not specifically for him), if not I imagine they discount his and move onto the next questions. There's no need to attack the poor guy's integrity, he often seems to capture the mood of the community anyway.

          1. FantasyFootballSprout

Yes I imagine that's how they do it and obviously some people are more enthusiastic than others when it comes to FPL. However, I think the more questions you ask, the more chance you've got to get featured on the Scoutscast which in my eyes, reeks of desperation.

It's not fair that one person should submit all of the questions for the FPL community, otherwise what's the point of asking the community in the first place. FPLV clearly covered all major questions with his post and that doesn't give anyone else a chance to ask that question. It's all about attention IMO.

I also don't believe every one of those questions apply to FPLV so therefore he doesn't really care about the answer but more about his name being mentioned on the scoutscast.

I feel sorry for people in the community who genuinely want to ask that question as it applies to there team but then look silly as it has already been asked by someone who just wants some attention.

I maybe completely off on this but I get quite narked when I see things like this on the forum.

Like I said before it's a community and not the FPL Virgin show.

              • 11 Years

So your problem is that FPLV asks all the good questions?
Surely the content of the questions outweighs who asks them?
Also there's nothing to stop someone repeating a question thats already been posted in the HT, in fact if you put it more succinctly than the initial poster often you have a decent chance of it being read out. Often Jonty will quote multiple names if more than one person has asked a similar question.
I'm not disagreeing that most scoutcasts will have an FPlV namecheck- throw enough questions at a wall etc, but often it's only 1 of his Qs that gets picked anyway. Just seems to me theres no reason to go in two-footed on the guy when he's asking the questions that will get answered one way or another anyway.

No that's not my problem, rather just let some other people ask them rather than one person. I wouldn't mind if he asked 3 or even 4 but 8+ every week screams attention regardless of them being picked or not.

Judging by the number of upvotes my original comment got, I think a lot of people on the site agree with me.

Yes it is but that doesn't mean you can't be annoying even if you are asking about FPL. There's a line.

If I see something that looks out of place, I call it out. The only reason you're defending him in the first place is because you're guilty of the same thing, just not to FPL Virgins extreme level.

      2. With their failure to sign a striker are Brighton shaping up to be this season's Middlesbrough?
      3. Is captaining the striker of the team that is playing West Ham every week a viable tactic?

With the news of Clyne being out for another few months, is TAA going under the radar a bit? I haven't seen him in any wildcard teams.

If I was on wildcard he would be a shoe in. Possible rotation I know, but not bad having a 4.5 Liverpool defender on the bench now and again who takes corners and FK.

For me yes! But more importantly there should be consistency season to season and across the market. How can Kane sustain 300k TXO and not drop price. Ridiculous! I played my wc on premise that price changes wouldn't be as volatile as last year but would at least move. Is there a way of knowing what the rules of price changes is. It's bordering on spoiling the game for me.

Kola is worth keeping! No Ox means bellerin is going to right and kola is the only wing option because monreal is CB position now. Thats logic but there is also some thing called "Wengers logic" to put bellerin on left... I ll wait and see but belive kolasinac is left WB

He can only give his current reaction, which may have changed since he decided to press the button and may need to be revised again in 6-8 GWs time.

Many of us feel that it is better to save our wildcards until at least the second international break, by which time far more information should be available and a fixture swing closer for some players. The number of injuries that GW will probably be similar to this one, and there should be a greater number of price changes then because there should be fewer active wildcards.
If we are wrong about that then it may be us who have to revise our opinions, but at the moment I would think that the odds are probably in our favour.

SmartyPants showed that in 2015 over 10% played their wildcard in GW4.
This was over twice as many as in any other game-week that season apart from GW3 (7.6%).

No, but price changes should not be the main reason for playing your wildcard in my opinion.

The price change mechanism changes slightly each season, and FPL do not disclose exactly how it works, but there have been some indications that price changes appear to be slower this season than in 2016-17 when there were complaints from some that prices were too volatile.

Transfers made on wildcards do not now count towards price changes, so price changes may be slower than expected when many wildcards are active, especially for players being bought or sold mainly on wildcards.

Apart from transfers made on wildcards, the number of transfers made during an international break may be no greater than in other game-weeks and many of them may be delayed till near the end of the fortnight when players have reported back to their clubs and the clubs have had a chance to assess their fitness or tiredness.

Who do you think benefits from the international break? Who are the overperformers tha will be brought down to earth and who will have the chanceto regroup after a bad start?

Do you see Huddersfield maintaining their form or will they regress quickly after IB breaks the early momentum? And what about Bournemouth who have disappointed many?

Is Kane off-form? He looks like the Euro 2016 version to me.

And have defenders worked out how to stop his most effective weapon? They're denying him space for that instant turn and no-backlift shot from just inside/outside the box, which must account for a lot of his goals.

We need some decent discussion about basket wasting nonsense.

There is no coverage in attacking points. You get the players that score the most points regardless of team, regardless of doubling or covering or anything. Points on the board matters. Filling baskets from all the big teams absolutely does not.

With the price rises/falls much more stable, is the answer to Kane/Lukaku or both that we just need to pick the right time one to own at the right time?

Picking through both sets of fixtures between now and the New Year if you only have one but swap them depending on fixtures, on the FPL fixture difficulty scale you would have 18 fixtures which break down to - 16 green, 1 grey and 1 red.

That would simplify your captain choice. It would require 6 transfers, but would allow you to have (for argument sake) Firmino, Morata and whichever of Kane or Lukaku has the best fixtures.

Kane has 300000TXO since GW1 and drops £0.0. His strike partner Llorente has 3000 TXO and drops £0.1!

Where is the logic in the current FPL pricing strategy? Last years I felt compelled to gamble and act early to avoid price rises and losses for overall squad purchasing power. I played my WC this GW accordingly to find the market flat despite TXI TXO movement. It seems to be a lottery.

What is the current price rise/fall fpl policy and your current strategies to current movement?

Is the current pricing policy spoiling the game and lending towards template teams by limiting options? E.g. Only 2 players a gk n def priced £4.0 played all 3 games, only 6 Mids under £5.0 have played all 3 games 270mins. Rendering very limited budget options. At same time overpriced KdeB, Kane etc remain so with little or no price redress leading to a narrower selection of players and 'Template Teams'

Llorente started with an 8k ownership. He has been dropped by around 40% of his owners. Of course he's going to fall before Kane does.

Understandable. But for a higher priced player with increased ownership surely the algorhythm works on a logarithmic type scale and a 4% drop will have affect. Or is it possible then for ghost ship teams to inflate prices season long? Inconsistency season to season and apparent inconsistency across the market birder on spoiling the game for me.

This season with the abundance of heavy hitters and a lack of budget mids/forwards firing, should we may be jump on and off the big hitters and leave the budget options alone or is it better to hold on to the proven big hitters while using transfers on budget mids/fwds?

What do you guys think about the idea of going with just one premium striker and two cheapies out of Rodriguez, Tammy, Joselu, Vokes to free up change to make a really great midfield? Its pretty easy to get a midfield with 4 out of Mkhi/Pogba/Eriksen/Alli/Mane/Salah + Fabregas and still have a pretty good defense too.

      WBA and Swans defence :

With the arrival of Krychowiak and the return of Evans, WBA defense is probably going to get better and keep a fair few clean sheets. Swansea has been looking pretty solid, Fabianski racks up the save points, and if Clement is moving to 3-5-2, Naughton will play as wingback.

Looks like WBA and Swansea defensive coverage is fairly important. So go for :

      Foster and Naughton
      or
      Fabianski + Dawson (for 0.5 more) ?

Am I the last guy holding on to Josh King? and should I let go now, or see if he can snap out of it and add a nail to the ARS Coffin?
Loved him last season, and liked BOU team sheet pre-season, but either him>Firmino or Willian>Pogba this week?

Hi guys, just wondering what you think of either of these mid/striker combos:

    Alli Mane Mkhitaryan Richarlison Carroll
    Lukaku Morata Firmino

    OR

Should I switch Firmino for Kane and put in Brady for Alli? Just thinking Kane would give me an extra captaincy choice and he could fire soon.

Using my WC guys what do you think:

    Foster Elliot
Cedric* Kiko Femenia Zanka Naughton Mbemba
Caroll* Mane Richardlison Ali Loftus Cheek
    Lukaku Morata Lacazette* (1.9 ITB)

    1. Cedric--> 4.5 defender & Carroll --> Brady ?? Haven't seen much of brady
Lacazette a one week punt, getting Kane after.

Problem is he's played 1 of 3, and Joe Gomez has played well in the other two. Klopp said about his keepers that he wants them all to play because they're all playing well, not just to drop one if they play badly. Would imagine same applies here

    Toughts on Arsenal?
They got really good fixtures, 3 "easy" home games in the next 4.

I have problems finding value in attack, with Sanchez a big "?" and Wenger playing Welbeck at top.
    Can Ozil be a hit?
Will Ramsey strike back after a poor performance in Liverpool? (He was one of Arsenals best players the first 2 games).
    Lacazette, Giroud?

Im on Wildcard, and think I will go without Arsenal in attack, if I dont deside to try Ozil.

Shoud Bellerin be great value now that Ox are out of the team? He should nail down his favorite position at the right side? He would be a safe starter with both 4 and 3 at the back?

I would go for Kolasinac ahead of Bellerin if he was nailed, but whats ur toughts on the left back? Will Monreal take this spot with 4 at the back? Wenger seem to love Monreal.

Wild cards really are overrated. Just pick a team structure, and stick to it, and don't chase points. You'll fly up the ranks in no time

skipping from premium asset to premium asset. People who took out Salah for example after Palace, and for those who have taken out Lukaku this week
