The ScoutCast – Episode 232 – Feisty

“This is how the ScoutCast was meant to be” exclaimed Granville.

He’s not wrong. If you’ve successfully avoided this brand of nonsense to this point, episode 232 provides a less than gentle introduction.

Just don’t expect me to take a beating every week.

That’s certainly what pans out over this lengthy landmark episode which finds me rolling the punches after my “ill-timed” Wildcard.

Granville and Jonty take turns to dish out the blows, while Andy and Az make uncomfortable spectators.

Once the scuffle dies down, we do our best to address the latest community questions, assessing strikers, mid-price midfielders and the latest wing-backs demanding our attention.

But, for once, that forms the undercard for the “big fight”.

  1. Wingback Attack!

With wingbacks seemingly on the rise and with lots of cheap midfielders available but no clear options, is it time to fully give our attention to wingbacks? I’ve chosen to look at the only two players that played at wingback for the majority of the season, to see if I can make a prediction about how well wingbacks, who play for the top 6 sides (Chelsea, Arsenal, Tottenham, Manchester City, Manchester United and Liverpool), will perform this season, compared to those pesky cheap mids.

Last season over 32 games where Chelsea employed the 3-4-3 Alonso and Moses combined for 9 goals and 8 assists. That’s 4.5 goals and 4 assists for a Chelsea wingback. And yes, I do know that Alonso being on free kicks skews the data, however, wingbacks, as we’ve seen tonight with Kola and Bellerin, get in advanced positions and have the potential for lots of attacking returns. Alonso received 11 bonus points and Moses only received 6, because he was only classified as a midfielder and didn’t rack up clean sheet points. So, if he had, lets add another 5 bonus points to his tally to bring the total bonus points earned for Moses and Alonso over 32 games to 22, meaning a Chelsea wingback would’ve had 11 bonus points over 32 games. In that space of time Chelsea also recorded 75 goals and 15 clean sheets in those 32 games.

Because Chelsea scored 75 goals and recorded 15 clean sheets over 32 games, over 38 games, assuming they kept up their form and played a 3-4-3, they would’ve scored 89 times. It also boosts the tally of 4.5 goals, 4 assists, 11 bonus points and 15 clean sheets to 5.34 goals, 4.75 assists, 17.8 clean sheets and 13 bonus points. Including yellow cards, minutes played and a negative one for every two goals conceded, the math would look like this:

    34 (miss 4 games due to injury/rotation) x 2 = 68
    5.34 goals x 6 = 32 +
    4.75 assists x 3 = 14 +
    17.8 CS x 4 = 71 +
    13 bonus points +
    6 yellow cards x -1 = -6 +
    10 2+ goals conceded x -1 = -10

    = 182 POINTS FOR A CHELSEA WINGBACK.

Considering Alonso got 177 points last season, it is reasonable to assume that a Chelsea wingback last season, when playing all 38 games would’ve gotten around 190 points. But that’s a wingback for a Chelsea side who won the league last season. How would a wingback look for a top 6 side?

Well, looking at all of the averages that the top 6 got last year, we find that the average top 6 team scored 78 goals. Now, if we assume that the top 6 wingbacks would score and assist in the same ratio as the Chelsea wingbacks did compared to their hypothetical 89 goals, for 78 goals, an average top 6 wingback would score 4.68 goals and get 4.16 assists. And let’s say that an average top 6 wingback would also snag less bonus points, we’ll give them 11 bonus points. Also because their average defence was slightly worse, with 14.8 clean sheets, we will give them a -12 for conceding 2 or more goals. Add all that up and it looks like this:

    34 (miss 4 games due to injury/rotation) x 2 points = 68 +
    4.68 goals x 6 = 28 +
    4.16 assists x 3 = 12 +
    14.8 CS x 4 = 59 +
    11 bonus points +
    6 yellow cards x -1 = -6 +
    12 2+ goals conceded x -1 = -12

    = 160 POINTS FOR A TOP 6 WINGBACK

Now, in comparison here’s how some of the best performing midfielders in the $4.5-8m bracket who we all thought could go in our teams fared compared to an average theoretical output of a top 6 wingback:

    Sigurdsson - 181
    Joshua King - 178
    Son - 174
    Pedro - 162
AVERAGE TOP 6 WINGBACK THIS SEASON PREDICTED POINTS: 160 points
    Wijnaldum - 149
    Zaha – 149
    Barkley - 144
    Lallana - 139
    Milner – 139
    Lanzini – 133
    Antonio - 132
    Walcott - 122
    Fabregas - 121
    Arnautovic - 117
    Phillips – 115

As you can see, just like last season we looked at a lot of mid-priced midfielders, yet according to the data, only 3 really stood out: Sigurdsson, King and Son, whilst the others would be under the predicted average 160 for a top 6 wingback.

Now, in terms of attacking output, what would your mid priced midfielder need to get over 38 games to equal the average of 160 points? Well, assuming this math is true:

    34 appearances = 68 points +
    9 clean sheets = 9 points +
    6 yellow cards = -6 points +
    15 bonus points = 15 points

So far that’s 86 points, and you’d need your midfielder to get 74 points from goals/assists which could look like this:

    15 goals and 0 assists
    0 goals and 25 assists
    10 goals and 8 assists
    9 goals and 10 assists
    12 goals and 5 assists
    8 goals and 12 assists

You see because there are about 30 viable options for that mid-priced midfield spot, it is difficult to pick the right player. However, there are only 6 or so wing backs from top 6 teams that could get you around 160 points a season if you keep them in your team: Alonso, Zappa/Moses, Davies, Trippier/Aurier, Kolasinac and Bellerin. Because the choices are so obvious and the returns would be higher, why wouldn’t you splash out 6.5 million for a wing back from a top 6 team instead of a Stoke midfielder?

So, this season ask yourself when looking at all the players priced between 5-8m in that mid-range area, could they score 12 goals and 5 assists? Could Gross finish the season with 9 goals and 10 assists, could Ritchie finish the season with 8 goals and 12 assists? Could Choupo-Moting finish with 12 goals and 5 assists? Could Richarlison finish with 10 goals and 8 assists? Could [insert your mid-priced midfielder in here] finish with 11 goals and 7 assists? If you answered yes to any of those questions, you should, and will, keep searching for that Joshua King that will lift you above everyone else. If you answered no, then you might want to start investing in some wingbacks for the long term future.

P.S. If you disagree with my math, then I’m sorry you feel that way. I did a lot of my research over this past week and I’m fairly certain that the average score for a top 6 starting wingback will be 160 over the course of a season, give or take a few points. I hope I have provided useful information for you all to consider when making your teams this week. Thanks for reading. :

Haha, I compensated by making sure this would be the first post on the page ;). I have now convinced myself that I will go with wingbacks when I wildcard in a few weeks time. Right now I have zero but am very nervous of all of my opponents who have Davies, Kola and Alonso.

100% agree and being saying it without the stats to back it up for weeks!

433 formation just confirms this. Kola, Davies are a must and Alonso/Mendy if you can afford. Jones is so cheap he has to take up one spot though and you need a 4.0 5th mid to accommodate this.

The lack of mid priced striker options also forces a 433 with Firmino offering the best 3rd striker option.

The problem is choosing between which top 2 strikers to get. Morata/Kane? Kane/Lukaku? Kane/Jesus?

For me, wingbacks and 3 strikers is where it's at with the mids taking the least investment.

Mkhit and Eriksen/Alli are musts for mids, especially if you don't opt for Lukaku/Kane up top

Thank u for sharing the data that backs up ur assertion. It's priceless and that insight should only be available to members. No question about it.
The question that then begs itself is whether to go with 5 at the back. My answer would surely be yes if it weren't for spot #4 & #5 which are currently occupied by Kolasinac & Stones. The first 3 spots being occupied by Alonso Davies Blind..

This is great, but the issue with calculations like these is the time frame. Looking at the season as a whole is made less effective by the 2 wildcards and 35 free transfers that let us make short term moves.

Completely agree, which is why I had mid-priced mids such as Ritchie and Ince because they have extremely favourable fixtures for first 8 gameweeks or so and I could always transfer them out. That being said, after watching Ince blank against 4 awful teams and seeing Choupo-Moting and Jese score against Man U and Arsenal respectively, rotation is a key part to the mid-priced mids, and can be frustrating when they score against a team they shouldn't have. However when playing these top 6 wingbacks, one can keep them week in and week out, because if they aren't a clean sheet and goal threat one week, they will still be a goal threat against other top 6 teams, evidenced by Alonso against Tottenham. So, you wouldn't need to rotate or transfer them out, saving you transfers when you actually need them.

Thanks for the research! Ties in with my theory that a back 5 may actually pay off! With Kane, Lukaku and Firmino up front it only allows me to field 4 wingbacks and a CB with goal threat...

Now if someone on the cheap side like a Cresswell (adds to WL) were to get on my radar, it would be very interesting...

      I agree completely, my backline is;

      Davies, Mendy, Azilipueta, Kolasanic

I only ditched Alonso for Davies so I could bring in Kane.

I was always an advocate of the strong midfield but with the potential points from wing backs, its they way to go.

Id stick with 4, with probably 2 wing backs from the top 6, and three 4.5/5m defenders alternating for those two empty spots. Although attacking returns are very appealing, you need to have those 4.5m defenders that can get clean sheets too. My ideal back line would look something like Alonso, Kolasinac, Daniels (third wingback), Mee and Wimmer.

I hate the way everyone compares expensive defenders to similar priced midfielders. It's a mistake IMO. You should be comparing them to other defenders at different price points instead. Yes Alonso might score 180-190 this year which will probably be more than a Ramsey or Willian, but his place in your squad could also go to a Cedric/Daniels/Davies who may get 120-140 but for considerably less money. A rotation of 2 x 4.5m defenders could also provide similar or better value.

We have Jones, Davies, Cedric, Daniels, Maguire, Dawson, Stones, Bellerin, Kolasinac, Mawson, Keane and many more at 1-2m less than Alonso who can provide equal or better value for money in a defensive spot. The midfielders at that price range tend to be fewer, less predictable and less secure in their teams. So Alonso, Valencia, Walker etc might outscore Willian, Tadic, Arnautovic etc but they are also taking up the place of a Jones or a Davies who can massively outscore an Atsu, Fraser or JWP.

This is why I actually prefer a 4-3-3 this year as it allows for maybe one top priced defender and a couple of excellent value midpricers. Combined with the that we have the best array of 4.5m mids I've seen since playing the game in Carroll, Chalobah, Cork and RLC who can provide great cover and allow a bigger spend on the front 6.

Yeah don't know why this gets so overlooked. It's not, as an arbitrary example, Alonso Vs Ramsey. It is Alonso and useless attacker Vs Ramsey and strong defender.

There's balance to be found in the budget though by cutting down in big hitters, and these defenders are worth the money, if you lose a double digit striker.

With all respect for the very hard work you have obviously done, this is a fatally flawed analysis and I will tell you why in two words. Here's the key sentence from your post:

"...if we assume that the top 6 wingbacks would score and assist in the same ratio as the Chelsea wingbacks did..."

And the two words are: YOU CAN'T.

Alonso is a very, very specific player. People imagine that his points-scoring is because he is a wingback and that therefore any other wingback will be similarly advantaged. Not true. Was Sterling especially advantaged to be played as a striker for Liverpool? No. Because he isn't cut out to be a striker. 😕

Wingback is a position that suits Alonso down to the ground. There are very few (if any) others that it suits so perfectly or benefits so much. Those it doesn't suit so well won't get the same advantage from it. In addition, a good part of Alonso's potency comes from his free-kick capability. Is Walker that good at free-kicks? Is Bellerin? Is Aurier? Playing wingback won't give them that if they don't already have it.

The idea that wingbacks are especially advantaged BECAUSE THEY ARE WINGBACKS is actually a myth. That emperor has no clothes. He is nude. He is starkers. He is a buck-naked emperor. (Hopefully some will be old enough to pick up the Python allusion.) And believe it or not, I am wishing to be helpful by saying so. It would have saved me time (and doubtless a bunch of criticism upcoming) to hold my peace as I mostly do (in terms of long posts at least) on FFS nowadays.

PS. A merry Xmas and goodwill to all men. 🙂

I think thats a very fair point. However even in the admittedly small sample size so far this season, players such as Kolasinac and Davies are showing they are capable of strong returns. It may not be quite as high as Alonso's, but even with a reduction in their predicted output they would compare favourably with many of the names listed in the original posters post I feel.

        1. Ruth_NZ
          • 9 Years

Kolasinac is a specific case. Davies is a specific case. Every player is a specific case. Davies' goal this season came when he was playing LB, not LWB. And his chance creation numbers are heavily assisted by the specific fact that he takes a lot of corners (and takes them quite well), which has nothing whatsoever to do with what position he plays.

Maguire is a specific case of a CB with goal threat. Does that mean that all CBs have goal threat? It's not the position, it is the specific qualities of the player and how well they match to the opportunities they have that need to be assessed.

It's really a myth to think that because a player is used as a WB they have a blanket advantage. You have to look at each player on their own merits.

        I agree.

And I agree with MGPT above talking about the direct comparison of defence and midfield.

I also agree, in theory, with some of what the original post says: there are better defensive options early this season than early in other seasons.

But I have gone cheap (with Davies now) and have scored fairly well in defence for much, much less. When West Brom have a good run of fixtures their 5.0m defenders will largely keep pace with a strong wingback with poor fixtures.

I think the viability of strong at the back changes as the season progresses, teams get more solid at the back, and CSs roll in more predictably. Everyone is talking like 4 at the back is certainly a better option and it may turn out to be, but 3-4-3 has been favoured for so many years; even when we thought a power 5 midfield was best it reverted fairly quickly to 3-4-3.

We will see, and adjust when (if) necessary. But playing with 4 strong wingbacks is not nearly a sure thing

I agree to a point, but I'd suggest that Mendy, Kolasinac and, perhaps, Aurier have the tools to deliver similar returns to Alonso (for that matter, that's wether they're playing as 'wing back' (Kola) or a very advanced full back (Mendy)

Something else that isn't really mentioned which I like about going 4-3-3; Your bench looks a lot stronger as it will naturally contain two 4.5m playing midfielders like RLC/Carrol/Cork.

      Gomes
      Alonso-Kola-Davies-Jones
      Eriksen-Mykh-5.5m
      Kane-Jesus-Firmino

      Elliot-RLC-Carroll-4.0

That's what i'd wildcard to right now, and it looks very good.

That depends on how much faith you have in 4.5 midfielders. A good 4.5 defender on the bench should easily be more useful RLC or Carroll.

Thank you for your hard work on this - a very timely topic.

      Thoughts:

You make a lot of assumptions based on Alonso's performances last season. He is a bit of a freak though - not sure the likes of Bavies can match his scoring ability.

Average vs median statistic: here is a question for other stattos. Should we not be using the median figure to get a more realistic idea of data? Median data discounts the one off "high score" whereas the average figure is often distorted by this.

As a Sanchez owner, do you still think I should shift the funds up front? Bringing in Morata or Jesus along with 8-9m mid

Wth Ozil, Welbeck and Lacazette being rested I can't see a place currently in their side, certainly not the weekend. Maybe a 30 minute cameo. I've already hung on for two weeks.

I'm probably wrong as usual but I'm slowly building my conviction up to the point where I ditch Lukaku cuz in all scenarios Kane Jesus Morata seem superior. Even upgrading ur mid or defense by going 2 upfront seems to be better than keeping Lukaku. We'll know for sure in 3-4 gws which increases the logic of keeping ur WC til the 2nd intl break.

I can see the reasoning for getting rid of Lukaku.

But it is a bit foolhardy getting rid of him with a fixture against a demoralised Everton at Old Trafford. Super Sunday as well. In fact, there are good arguments to be made to even captain hiim, though on paper Kane is clearly the stronger option. Having said that Kane often blanks in the obvious fixtures whereas Lukaku usually delivers in them.

Either way, keep Lukaku for this GW and then sell him if you must.

Am I missing something, why would anyone sell Lukaku? Scoring pretty consistently.

      1. Pochecinno
        • 8 Years
        6 years, 7 months ago

I agree. But his fixtures are getting a bit more difficult and for most people the captaincy will remain firmly on Kane which means you'll have a consistent but very expensive player in Lukaku. I don't see him heavily outscoring other cheaper options in the short term - Morata, Jesus, maybe even Firmino and Vardy.

Yes, individual team needs will differ. If you're definitely captaining Kane this week then it's a good move. Who did you sell to get Alli?

Yes surely keep Lukaku this gw against his previous team but if he delivers a 6pointer I'd consider shipping him simply because it's looking like:
      1. Downgrading for 2 upgrades elsewhere seems to fetch more points
      2. Ur gonna anyways captain Kane for the next 4gws

At that price, u cannot stick with a player based on last yr's perf. U first have to witness him getting over the frustration of not getting transferred elsewhere. If he was 7.5, yeh maybe but at 12.00 no way Jose. Countless other options or combinations therefor are currently better.
Also the decision depends on whether u still have ur WC. If u've already burnt ur WC, I'd stick..
