The Knee Jerk – Gameweek 5

This Sergio Aguero chap looks a good option.

Twenty goals in 25 starts last season; he’s scored 24 and 26 goals in his two previous campaigns.

Priced at 11.4, cheaper than he’s ever been – he looks useful.

Of course, we all know this, it’s just that today’s devastating hat-trick at Watford has provided us with an almighty jolt and left us questioning our logic.

Seven days ago I wondered whether we will ever need look beyond the Harry Kane/Romelu Lukaku combination up front.

In true “knee-jerk” fashion, a week later, I’m now left asking if we can afford to overlook Aguero.

We can’t beat ourselves up; our reservations to this point were understandable.

Pep Guardiola’s plans with the Argentine, working in tandem with his apparent darling Gabriel Jesus, were shrouded in uncertainty.

Aguero has started up with Jesus in four of five Premier League matches. However, he was dropped to the bench at Bournemouth – a decision that appeared to confirm our fears that we could not rely on Aguero and Pep.

But today’s treble took Aguero to four goals since the south coast “rest” and the impact has been instant.

Over 74,000 have already moved to acquire Aguero, with Lukaku the major fall guy. The Manchester United striker has lost over 16,000 owners to his City rival before he’s even kicked a ball in Gameweek 5.

Some are clearly convinced, and the rest of us are left wondering if we should follow suit. City’s fixtures are more than enticing, and the prospect of watching Aguero run riot clutching FPL armbands is a petrifying thought.

Indeed, the only consolation today was that Aguero’s ownership remains relatively modest. He was part of just 502,000 squads ahead of Gameweek 5, and captained by 39% of those managers.

His 20-points will still make waves across mini-leagues and ranks, but it’s surely the least impactful hat-trick of Aguero’s illustrious FPL career.

But the haul hit even harder as a result of Kane’s bitterly disappointing blank.

Almost a million (20.1%) of FPL managers trusted Kane with the armband and were left frustrated by Spurs’ inability to breakdown a stubborn Swansea at Wembley.

Everything – the form, fixture and the statistics – all pointed to Kane being the Gameweek’s must-own, high-scoring option.

But there’s that logic again.

The same thought patterns that can perhaps persuade us that David Silva, Kevin De Bruyne or Gabriel Silva can cover Aguero’s future tallies.

Maybe, like a good few struggling Premier League managers, we just need to go back to basics.

Selecting Aguero in your Fantasy Football team used to be our rule number one. It was our basic instinct.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I'm doing okay but no City players is a concern.

No hits taken so far but I'm really tempted by De Gea, Stephens & Firmino ➡️ Krul, Naughton & G.Jesus -8. Thoughts?

    De Gea
    Kolasinac • Stephens • Hegazi
    Eriksen • Salah • Ritchie • Groß
    Kane • Lukaku • Firmino

    Elliot • T.Carroll • Mbemba • Long

Why not Foster/Elliot (4.0) to save much needed cash?

Stephens to Bavies. I wouldn't boot Firmino as this stage. He was flavour of the month two weeks ago.

It's City players I'm after, I'm looking at ways to get one of their assets in, so not interested in B.Davies at present. I agree that downgrading De Gea to a cheaper option is the best way to free up funds though.

I'd be very tempted to move Miki for a budget player such as Chopper M, Mooy, et al so you can upgrade ACarroll to Jesus or Firmino.

The whole Aguero situation feels identical to Costa and Ibra last year.

Ibra was heavily owned and slowed his production right down, Costa was cheaper and less owned matching him, those who were brave and moved over benefited while those who were too scared due to the ownership lost ground and value.

Feels we are at this point again.

Aguero and Morata are this year's Costa (and to a lesser degree Defoe) who are here to take on the high ownership players.

4 goals in 4 games is not enough for a 11.7m asset IMO.

Aguero showed yesterday what's required at that price point.

Take out the first week and Lukaku has scored 6, 0 and 6 as captain, if his ownership was not so high this would not even be a debate.

KDB is a poor example too, yes he bounced back last week with 9 points but many sold him for Eriksen who scored 8 points.

Not sure there's a moral victory for patience there.

How is 4 in 4 not good enough?! That's the equivalent of 38 in 38, not sure what you're expecting.

Don't forget the missed penalty too. Could have easily been more. Not sure why you'd just ignore GW1 but not the pen miss.

Even if a player scored 6pts a week. 1 goal zero bonus that's 228 pts across the season. I'd take that all day..

Are you happy for your captain to score one goal a week with no bonus? as a single player you would but never as a captain.

            That's not good enough.

Not ideally. But if you said now would you take youe captain score of 6x2 every week to the end of the season, I'd say yes.

Besides lukaku scored a 13 pointer. If you're going to ignore that you may as well ignore Aguero's 20 pointer too. I see you're point but you're blinded by yesterday's game so far IMO. There's too little to go on to firmly exclude lukaku. Aguero also has played a game more, imagine if Lukaku gets a 20 pointer today, then..

I wouldn't been spoilt over the years with Van Persie, Suarez, Ronaldo etc, 1 goal and no bonus is a massive lowering of expectations, be honest, you are handcuffed to his ownership.

Missing a pen is not a plus either, he may well be off them as a result.

              2. Freddo

One other thing you have to factor in and can't ignore is the Jose effect.

They have some firmer tests coming up, Jose mentality is not to lose those games first rather than go toe to toe with them in end to end games, that's a massive negative for an 11.7m striker who you rely on for double digit hauls.

Can see a few 1 mile in the next few that's for sure.

Kane will come good but chances are by then Aguero/Jesus owners will be miles ahead. Kane has been nailed in my team since the start but given he was unable to score points against Swansea its really tempting to switch to Kun.

Kane has West Ham, Huddersfield and Bournmouth in the next 3.

Aguero has 3 home games in 4 against Palace, Stoke and Burnley.

They will probably blow everyone away in the next month.

          Same here.

I genuinely have had enough of his 2 and 1 point offerings. You have now when to be patient and when to realise that keeping hold of a legend is actually holding you back.

Hard sometimes to make that differentiation.

          But.

I think we're at a point now where FPL managers are going to have to make that decision and their season is going to pretty much be defined by what they do next.

Agreed, feels like this season will be defined by the timing of hopping on and off the big hitters because it's impossible to fit them all in.

Not sure it being a marathon and not a sprint applies when there's so many good players who can hurt you who you can't fit in at once.

This year looks like one where you'll have to gamble on the timing of getting these big hitting assets.

If premium strikers keep delivering but without a standout choice emerging then this will make for the most interesting season in years. Many of us look at FF as if it were a complez puzzle to which an answer can be found, and generally a correct strategy emerges. This leads to a convergence in team selection, particularly across a site like this.
Imagine though if Lukaku blanks today, Lacazette gets a brace and Morata scores again. We could be looking at 6 perfectly logical choices for 2 premium striker positions in our teams. Kane, Aguero, Jesus, Lukaku, Morata and Lacazette would all be great choices.
It is shaping up to be the most interesting seasons in years, even if this means that those of use striving to find a logical solution are left frustrated that we can't master it as we have in many other seasons. I intend to enjoy it.

Except Kane's actually not really delivering, is he?

4 blanks in 5 games isn't really delivering.

And, sad to say, but this Wembley hoodoo business looks to have some genuine substance to it.

Sad to say, the amount of damage he does to the rest of your team and the absolute hammering your rank takes when you captain him and he, inevitably these days, fails, Kane is a liability now.

Beginning to think the managers who are going to do well this season are the ones that cut the chord and gamble on lesser priced players.

    1. Cok3y5murf
      • 7 Years
      6 years, 7 months ago

The amount of damage he does to the rest of your team is key here.

He isn't doing much damage to the rest of my team, which is why I got him in to captain him for these run of fixtures. But each team is different. If you can spend that extra 1m or 2m saving by selling him effectively to strengthen elsewhere, then it could be worth it.

If Kane and Lukaku are about to have a bad run of fixtures and there are other strikers I would rather captain, I will sell them without hesitation, regardless of their ownership.

Your whole team has to be built around him, especially if you have Lukaku too.

Aguero and Morata look like they are going to outscore Kane and Lukaku and save you £2m in the process.

        1. Cok3y5murf
          • 7 Years
          6 years, 7 months ago

Outscore them when? Over the season? Firstly, I disagree with that and secondly, that doesn't even matter. That matters only in FPL Draft.

In FPL, it's only about getting players in at the right time. For the next 2 weeks, Lukaku and Kane on paper have the best fixtures.

To be honest I cannot be arsed arguing about this.

Like I said above, people are going to have to start making tough choices here and decide whether what they're seeing is a worrying trend or just a blip.

Keeping Kane could work out great especially when you look at how tempting the West Ham fixture looks.

But if he blanks and Aguero tears up a pish poor Palace side who already look gone that's more ground lost. It only takes a few weeks of that happening and other FPL teams start disappearing over the horizon.

It's either keep Kane and keep hoping or move on and use the savings to upgrade other areas.

"But if he blanks and Aguero tears up a pish poor Palace side"

I could say the same that if Aguero blanks and Kane tears up West Ham, that's more ground lost.

The risk of going without Kane is the same as the risk of going without Aguero. There's just nothing to suggest that Aguero is a better pick than Kane right now. Both have shown good form (lately), both teams have shown good form, both have a plum fixture next. You're only afraid because of what happened this week, but next week has nothing to do with this.

Even Aguero owners captained Kane this week. It was just an unexpected showing from Spurs. We don't have foresight.

The solution is to have both and unhandcuff yourself from Lukaku and his ownership.

And what has Lukaku done wrong?

Has better fixtures than Aguero in the next 2, a focal point in his team unlike Aguero who shares goals with Jesus, and more importantly, hasn't even played this GW!

                    6, 0 and 6 as captain at 11.7.

At that price you could argue what's he's done that is right.

But how many more weeks like this are you prepared to take?

Kane owners have had one good weekend from him this season. That's it.

                One.

It's not like we're talking about one bad gameweek for Kane and we're overreacting. This has been the norm rather than the rarity this term.

I have that decision to make as a Kane owner. Right now I'm close to wildcarding and ditching him.

Most of us Kane owners will keep him, though. That might work out well, but there's no guarantees either way so we all have to make our own decision and live with the consequences.

Well I just brought him in this week, so I understand how you must feel.

It's safe to say that his first 4 weeks has failed for you, as a 12.5m investment. But look to the future, really.

To be honest, Kane has done a lot of damage to people over the last 5 weeks.

No matter how much you dress it up or try to polish this turd, returns with the armband of 1,1,2 and 2 is going to kill your rank, regardless of what the rest of your team does.

To me anyway, when your star striker fails to score in 4 out of 5 league games, regardless of how many times he hits the post/crossbar you have to start sitting up and taking notice.

A factor which is making me keep Kane is that in my money league none of my rivals have him. I'm not too far behind with him misfiring so if he does start firing soon he will take me to the top. If I was just playing for an overall rank I'd be more willing of taking the risk to get rid of him. Just hoping Jesus can keep in touch with aguero for me as captain this week.

      But there's the point.

They don't have him and they're ahead of you.

It's only 5 GWs but already there's a pattern emerging. If that trend continues then in 10 GWs the gap will be a lot bigger than it is now.

There's a reason they're ahead of you right now isn't there?
