The Knee Jerk – Gameweek 5

This Sergio Aguero chap looks a good option.

Twenty goals in 25 starts last season; he’s scored 24 and 26 goals in his two previous campaigns.

Priced at 11.4, cheaper than he’s ever been – he looks useful.

Of course, we all know this, it’s just that today’s devastating hat-trick at Watford has provided us with an almighty jolt and left us questioning our logic.

Seven days ago I wondered whether we will ever need look beyond the Harry Kane/Romelu Lukaku combination up front.

In true “knee-jerk” fashion, a week later, I’m now left asking if we can afford to overlook Aguero.

We can’t beat ourselves up; our reservations to this point were understandable.

Pep Guardiola’s plans with the Argentine, working in tandem with his apparent darling Gabriel Jesus, were shrouded in uncertainty.

Aguero has started up with Jesus in four of five Premier League matches. However, he was dropped to the bench at Bournemouth – a decision that appeared to confirm our fears that we could not rely on Aguero and Pep.

But today’s treble took Aguero to four goals since the south coast “rest” and the impact has been instant.

Over 74,000 have already moved to acquire Aguero, with Lukaku the major fall guy. The Manchester United striker has lost over 16,000 owners to his City rival before he’s even kicked a ball in Gameweek 5.

Some are clearly convinced, and the rest of us are left wondering if we should follow suit. City’s fixtures are more than enticing, and the prospect of watching Aguero run riot clutching FPL armbands is a petrifying thought.

Indeed, the only consolation today was that Aguero’s ownership remains relatively modest. He was part of just 502,000 squads ahead of Gameweek 5, and captained by 39% of those managers.

His 20-points will still make waves across mini-leagues and ranks, but it’s surely the least impactful hat-trick of Aguero’s illustrious FPL career.

But the haul hit even harder as a result of Kane’s bitterly disappointing blank.

Almost a million (20.1%) of FPL managers trusted Kane with the armband and were left frustrated by Spurs’ inability to breakdown a stubborn Swansea at Wembley.

Everything – the form, fixture and the statistics – all pointed to Kane being the Gameweek’s must-own, high-scoring option.

But there’s that logic again.

The same thought patterns that can perhaps persuade us that David Silva, Kevin De Bruyne or Gabriel Silva can cover Aguero’s future tallies.

Maybe, like a good few struggling Premier League managers, we just need to go back to basics.

Selecting Aguero in your Fantasy Football team used to be our rule number one. It was our basic instinct.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Still can't believe Spurs were never awarded a penalty, Mike Dean costing us points.

Saying that, with all the possession and chances Spurs created they shouldn't be relying on a penalty to beat Swansea at home, sorry Wembley.

      Both were penalties...it's f%&king annoying 🙂

        They weren't.

I'm a Kane owner and as peed off as I am with yet another eff all return from him, they weren't pens in my opinion.

Ref agreed and his opinion is the only one that counts.

          They so were 🙂

#1 handball. Unintentional yes, however he wasn't at point blank range and his arm was in an unnatural position. His arm moved out to hit the ball before trying to pull it back to his side.

#2 Aurier. Did not handball as the ref said, heels were definitely clipped, clear contact.

You'd expect at least one to be given.

Would have been extremely harsh, imo.

I had no problems with both of those non calls by the ref. Maybe that's just me, but I thought they were the right calls.

Maybe if you had video footage then the clipped heel might have been given but it looked to me like the Spurs player was already looking to go to ground anyway.

The way Kane's been playing and baring in mind that I benched Fabianski for Ryan, Fabs would have probably saved the pen anyway!

When I was making team for GW1 I thought that EVERYONE will go with Lukaku and he is literally a must have! A no brainer choice. I knew he wont score every week but he will be a top scorer next to Kane.
I loved owning him when he played for Everton and now he plays United! He's on pens too. Perfect captain material.

When I look at all who sold or selling him right now I'm so happy. If I'm lucky maybe they will get Aguero.

    Fabianski Elliot

Yes, Kane would be my priority on any team. I'd wait and see on Sanchez. This is a tricky time to be playing the WC with some established ff names just returning to match fitness.

My ideal front 3 would still be Kane, Lukaku and Firmino.

While I do think a City asset is hard to ignore at the moment with their current fixtures, I do think we are being highly misled by yesterday's scoreline.

The first 3 goals in my opinion were quite lucky.

    - Aguero's goal was offside
    - Gomes' mistake put it on a plate for Aguero's 2nd
    - Gabriel's goal was offside
    - Aguero's 3rd (while brilliantly done) was just appalling defending from 4 defenders and a goalkeeper but I'll exclude this one.

Even the xG suggests the scoreline shouldn't have been so high.

    https://i.imgur.com/4hGSDPE.png

Watford were denied a penalty from Walker's challenge on Chalobah too.

Now I'm expecting the usual "obviously a non-Aguero owner" comments on this site, that's fine. My point is not to get a City player, just to do so with caution. I see people hitting the wildcard button on the basis of yesterday's game. People must have a short memory when it comes to Pep and rotation - nobody is safe. With a Champion's league game 3 days after Crystal Palace we're almost guaranteed to see changes made.

Yes, fair point about rot at CTY.

However, 6 goals in one game doesn't seem to suggest a "fluke" score. CTY always have goals in them and it looks like they have really tightened up.

The problem is identifying fantasy targets.

      Points are points though.

FPL doesn't look at it and go "Aguero's first goal was offside so we'll take those points away from his owners". "Watford should have had a penalty, so we'll take Oatamendi's CS points away".

As the expression goes, sometimes it's better to be lucky than good.

The rotation threat is real, but it's the same for all the top clubs, as the Scout has already said this week, so I don't see how this is really going to make that much of a difference.

You can not pick players from teams in Europe and expect no rotation, Ben Davies a perfect example.

It's going to happen a lot, alternative is to ignore that and fill your team with mid table fodder.

      Could you do
Mkhi/Silva/Morata > Lukaku/Salah/5.5(Groß/Brady)? Even better if can stretch Salah to Hazard.

You're just going to end up transferring Lukaku back in when he inevitably does a Kun in some game. Kane-Kaku-Kun is a lovely forward line, don't listen to those who talk about "balance" in midfield

I am on my wildcard after two horribel rounds.
I went from topping all my private leagues to falling down to 10 - 15 after two 30 point round in a row. (Yes i C Kane this round)

My wildcard team is very very top heavy. And very back heavy. But pretty weak in midfield.
But i belive that if you have defensive players such as Walker and Kolosiniac. Rather than having 3 - 4 mid priced midfielders.

What do you think of this team? Utter crap or good to go?

    Fabianski
    Kolasinac - Naughton - Walker - Jones
    Gros - Salah - Silva
    Kane - Aguero - Morata

He's played in every game. Got benched once but still came on.

This "its Pep" thing, could also say "its Wembley though" for Kane.

Kane's next 2 are at West Ham and Huddersfield, and when he does return to Wembley again it's against Bournemouth. Can't say I subscribe to the "it's Wembley though" for Kane mentality it's not a new ground to him or the rest of the team.

I know... but hopefully if the worst happens & he is benched v palace... it looks like he will still make up for it in the next game as long as he stays fit he will score goals. An injury will make an early xfer look very foolish though

      Hell Yeah!

How's my current 11 looking? Had to take first 4 point hit of the year & feel a bit dirty for it. But a Kun explosion v Palace will justify it. 0.0 ITB & 0 FT so any injuries this week & I am fooked.

    Forster
    Bertrand, Jones, Mee
    Salah, Ramsey, Richie, Brady
    Kane, Kaku, Kun(c)
    (Elliott, Naughton, Hegazi, Chalobah)

I saw it was possible yesterday with Kun at 11.4 & Richie at 5.9 so had to take a leap of faith. But hoping it will pay off. Next challenge is to turn Salah to Hazard if Liverpool don't recover form 🙂

I will WC GW7 into something similar.
Bertie to Davies and Rambo to Eriksen somehow would be dream team

Yeah Rambo to any kind of 9.0 or 9.5 would be super... Forster >4.0 can make up for 1.0 of it... need to squeeze TV from somewhere else to bridge rest of Gap. If a playing 4.0 def emerges that should do it by selling Hegazi at his high SV

How's it looking? 0.2 ITB, no frees

    Foster
    Alonso Jones Davies Naughton
    Eriksen Salah Mkhi Brady
    Kane Aguero

    Elliott Mee Carroll Quaner

    Elliot (Foster)
Davies - Stones - Suttner (Ake, Rangel)
Salah - Eriksen - Mkhitaryan - Carroll (Redmond)
    Kane - Jesus - Abraham
Bit worried about Davies involvement, and Redmond is not inspiring at 6.5. I have 0.6 ITB with 1FT. Do I do:
    A) Davies -> Cedric?
    B) Redmond -> 7.0?

    Foster (Myhill)
    Davies Bertrand Jones (Aké Long)
    Eriksen Coutinho Mooy Carroll (Romeu)
    Kane Lukaku Firmino
    _
Thoughts on this lot - it's time to WC isn't it?

    Also considering:
Lukaku Bertrand (-4) > Aguero Mendy

Kane/Kun ML differentials at this stage.

    I need some advices here:

    Elliot/Foster
    Bavies/Jones/Cedric/Lowe/Mbemba
    Eriksen/Miki/Ritchie/TC/Chalobah
    Kane/Kaku/Firmino

    1FT 2.5ITB

My initial play was Cedric to Kola.
Would you stick with it or there is some good way to put City into this team? I think long term I would rather prefer Salah not Firmino however not enough funds to to Miki Firmino to Salah Jesus.
    Ideas ?

I'm afraid that if I don't get City forward for CP game I will be down another 100k places or more...

that team is almost a fake with 2.5 itb. I simply love it!
Cedric, Jones > Kola, 4.5 would be my move but as you have money than just cedric > kola a no brainer

I see the total number of players has tripped over from 4.988m to 5.0m over night.

Top 10k is tough going now!

    D - Other?

    DDG - Elliott
    Bavies - Mee - TAA - Mbemba - Hegazi
    Salah - Alli - Ritchie - Ramsey - Carroll
    Kane - Lukaku - Gabbi
