Captains

Captain Poll – Gameweek 6

We start our look ahead to Gameweek 6 with the launch of our Captain Poll and a run down of the key contenders for the armband.

Harry Kane (12.5) ran away with our previous poll, with an emphatic 49% of the votes ahead of Spurs’ Wembley match against Swansea City. But the 0-0 draw that followed could mute interest when he drops by the London Stadium to face West Ham.

While he did score a brace in his side’s last road trip, away to Everton in Gameweek 4, that has been his only attacking return of the season.

West Ham’s recent resilience could also turn voters off Kane – the Hammers go into Saturday’s lunchtime fixture looking for their third consecutive clean sheet, after shipping 10 goals across the previous three.

Those still backing the underperforming striker, who has lost 71,000+ managers since Friday’s deadline, can still cling to some reassuring statistics for comfort. His tally of 32 goal attempts, 23 of which have arrived from inside the box, betters any other Premier League player.

With a hat-trick, assist and maximum bonus returns in Manchester City’s 6-0 away rout of Watford, Sergio Aguero (11.5) is expected to power his way to the summit.

A table-topping eight goal attempts against the Hornets in Gameweek 5 will give his backers further confidence, as will a home tie this weekend against a Crystal Palace side that has conceded eight times this campaign.

More than 324,000 FPL managers have recruited the Argentinian since Saturday, and it is also worth noting that on home turf only Liverpool have had more shots on goal than City.

Yet his striker partner Gabriel Jesus (10.5) also offers a very viable alternative. The pair have both scored four times in the last three Gameweeks, with the Brazilian serving up 12 points in his previous home outing.

Aguero has managed 11 points over his two appearances at the Etihad this term but failed to deliver double-digits last season, scoring just five of his 20 goals on home turf.

The form of Pep Guardiola’s side has persuaded 56,000 FPL managers to ditch Manchester United’s Romelu Lukaku (11.7) this week as they freshen up their frontlines. But given his goal, assist and three FPL bonus points in the 4-0 victory over Everton on Sunday, as well as attacking returns in all but one of his first five fixtures, the Belgian is likely to be a strong rival to Aguero and Kane when the Red Devils visit Southampton.

Although the Saints have yet to concede at St Mary’s in the league, they have allowed ten shots in the box – the fourth worst home tally.

Christian Eriksen’s (9.7) three assists and a goal, as well as Dele Alli’s (9.5) two successful strikes should ensure they attract interest for those backing a Spurs victory but have lost confidence in Kane. The midfield duo sit in 27.5% and 33.4% of FPL teams respectively.

A first successful strike of the season from Henrikh Mkhitaryan (8.5), against Everton, adds to a CV for 2017/18 that already includes five assists and ensures that he remains in our thoughts.

Among other differential options is Wayne Rooney (7.5), whose Everton side begin a far kinder run of fixtures with the visit of a Bournemouth this weekend. The Cherries have conceded the second highest amount of shots in the box, shipped nine goals and are still without their first clean sheet. For those that believe fixtures can improve form, the 16%-owned former England captain, who has two goals so far, may appeal.

Liverpool attackers could also push for a place near the top, despite only managing a 1-1 draw against Burnley on Saturday.

The Reds’ 35 goal attempts in that match, seven more than Manchester City fired off against Watford, suggests that stronger returns will come their way when they visit a Leicester City side that conceded twice against Chelsea at the King Power Stadium in Gameweek 4.

Mohamed Salah (9.2), with three goals and two assists, is likely to be their main source of interest, particularly as his 32.9% ownership is the highest among Jurgen Klopp’s troops.

Arsenal’s Alexandre Lacazette has scored in both of his home matches as West Brom make their way to the Emirates on Monday. And Alexis Sanchez could also come into contention for a start should Danny Welbeck fail to recover from the groin problem that forced him off at Chelsea on Sunday.

The poll is now live in the middle column on your homepage on desktop, or via the slide-in menu on mobile and tablet under Recent Comments.

Remember, we are looking for your vote for the player you think will be most effective, regardless of whether you own them or not.

We will be back to check in on progress in the poll later ahead of the Gameweek 6 deadline when we deliver our “Captain Sensible” article offering an analysis of the results and the statistics behind the leading contenders.

What is the minimum you would be happy with a rank of (after 5gw):

    A - 2mill
    B - 1.5m
    C - 1 mill
    D - 750k
    E - 500k
    F - 250k + lower

Just as long as I still have all my chips entact and a decent team going forward, rank doesn't matter yet. Around 1m would be healthy enough though

My proposed moves are Eriksen and Morata to Silva and Aguero (C), yes I know it's Eriksen but silva is looking efficient with the assists and Aguero is Aguero, gives me another captaincy option

    Will give me:
    Fabianski (Elliott)
    Davies Jones Clark (Naughton Rosenoir)
    *Silva Salah Mkhi Brady (Chalobah)
    Kane Aguero* Firmino

    Thoughts please?

Get rid of one: Richalison or Jese. Both priced the same. Watford have worse fixtures, Stoke are a worse team.

The comparison tool shows Richarlison better in almost every regard.....

Is Aguero ‘essential’, especially for Gameweek 6?

If so and you are a non-owner, who makes way? Kane or Lukaku?

Can his dramatic returns be ‘covered’ with the likes of Jesus, Silva or De Bruyne?

If you are not captaining Aguero this week – who is the best captain? Kane, Lukaku or another?

Got 'cover' and 'essential' into this to spark instant outrage 🙂

      Here's my thoughts

Sell Kane for Aguero, Kane scores against West Ham, while Aguero does nothing, and Jesus scores a hattrick.
Sell Kane for Aguero, Kane does nothing again, Aguero scores another hattrick
Sell Lukaku for Aguero, Lukaku fails to find the net against Southampton
Sell Lukaku for Aguero, Lukaku records his season best score.
Do nothing - every one you don't get scores
Do nothing - every one of your players scores

Any of these can happen – perhaps the only solution is to wildcard, get in all three of Lukaku, Kane and Aguero and gaze at the horror show that is the rest of your squad. 😉

Or do nothing, have a cup of tea and forget GWK 6 exists. 🙂

I've got Kane, Lukaku and Aguero and scored 80 points this week so not really a horror show.

        Squad reads:

        Eriksson Gros D. Silva
        Kane Lukaku Aguero

        Subs: Maenpaa, Carrol, Chalobah, Mbemba

I actually got all 3 after great wildcard fail. Already had Lukaku. Morata & Firmino made way Aguero & Kane.
Costed me precious 12 points but I can now use my sofa to sit and watch the matches.
Rest team is not actually a horror show and looks Okayish.
Could afford to fit in Alli, Salah, Brady, Jones, Cedric, etc. alongwith other premium players like Elliot, Foster, Naughton, Mbemba, Rosenior, Carroll, RLC. Still have luxury of 0.7m ITB.

I don't think he is, I wouldnt drop kane or lukaku for him as they have 2 good fixtures coming up. For those like me who have firmino as 2nd striker and money itb I think a firmino>jesus transfer looks good though. Remember last home game it was jesus who scored 2 goals. For me best captain is kane this week. He has been unlucky so far and west ham look very unsettled and shaky imo.

I don't have Aguero, so not bringing him in at the expense one of my three big fitting forwards.

Transferring out premium strikers every week after they go big is silly. You picked Kane etc. for a reason, why are you getting rid after one blank?

Not even considering getting rid of Kane. The braces will come.

Lukaku to Aguero is, however, very tempting indeed. Going to be a very close call whether I do or don't make that switch.

Lukaku is obviously still a brilliant option. The question is, with his superior fixtures and attack-minded colleagues, is Aguero a BETTER option? I'm leaning towards yes, in the short term at least.

Feels very wrong getting rid of Lukaku though as he hasn't put a foot wrong so far.

No, having cover should refers to the event that a player / team score big, you have a player in that team that also benefits from some of the points.

In this case, Jesus's 6 points does not cover Aguero 20 points sufficiently.

You don't think that fixtures make any difference whatsoever to the likelihood that a premium striker will score in any given game?

Burnley, Swansea and WBA can keep out big teams better than Liverpool and Arsenal on their day. It wouldn't be a safe play to waste FT's chopping and changing premium strikers all the time.

I understand the impression that poor teams will play more defensively and are more likely to keep it tight than a rival top team who will go for the win and therefore give up more chances at the other end.

However I don't think that logic is enough to invalidate the gulf in quality. Just look at the odds for Aguero scoring against Crystal Palace at home this week and Chelsea away next week.

Wonderful baiting with cover and essential, sterling work Jonty.

FWIW I bought Kun in last night and now have all three of them up top, the sacrifice was Alli and Tammy for Ritchie and Aguero. Midfield has two big hitters still (Mkhi and Salah) and Ritchie, Brady and Carroll. Defence is cheap but been returning for me all season. May only be a short term solution but having all three does seem a rather lovely problem solver if possible without causing destruction.

And have the wildcard if it all goes to hell.

I've got Jesus and plan to captain him. It would be crazy to take a hit for a sideways move to Aguero. Getting him in for Kane or Lukaku alongside Jesus would be too much faith in City. City have let me down too many times in 'easy' home games. Palace aren't as bad as the table suggests and will have had a week of Woy's defensive coaching.

Aguero is probably better option than jesus, coz for some reason guardiola like to sub him after 60 minutes. But i assume that we should watch cities midweek cup game and see how much game-time jesus/aguero will get. If any of them plays whole game than probably that player wont be in for a whole game in weekend.
And to answer your question, I was planing for gw6 lukaku to jesus but after seeing aguero's preformans i am a little bit torn now.

it is going to happen all season (much more than any other season I can remember) when you just can't have them all.
Too many premium strikers out there. I reckon there is easily 7/8 strikers that can get 20 goals this season.
I thought Lukaku was poor until the last few minutes yesterday then bang 12 points.
Before yesterday Jesus had outscored Kun (with fewer minutes as well).

Aguero is essential. He's the best player in the game, in the most attacking team in the league.

The doubts were that he's even remain a City player, let alone in the Premier League. With Pep clearly a fan now, and Jesus playing alongside to occupy other defenders, he's a brace waiting to happen every game. Whether he gets 30mins or 90mins on e pitch, I want him.

With De Bruyne playing deeper, he's assisting Jesus and Sane/Silva too, he's the best way to cover City's goal threat. And he takes penalties.

Worries about rotation need to be balanced against those for Kane and Lukaku. Kane may get rested too now Spurs have Llorente, and Lukaku has already lost penalties.

Avoiding City completely at the moment.

The midfield is not worth touching unless they get injuries and cheap options like B Silva, Sterling or Sane become available.

As for the forward, Jesus seems the most nailed on and I think Pep's treatment of Aguero from January makes me wary what his plans are long-term and if they will continue as a partnership.

For the time being I'm hoping Firmino, Kane and Morata will prove better options.

I thought that before too, but something has clearly changed. I think when City refused to sell him on the summer. Pep loves Jesus and De Bruyne, but he's definitely moved them both around to accommodate Aguero.

I think the "new" position Aguero is playing, in between Jesus and De Bruyne, sometimes alongside Jesus, was set for Sanchez, or even Neymar.

        Until they sign a younger/better number 10, I think he's essential.

      Kane > Aguero

      Pro's:
Kane isn't getting as many big chances as Aguero
      City are scoring for fun
Aguero is Fantasy gold when on form, and he is on form and fixtures to match.
Releases more funds for better players elsewhere
Kane not as highly owned as Lukaku so if he does get a haul it won't hurt as much not having him.
Means you still have Lukaku for Crystal Palace in 2 weeks

      Con's
Lukaku seems to be the favoured one to ditch on here because fixtures turn tough after IB.

Everyone who scores a hat-trick cannot get essential. Agüero is not either. Actually, no one, not a single player is essential, provided you get him covered. In the City dilemma, three facts are obvious to me. (1) City scores well and they will continue that way, (2) but they will not score 5 games every game like they did in the last three games, (3) and their every 15 goals will be like it has been in the past: Agüero (5), Jesus (4), Sane (2), Stones (2), Sterling, Otamendi, in other words always shared between the protagonists. Same with assists: KDB (4), Silva (3), Agüero (2), Walker (3), Mendy (2).

For me what has happened in the past week is clear. For every 15 goal scored by City, 9 will be distributed between Agüero and Jesus (but God knows how). Similarly, half of those will be assisted by KDB or Silva. As such, recruiting a City player has to be on the assumption that based on price/value calculations, are you content with goals/assists being shared so equally?

For me Agüero is not only non-essential, Jesus' being 1.0 cheaper should provide better value (for goals). Having said this, Agüero's assist potential makes them either equal or slightly better for Agüero in my view.

Now let me try to refute myself. In the same period of 3 games, Spurs have scored 5 only but of those 5, 4 were scored by Kane. That, to my thinking, is the summary. If Spurs improve their form and score more (which is natural) and if City stop scoring 5 goals in every game (which would also be natural) then Kane = Agüero and it is only a matter of personal preference.

Yet, Spurs is not yet in form and City is... There lies the question I guess...

Not essential as season before, with Kane, Lukaku, Jesus, Morata in the mix

Agüero is not essential. An essential player is someone I'd absolutely have to get immediately.

But would you really suggest that I should disrupt my Kane, Lukaku, and Jesus front three to get him? There's a good chance that you wouldn't, so he's not essential.

I've taken an 8 point hit and tripled up on Man City by doing:

      Kane > Aguero
      Lukaku > Jesus
      Richarlison > Silva

To me, Kane is poor value. He's blanked in 4 of 5 matches and the biggest reason my rank is 4.01m. Also, Lukaku and Kane have higher ownership 55% and 28% respectively than Aguero (17%) and Jesus (11%) meaning my climb up the ladder would be greater. When you take in to account 3 of City's next 4 games are CRY, STK and BUR it's worth a shot. I'm not overly concerned about Aguero or Jesus being rested as I still think they will outscore Kane and Lukaku in the next 5 gameweeks.

      1. El Lobito 10

Everyone probably agrees that Lukaku, Kane and Aguero will score 25 goals more or less. If that doesn't make a player essential I don't know what does. For those who think it is a ridiculous statement, if this does not make a player essential, what then does? How do you define essential? A 25 goal striker is probably worth 200+ points and all three offer explosive captain options.

With the dominance of a wing back system this season, an absence of midfield heavy hitters is negated. A 4 or even 5 man backline allows you to get all three up front while offering strong potential for points from the back too.

With strong options in midfield punching above their price tag - Silva, Mkhitaryan, Ritche etc - getting all of these essential strikers is anything but absurd. In fact, I would argue that to instantly dismiss such an argument demonstrates ignorance.

On another point regarding the argument for Jesus over Kun. Pep tends to start him yes, but he also tends to take him off in almost every single game. City tend to score late goals as the opposing team tires. Jesus will not benefit from this. A second and more important point I feel, is that Jesus is not a reliable captain. For a 10m+ player, he needs to be explosive captain material.

I agree with all of that, but would add in his new position/new system, Aguero is assuming more of a central role in City's attacks. He isn't just a focal point; he's a hub to assist Jesus/Sane/Sterling.

I thought KDB would be that player, but instead he's becoming a Luka Modric.

Kun sometimes just explodes -but last season 1 league hat-trick and a "fiver".
A lot of people had lost patience and transferred him out before the Newastle game as he hadn't scored a league goal for over 2 months. Then didn't do a lot for the next 3 months (was an injury for part of this time) and finally got going in January.

Hear this 'essential' thing every week,

Morata will bag a brace and assist at Stoke then he'll be 'essential'

Then Kane will get a hat-trick at Huddersfield and it'll be the same for him.

We don't have enough room or money for all these 'essential' players sadly, my knee ain't jerking 🙂

I'm a non-owner with no City 'cover' as of GW5. As much as I'd love to get Aguero in, I'm not willing to lose Kaku or Kane, so I've downgraded Alli instead. Given that, it was a choice between RLC + Aguero and Brady + Jesus, and I decided to go for the latter on Saturday itself.

How does this look? Where I have 3 premium strikers! Has worked for me the past 2 weeks! Had Kane, Lukaku, Jesus for the last 2 weeks, but feel Aguero is much much fantasy gold than Lukaku, also the fixture swing.

      De Gea
      Davies Otamendi Bertrand
      Salah Ritchie Brady Jese
      Kane Aguero Jesus

Bench - Elliott, Carroll, Lowe, Long

Thoughts - I feel this season 3 strong strikers are a must! Also, my defense is pretty decent. Mids are the concern, but I feel one of Ritchie/Brady/Jese need to get some returns in a GW. And in the case of Ritchie and Brady, they are heavily involved in any goal for their teams. Jese, I might change, but have him for now since he is a sure starter, a striker classified as a mid and the fixtures.

I also have my WC intact!

      Thoughts?

      Kane to Aguero. Done.

He's had 5 weeks in my team, I would say that's more than enough time to show up. Maybe in seasons past you could look beyond the odd week or 2 of blanks (where his price tag made him a reasonable pick and we had the bargain basement mids like Mahrez to fall back on) but when you're the most expensive forward in the game and others are outperforming you it's time to go.

I'll more than likely bring him back for GW7 and maybe 8 then look at who to swap out from there. Yes it could burn me, yes I might do well out of it, only time will tell but one thing I do know is my team is going to look awesome with a Aguero(C) beside it ready for Crystal Palace.
I'd rather cheer on a Man City goal than a Spurs one this week 😆

Wanted to do Mounie, DDG, Eriksen --> Aguero, Fabianski, Grob for a hit but didn't realize Grob would rise

    DDG, Elliot
    Davies, Dawson, Yoshida, Mee, Long
    Eriksen, Mhiki, Salah, Atsu, Carroll
    Lukaku, Kane, Mounie

1 - Do same but get Brady
2 - Do same moves but get a 4M GK
3 - Do same and get Jesus
4 - Wildcard and get Grob. Sort out other chaff
    5 - Kane --> Aguero

Let me guess, are you a Aguero/Jesus + Lukaku owner and a Non-Kane owner? 😀

So looking at a WC. I'm doing okay, 395k OR and going strong in some ML's but want better. I'm desperate for a new back line and I've got Jesus for City coverage but feel I need Silva/Aguero so i'm now tempted by a WC.

    Existing Team:

    Foster (Elliot)
    Dann Daniels Jones (Gomez Suttner)
    Mkhi Alli Atsu Salah (Carroll)
    Lukaku Jesus Firmino

    Looking at:

    Foster (Elliot)
    Trippier Ottamendi Jones (Mbemba Naughton)
    Mkhi Salah Atsu Silva (£4.5m)
    Aguero Lukaku Firmino

    Thoughts?

Yeah Dann and Daniels need to go.

It's not that different though is it. Did Lukaku --> Ageuro myself.

I'd want some Spurs mid/fwd with those fixtures and Trippier risky, otherwise looking nice if you want to refresh your team. No need to WC of course, but I get the temptation.

Seem to be a lot of 100+ scores on the twitter page but not many from our community. Just a week where the educated guesses don't work as well?

I got 98. Could have got 100 if lukaku had not score that goal. He nicked 2 bonus points of mikhi.....

There's always 100 point scores on the Twitter page. No worries, if you got above the average you did well, especially if you didn't own Aguero.

    On a wildcard, how's this?

    Elliot Speroni
    Trippier Jones Cedric Fernandez Mbemba
    Salah Silva Ritchie Gross Carroll
    Jesus Kane Lukaku

Think Trippier is first choice for the prem at least

    DDG (Elliot)
    Bavies/Kola/Dunk (Cedric/Long)
    Salah/Erikson/Tadic/GroB (Carroll)
    Lukaku/Jesus/JRod

    1FT with 2.5mil ITB

Need to ship JRod and Tadic as they are both deadweights.

    Thinking Tadic to Ritchie
But which striker to ship JRod for:

    A) Rooney
    B) Vardy
    C) Firminho

I quite like the punt on Rooney as he was the ray of light in the terrible Everton team yesterday and surely they will start scoring against the minnows

Is Vardy the better pick than Firmino?

Seems they both do well for BPS but Firmino is very inconsistent and you are better off with just Mane/Salah.

everyone in my mini league has Kane. Am I mad to be considering Kane to Jesus?

    frontline currently:
    Lukaku Kane Firmino
