Scout Notes – Carabao Cup – Tuesday

Jurgen Klopp and Mauricio Pochettino provide some hints about their weekend line-ups, while West Ham and Swansea City continue to keep things tight at the back.

There’s a first win for Roy Hodgson and a first goal for Josh King, but it’s more away day gloom for Stoke City.

Here are the notes from Tuesday’s Carabao Cup ties…

Coutinho primed for repeat performance

Liverpool warmed up for Saturday’s trip to Leicester City with a midweek Carabao Cup trip…to Leicester City.

They left having lost 2-0 but with a few pointers as to who will make the return journey at the weekend.

Philippe Coutinho started and ran the show until taken off at half-time by Jurgen Klopp, with the manager quick to explain the substitution post-match.

“That was the plan before the game, he needs match time but it was not for a second the plan [to keep him on] and it was not allowed to let him play again for 90 minutes, or 60 or 70 or 80 or whatever. It was clear that 45 is the limit, we need to make him fit but we cannot push him through. That’s all.”

With Sadio Mane serving the final match of his suspension in Saturday’s tea-time kick-off, Coutinho looks likely to make his third start in a week at the King Power.

The same probably can’t be said for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, who was handed his first Liverpool start last night and only occasionally made much of a case for another one in Gameweek 6.

But Fantasy Premier League managers with Alberto Moreno (2.0%) or Trent Alexander-Arnold (2.1%) in their squads would have been encouraged by Tuesday’s teamsheet.

Both were unused subs at Leicester and although Andrew Robertson combined well with Coutinho down the left in the first half, it could be that both he and the versatile Joe Gomez will be back on the bench for Saturday’s league match.

Gomez is suspended for the Champions League trip to Moscow, although with Jon Flanagan as back-up, Klopp is perhaps willing to risk Alexander-Arnold against the Foxes on Saturday, regardless.

Leicester survived a Coutinho-inspired first-half battering to win 2-0, thanks to goals after the break from Shinji Okazaki and Islam Slimani.

Midfielder Vicente Iborra provided an assist on his debut for the Foxes, while his fellow new signing, defender Aleksandar Dragovic, also made his Leicester bow.

Spurs make no mistake?

Spurs coach Mauricio Pochettino sent out mixed messages aplenty as his side laboured to a 1-0 win over Barnsley.

He spoke pre-match of how prioritising domestic cups over the league and Champions League would be ‘a big mistake’ and then promptly picked a strong side including match-winner Dele Alli, Son Heung-min and Jan Vertonghen.

Fernando Llorente made his first start for Spurs, with Harry Kane an unused sub, defender Juan Foyth was handed a debut and Kieran Trippier played the full 90 minutes and set up Alli’s goal.

The presence of the England midfielder was perhaps understandable as he is suspended for the next two European matches, but Son’s 90-minute shift suggests his next start might come on Tuesday in Cyprus rather than this Saturday lunchtime at West Ham.

More shut-outs for Hammers and Swans

West Ham’s mini-revival continued with a 3-0 win over Bolton in which Marko Arnautovic caught the eye with two assists.

It was a third match undefeated for the Hammers, who have now kept three consecutive clean sheets in all competitions.

Slaven Bilic’s men might struggle to keep that defensive record up when Spurs, who have scored five goals in two away matches, visit on Saturday, but the side is generally in a good place to take advantage of the decent run (SWA bur BHA cry) that follows.

Goals came from Angelo Ogbonna, Diafra Sakho and Arthur Masuaku, while Mark Noble returned from injury to start for the Hammers.

Swansea City have been even more solid defensively – particularly away from home.

Paul Clement’s side won 2-0 at Reading to notch their fourth clean sheet in six matches in all competitions this season, all of which have come on the road.

That is the only downside to an otherwise excellent upcoming schedule for the Swans. They’ll face Watford, West Ham, Huddersfield and Leicester over the next four Gameweeks, with the Hammers encounter the only away match.

Clement mixed and matched his team at the Madejski Stadium, handing Wilfried Bony his first start since rejoining the club, but it was regular starter Alfie Mawson who opened the scoring from a Renato Sanches corner.

The centre-half scored four times last season and if he can rediscover his goal touch in the league, a 5.0 price tag might look rather more appealing given Swansea’s solidity at the back.

Second-half substitute Jordan Ayew wrapped up the win from a Leroy Fer pass.

The Swans teamsheet for the Gameweek 6 meeting with Watford will now be interesting, with Clement clearly lining Bony up for his first Premier League start.

“He is in good shape, he played 60 minutes for the under-23 team last week and now he has played 80 minutes in this game, so I think he is ready to start now in the Premier League.”

It remains to be seen if this impacts on Tammy Abraham or if it’s Ayew who makes way – both were used from the bench on Tuesday.

The alternative could be to pair Bony and Abraham, with Ayew deployed as a number ten – a very attacking option.

Elsewhere…

Josh King scored his first goal of the season, from a Marc Pugh assist, as Bournemouth beat Brighton 1-0 after extra time.

A full 120 minutes was not what either side would have wanted, with the Cherries’ upcoming schedule particularly tough. Three of their next five matches are away from home, including a trip to Spurs, and they also have a visit from Chelsea to look forward to.

Eddie Howe made nine changes, Chris Hughton ten, the Brighton manager handing starts to Jose Izquierdo, Ezequiel Schelotto and Tim Krul.

Meanwhile Howe was able to welcome back both Steve Cook in defence and Junior Stanislas on the flank. Both will be considered for the trip to Everton in Gameweek 6, although the Cherries boss did admit that they were “taking no risks” with Stanislas.

With both Ryan Fraser and Jordan Ibe playing over 100 minutes apiece, Howe’s choice of winger for the Goodison Park visit is in question. It could be that both are benched along with Marc Pugh as Howe reverts to a 3-5-1-1 now that Cook is now back as an option in a back three.

Burnley striker Chris Wood scored his third goal of the season, this time from the penalty spot after Kevin Long was fouled, but the Clarets still ended up losing to Leeds.

Sean Dyche’s men had to come from behind twice, with a 96th minute Robbie Brady free-kick taking the tie into extra-time before Leeds prevailed on penalties.

It’s now two defeats in three home matches for Burnley. Their next four at Turf Moor are HUD WHU NEW and SWA, but their ground is currently not the fortress it was last season.

Bakary Sako scored Crystal Palace’s first goal under Roy Hodgson as they saw off Huddersfield 1-0.

The midfielder converted a corner from Andros Townsend, the winger one of only two players to make the cut from the weekend defeat to Southampton.

Substitute Pape Souare made an emotional return to action after recovering from a car crash that threatened to end his career a year ago. Mamadou Sakho‘s appearance was perhaps more significant from a Fantasy perspective. He was given 70 minutes on his return to the starting line-up and will surely be line to start against Manchester City in Gameweek 6’s early kick-off.

Midfielder Jonathan Hogg made his first start of the season, and Florent Hadergjonaj his competitive debut, for the Terriers – two of nine changes from the side that drew with Leicester.

Stoke City made six changes, but still put out a relatively strong side for the trip to Bristol City.

Peter Crouch, Kurt Zouma, Kevin Wimmer and Darren Fletcher all started as the Potters slumped to a 2-0 defeat.

Stoke have now lost three and drawn one of their four away matches this season. They’ve also conceded six goals in their last three fixtures – hardly ideal preparation for a visit from Chelsea on Saturday, particularly with the on-loan Zouma – one of their stand-out performers this season – unable to face his parent club.

Up until now it has not really mattered, having no City. Now though with the rising ownership it a bit trickier, but it would be just as scary not having Kane or Lukaku

I have the same issue. My team looks perfect for GWs 6-7 and I have no City. Also there is a plan to WC for GW8. And I am not scared, if team looks good overall, City points should be covered somehow.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Is 2017/18 the year to ignore premium priced midfielders?

With so much attention on the excellent points scoring record of expensive defenders and strikers will this be the season where premium midfielders are forgotten.

After last year's 3-5-2 success story do we need to adjust to a new strategy to prosper - with 4-3-3 now the ideal line up?

Or are we just getting head of ourselves - and with a Sanchez, Hazard or Coutinho haul around the corner - will the premium priced midfielders rise up to reclaim a spot in our teams?

Sanchez is just plain overprice at 11.9M yes he can score well, Maybe but for the price he unlikely to ever be mass owned enough to hurt.
Hazard maybe or coutinho, but they are affordable enough if they ever recapture past glories, although the way Salah is looking there not much call for Coutinho

        This is absurd.

Highest points scorer last season, was still scoring after being shifted to LF in Arsenal's 3 at the back formation. If Kane is an option at 12.5, why isn't Sanchez at 11.9?

        1. Stat Sloth
          • 8 Years

Because of uncertainty regarding minutes and whether he is starting matches or not. He has not played very well either, from the non-stat-spectator-view, compared to last season. He also wished to leave the club, and one could also question whether his heart is in the game atm.

11.9 for an uncertain starter Sanchez in an Arsenal side that is struggling more than last season is too much.

(This point is also very much valid for Coutinho. Not so much for Hazzie boy)

            So many assumptions/theories.

He hasn't started games yet, just like Hazard, for lack of match fitness. But of course he's going to be nailed on and play 90 minutes soon. He's their best player who they decided to keep at all costs. I never said we should be buying him right now, but he'll definitely be an option.

He hasn't even started yet and you're already saying he hasn't been playing well?

Suarez wished to leave Liverpool and then had the season of his life when they kept him. These theories are not worth debating at the moment. We'll wait and see.

Dear Sir, how can you accuse me of using assumptions/theories, and hence blowing away the points of my post, when these are all your comments:

              This is absurd (biased statement).

He hasn't started games yet, just like Hazard, for lack of match fitness (how do you know that it is for lack of match fitness? This is a theory)

But of course he's going to be nailed on and play 90 minutes soon (Major assumption, not seeing anything that guarantees your outcome).

He's their best player who they decided to keep at all costs (Biased statement, seeing that at current form/fitness/state we do not know if he is their best player, or that they kept at all costs, the latter point being an assumption)

He hasn't even started yet and you're already saying he hasn't been playing well? (From this comment you seem to suggest that one cannot analysis performance on players who do not start football matches. Sanchez has also started two competitive matches this season, one in the EL and one PL match against Liverpool, and for me, I have watched three of the games in which he has played)

And as for your comparison to Harry Kane, my good man, you gave the answer yourself. You suggest that Sanchez scores, however not as often, as an LF. Kane is a striker, and has for some time been one of the safest bets in the Spurs team.

              Good day to you, sir.

              1. Cok3y5murf
                • 7 Years
                6 years, 6 months ago

So you don't believe he'll definitely be nailed on and play 90 minutes.

You also don't believe he's definitely their best player.

You're definitely in the minority with the above two^ opinions, but you're entitled to your opinion.

So you've judged him from the Liverpool game (his first game and a very one-sided one) and the EL game. My point was that he hasn't played enough minutes for us to have an accurate judgement of his form. But fair enough, you're entitled to your judgement.

I didn't suggest that. I don't have the stats for how well he did at LF, but I remember that it was during the end of last season and almost all of us owned him at the time and even captained him in a DGW, where he delivered.

Sanchez was told he could leave. He had to perform to keep Barcelona interested. Wenger still dreams that Sanchez will re-sign, like Wenger always says about players before they get sold. Sanchez knows he can sign for clubs outside of England in January... that's all he's waiting for.

It's going to be "wait and see" for me :
      - Coutinho and Hazard are still not match fit
      - Sanchez's motivation is still not clear following his aborted move
      - there seems to be a lot of value around the 8-9.5 price bracket with the United pair, Salah, Mane and even further down with Ritchie

None of them are in form at the moment, so the answer is no. But this could change if more than one of them start scoring freely.

On WC 5-2-3 for me as i will take Alonso, Mendy, Kola, Bavies, Jones over Gross/Ritchie. Tempted to go for Ritchie for Mendy..thats my only decision
Cant see me wanting Sanchez if not on pens/unhappy. Will go for Alonso and Azpi when Chelsea fixs ease

Eriksen/Alli are important as they can cover Kane to some extent. I think Salah is the best, or at least the most exciting Liverpool option.

Can't see myself getting Sanchez at that price and with the options Arsenal have in attack, and I think Alonso and/or Morata are better options than Hazard.

Also some great options that started at 8 such as Mkhi and Silva.

I don't think so. It just so happens that injury/transfer speculation led to 3 midfield stalwarts not having a smooth start to the season. Sanchez, Hazard & Coutinho will start delivering points in my opinion, which will lead to us having to rely on a maximum of 2 big hitters in attack.

I might just save my WC beyond GW8 to give Hazard and Sánchez some more time to prove their worth.

It should also shed some light on how essential having three premium forwards will be.

Mane, Salah, Coutinho, Alli, Eriksen, Son, Mkhitaryan and Pogba, good luck with ignoring them, they will hurt you on a weekly basis, Salah three starts, three double digit scores a prime example.

The 4 at the back doesn't need to have an aids riddled midfield to support it.

Jonty, maybe now you can see why Mark wildcareded early, he got on all the key assets before the .1/.2 rises pushed them out of reach, think you owe him an apology 🙂

Tough to predict at the minute but this will probably be the first time I've opted for a cheaper midfield line-up than previous years.

Salah is a must and potentially one of Alli/Eriksen, but after that probably cheaper options from 5.0-7.0 to enable better forwards/defenders.

At the moment, I think only Salah is worth the price at premium point, alongside Eriksen perhaps. The latter is in my team for the foreseeable as 'coverage' for Kane after I ditched him for Aguero.

Short term yes on the SP 10M or above so KDB. Haz and Sanchez
Of those Haz looks to be the best option but will monitor

Of the 9.5 SP down Alli and Erikson still good options, along with the lower Micky and Silva, salah/ Cout /Mane when back,
      3 max then cheaper options

3-4-3 or 4-3-3 depending on form and fixtures looks way forward for now

The main issue is that when they'll start scoring their prices will reach the sky due to the current low ownership. It means that the TV will be very important in the second part of the season.

Where mid price is defined as £8.25ml:
        12 (Sanchez) - 4.5 = 7.5
        (7.5/2)+4.5 = 8.25

Great example, there's so much value in the mid priced mids and wing backs that it feels almost criminal going for three big strikers with holes everywhere else because you're too weak to make a tough decision on which two to pick.

Formation? The formation is irrelevant. Not sure why you've posted that.

Whether it's 3-5-2, 4-3-3 or any other formation, you will only be able to afford 3 premium midfielders in a balanced team.

And no, this is crazy. Midfield is the most valuable part of the game. 2 premium strikers is enough. More than that is poor value for money. 3 premium midfielders is a must.

Yes, Sanchez, Hazard and Coutinho will become options soon. This isn't even a debate, and hardly a hot topic.

Wood's only in there as a placeholder (on a WC). Lukaku and Firmino were being sold so didn't want to risk price drops.

    Eden ACCOUNT CLOSED

Is Hazard worth the investment? Yes he is my names-sake but, what do the stats say?

Chelsea mids have largely been overlooked since Willian and Pedro haven't delivered thus far. He has shown form internationally and, is almost back to full fitness but, is he the right Chelsea choice? Pedro seems most likely to become nailed in the front 3 based on last year (assuming he survives the injury)!

*Figures 2016/17 due to Hazard injury*
No set plays, occasionally shunned to wing back or even benched: Pedro managed attacking returns (G or A) every 112 mins versus, Hazard every 119 mins including penalties!

Pedro is 25% lower in price meaning Hazard must outscore by 25% to provide equal value. Last season Hazard outscored Pedro by 38% (224 to 162) and, only 2 goals came (directly) from penalties. The question over penalty duties is important (and would dent Hazard's appeal) but, for the data supplied, 2 penalties is menial.

Average position shows that Hazard is almost always ahead of Pedro typifying, Conte's 3-5-1-1 tactic when out of possession.

Underlying stats (touches, position of touches, BPS, goal attempts, shot frequency) also point heavily towards Eden however, when divided by time played, the figures are very similar.

Perhaps crucially (for me at least), Pedro's goal involvement was 7% higher than Hazard in 800 minutes less...

I think my decision is made (assuming Pedro is ok) and, Hazard losing penalties would only boost this! Will you be buying in to Conte's midfield this season?

Thanks for this, 86 points away is pitiful! Agreed with poster above my post does miss the captaincy argument -
            intentionally.

My current plan is, to avoid Hazard & Sanchez but non-ownership of Sanchez is much more scary than Hazard - IMO

I don't think so. FFS seems more interested in underlying stats than in FPL points.

I keep my own records of home and away FPL points for leading players.

'Pedro is 25% lower in price meaning Hazard must outscore by 25% to provide equal value'

This is incorrect. Pedro is 25% lower in price and therefore must score 25% less Hazard's total, which is equivalent to Hazard scoring 33% more than Pedro (if you take away 25% and add 25% you don't have the same number).

Yea sorry, word slip. Good job 25% to 33% delta is only 16 points on a 200 season.

"Pedro's goal involvement was 7% higher than Hazard in 800 minutes less..."

The minutes don't matter as it's calculated from the goals scored when on the pitch if I'm not mistaken?

Yes, you're probably right on the involvement calculation.

So Pedro being more involved than Hazard is still true as, Hazard only missed 500 minutes therefore is assumed to be present during Pedro time.

Why would Hazard lose on penalties though?

Also, we aren't factoring the rotation risk we have with Pedro and Willian. Conte has rolled out a 3-5-2 quite often and assuming Morata, Hazard and Kante and another CM (Baka/Cesc) will start each game, that leaves 1 space open in the team for Pedro, Willian and the remaining CM which isn't starting.

We simply don't know yet but, Morata is a risk to PKs. I didn't assume it or base any information on it, simply stated it would dent his prospects.

This season he has rolled 3-5-2 yes, Pedro versus Willian was the battle last season which, Pedro won pretty early on. Willian would have some set pieces and is 1ml cheaper which, would spice things up further.

We do, Morata coming in doesn't change the penalty duties at Chelsea, just like they didn't change when Costa arrived at Chelsea 3 seasons back. You have to assume Hazard is on them until he misses or the manager says otherwise, which hasn't happened yet.

But in fairness, my post covers the 3-5-2 element using Pedro's average position last season...So nothing changes this season tactically IMO. 3-4-3- in possession, 3-5-2 out of possession.

No but Conte likes playing 3 CMs these days and I can't see Hazard and Morata starting in a 3-5-2. Average position wise it doesn't change for Pedro but personnel wise it changes for Chelsea.

Apart from 2015/16 Hazard has been very consistent:
      2016/17 2985 mins 16 goals 9 assists
      2014/15 3373 mins 14 goals 10 assists
      2013/14 2890 mins 14 goals 10 assists
There's 2970 mins left to be played this season, he won't get them all, but you'd probably expect him to deliver about 15 goals and 10 assists. Then it's just the case of whether that's worth 10.5m for someone you'd also happily captain. I'd lean towards yes!

He only scored in 37% of games last season, I'd be disappointed with those captain returns.

        Hazard 16G 9A and Pedro 10G 9A in 800 less minutes for 2.5ml less....It's clear to me!

    Morning folks,

Looking to upgrade my midfield, but who should I draft in...

    A) Salah
    B) Eriksen
    C) De Bruyne
    D) Mkhitaryan

Or any other suggestions gratefully received...!

Was thinking either De Bruyne or Eriksen. The stats aren't vastly different and my only concerns were the Wembley curse and the fact I have Kane but no City cover.
