Scout Squad

The Scout Squad – Gameweek 6

Another Gameweek, another heavy defeat for our panel of Fantasy Football Scout regulars and current Hall of Fame #1 Peter Kouwenberg.

On a more humane website, the curtains would have been drawn around them and an injection administered, but instead they’re back for more whether they like it or not.

This week, they’re hoping Man City assets will help them stop the selectorial rot.

There’s also a lot of agreement that Bosnian landmark Sead Kolasinac needs to be in their team for Gameweek 6, with Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah another to garner expert attention ahead of Liverpool’s Saturday evening trip to Leicester City.

Below is a rundown of their thoughts, and thought processes, around their squad selections. We’ll be back to see who makes the final cut later in the week.

Paul says…

Man City’s home clash with Crystal Palace has to dominate our thinking this week.

I’ve opted for Benjamin Mendy, David Silva and Sergio Aguero, though could easily have added Gabriel Jesus to the mix – the Brazilian is only omitted from my top five forwards for the sake of variety.

Pascal Gross has both the underlying numbers and points output to justify his spot at home to Newcastle. The Brighton schemer has created more chances (eight) than any player in the league over the last two Gameweeks, returning 25 FPL points in the process.

Aaron Ramsey and Sead Kolasinac offer cheaper alternatives to Alexandre Lacazette at home to West Brom. The Baggies are likely to sit tight – their previous two league visits to the Emirates ended in 1-0 and 2-0 losses, so the Frenchman loses out in my frontline.

Instead, I’m turning to Jamie Vardy for Leicester’s encounter against Liverpool. If fit, the Foxes’ frontman looks difficult to omit – he’s scored twice at home to the Reds in each of the last two seasons.

Jonty says…

Manchester City demand representation after scoring 16 league goals this season.

But I have, perhaps controversially, decided against Sergio Aguero, who has already seen his Fantasy Premier League price rise twice since his weekend hat-trick against Watford.

Instead, I’ve opted for his strike partner Gabriel Jesus, who at the Etihad has fired in a shot in the box at twice the rate of Aguero. The Brazilian also has two goals at home to his Argentine team-mate’s one.

Harry Kane should do better away to West Ham than his blank at home to Swansea City at the weekend. I can’t see past those incredible underlying statistics, which we detailed earlier in the week in our Captain Poll article. Even though I realise he may be an unpopular pick among those who captained him against the Swans, his brace in his last away match, at Everton, is still fresh in my mind.

Romelu Lukaku is another essential pick for me. Despite being offloaded by many of Aguero’s new suitors, he has delivered in four out of five fixtures, including goals in both his road trips.

All three will be costly, so I’ve looked to Burnley as a key source of budget picks to ensure we can afford the big guns. Clarets defender Ben Mee (4.5) looks primed for points at both ends of the pitch when Huddersfield drop by thanks to his seven penalty area efforts this season – more than any other defender.

Fellow Claret Robbie Brady’s 13 key passes is also impressive, and ranks him alongside Christian Eriksen, another of my selections, for creativity.

Newcastle’s Matt Ritchie looks another crucial enabler with the potential to score big. His 11 FPL points on the back of two assists last time out was his third consecutive attacking return.

Brighton’s shipping of two goals to Bournemouth last Friday shows how tough my team are finding it in the top flight. It is also worth noting that the Seagulls lost both their Championship encounters with the Magpies last season, conceding four times in total.

Peter says…

Last week’s choices were a mixed bag, with the Spurs and Liverpool treble-ups proving somewhat underwhelming but Jamaal Lascelles, Matt Ritchie and Pascal Groß all doing their bit.

This week will be a big test of the budget and of which star names to leave out – a reality facing most FPL managers at the moment as there are so many in-form options.

The stand-out fixture this week is indisputably Manchester City hosting Palace. The Premier League throws up a few unforeseen results, but surely the only risk here is City’s possible focus on their midweek European match and then a trip to Stamford Bridge, with rotation a possible issue.

FPL points have rained down on the Citizens’ assets, whether coming on as a substitute or only featuring for an hour, so I’m hoping that Sergio Aguero and David Silva avoid too many splinters and get in amongst the points.

Benjamin Mendy also keeps his place in a Manchester City defence which has only been breached twice all season and faces an Eagles team on The Long(est) Run ever without a goal in the opening to a top-flight season.

To a lesser extent, Arsenal also look a decent bet, with two clean sheets since their Anfield humiliation. Sead Kolasinac is becoming something of a cult hero among the FFS community and, in addition to his attacking prowess, faces an West Brom side which has only mustered a couple of shots on target per match in the last few weeks.

Aaron Ramsey looked lively against Chelsea, and although Alaxandre Lacazette didn’t, the fact that the Frenchman has just exited my FPL side is a guarantee that he’ll light up the Emirates this Monday. He takes a spot which will no doubt go to Harry Kane or Alvaro Morata in some of the other Scouts’ selections.

Those are, on paper, the most obvious fixtures to hunt down this week, but my remaining picks are based on a mixture of great form (Manchester United), gut feeling (Burnley and Everton) and all-out exasperation (Spurs).

Mark says…

While there’s every chance I will gamble and go without any Manchester City coverage for their gift of a fixture with Crystal Palace, I couldn’t let it cloud my judgement when it came to the Scout Picks.

Sergio Aguero has to be included and it would seem to be remiss of me not to accompany him with two other members of Pep Guardiola’s squad for the Eagles visit.

Benjamin Mendy is my first choice at the back – I see him as the biggest threat of the two full-backs/wing-backs at Pep’s disposal and recent statistics have backed that theory.

In midfield, I’ve opted for David Silva over Kevin De Bruyne. That’s partly because I’m sulking with the Belgian, partly due to Silva’s ridiculous record against Palace. He’s scored four goals and earned a single assist in just six matches against them. For Silva – a player not renowned for goal scoring – that’s bordering on uncanny.

Elsewhere, I’ve probably courted controversy by backing Harry Kane over Romelu Lukaku. I don’t expect that will help when it comes to Friday’s final selection, but I just feel that he has the better fixture.

I wasn’t impressed with Manchester United without Paul Pogba, and I think Southampton, in Oriol Romeu and Mario Lemina, have two powerful midfielders who could restrict Jose Mourinho’s side to scraps. They’ll likely nick it, but I think Kane can outperform Lukaku this week.

James Tarkowski – with superior baseline in the Bonus Points System – is my differential at the back if Nick Pope isn’t selected in goal. Meanwhile, my omission of both Lukasz Fabianski and Kyle Naughton is explained by Richarlison’s call-up. I fancy the Brazilian to break out with another decent haul at the Liberty Stadium.

The Community Champion

Representing the Community against the Scout Picks in Gameweek will be The UnderGods. This is his sixth season, with 2016/17’s finish of 8,695 his best to date.

The community champion who has the best lead over the Scouts during 2017/18 will win a £100 Amazon voucher (currently we can only offer Amazon.co.uk or Amazon.com vouchers).

Gameweek 5’s champion Gregor achieved victory over the Scouts by a massive 33-point margin – 86 to 53 – with Sergio Aguero among his more prescient picks. He is now the manager to beat in the race for the £100 prize.

From the horses mouth, a direct email from FPL in reply to my question. You can always email them yourself if you don't believe me..

    Free hit chip.

If you play the free hit chip then any transfers you made in the same gw you played the chip are cancelled. Any points hits are also cancelled and your team reverts to the team you had at the start of the gw.

I'm still confused about how team value is affected. I'm guessing you have to spend whatever your team value is when you activate the chip?

Also, based on what they replied with I would assume if you made a profit on an early transfer that week then activated the chip you lose this profit?

I assume when you transfer someone out after the chip is activated it will just be based on the normal SP of that player based on the PP and CP.

I do so wish I had FFS on to read this before playing the stupid thing.
2 free transfers wasted as well.

Thanks FPL what looks to be another ridiculous insert into
      your game.
Perhaps it's my fault for not reading the full details around the rules regarding "Free hit chip" but I assumed it meant you could save yourself four points.
Not lose two free transfers and the price changes.
I find it hard to believe it can be real.
1 stupid chip cancelled to put an even more stupid one in is how it appears.
      At least I know now.

It looks like it is designed for wc or blank gws so you can change your team without destroying it and especially for us fpl nerds that waste so many transfers to try and get a team out for these weeks missing out on hauls by players because they have a blank/no double coming up.

This was reported by a player at start of season??? -

This past gameweek 2 I transferred out lacazette and kolasinac and bought in lukaku and hegazi. I then decided to play my free hit (I wasn't planning too but didn't realise it was no reversable)

I have however been charged a 4 point hit in gameweek 2 and remain with lacazette and kolasinac for gameweek 3.

Cheers WR, bit late to this party. So one can't keep any players one brings in, even if one wants to. So anyone bringing in Aguero at the start of this week, will have him leave their team for gw7, and they'll have to pay 11.7 to bring him back in again, and not the 11.4 they paid for gw6. Interesting. & long winded.

I've seen people on here with Kane and Lukaku absolutely butchering their teams just to fit Aguero... As a captain this week, Kane (whu) could easily outscore Aguero (CPL) - Kane is likely to get more minutes and is arguably equally explosive if not more. Crazy stuff.

Spurs have been lacklustre this season, and City are on fire. I'm guessing those who have made the move are not looking for immediate returns, but are looking long term.

Away from home Spurs have been rampant. Kane (whu, hud) will outscore Aguero (CPL,che) imo.

I wouldn't say rampant, more just what in accordance to the Spurs we expect. They struggled to break down Necastle till the red card, and Everton right now are piss poor. I'm not saying Kane wont haul, but I think there is more chance Kun does this weekend. Most would look beyond 2 fixtures as well, and if Kun does outscore Kane again this weekend, then there could be a .4-.5 price swing involved in not doing and doing the transfer

If you're looking beyond that STK in GW 8 is an ideal spot for rotation - sandwiched right after the international break and right before the Champions league game. I'm not sure Aguero starts that one.

Kane & Lukaku (and Tammy!) here. I'm holding as a punt could easily backfire... just as much as it could pay off.

I am a bit scared of having no City. Had I known Silva would be rested today, I might have done Mkhi > Silva earlier this week - but sadly priced out now.

If my team suffers due to a stellar City performance, I'll just have to shuffle with 2FTs or a WC!

I'd argue that Kane's are better. And before you bring up the big chances stat - I find it hard to believe that chance Kane had against Swansea didn't go down as a big chance 😆

Big chances is a significant factor, but the huge increase in headed goal attempts at Wembley is even more compelling.

I think that is a classic case of overthinking. A week ago he put a brace past Dortmund at the same venue. He's a proven goal scorer.

I trust Paul's analysis. I was shocked by what he unearthed. Spurs and Kane were unreal and absolutely immense at White Hart Lane last season. Take that away or even water it down somewhat and you have to completely reassess Spurs's premium attackers.

Their next two are against the lesser teams away from home. Then they face a Bournemouth side at home who only know one way to play - all out attack. I can't see the sudden urge to get rid of a proven goalscorer.

Yes, the headed goal thing is a big one. And the one stat that matters is goals, and Kun is king there.

The chance vs Swans were he hit cross bar from 5 yards out was another reminder that he is not as good finisher as last season. If you miss such chances in a team which looks likely to challenge for 4th place at best this season then you really need to assess at 12.5mn

I don't care what others do with their teams, I have had enough trouble this week deciding what to do with mine.

The end result is that I am keeping Kane and Lukaku. But one reason was that I didn't expect both Aguero and Jesus to start this weekend and with Jesus having played 90 tonight it looks like Aguero will certainly start against Palace. That's a shame. I'd have loved him to get a 1-point cameo.

Anyway, there it is. I have taken a longer term perspective but know well that I could get caned this weekend. If so, so be it. It's also possible to get caned by taking Lukaku or Kane out for Aguero.

I think that front 3 is fundamentally flawed. But if those are the 3 strikers you want then the rest looks pretty well designed. Not sure I'd want Davies, though; Spurs apparently expect Rose back after the international break (so in GW8). He may not immediately displace Davies but it's only a matter of time before the rotation kicks in.

I also think you will require some Chelsea attack soon. But maybe you could get around both by saving a FT so you could do Davies to Wimmer and Salah to Hazard in GW9.

OK then. Take a look at Chelsea's fixtures from GW9 to GW27. They are astonishingly good, only 3 really tricky games out of 19 (4 if you count Everton away). In 6 or 7 of those 19 weeks they will probably offer the best captaincy option in terms of fixture.

Chelsea aren't much in people's minds right now but they will be soon enough. Personally I can't imagine going into that long run (much of which occurs when the CL rotation pressure is out of the way) without either Hazard or Morata.

If Krisbee is wildcarding now, one has to assume that he won't wildcard again before GW27 so he needs to look at least that far ahead. GW27 is the LC Final if I remember right so the start of the DGW/BGW season. I would therefore advise him to have an idea on how he will incorporate a Chelsea attacker. And did so advise him.

If he is set on 3 huge strikers then that cuts Morata out. That means Hazard. That means for Salah. That's why I offered that consideration. I don't say that Salah is a bad player to have. I do say that having a key Chelsea attacker will be more important. Who knows, maybe it will make him re-consider his front 3 and look at downgrading one to Morata. Alerting him to Chelsea was the main thing I wanted to do.

From 8 to 13 inclusive Chelsea have 4 away and 2 home with one of the home being man Utd. The four away include wba and liv (who have an excellent record v the big teams under klopp) as well as bou and cpa who by then could well be decent at home again. I think we can possibky leave off Chelsea attack until gw14 especially if we are looking at hazard who doesn't score particularly well away from home.

Buying whoever exploded last week is mandatory here. 😉

No worries. Next week, Sanchez or Hazard will be the new bandwagon.

The thing is no one cared about Aguero before his hattrick. It's not like we didn't know he was capable of that. Now they're rushing to get him in for Lukaku or Kane who are equally as capable in the next two fixtures. At least it's safe to say Aguero's ceiling is low in the Chelsea game.

Aguero has 6 in 9 against Chelsea, ceiling might be low but he's scored there last year and does well in big games.

Ruth, agree about Chelsea, planning to add to Alonso in the next few weeks, don't think I'll be losing Salah myself but adding two more is a priority.

Pogba still 18.5% owned. How much will his price drop? There are some dead teams for sure owning him. Is it possible he drops lower than 8.0=

Makes zero sense. Willian will probably start, Jesus>Aguero is sideways.

        Will you captain Jesus?
        Would you captain Aguero?

        Therein lies the answer.

      Elliot
      Jones - Cedric - Alonso
      Richarlison - Mkhitaryan - Salah - Ramsey
      Morata - Lukaku - Firmino

      Foster, Hegazi, Naughton, Carroll

Firmino + Alonso -> Aguero + Mbemba for free?
