Scout Squad

The Scout Squad – Gameweek 6

Another Gameweek, another heavy defeat for our panel of Fantasy Football Scout regulars and current Hall of Fame #1 Peter Kouwenberg.

On a more humane website, the curtains would have been drawn around them and an injection administered, but instead they’re back for more whether they like it or not.

This week, they’re hoping Man City assets will help them stop the selectorial rot.

There’s also a lot of agreement that Bosnian landmark Sead Kolasinac needs to be in their team for Gameweek 6, with Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah another to garner expert attention ahead of Liverpool’s Saturday evening trip to Leicester City.

Below is a rundown of their thoughts, and thought processes, around their squad selections. We’ll be back to see who makes the final cut later in the week.

Paul says…

Man City’s home clash with Crystal Palace has to dominate our thinking this week.

I’ve opted for Benjamin Mendy, David Silva and Sergio Aguero, though could easily have added Gabriel Jesus to the mix – the Brazilian is only omitted from my top five forwards for the sake of variety.

Pascal Gross has both the underlying numbers and points output to justify his spot at home to Newcastle. The Brighton schemer has created more chances (eight) than any player in the league over the last two Gameweeks, returning 25 FPL points in the process.

Aaron Ramsey and Sead Kolasinac offer cheaper alternatives to Alexandre Lacazette at home to West Brom. The Baggies are likely to sit tight – their previous two league visits to the Emirates ended in 1-0 and 2-0 losses, so the Frenchman loses out in my frontline.

Instead, I’m turning to Jamie Vardy for Leicester’s encounter against Liverpool. If fit, the Foxes’ frontman looks difficult to omit – he’s scored twice at home to the Reds in each of the last two seasons.

Jonty says…

Manchester City demand representation after scoring 16 league goals this season.

But I have, perhaps controversially, decided against Sergio Aguero, who has already seen his Fantasy Premier League price rise twice since his weekend hat-trick against Watford.

Instead, I’ve opted for his strike partner Gabriel Jesus, who at the Etihad has fired in a shot in the box at twice the rate of Aguero. The Brazilian also has two goals at home to his Argentine team-mate’s one.

Harry Kane should do better away to West Ham than his blank at home to Swansea City at the weekend. I can’t see past those incredible underlying statistics, which we detailed earlier in the week in our Captain Poll article. Even though I realise he may be an unpopular pick among those who captained him against the Swans, his brace in his last away match, at Everton, is still fresh in my mind.

Romelu Lukaku is another essential pick for me. Despite being offloaded by many of Aguero’s new suitors, he has delivered in four out of five fixtures, including goals in both his road trips.

All three will be costly, so I’ve looked to Burnley as a key source of budget picks to ensure we can afford the big guns. Clarets defender Ben Mee (4.5) looks primed for points at both ends of the pitch when Huddersfield drop by thanks to his seven penalty area efforts this season – more than any other defender.

Fellow Claret Robbie Brady’s 13 key passes is also impressive, and ranks him alongside Christian Eriksen, another of my selections, for creativity.

Newcastle’s Matt Ritchie looks another crucial enabler with the potential to score big. His 11 FPL points on the back of two assists last time out was his third consecutive attacking return.

Brighton’s shipping of two goals to Bournemouth last Friday shows how tough my team are finding it in the top flight. It is also worth noting that the Seagulls lost both their Championship encounters with the Magpies last season, conceding four times in total.

Peter says…

Last week’s choices were a mixed bag, with the Spurs and Liverpool treble-ups proving somewhat underwhelming but Jamaal Lascelles, Matt Ritchie and Pascal Groß all doing their bit.

This week will be a big test of the budget and of which star names to leave out – a reality facing most FPL managers at the moment as there are so many in-form options.

The stand-out fixture this week is indisputably Manchester City hosting Palace. The Premier League throws up a few unforeseen results, but surely the only risk here is City’s possible focus on their midweek European match and then a trip to Stamford Bridge, with rotation a possible issue.

FPL points have rained down on the Citizens’ assets, whether coming on as a substitute or only featuring for an hour, so I’m hoping that Sergio Aguero and David Silva avoid too many splinters and get in amongst the points.

Benjamin Mendy also keeps his place in a Manchester City defence which has only been breached twice all season and faces an Eagles team on The Long(est) Run ever without a goal in the opening to a top-flight season.

To a lesser extent, Arsenal also look a decent bet, with two clean sheets since their Anfield humiliation. Sead Kolasinac is becoming something of a cult hero among the FFS community and, in addition to his attacking prowess, faces an West Brom side which has only mustered a couple of shots on target per match in the last few weeks.

Aaron Ramsey looked lively against Chelsea, and although Alaxandre Lacazette didn’t, the fact that the Frenchman has just exited my FPL side is a guarantee that he’ll light up the Emirates this Monday. He takes a spot which will no doubt go to Harry Kane or Alvaro Morata in some of the other Scouts’ selections.

Those are, on paper, the most obvious fixtures to hunt down this week, but my remaining picks are based on a mixture of great form (Manchester United), gut feeling (Burnley and Everton) and all-out exasperation (Spurs).

Mark says…

While there’s every chance I will gamble and go without any Manchester City coverage for their gift of a fixture with Crystal Palace, I couldn’t let it cloud my judgement when it came to the Scout Picks.

Sergio Aguero has to be included and it would seem to be remiss of me not to accompany him with two other members of Pep Guardiola’s squad for the Eagles visit.

Benjamin Mendy is my first choice at the back – I see him as the biggest threat of the two full-backs/wing-backs at Pep’s disposal and recent statistics have backed that theory.

In midfield, I’ve opted for David Silva over Kevin De Bruyne. That’s partly because I’m sulking with the Belgian, partly due to Silva’s ridiculous record against Palace. He’s scored four goals and earned a single assist in just six matches against them. For Silva – a player not renowned for goal scoring – that’s bordering on uncanny.

Elsewhere, I’ve probably courted controversy by backing Harry Kane over Romelu Lukaku. I don’t expect that will help when it comes to Friday’s final selection, but I just feel that he has the better fixture.

I wasn’t impressed with Manchester United without Paul Pogba, and I think Southampton, in Oriol Romeu and Mario Lemina, have two powerful midfielders who could restrict Jose Mourinho’s side to scraps. They’ll likely nick it, but I think Kane can outperform Lukaku this week.

James Tarkowski – with superior baseline in the Bonus Points System – is my differential at the back if Nick Pope isn’t selected in goal. Meanwhile, my omission of both Lukasz Fabianski and Kyle Naughton is explained by Richarlison’s call-up. I fancy the Brazilian to break out with another decent haul at the Liberty Stadium.

The Community Champion

Representing the Community against the Scout Picks in Gameweek will be The UnderGods. This is his sixth season, with 2016/17’s finish of 8,695 his best to date.

The community champion who has the best lead over the Scouts during 2017/18 will win a £100 Amazon voucher (currently we can only offer Amazon.co.uk or Amazon.com vouchers).

Gameweek 5’s champion Gregor achieved victory over the Scouts by a massive 33-point margin – 86 to 53 – with Sergio Aguero among his more prescient picks. He is now the manager to beat in the race for the £100 prize.

    Ok I have 3 options

    1. Keep Alonso, Erikson and Joselu

    2. Above out for Mee, Ritchie and Aguero.

    3. Again swap number 1 for Kola, Ritchie and Jesus.

    Both 2 and 3 are a 8 point hit.

Long term 6-10 weeks which 3 score more points. Im thinking 2 but only just from 1.

    Thoughts?

Number 2 leaves 0.3 in bank so could save transfer and do them for a minus 4 next week should Aguero go nuts again.

Save and walk away is a sensible approach.

I've seen people on here with Kane and Lukaku absolutely butchering their teams just to fit Aguero... As a captain this week, Kane (SWA) could easily outscore Aguero (wat) - Kane is likely to get more minutes and is arguably equally explosive if not more. Crazy stuff.

Seems as the fence-sitting scoutcast chaps won't give you a straight answer on Aguero, I will.

I've just used the comparison tool and Aguero blows Kane, Lukaku and Jesus out of the water. It's not even close.

You won't get a straight yes or no answer from the scoutcast suits. But you will get one from the Virg.

    Get Aguero.

The scoutcast is crying out for some straight shooting. It's so frustrating. People are desperate for an answer and they just get waffle, talking around the subject.

See below. That's actually nonsense because I catergorically summed it up by saying that, by the end of the cast, none of us were getting Aguero.

We talked about each of our transfers in turn. How was that not conclusive?

No idea if 48-hours later things have changed but, at the time, we did waffle but we also gave our stance.

Ah yes. I admire him for it.

Me, I'm still looking at the next two GW's rather than one and backing Kane and Lukaku to keep pace with Aguero over those two matches.

If I can get past GW6, then I don't believe I'll recruit City for GW7 and Chelsea, but I will likely bank my GW7 transfer to give me the option going into GW8.

By then I'll have more data and two more eye tests on Kane and Lukaku.

Just pick a side. As long as it's based on sound reasoning, logic and reliable data, that's all anyone can ask.

Hold on. I'm pretty I did a round-up show of hands for everyone on the show and we all said that none of us were getting Aguero.

No idea if that's still the case but I'm still sticking to that for now.

I posted about this earlier and the feeling amongst the community was that the issue was "talked around" with no firm conclusion.

Everyone was desperate for this question ...

            http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2017/09/19/line-up-lessons-gameweek-5-part-one/?hc_page=1#hc_comment_16522207

.... to be clearly answered on the scoutcast.

I know it's a tough one, but I think a lot of people tuned in for help with this.

              "Feeling amongst the community"

Is that based on this post - http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2017/09/20/frisking-the-fixtures-gameweek-6-the-strong-4/?hc_page=11#hc_comment_16531376

One person mentioned fence, 2 people told you what we all decided. Hardly the feeling among the community.

We talked over reasons why or why not to dump and then said whether we would be doing it. We clearly stated not for Lukaku but yes were more up in the air over Kane. The fact we don't fancy that transfer gives you your answer.

This is another clear attempt to score points by having a go, it's what you do. One minute you're kissing arse, the next you're having a go. It's the reason myself and others have you muted on Twitter, just getting bored of it.

Unfortunately there's no mute function on FFS yet.

I refuse to get personal and I won't say anything negative about you, Andy.

I just want someone to pick a side on the scoutcast and stick to it.

Don't say ... on one hand this, on the other hand that.

Carefully weigh up both sides of the argument, analyse all the data and come down completely on one side.

It's frustrating. Not just with the Aguero question; but with most big questions during most gameweeks.

Ah but, making an FPL decision the way you describe is not always the case for everyone ... I am on a WC and can not honestly say what my team will be tomorrow ... 'picking and sticking' simply doesn't work like that for most - and certainly not just because FPLV wants it to fit into his nice box

Surely you make your own mind up based on the resources at hand, one being a discussion on a podcast between experienced FF managers. Who all gave their thoughts quite clearly. Personally I've wildcarded this week and dropped lukaku for Kun to go along with Kane. Time will tell, the key thing is, its opinion based on several resources.

This was a bit harsh so I do apologize, genuinely. The seemingly split personality thing is tiring to deal with though.

As for the questions - I think we generally answer the questions with our actions/transfers if nothing else. I feel we spent more than enough time and gave answers on Aguero.

At some point the manager has to make their own decision.

Cheers, Andy. I appreciate that. No apology necessary, though.

I'm genuinely not trying to be a dick; I love playing FPL and I'm a huge fan of FFS and all the scoutcast guys. But I don't always agree with everything that's said. I think people should be allowed to voice their disagreement on here. I've been trying recently to cut back on the banter and disagree respectfully. I'm sorry if I've not achieved this.

It's one thing for me to be a keyboard warrior and demand that you all 'pick a side' but it must be hard to be certain about anything in front of 35,000 people watching. If you say "I'm 100% certain - everyone should buy Aguero" and he blanks, then people will pounce and ridicule. I get that.

People can disagree, thats definitely not a problem, I do it all the time.

Doing the scoutcast so early in the week also helps towards some indecision because you're still weighing things up, but I do feel we gave enough on Aguero.

I even said hes not essential to answer the question posed to me and that Lukaku to Aguero was a mistake.

But yes I agree that I was more hesitant about Kane because I am. My actions come Friday will fully answer.

Most of us that have stopped posting on FFS are using this button to filter the nonsense that get posted here.

I know. But you can look at the data, read everything you can get your hands on, listen to all the different podcasts and put forward a firm position and firmly plant your flag on one side of the argument. Too many answers try to please both sides of the argument ... in case they get proven wrong after the games have all been played.

They did pick a side. They decided it wasn't worth the risk of taking the move with Kane's fixtures, and that they were going to be a little more patient.

Don't understand how you can't see that.

Do you think Pep prioritises the PL or the CL?
He could easily roll the CPL game with Sterling and Sane or Jesus with Aguero being subbed early

All the big hitters are in CL action and could be rotated. Plus there is a theory that Pep only rotated so much last season because he wasn't happy with his players. This season he is much happier with his players and will rotate less.

Yeah I think that's fair enough. I still think Jesus is better long term as I still feel he is more secure. Would you help? I'm thinking Lukaku to Aguero now? Other options require hits and losing players like Alli and Firmino

Mate, with how much you've sold yourself over Aguero, I don't think anyone can help you. You will not be convinced a minute before the deadline, nor will you be convinced after the deadline.

I'm sold on Aguero yes. Simply trying to figure out the best way to get him in.

I know, but to an extent that you are willing to lose anyone from your team to get him in only adds to confusion. Good luck!

No maybe I wasn't clear earlier. I can do Lukaku out for no hit. Or Firmino and Alli out for a hit. Those are my two possibles.

Fair enough. Lukaku is the best striker in the game at the moment, only a fool would sell him right now! Agree with you on the Scoutcast really in that Kane is the one to sell for Kun rather than Kaku.

Who would you rather this week btw - Mendy or Walker?

Probably but mainly because I'll have to wait until Friday to stream and I want to hear press conferences.

Won't be exciting though, Daniels to Jones looks on the cards.

Very tempted by Kane to Aguero but worried it will backfire

Is it time to boot out Mkhitaryan for Silva?

Mickey is far more advanced in general but the impact of no Pogba and a stiffening of fixtures, allied with City's kind fixture run, makes Silva an attractive alternative. Or then again, Mkh just scored his first goal and he could go on an even better run.

    Thoughts?

B is the better move of the 2.

If I were selling one of Lukaku or Kane it would be Kane right now. Lukaku is cheaper, and is in better form and looks certain for a goal a week. Kane might be essential again sooner rather than later but if either one has to make way for Kun it's Kane for me imo.

We can all look at stats and theories until the cows come home but why don't we just conceed that Kane, Kun and Lukaku can score big on any given day.

Pick two or pick all three and stick.

Agreed. I'm going with all three for the next few weeks. The way I look at it is I'll either score lots of points or it will become clear who to drop, so it's sort of win-win...

Currently on WC and rarely ever ask for advice but all help appreciated as never been so unsure of moves in my 6 years playing this game

    Elliot Foster
    Kola Davies Jones Mee Mbemba
    Salah Mikhi Atsu Carroll King
    Aguero Kane Lukaku

    0.0m in the bank
    Will play 4-3-3

I have never played 4 at the back regularly in this game and such a weak midfield scares me.

Looks alright to me with those 3 up top. Wouldn't bother with Foster tho. Fabianski a better option. Maybe even Krul if you fancy a gamble and frees up 0.5 which allows you to get someone better than King.

Also Mee should drop before the deadline (which gives you a handy 0.1) so take him out your team for now.
