Scout Notes – Gameweek 6 – Sunday

A Tomer Hemed winner reminds us all of the delights of a budget third striker as Newcastle United’s well-owned goalkeeper and defenders fail to keep out Brighton at the Amex Stadium.

Here are the notes from Sunday’s one and only match.

Hemed the hero, for now

The 2017/18 Fantasy Premier League season is in danger of leaving us dazed and confused before October has even had the chance to turn up.

We started the campaign looking at top-performing midfielders, just like last year, to lead the way.

Now we think premium-priced forwards are the way to go, with budget midfielders to provide ballast and some decent returns now and again.

But Sunday’s match between Brighton and Newcastle threw even that idea into question, as the Seagulls’ Tomer Hemed – an archetypal cheap third striker if ever there was one – delivered a nine-point performance to prove that fine hauls from forwards don’t always have to come with a budget-busting price tag attached.

Dale Stephens provided the assist for the Israeli, who has two goals and an assist from his last three starts, making the 2.8%-owned forward a tidy differential indeed.

He’s been involved in three of Brighton’s four home goals this season and is something of a talisman at the Amex – the Seagulls have won 13 and drawn one of the 14 matches in which he’s scored on home turf.

Indeed, going back further, Hemed has now been involved in 20 goals in his last 23 starts from Brighton at the Amex, producing 15 goals and five assists.

But the striker could go from hero to villain in a matter of days. Hemed was involved in an “incident” with Newcastle’s DeAndre Yedlin late on, which appeared to show the striker stamp on the Magpies defender.

Accidental or otherwise, the incident could be reviewed by the FA having been apparently missed by referee Andre Marriner.

Should the FA issue a retrospective charge of violent conduct, Hemed will face a three-match ban. That would rule him out of fixtures with Arsenal, Everton and West Ham United. We would hope to have confirmation in the next 24 hours, with Marriner’s report set to be processed today.

So far, only 13,000 have invested in Hemed following Sunday’s points, with a potential ban no doubt a factor in the lukewarm interest to this point.

Should he sit out the next three, Chris Hughton’s options in attack would be severely limited. Glenn Murray failed to make the squad on Sunday as he struggles for fitness, although Izzy Brown returned from injury to make the bench and could be an option. He is classed as a 5.3 FPL midfielder.

Brighton’s 1-0 win over Newcastle made it back-to-back victories at home and seven of their next eight matches on the south coast – EVE SOT STK CRY BUR WAT BOU – offer the potential for good returns from their defensive assets as well, with only a Gameweek 15 visit from Liverpool likely to be a step too far for a backline of players available at around the 4.5 mark.

They certainly have some previous for parsimony at home, albeit in the Championship, as they kept 12 clean sheets and conceded just 14 goals in 23 matches last term.

Newcastle huffed and puffed but couldn’t breakdown a resilient Brighton, which derailed a number of Gameweek 6 bandwagons.

Jamaal Lacelles (10.1%) ended up with one point after being yellow carded, while Matt Ritchie, Chancel Mbemba and Christian Atsu had earned a combined 783,000+ transfers-in for the Gameweek, only to sell their new owners short.

Even keeper Rob Elliot, a 23.8%-owned budget pick at 4.1, let us down, failing to claim a save point for only the second time this season, although he was also the most benched player (808,000) of Gameweek 6.

There should be better defensive days to come for the Geordies – of the 18 teams to have played six times, only the two Manchester clubs have allowed fewer shots in the box than Newcastle, even though they’ve kept just two clean sheets.

And Rafa Benitez’s men still have six decent matches in the next eight. A visit from Liverpool next week and a Gameweek 12 trip to Man United aside, Newcastle will face: sot CRY bur BOU wat WBA.

Feel like Azpi is the better option based on the last few GWs, or a city defender, but you're right - patience is a virtue.

  7. GWK 7 Free Hit Chip

    Morning all 🙂

I think GW7 offers the first strategic opportunity to use the Free Hit chip. I know this chip has been earmarked for the blank gameweeks, and I'd maintain this is still where it offers the most benefit, but this gameweek could also be fruitful. Here's why.

Two in-form teams play each other in GW7; Chelsea at home to Man City. The majority of fantasy teams will have 3 or more assets from these two sides; Aguero, D.Silva, KdB, Walker/Otamendi, Morata, and Alonso are all highly owned.

The key to this is your view of how this match will turn out. Many thought Chelsea would put Arsenal to the sword in GW4 but that ended 0-0 in a game of few genuine chances. With David Luiz suspended, will Chelsea be able to contain a Man City side that have scored 5 or more in each of their last 3 PL games? I don't know, but they are equipped to shut up shop if Conte so desires.

So, for the sake of this post, let's assume a cagey 1-1. With this result, you'd be looking at an average-to-low gameweek score if you're packing Chelsea and Man City players. But you don't want to get rid because the next 3 gameweeks looks like this:

    Chelsea: cpl, WAT, bou
    Man City: STK, BUR, wba

An enviable glance over at their PL rivals sees Man Utd host Crystal Palace and Spurs travel to Huddersfield. While Huddersfield have been sound defensively this season, it would be an understatement of the century to say the same can't be said of Crystal Palace. Truth be told, both those fixtures are captaincy material for Lukaku and Kane owners.

Personally, I'm the proud owner of Aguero, Morata and D.Silva. I could simply use a FT to switch out Aguero for Lukaku and flip back the following week. As the Free Hit Chip effectively uses a FT (you wouldn't have 2 FT's going into GW8 if you played it), then I'd only be using/wasting one FT in switching Lukaku back to Aguero. That is a viable option, for sure.

It's also worth mentioning that this match follows midweek Champions League fixtures where Man City host Shakhtar Donetsk and Chelsea travel to Athletico Madrid. Man Utd and Spurs also have Champions League matches, so it may well prove tricky to predict the line-ups for next weekend. The Free Hit Chip offers a benefit here also as we'll have the chance to judge those players that are rested or taken off early midweek and stand a better chance of starting at the weekend. In itself, playing 90 minutes midweek isn't justification to sell a player, but temporarily for one game with the Free Hit Chip, has its merits.

If Morata and Aguero are rested in the Champions League - as they were a fortnight ago - I will stick and see how they get on, but any other scenario, or if you have 4 or 5 Chelsea and Man City players, then I think the Free Hit chip is worthy of consideration.

    TL;DR - GW6 - Aguero(che) + Morata(MCI) vs Lukaku(cpl) + Kane(hud)

P.S. You may also shoehorn Alexis Sanchez in for Brighton at home if he explodes vs West Brom tonight 😉

Thanks Mark... I proof read it but didn't twig the GW numbers were wrong, typical.

I'd like to give the FHC a try, but I've a feeling Aguero and maybe Morata (less so, given the Spanish connection) will be rested midweek. I have Sanchez and Kolasinac in my team already, which would be another upside of playing the FHC when Arsenal are home to Brighton.

I did do it - Brought in among others Aguero (C), Sane, Morata (good) and KDB, Alonso (bad). I just saw City v Palace and a defence dead Stoke v Chelsea as too good to pass up.

72 so far with the 2 Arsenal wing-backs to go. However the fact that Kane, Lukaku, Silva and Jones from my existing team did well meant that it was not as effective as it could have been.

You can argue it strategically. But it is all based on a cagey 1-1. Last season, Chelsea beat Man City 2-1 and 3-1 home and away respectively.

Ultimately, it is a gamble. However, shipping a player who will not play (because his team has no fixture, rather than because he is a rotation risk), for a guy who's team has a game that week, is a very limited risk

That is true. Maybe the gamble looks more desirable if your team doesn't have Lukaku and/or Kane?

Aguero has ten in 15 v Chelsea....looks a good match for him.
Morata unknown quantity but Hazard eased two past them in this fixture last season.

Often the on paper tough games are the highest scoring.

If I had Morata or Aguero I'd certainly be playing them this week.

Yes, it could easily backfire 🙂 On paper, Lukaku + Kane (+ Sanchez or Lacazette maybe?) vs Aguero + Morata + cheapie, could be a better use of the Free Hit Chip than loading up on teams that have been knocked out of the FA Cup?

Sorry but I'm going to disagree strongly.
I find this very uninviting for a free chip.
Main reason, giving your reasons for playing the chip is that apart from the ManU game, I don't see anything to temp me in the other games thus negating the need or advantage of playing the card.
Having Chel v Citeh playing each other is not a major disadvantage in itself certainly not for playing the chip - after all we did know this fixture was looming and some of us may have planned accordingly. Even without planning for this fixture it may still yield reasonable returns.

The above 3 posts, wow, self righteous much??

As clearly laid out in my post, this is an option for those with Chelsea and Man City attacking players, who may consider ONLY this coming GW's fixture to be unfavourable. For those going without Morata and/or Aguero (plus mids, defs), clearly this doesn't apply to you.

There are different ways to play this game. Some will play the game patiently and have Kane from GW1 and others will be more aggressive and bring players in according to fixture and form. There's more risk in the latter approach but it is no less viable. For the latter crowd trying to maximise their points every week rather than over a longer period, the FHC could pay off handsomely if Chelsea - Man City is a tight affair.

Even if the score is 1-1, I would still be quite happy with goals for Kun and Morata and an assist from Azpilicueta!

Well done for at least considering it. Every GW is a potential free hit GW. I think too many people have already decided to use it for the big blank or a small DGW but there are more creative options.

Not for me this week though. Chelsea vs City isn't usually a low scoring game. In fact at least 3 goals have been scored in each of the last 5 meetings.

Cheers.. If Morata and Aguero come through the CL fixtures unscathed then I'll be hoping there's a few goals in the game and I won't be playing the chip.

Would be a nice twist if Sanchez gets on the score sheet tonight and throws another big hitting option into the middle.

For sure... a blank GW when the FA Cup ties are being played and some teams have their fixtures postponed, appears the perfect time to play this chip. I was just trying to find alternative uses outside of that.

Morata will likely win the golden boot this season, far better than Lukaku and much more complete than Kane, and not in risk for rotation neither does he get injured often.
Take from that what you will 🙂

      1. Pep says
        • 8 Years

Given his Gametime at Madrid, it's good he hasn't an injury record but he hasn't faced the English Christmas schedule so time will on that one.

How is he more complete than Kane? Kane can shoot from literally anywhere, great I can the air and always seems to be developing and getting more confident.

Lukaku and Kane aren't at risk of rotation either

Kane can't dribble really and isn't as quick as Morata. Morata also has an eye for assisting.
Rotation was mentioned for Aguero/Jesus as the other two "big-hitters"
Morata was one of the top goalscorers in Spain and he was a squad player in Madrid, and he wasn't the focal point of their attack, which in Chelsea he will be until Hazard returns.. and then its the two of them.

1.5m OR - tragic start this season. Feels like it's going to be hard to move up as the highly owned players keep on scoring/assisting/cleansheeting. Desperately need some new big hitters to join the party and shake things up, i.e. Hazard, Sanchez.
