Top 5 Career Hall Of Fame – Gameweek 6 Review

The Top Five enjoyed their best gameweek of the season so far with green arrows all round.

Current Live Hall of Fame leader Jay Egersdorff played his wildcard – I’ll take a detailed look at that later on, and Graeme Sumner (aka Gregor) moved back into the top 2m for the first time since Gameweek 1 and is now up to 1,840,583. Gameweek 6’s highest scorer was  Matthew Jones (aka Numb) but after a disastrous start to his campaign he is still the only Top Five manager to currently languish outside the top 2m, at 2,137,659.

This article focuses on the moves and strategies employed by the five elite managers who grace the upper echelons of this site’s Career Hall of Fame. Between them these managers have achieved nine top 1,000 finishes in the past three seasons and have ended up in the top 10,000 a whopping 37 times over the course of their FPL careers.

To help out I have also deployed Fusen’s FPL Statistico tool to gain an extra insight into their thinking.

Matthew achieved his first top 1m Gameweek rank of the season (399,202). He played a 4-3-3 formation with only Liverpool’s Roberto Firmino failing to deliver any attacking returns from his front 6. At the back Manchester United’s Phil Jones and Brighton’s Lewis Dunk contributed clean sheets to his Gameweek score of 80.

Career HoF number one Peter Kouwenberg (aka My Pretty Pony) and number five Mark Sutherns (aka Mark) edged towards the top 1m. Both managers fielded Tottenham’s Dele Alli and Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah in their starting line-ups. The duo weighed in with two assists and a goal between them helping Peter and Mark to scores of over 70 points in Gameweek 6.

Alli is currently the preferred Spurs midfield asset. His Champions League ban should mean he is guaranteed Premier League pitch time as he won’t be available in Europe until the visit of Real Madrid on  1 November.

CAPTAIN

The armband decision was split between Tottenham’s Harry Kane and Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero. The Argentine’s Gameweek 5 hat-trick and an enticing Gameweek 6 home match against Crystal Palace proved too much to resist for managers Peter, Graeme and Jay.

ManagerPeterGraemeJayMatthewMarkAve. (c) pointsAs % of score

Yet it was the England man who was the highest scorer in Gameweek 6. With his August drought firmly behind him, two goals and three bonus points against The Hammers narrowly pipped Aguero’s 11 point return.

So far this season four different players have been handed the armband by our Top Five. Manchester United’s Romelu Lukaku is the most popular, having been chosen 43% of the time, followed by Kane on 37%.

Lukaku has proved the more reliable choice averaging 16.7 points when chosen as captain compared to Kane’s 6.9 points.

Aguero and Arsenal’s Alexandre Lacazette have both been chosen 10% of the time, averaging 22 and 12 points respectively. This information is displayed in the graphic below:

I’ve mentioned this before but the pattern of Lukaku returning more points than Kane when chosen as captain is a similar story to last season. Chosen 9% of the time in 2016/17 to Lukaku’s 11%, the Spurs frontman averaged 13 points compared to 20.7 points from his Red Devils’ counterpart.

Heading into Gameweek 7 we once again find ourselves torn between the two. We’ve been here before, as recently as Gameweek 3 when both players disappointed – it almost couldn’t have been worse as Lukaku missed a penalty and Kane earned only his appearance points. Surely lightning can’t strike twice? At least we know Lukaku won’t be missing any penalties this time.

TRANSFERS – GAMEWEEK 6

Aguero was the popular transfer in Gameweek 6. Graeme shifted funds from defence to attack by downgrading the most expensive defender in the game – Chelsea’s Marcos Alonso – and upgrading Firmino. While Peter did a straight swap with Lacazette, as he continues to go without Lukaku.

Mark however ignored the clamour for the Argentine and instead used his free transfer to dispense with his much criticised Wildcard purchase of Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Scathingly referred to by Jonty as a “Magic Bean” purchase on this week’s Scoutcast the youngster has returned a grand total of 1 point from his three appearances this season, with Liverpool shipping nine league goals on his watch. Mark’s replacement Burnley’s James Tarkowski quintupled that amount in a single Gameweek.

JAY’S WILDCARD

Players In11 – Aguero, Calvert-Lewin, Silva, Mkhitaryan, Ritchie, Gross, Kolasinac, Mee, Naughton, Fabianski, Elliot
Players Out11 – Lukaku, Firmino, De Bruyne, Choupo-Moting, Loftus-Cheek, Carroll, Valencia, Lowe, Mbemba, Foster, Myhill
Remainers4 – Kane, Ramsey, Mendy, Davies

Jay’s decision to Wildcard is perhaps surprising given how well he is doing but, as he announced on Twitter, he felt he “needed to shake up the midfield/GKs and was risking missing out on price rises in these 2 areas if I didn’t hit the WC button”.

Jay’s used his Wildcard to do something different – he’s become the only Top Five manager without a 4.5m midfielder or indeed a 4.0m defender. He clearly has one eye on rotation around Champions League fixtures.

His Wildcard has also seen him depart from the “Power Three” up front. Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin (5.0m), who scored the winner in the Under 20 World Cup final in June for England, lines up alongside Harry Kane and Sergio Aguero.

Jay will be hoping the England starlet can keep hold of his starting spot as Everton enter a decent run of fixtures with Arsenal the only top six side they face until Liverpool in Gameweek 16.

In midfield Jay swapped Manchester City midfielders as David Silva replaced Kevin De Bruyne. The Spaniard currently providing better value at 8.4m compared to the Belgian’s 9.9m.

Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsey is a non-mover in Jay’s side ahead of a decent set of fixtures until Gameweek 11’s encounter with Manchester City. Newcastle’s Matt Ritchie and Brighton’s Pascal Gross the sub 6.0m options in midfield.

At the back he’s gone for four wing-backs in Arsenal’s Sead Kolasniac, Manchester City’s Benjamin Mendy, Tottenham’s Ben Davies, and Swansea’s Kyle Naughton. Burnley’s Ben Mee the only centre-back to make the cut.

Jay’s been unlucky with the ACL injury to Mendy, although as his most expensive defender at 6.5m he shouldn’t have too much trouble replacing him.

Unlike his fellow Top Five manager’s largely unsuccessful Wildcard, Jay’s transfers earned him an impressive 26 points.

Graeme’s decision to sell Alonso and Firmino for Bellerin and Aguero netted him a 24 point gain after factoring in the cost of the four point hit.

Despite Lacazette outscoring Aguero by 13 points to 11, Peter’s decision to captain the Argentine means he gained nine immediate transfer points instead of losing two.

Three managers – Peter, Matthew and Mark – remain in minus numbers for points gained on immediate transfers minus hits. Perhaps showing how unpredictable the first six Gameweeks have been.

Taking a look at Benched Points, Graeme’s total of 61 is the result of playing the wrong keeper (Foster / Elliot) three times this season, and benching the wrong one out of Naughton and Bournemouth’s Charlie Daniels in the last two weeks.

There is general agreement when is comes to defenders and forwards but much more variation in the midfield area. Our elite quintet appear a little uncertain about who will deliver the points in the center of the park.

In the 6.0m and under category we currently have a spread of eight players, including three 4.5m mids – Carroll, Loftus-Cheek, and the injured Nathaniel Chalobah.

FORMATION

ManagerPeterGraemeJayMatthewMark
GW Formation3-4-33-4-33-4-34-3-33-4-3

3-4-3 was again the most popular formation this week. So far this season it has been chosen 77% of the time with 4-3-3 second most popular on 20%.

Those managers with two 4.5m mids (Graeme, Matthew, and Mark) look set to alternate between 3-4-3 and 4-3-3 depending on who has the better fixture between fourth defender and fourth midfielder.

GAMEWEEK 7

With no transfers so far this Gameweek our elite quintet are perhaps hoping to save a transfer going into the international break.

However with a few injuries to deal with and the worrying news of Sergio Aguero being involved in a car crash, we may yet see some movement in the transfer market.

There is also the dilemma of who to captain out of Kane and Lukaku. The break until Gameweek 8 in the middle of October will feel like a long time should this group of top managers fail to repeat their Gameweek 6 success.

    Another great read.

Jay's wildcard is particularly interesting. Given my disdain for cheap mids I'm starting to wonder whether he's onto something with a cheap striker . The option of going 3-4-3 or 4-4-2 certainly appeals more than having to field the perma injured RLC and the perma points dodging Carroll.

      I don't know, I think he's taking a risk by playing Calvert-Lewin.

Surely you need three from Kane, Lukaku, Morata, Jesus, Lacazette (and Aguero if not too badly hurt)?

Although Hazard and Sanchez may yet emerge as midfield point-scoring machines this season, for now I don't think you can look beyond a power three up front.

But he's a much better FPL manager than me, so I won't judge too quickly!

Totally agree. At least two of those you mentioned.

I think it's possible that Vardy, Rooney, Chicarito, or Firmino can cover a top striker, particularly if you play the fixtures.

But a cheap striker seems a bad idea to me

Vardy looks the most enticing out of that mid-price bunch. I'm interested to see how Firmino does with Mane and Coutinho back in the side. One of those players doing well would help balance funds in the squad.

Certainly. And if one of them comes good I think the decisions up front aren't actually too difficult.

For me Kane is a sure thing, and Lukaku > Morata looks a decent option, if you can fit in Sterling/Silva. I'd prefer Jesus but that big front three will be difficult to pull off.

The risk of going without Lukaku is probably worth it

Spurs and Chelsea look tricky for United but I'd fancy Lukaku to score in the three fixtures before then. Morata however has to be nailed from Gameweek 8, I'll be very surprised if he doesn't make it into the Top Five template.

Spent a bit of time looking at what a wildcard team would look like if going Calvert-Lewin / kane / morata as front three.
The extra money would give me a midfield of cout / mkhi / alli and silva with defence including jones / davies / otamendi and zanka.
Gotta admit it is pretty enticing.
what I would like to know is whether Niasse is better option than Calvert-Lewin.

        All options are open

        4-3-3 with 4.5 pivot
        3-4-3 with cheap defence
        3-4-3 with cheep third striker

Thing is I've my heart set on keeping Eriksen and Salah and getting in a chelsea defender so 4-3-3 is the most sensible one for that. Although means missing out on a City attacker.

Well of course all options are open and we'd be silly to not allow for any possibility, but the cheap striker thing just feels very low on the list of my possible outcomes, and yours

I'm with you though: Eriksen, Salah, Chelsea defender, with Kane and Morata. I want Sterling, I also want Otamendi. Jesus would be nice but that's probably too far. Then throw in Mee and RLC and the team looks pretty close to complete

Yep - looking the best way for me. Love Sterling or Silva but would really harm the defence and I there's real value in investing a little bit more in the likes of a chelsea def and a sou def with their great run.

Sad that below Vardy the striker pot is very thin indeed.

I respectfully disagree with 'Surely you need three from Kane, Lukaku, Morata, Jesus, Lacazette (and Aguero if not too badly hurt)?

With that expensive a front line you are bound to lose on price/value and although you will not be down in rankings you will never be too high. It is too guaranteed, not ambitious. Too mild. They will never perform consistently compared to their price.

You have to choose the best two and combine with a cheap third striker because many will do that and get better points from their better midfields.

Having three premium forwards doesn't mean you can't have a couple of decent mids and even a couple of decent defenders.

I think form and fixtures at the moment dictate a power three. I'm currently on Kane, Lukaku and Jesus. I feel very nervous about not owning Lacazette this week. For GW8 I'm looking to bring-in Morata, most likely for Lukaku although keeping Lukaku vs Liverpool's back line is appealing.

It's not that this strategy will remain in place for ever but I would need to see a cheap third striker do well. I take your point about better midfielders and I would love to have Eriksen, Silva, Mkhi, Salah but I can't afford all of them with my front line.

Currently I think/hope there is better value in cheaper mids like Ramsey, Choupo-Moting, Ritchie than cheap third strikers.

Ultimately we only need two transfers to switch styles. A move like Jesus > Vardy/Firmino would allow Choupo-Moting > Sterling/Silva/Sane for example. Jesus > Joselu or DCL means upgrading our 4th midfielder too. I can see the benefits of doing this I just don't currently think it is the best way to get points. Cue Joselu hat-trick!

Thank you very much. That is detailed and enlightening. I admire the firmness in your belief and strategy.

However, when you say you are "nervous about not owning Lacazette", I think that says a lot; you want to guarantee the hıghest points scorers but there is no end to that.

What I am saying is more mathematical. Assuming that you were able to find the top three of the 6 top forwards you mentioned, the third would be Lukaku. Lukaku's value/game is 3.8. 20 players offer better value in midfield and include Silva, Mkhi, Eriksen, Sterling, Sane. In defence there are even more; 3 Chelsea, 4 City, 3 Saints, 2 United players... So in my opinion, instead of a heavy third striker, there are many more options back which are not difficult to find and offer better value and thus will carry you up the ranks.

Yet, there is a flaw in my thinking too. Only 3 non-premium forwards offer better value than Lukaku. Hemed, Abraham, Vardy. So for my logic to beat yours one would have to find one of those. I have Abraham in my team so that is why I believe in this! (and then again I have Kane and Lukaku so I am losing on value myself...)

Great game, ain't it? Good luck today.

Well the counter to the value argument is the captaincy argument - I like to have two or three captain options in my team.

Kane and Lukaku were my two candidates this week. Looking ahead it will be Kane or Morata for GW8. Then maybe Jesus or Morata GW9. I want to have those choices. Or maybe I will keep Lukaku, it depends on the international break, it's a fluid game.

Obviously outside of those front three I look for value. Incidentally I'm considering selling Lukaku for Morata as my next transfer. Morata being over 1m cheaper would allow me to upgrade Atsu to Richarlison in GW10 for example, I think Morata and Richarlison will do better than Lukaku and Atsu over the next 6 gameweeks perhaps. This is how I think about my decisions.

As to your assumption that I "want to guarantee the hıghest points scorers but there is no end to that," I'm not quite sure what you mean by that. Firstly I used Lacazette as an example of the riches on offer up front - we simply can't have them all! Secondly, well, of course I want the highest points scorers - don't we all?

Obviously I understand the game is about finding value, the best price v points ratio, but it's also about picking players at the right time - getting the hot streaks and avoiding the droughts; balance; ownership; coverage; etc, planning over short term, mid term and long term. I tend to focus on mid term (3-4 weeks) but with an eye on short and long.

I also think it is only human to be nervous about a player that I don't own hurting me in a certain week, this week it is Lacazette I fear the most. But I have Ramsey, so I'm hoping owning him may mitigate the damage. Although that hasn't applied this week with Kane and Alli/Eriksen.

Finally I try to be aware of biases - have you read this article by Ludo http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2016/05/26/the-psychology-of-fantasy-football/ ? There's another bias I would add which is Loss Aversion - we feel loses more than we feel gains http://www.nytimes.com/2013/12/09/your-money/overcoming-an-aversion-to-loss.html It's a hard one to overcome because it is hardwired into us as humans (just as it is in monkeys https://www.ted.com/talks/laurie_santos#t-824997)

Sometimes as an FPL manager (and a human!) I need reminding of one or more of these aspects of decision making, and it always good to hear different perspectives.

Writing these articles has shown me how different types of managers can succeed. Quick to make changes when things aren't going right, (even the great Ville is prone to a rage transfer!), it's more educational in a way when they are not doing so well.

There are different ways to play the game and be successful but playing your own game seems the most important. I'm very wary when someone says this is the right way to play. It may well be for them and they believe it, but it's not necessarily right for others.

Anyway those are my thoughts! I hope you are having a good weekend so far 🙂

This has been fantastic reading (particularly as I was travelling on business) and I am indebted. I had read the ffscout article but not the other two.

I disagree with the captaincy argument. In my view and experience, life turns out to be different than our choices. Many times I have seen that had I captained the same player for 8 weeks, rather than changing between my 4 premium players, I would not have been worse. Last week I captained Kane and won. This week it was Lukaku and a minor failure.

But yes, it is a fluid game and our control is therefore more limited except in the long run. By the way, we think alike as I am also (unsure but) considering Lukaku to Morata with a view to Mbemba to Stones with my ITB limited cash. Similarly we were both lucky this week as Lacazette did not punish us.

At the end of the game you are absolutely right that everyone plays their own game and more than one tactic will succeed. Mine (and what I meant in your question) was that I find it more tempting to find the best duo of forwards and then not to spend money on the best third available but sparse it to find the best trio in midfield (rather than the best duo there). I guess I like it more balanced.

I am on 68 this week with Coutinho and Elliott on the pitch and 15 minutes remaining. I hope the week has been kind to you too.

Coutinho was a good pick, well done, my pick Salah didn't quite have that edge today. I ended on 72, which I guess is basically the same as you after BPS.

It's interesting, after our thoughts about a power three - I was on my WC last week and I found it hard to decide between Sanchez + Joselu vs Ramsey + Jesus. I went for Ramsey and Jesus but this week Joselu proved to be the better 3rd forward. I hope Jesus will benefit from Aguero's absence, fingers crossed the long haul flights don't zap his energy too much before GW8.

Atsu is the one player I would like to upgrade in my squad, I wasn't particularly impressed with him today. Still with Morata being injured I'll probably end up holding onto Lukaku for now, I don't really see a good alternative, which means no funds to upgrade Atsu... or maybe I'll get Joselu and then do Atsu to Hazard... not sure that is worth a hit though. Or play my fourth defender... Mee got 7 points on my bench this week.

Much to ponder over the international break 🙂 Hope your business trip has been a success, and enjoy planning your next moves 🙂

Indeed, I finished 71 so our teams have a similar success story despite my playing with Tabby rather than your Jesus. As you already said, we all have our systems and different ones might work. As I intend to WC over the GW11/12 period, I cannot shift to a three-man frontline so I will need to stick with mine. It does not seem too dissimilar to yours in that respect too, though. With Agüero and Morata injured, unless you decide to take a hit and downgrade (and then whom), there is no alternative really. Anyway, Jesus must produce when Agüero is absent so you will benefit from that. The international break will be a good time to rest for us and think, it seems...

I've gone from 900k to 50k since my gw4 wildcard with Abraham the whole way. Many ways to skin a cat but playing 4.5 shitters is not for me. Neither is having Abraham lol I'm shifting cash around now to get vardy in that spot.

Well done, I like your Richarlison pick, and not owning Lukaku has worked out well for you. I hope to squeeze Richarlison in for GW10. Fingers crossed Morata isn't out for too long.

If I decide to go with another hit(already -4) and change Jones, who to get?

    a) Monreal (better for this gw)
    b) Otamendi (good for long term)

    Stuck.

Already took a -4 hit earlier in the week, WC unavailable, have Jones and Aguero. Would you take out both Aguero and Jones at this point for -12 or just one of them?

    Team looks like this:

    Foster Elliot
    Mbemba Martina Cedric Jones Rosenoir
    Salah Groß D.Silva Mhki Carroll
    Lukaku Morata Aguero

1.) Aguero + Jones > Kane and 4.3 - for -12 and the lightest back line known to man :/
2.) Aguero > Vardy - who's on a yellow flag, but has decent fixtures
3.) Aguero > Jesus - who will be returning from S. America and could be rested

    Help!

    Please pick one:

    (a) David Silva 8.4m
    (b) Sterling 7.9m
    (c) Sane 8.3m

No Jesus in team, just looking for a City cover. State your reason would be splendid.

I personally went for D.Silva as he's less of a rotation risk.

Sane is an interesting differential. He's unplayable right now.

Sterling would be my last choice. He's been strolling into the box without a man on him and I'm still not convinced by his finishing.
