Development Squad – Expected Goals

As regular readers may know, the current set of tasks being carried out by Matz1lla involves Expected Goal data.

We have made great progress with this in recent weeks and, on our test servers, we now have tables and maps up and running. That gives me the opportunity to show work in progress and detail what is due to arrive in Update Six.

Effectively, we’re using Opta’s data to bring you both Expected Goals (xG) and Expected Assists (xA) for both players and teams.

If you are new to the concept you can view this excellent movie from Opta explaining how xG is generated.

A full explanation from Opta is also available here.

Meanwhile, the xA data is a little different to that currently available elsewhere.

The Expected Assists data you will get as part of the update will not be generated using the xG value of a shot, instead – as explained here – it assesses the likelihood that a pass will lead to a “primary assist”.

Opta’s full explanation is:

“Expected assists measures the likelihood that a pass will be a primary assist. The model is based on the finishing location of the pass, what type of pass it was and a variety of other factors. This model is not reliant on whether a shot was taken from this pass, so credits all passes, regardless of whether they result in a shot.”

By combining xG and xA, we are able to offer an Expected Goal Involvement (xGI) statistic for players, representing the number of goals they were expected to either score or assist over any given period.

The table below shows the top ten Defenders xGI for Gameweek 7 just gone.

members

So our Members will be getting access to three statistics – xG, xA and xGI, with the latter available for players only.

However, our team data also includes xGC, or Expected Goals Conceded, so that we can assess team defensive strength.

All this data is, as ever, available to slice by any of our filtered intervals – so you can view player and team data by Gameweek, by Matches and by Home and Away matches.

It’s also dropped into our comparison tools for players and teams and will be made available for adding to custom tables.

We’ve also mapped the data to provide a visual representation of xG.

So below you’ll see a graphic showing a comparison of Sergio Aguero and Gabriel Jesus and their xG so far. We’ve allowed for full tooltip information on any xG value, giving access to the shot type, the assister and the xG value assigned.

members

Effectively, coupled with our existing Opta data, this adds a whole new weapon to our armoury when analysing teams and players.

It allows for the assessment of players and teams that are perhaps either under or overperforming, therefore offering clues as to likely regression or improvement.

We will, of course, be using the data to create members’ articles, offering guidance on how to use it and what it can tell us.

We’re currently refining the work on the test server, fixing bugs and adding new methods of showing the data.

Next, we plan to add widgets to the members’ dashboard, showing the top ten under and overachieving players for xG for the current Gameweek, with the ability to quickly view any Gameweek and the season as a whole.

I would hope that we will be in a position to release the first iteration of xG as part of Update Six early next week.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Discussion of xG values will be fine within reason. As always, it will down to our discretion. A post listing an entire set of data will likely be removed, a discussion around one or two figures all fine. It will be case by case.

            Hi Mark,

A suggestion would be to have this:

Player Expected points for Goal involvement - i.e. for a striker, XG x expected points for Goal including expected bonus uplift + XA x expected points for Assist including expected bonus uplift.

Player Expected points for Goal involvement (value) - Expected points for Goal involvement / Price

Figures may go to multiple decimal places though. lol

      2. Econ Man
          6 years, 6 months ago

What if someone posts a list of xG figures from Understat? Hopefully the Scout model will be better, but figures are in general going to be highly correlated, especially when you are looking at xG from a reasonably large sample of shots (say xG from 20+ shots).

Fantasy Football Scout - daily hot topic

How do you select a striker?

Aside from the obvious criteria - of scoring goals. What else do you look for in a striker.

Are you a fan of underlying statistics - such as shots on target and the expected goals informtion we are developing?

Or do you favour a striker who perhaps is not as prolific as a goal scorer but also offers assists and is a magnet for bonus?

Who have been your favourite strikers over the years and how did you select them - fixtures/form or back that initial over riding concern - actually getting the ball in the net.

For me I look at fixtures more than anything with a striker.

fixtures against weaker opposition is often Fantasy gold for a good striker. We can never have all the good ones with just three slots so it makes sense to target those with the best fixtures and chop and change.

Its why I'm happy to ditch Lukaku in favour of Jesus...and why in previous seasons I've opted for the likes of Drogba and Rooney when the fixtures look great.

By trading in one of my cash cows for a magic bean.

Planning on Vardy to a cheaper striker

Or one of my three premium mids to Richarlison.

I've looked at RMT and analysis here on captaincy over next few and other strikers all feature more prominently than Lukaku for the armband.

But GWK 12 that all changes and I'll be launching Operation Welcome Back Rom then.

Fixtures are key. When it comes to captaining a striker I always look at the oppositions shot conceded in the box. Being the penalty taker for their club is also a huge swing and the main reason why Lukaku will not score as much as Kane this year. In saying that there have been a lot less pens so far in the PL this season

Even last year when midfielders rule I can't help but captain a striker. Same this season - though that is paying off.

Agree those shots conceded in the box are key.

There are also some strikers though were quality shines through quantity in the underlying stats -like Vardy - very accurate.

He doesn't have to score as much as Kane. He costs 1m less.

He scored 25 goals playing for a worse team without penalties last season. He doesn't need them.

Look at underlying stats and then watch his confidence in highlights or full games if I can.

Kane- great underlying stats but was just unlucky not to get a brace a game.
Joselu- great underlying stats but panics on the ball and can't finish.

Assists are handy as are bonus points (Morata loves baps more than Costa) but goals are king of course.

Look for explosiveness as well as a captaincy option. More likely to score a brace+, he's worth the outlay.

Being on pens are a big factor too, it's an easy 3-5 goals a season.

Lukaku the ultimate form v fixtures at the moment. Don't have him and need to move Morata. May get him in regardless.

I do look at fixtures but pre season it's coupled with the team and their role in that team for example Spurs Harry Kane whereas a team like WBA goals could come from anywhere.

Over the years I've had Shearer, Henry, Cole, Yorke, Van Persie, Van Nistelrooy, Costa, Lukaku, Vardy the list goes on and on lol all selected because you knew where guaranteed 20 plus goals a season...

Stats/Fixtures/form and players that I trust to captain all considered specially Fixtures.

But also ' gut ' is big factor for me.

My best season was with sturridge then got suarez on his first game after the ban. So it wasn't about stats/form/fixtures sometimes best to go with your gut.

        Form/Player quality > Fixtures.

The underlying statistics, mainly the xG, help me identify form.

Shots on target. That's it. For a striker, that is the be-all and end-all. From wherever.

Sometimes, that's not enough. The shot is too weak, it is always at the keeper, it hits the woodwork.

But the good strikers - the Lukakus and Kanes - have always had very high figures in this regard.

Goalscoring form, don't really consider bps as these will come with the goals anyway. Big fan of playing the fixtures too, ie the forward in question is facing a team with a historically poor defence.

Don't really look at stats, go with gut instinct and through watching games or MOTD.

Lies, damned lies.. and statistics, price and fixture.

It depends on the typology of strikers you require, with price being the key driver of choice.

My usual set up is to have 2x premium strikers (10+) plus 1xmid ranger (say up to 9.0).

Selection tends to be through using a blend of quantitative and qualitative methods to assess options and decide.

        Quant:
Stats so far, which are shots on target, conversion and involvemen (though I'm increasingly using xG to test if correlation according to that metric = causation).
It's also good to read other people's interpretation of the data to understand what they see in it, then look at the raw data yourself (if you can) to see if you agree - if you don't have time to do this, I totally get it tho haha 🙂

Qualitative - this tends to be more decision making based on my own judgement and perspective, usually after pinpointing options quantitatively. I look at things like:
        - Is his potential output is commensurate with his price?
        - Are fixtures are good enough to warrant investment (particularly for the mid ranger; for the premiums you tend to think they are "fixture proof" - c.f. Kun Aguero, RvP, Didier Drogba, Harry Kane)?
        - By owning him, am not missing out on a better alternative?
        - What "escape routes" (as you'd call them Jonty) do I have in case of emergency?

        Then I make my choices.

Obviously harder during the season when you're not on your WC as you're restricted by factors like cash in the bank, fixtures, the need to differentiate and perceptions of form.

But that kind of is in a nutshell how I do it.

I'd add that for the cheap and dirty strikers it's always a matter of short term fixtures coupled with my perception of form - they need to be a merciless points grab rather than a fire and forget normally

In a striker I look for one that is greedy. I know Kane will never pass and will always shoot and therefore will give himself a good chance of scoring.

I also look for strikers who are the focal point of their teams. For example most goals will go through Kane, Lukaku and Morata, however at City you are not sure if the goals will come from Aguero or Jesus. It's the same reason I am not tempted by Firmino but would potentially be by Vardy.

I also don't like to skimp on strikers. I have selected a strong front 3 and bar injury they will be in all season. I always find with the 3rd cheap striker route I am always doubting myself and wasting transfers each week trading and swapping between them.

Fixtures have a small part to play for me but less so I think when going with premium forwards as they can score against anybody (or should be able to at that price).

The eye test (of course) - and fixtures and form.

But especially important is their centrality to the team. I.e Kane, Lukaku (who I think is a worse player than Kane), and Morata are all central to the attacking efforts of their team. The end goal in these teams is often to get the ball to these strikers - they dominate the big chances. I'm not convinced that the same can be said for someone like Jesus or Firmino. They are often supplementary or auxiliary - they may be a creator or play deeper than the other options - they often sacrifice themselves for the good of the team. Accordingly, they may also be more prone to rotation, either because of the benefits of an out and out striker (Sturridge) or because their role can be taken by a winger (Sterling).

Accordingly, my tactic going forward, is to accommodate two big central strikers (Kane and Morata atm), and to rotate, according to fixtures, the less pivotal players. I'm looking, atm, at Vardy, as a pretty essential attacker at a team lower in the division who score goals.

like a mixture of a consistent striker (Costa), a potentially explosive (Kane, Kun) and a value option (Vardy, Austin). Examples given not specific to this season.
Started this season with Lukaku, Jesus & Firmino. Jesus turned out to be steady rather than explosive so Lukaku went to Kane.

A mixture of underlying stats (shots inside box, shots on target, big chances), and the eye test. I also like strikers with high baseline bps, as they turn 6 pointers into 9 pointers and is why i'm holding onto Firmino 😉

Watching the games will ALWAYS rule over a load of numbers and going form over fixtures to an extent. If two players are on form then I'll use stats and fixtures.

I'm thinking of dropping Kaku for Jesus but this could be the stupidest move I make all season

Goal threat. Set pieces, obviously penalties help as well.

RVP was probably my favourite ever FPL striker. Especially at Arsenal he would take a lot of corners and free kicks. Many was the game where he might be quiet in general play, swing in a set piece delivery that was nodded home. 'Only' an assist but ten points at least avoided the dreaded captain failure.

Maybe I'm wrong and someone can actually back this up with real data, but:

        - I think that fixtures are much more important for strikers outside of the top 6 teams. Those teams defending against weaker opposition are less likely to park the bus..

        - But I don't really care who Morata / Kane / Lukaku / Aguero is playing against - these top strikers can score against anyone - I'm going to select them based more on form (the eye test).

So in Summary - fixtures are more important for cheap / mid-priced strikers and form is more important for the premium options.

This season just choosing the three most expensive that are available seems to be working great. We can build the rest of the team with value picks and have an amazing captaincy choice every week. Seems you can bank on 30 points from your strikers most weeks.

        GW1: Lukaku (26), Kane (1), Jesus (1)
        GW2: Lukaku (12), Kane (1), Jesus (1)
        GW3: Kane (4), Jesus (9), Lukaku (0)
        GW4: Lukaku (12), Kane (13), Jesus (12)
        GW5: Kane (2), Lukaku (12), Jesus (6)
        GW6: Aguero (22), Kane (13), Lukaku (7)
        GW7: Kane (26), Lukaku (6), Lacazette (2)

Thats an average of 27 per week and my captains haven't been particularly great (first player on the list is captain). It is a third of the budget but with so much value in defence and potential in some of the budget mids I think its a price worth paying. The premium strikers are also the most captain (has anyone captained a midfielder yet?!), so I think it also covers having calamitous weeks even if you pick the wrong captain.

This is considering Kane doesn't even have a star by his name yet on the transfer page and Jesus minutes have been restricted, I can't see the points tailing off any time soon.

As it happens the big strikers are bossing the stats too, the important ones to look for are shots in the box, shots on target and use touches in the box as a reference to see whether players are overachieving or not.

        I have three criteria.

One slot is for, indeed, those that provide both assists and goals. That is why I will not ditch Lukaku. He is the only uninjured player who has had 15 shots on target plus 12 chances created. http://members.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/my-stats-tables/view/20404/

One slot is for the non-premium, usually budget striker. Currently mine is Abraham. 2 years ago it was Bournemouth Wilson until injured. I will WC in GW11 and all going well, I will switch to Joselu then.

And the last slot is for either my gut feeling or what I fear. What I fear is when someone is owned 50%+. That is Lukaku so no problems. Then my gut feeling is Kane. He always was this season, from GW1. I will not change him. Similarly, I will never get Lacazette for this slot; since I can't see Arsenal winning that much and its his first season. Similarly, as long as Jesus and Agüero play together I will never get one of them; they will share goals. As for Morata, I don't have the gut feeling but I am getting to be scared...

For me it's shots on goal.

I've had Kane and Lukaku since the start. I never contemplated replacing Kane as although he didn't score in August (again!) the stats were there . He could easily have had 3 or 4 goals by the end of August with a bit of luck. That faith has now been rewarded with his September form.

I'm not contemplating switching Lukaku despite United's difficult run of fixtures. He remains guaranteed to start for those difficult games (unlike Mkhi) and United's most likely source of a goal. Plus he has Huddersfield (a) in the middle of that run of games. He could quite possibly score 2/3 in that game (just like Kane). If he then scores 2 goals across the Liverpool, Spurs, and Chelsea games then he suddenly as 4 goals from the tricky 4 game spell going into GW 12.

I'd only consider switching either Kane or Lukaku if there was an injury, suspension, or their shots on goal suddenly fell off a cliff consistently over 3 or 4 games.

Are you a fan of underlying basic - such as putting the tea bag in first?

Or do you favour a method which perhaps is not as prolific as a putting the water in first then the bag but also offer in the milk and sugar at the same time?

some people letting their fpl teams cloud their judgement a bit. as soon as rose is anywhere near 100% davies is at best getting half the games. big scores against the likes of huddersfield, hull and newcastle doesn't change 3 years of information. you are pochettino and mo salah is coming to town, who do you play, rose or davies. for all his quality on the ball mane showed last season the most basic of holes in davies' armoury. what might change this season now davies has become more prolific & reliable for goals & assists is rose sits out a few more games spurs expect to dominate

When the time comes that he's not nailed on, his price is too hefty for him to be left, so he'll be outta there for me - as with everyone else!

At the moment it's not clouded judgement to own him or maybe even be bringing him in for a short-term points grab v Bournemouth. But I guess if you're thinking for some reason you'll have him all season then that's perhaps a bit silly!

Ah right, yeah - it's not clear who is the #1 LB for Spurs now given the Rose "googlegate", and the circumstances of Rose's absence as well whiff a bit of Berahino's.

However, saying Bavies is cemented in the position is certainly folly

Rose has been "a couple of weeks away from a return" for over 8 months now. The injury was clearly far more serious than originally envisaged, and has been complicated to treat. He could be another 8 months away from returning, in that time Davies will have racked up hundreds of points. I don't think you can let Rose affect your decision to buy or keep Davies.

This. I let the FUD around Costa's 5th yellow stop me from getting him. Regretted that a lot.

Bought Davies when Rose first got injured 8 months ago. Hasn't left my team since.

      Here's a question.

What's your biggest defining fantasy football moment you can remember?

Smalling's OG in the last few mins of the 2015 season?
Aguero's 70th minute sub and penalty miss last year?

        DGW 34 2015/16.

My arch-rival, my cousin, had been leading the ML all year and had not realised the BB strategy, wildcarding in GW20. He was giving me stick all year, saying about how he'd finally beaten me, how he was going to spend his winnings in our cash ML as his 60 point lead was unassailable, and each week giving me a lot of banter about how much better he was doing than me - basically doing a Newcastle circa 1996.

The 175 points to overtake were delicious in 34. The 100 points to ensure I won the league from him by 60 points exactly
in DGW37 was the cherry on top.

        I didn't hear from him for 3 weeks after DGW37 🙂

          Hahaha, wonderful stuff!

I had similar in the work ml last season, was trailing our IT manager by over 100 points at xmas (which was mentioned a few times!), and was still 60 points behind come spring. Absolutely murdered him wildcarding in 35, GW's 35-38 i scored 64, 74, 183 (-8), and 90, to end up 100 points clear of him. Sweet sweet success!

Mine was the final minute of last season, had fought may way past 68 other competitiors through the season to get to the final of our LMS competition. The last gameweek had to's and fro's throughout the day, but a late Fabregas assist appeared to have done enough for me. Then up popped Ben Davies for my opponent with a stunning long range drive! I was now behind. The minutes ticked by into 90, 91, 92, then news of a goal at Stamford Bridge! Batshiyi....assisted by Fabregas. I genuinely shouted in joy, refreshed my team, and I had him by a single point! It wasn't over there though as I had an excruciating 45 or so waiting for BPS to be confirmed, so I was in a state of pergatory. Finally, an hour after the final whistle had blown i felt like i could truly celebrate as champion.

Neither if you can avoid it! Is this for a draft league?

If not, get Choupers or Richarlison instead. Too much rotation risk.

I like a striker to be involved a lot.

For example, in the first game of the season Arsenal beat Leicester 4-3.

Lacazette scored, played the vast majority of the game, but still only got 6 points. That set off alarm bells for me.

Like it. Wouldn't be sure on Mustafi but looks to be playing I guess so why not - could nab the odd goal.

Only thing I'd say is Fab -> Choupers or Richarlison. Fab too much of a rotation risk - can see why you're trying to cover Chelsea but I'd probably try to do this elsewhere. Can you up Mustafi to Luiz with the remainder from subbing Cesc out? In fact if you get Choupers you can stretch to Azpi, right?

Wouldn't touch Morata now given he's out for 3-6 weeks apparently 🙂

If you're talking Jesus, though, I can get behind you owning him. Be tempted by Fab down to a 4.5, go 4-3-3 if you do do that.

Any chance at developing an Expected Points stat. Taking into account the difference in score each position group gets for a goal and obviously the points difference between a goal and an assist.

Might help settle the debate between whom is better an expensive defender or a mid-low priced mid.

Monreal and Jones have some bloody rough fixtures over the next few - you're banking upon Mou parking the bus against Kane and Wenger finding a bus to park

Azpi and Stones are in my WC draft, and Mee / Wimmer rotate nicely as the last two
