Technical Area – The Rise of Ben Davies

It’s been quite a start to the season for Ben Davies. Currently leading all defenders in terms of points with 49 – a number which trails only Sergio Aguero and Romelu Lukaku at any position – the Welshman’s form is inarguable.

In the six matches in which he has featured (Davies was rested for Spurs’ home encounter with Swansea in Gameweek 5), he has returned an average of 8.2 points per match (ppm) – more than a point clear of his closest rival (Antonio Valencia’s 6.7).

Last season, Davies performed admirably while deputising for the injured Danny Rose – racking up a goal and three assists, in addition to his share of Spurs’ league-leading clean sheet total. However, his attacking returns this campaign (two goals, three assists) have already exceeded last season’s totals in just 30% of the minutes.

In order to better interpret this attacking leap, we’ll be breaking down Davies’ early-season heroics, and looking for players who might serve as good benchmarks for projecting the Welshman’s performance over the remainder of the campaign.

I know it´s early on and this one would surely bite me in the but:
i do not own Lukaku atm, and i find myself thinking that i´m not so afraid of not owning him while he plays for United as i were last year when he played for Everton, that´s a strange feeling... Even against Palace i wasn´t that concerned, i knew that he would most likely score or maybe even two, and it would have hurt, mind you, but for me the way United play and the price you pay for him without pens i feel more confident going with Jesus for now, and in that bracket i could easily swap between him and Morata or Aguero, which could be just a 0.5-1.0m between them in a weeks time going by this rate.

Yup United’s playing style is a huge concern. 21 goals in 7 is so underwhelming.

my english is not as good as it should be and i can see why my phrasing "playing style" and the fact 21 goals scored in seven matches does sound a bit weird, but what i was thinking of were not in the measure of stats entirely, but more down to Lukaku in Everton (whenever they scored he was in it, it felt like, and they had some outworldly matches, like that Bournemouth game) vs the way Lukaku operates in the United set-up. As i recall Lukaku had 50% or so involvement in Evertons goal last year and now has, i don´t know 30% in Uniteds? But stats aside, it was a sentiment, nor could one predict the future and playing FPL is down to so many possible routes in order to make one´s team and i could very well see myself revrting my ideas come nowember-)

60% ownership says he is massively overrated imo. If he played for any other team it wouldnt be half of that. He mainly down to UTD fans at start . Kind of like Ibrah last season

I agree in some ways but it is risky not having him when he is 65% owned. Also he is in penalties isn't he? I know he missed one but I can't see who's gonna take them off him. I think for games when Jose parks the bus (top 6 teams) it's fine to go without but everyone else, at home especially it's get behind the sofa time.

admittedly Jesus hasn´t been, as you say, but he tend to score whenever he plays and my thinking was more in the scheme of 4-8gws, and Morata could maybe turn out to be the better option long term

        ofc it´s risky

he might be on pens still, but Mata is afar superior pen taker as is Pogba and Martial has taken two and missed none. Rashford is also an excellent pen taker. Mourinho tends to favor his strikers to take them but i think he sees the same as everyone else that Lukaku is surprisingly not particularly good en taker, not in the same mould as Vardy, but not far ahead.. When martial took his first, Mou mentioned that Mata was the one for that game, that´swhat we know for now at least

Weaknesses: Trippier rotation, Mbemba, Cesc rotation, is Lanzini even nailed anymore?, Ramsey meh-ness, Laca constantly being subbed off at 60-70 mins.

Nothing worth a hit though 🙂

Trippier I know. Mbemba stuck with at 4.0. Cesc and Lanzini a punt but Lanzini when fit is the first man on the team sheet. Came back last week and changed the game. Rested for Burnly Brighton Palace games to come.

Yeah. I think Pope for Foster is worth a hit.

Reason being that you will never find a FT for it, you have too many other issues. So it will probably be a hit or not at all.

I think Pope over Foster gains you back 4 points over the next 12 weeks. So if it's going to be a hit anyway you may as well take it now. The only thing against it is that Elliot might sneak a CS @ Southampton.

I don't think so, Doos. Your numbers don't take saves and potential BPs into account (at least I don't think they do). I won't argue whether Brighton will concede less than Burnley but Pope can out-perform Ryan even if they do.

Defence and forwards is where your strengths are which is exactly where fpl is being won amd lost this year.

Your mid looks better than decent to me. I have eriksen Salah silva and ritchie. Your mid capable of matching and beating it on any given day with less outlay.

You will not satisfy everyone including yourself no matter what you do.

Really solid team. Obviously Morata > Jesus/Vardy seem reasonable moves, probably the former over the latter. If there's nothing else pressing (which there doesn't seem to be), I'd either roll that second transfer or use it to move Mooy to Richarlison. I'd probably just roll it.

Vincent kompany is expected back in the next game week. Doesn't this put any of you off from getting either of stones or otamendi? plus otamendi would probably need to rest after a tough game away to Ecuador and the fatigue that comes along with travelling for a long distance. Getting stones is not so attractive either as the return of kompany and pep's rotation means that he is not nailed from now onwards.

Away to Bounemouth isn't too bad given Burnley's away form this season

Bournemouth also are seemingly offensively lacking a fair bit compared to last season

Just missed sterling debate before page change. My thoughts are

    1. He costs 7.9 and would enable me to get Jesus in if Morata is out
For 7.9, its not really too huge a punt for Stoke and Burnley at home then West Brom away. You don't get 7.9 players to captain them, they're calculated gambles.
    2. With Aguero out, Sterling and Jesus look pretty safe bets for now so I'm happy to double up given how many goals City score.
    3. He has 5 goals (in 6 games) which, is more goals than any midfielder so far
    4. Had he not got the red card (-3) he probably would have got a couple of bonuses (2) and a few points the following week (say 3). He's on 35, that would make him 43 and one of the top scoring midfielders
    5. He has started 4 of the last 5 and was banned the when he didn't and has 90 minutes 3 of that 4. And he started vs Chelsea so Pep trusts him.
    6. He can be quite explosive and with no Kun in these fixtures, he'll surely be involved more.
    7. Last night was England. Nobody plays good for England. Plus, they were barely interested from what I saw. They'd already qualified.

I've owned Silva at various stages in different seasons. Never once has he managed a big score. He might be a good option as a season keeper to keep ticking over points, but he is exactly like Mkhitaryan. They will score a few assists and bonus and that is it.

Players like Sterling, Alli, Eriksen, Salah.... They offer an explosiveness and potential for big returns. Perhaps higher risk, but also higher reward.

I would much prefer a player like this, especially since midfielders give higher returns for goals!

I have had a good start and leads most of my mini-leagues. But I don`t own Ben Davies. He`s looking so good attackingly on his wingback, and he got some set pieces aswell.

He's not faced good defences like United and Spurs yet. And he blanked against Newcastle. Hardly fixture proof
