Scout Notes

International Scout Notes – Thursday

A late Harry Kane goal spares a dreadful England, while the complexities of qualification in South America could have a knock-on effect when the Fantasy calendar resumes in eight days’ time.

Here are the notes from last night’s World Cup matches.

Kane again to the rescue

Harry Kane scored for the fourth consecutive match to win a woeful match for lifeless England.

The Spurs striker now has 14 goals from his last nine matches in all competitions, with a late winner against Slovenia confirming England’s qualification for next year’s World Cup in Russia.

His 37.5% Fantasy Premier League ownership will now be hoping that Sunday’s dead rubber in Lithuania will tempt England boss Gareth Southgate to rest Kane, but that seems unlikely should the forward retain the captain’s armband.

Man City’s Kyle Walker provided the assist on a night when England laboured to break down their well-organised opponents.

His club team-mate Raheem Sterling covets a central role in Pep Guardiola’s side and was handed a chance to prove he was worthy of just that when Southgate elected to play him behind Kane.

But Sterling fluffed his lines, too often caught in possession in key areas, although he was unlucky not to open the scoring as England finally came to something approaching life in the second-half.

Few players impressed on the night, although the in-form Marcus Rashford caught the eye before the break with a display of pace and intent from the left-wing, and Joe Hart ended up with the man of the match award for a fine double save towards the end of an otherwise unedifying night.

England will travel to Russia with the hopes of a nation towards the past caring end of the scale.

Fantasy managers will be rather more invested in Sunday’s trip to Vilnius as it provides Southgate with a chance to experiment with his line-up and rest key assets for what will be a busy October once the domestic, and then European, schedule kicks in again.

Kane’s pitch time could be all the more pertinent with Romelu Lukaku now
ruled out of Belgium’s clash with Bosnia on Saturday.

The Man United striker has failed to train all week due to an ankle complaint but is optimistic of making Tuesday’s encounter with Cyprus.

It is thought that the issue is the same injury that cast doubt over Lukaku’s start against Crystal Palace in Gameweek 7. Reports state that the striker had painkilling injections to overcome the problem and he completed 90 minutes against the Eagles. Manchester United are said to be in constant contact with the Belgium FA over the Lukaku’s condition.

However, Fantasy managers are now left with a situation where there are doubts – of varying degrees – over the availability of the three top-scoring FPL forwards – Sergio Aguero, Alvaro Morata and Lukaku – ahead of next weekend’s deadline.

South American Plot Twists

A number of Premier League stars, most notably Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez and Man City defender Nicolas Otamendi, are in for a fraught final World Cup qualifying match on Tuesday night/Wednesday morning.

With the top four South American teams going through automatically to the finals in Russia, and the fifth into a play-off against New Zealand, only Brazil have already qualified.

Six teams below them are now fighting it out for the four places remaining.

Uruguay, at home to Bolivia next, need just a draw to guarantee their place. Chile and Colombia also have their fate in their own hands, but the former must travel to Brazil and the latter to Peru, with both needing a win to secure qualification for sure.

Argentina are currently out of the qualification places, and will have to win at altitude in Ecuador. If they do, they will be assured of at least a play-off place. Draw and they’re relying on other results to go their way, lose and they’re out.

All of that sets up a huge night for Sanchez’s Chile in Brazil.

The Arsenal midfielder scored the winner in a 2-1 win over Ecuador last night, adding to his back-to-back assists over the last couple of Gameweeks. Although he’s back in action on Wednesday morning, Sanchez’s trip to Watford isn’t until next Saturday evening, giving him a little more time to recuperate.

Otamendi is in for a do or die tie in Ecuador before travelling back for a 3pm home match against Stoke City two Saturdays from now. He played the full 90 minutes, as did Man United’s stand-in keeper Sergio Romero, as Argentina were held to a goalless draw at home to Peru last night.

Whatever the outcomes for their national teams, both Sanchez and Otamendi are likely to be drained by a fraught international break.

Brazil drew 0-0 in Bolivia, with Man City’s Gabriel Jesus playing the full 90 minutes of a match played at altitude.

Philippe Coutinho had a poor evening and was subbed off after 66 minutes, Chelsea’s Willian replacing him.

Fernandinho was given an eight-minute run-out towards the end of the fixture, while Roberto Firmino was an unused sub, as was Ederson.

David Ospina and Davinson Sanchez played the full 90 minutes in Colombia as they lost 2-1 to Paraguay.

Spurs defender Sanchez has started the last four matches for his club but might struggle to make that a fifth, at home to Bournemouth next Saturday, as he will have been involved in a winner-takes-all clash in Peru early on Wednesday morning.

West Brom striker Salomon Rondon started and finished Venezuela’s 0-0 draw at home to Uruguay.

Elsewhere…

Bournemouth’s Josh King scored twice and provided an assist as Norway romped to an 8-0 win in San Marino.King was, however, forced off with a knock, with the Norwegian media reporting that he had an ice pack on his knee after his withdrawal.

Spurs playmaker Christian Eriksen got the winner in Denmark’s 1-0 victory in Montenegro. Both he and Leicester City goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel played the full 90 minutes.

Germany eased past Northern Ireland 3-1, with Leroy Sane and Emre Can given second-half run-outs. Shkodran Mustafi and Antonio Rudiger were unused substitutes.

Gareth McAuley, Jonny Evans, Chris Brunt and Steven Davis played the full 90 minutes for Northern Ireland, with McAuley providing the assist for the home side’s late consolation goal.

Scotland’s last-gasp win over Slovakia included 90 minutes for Andrew Robertson, James Morrison and Matty Phillips. Darren Fletcher played 78 minutes before being replaced by James McArthur.

Brighton keeper Matty Ryan and Huddersfield midfielder Aaron Mooy started and finished Australia’s 1-1 draw with Syria.

Bournemouth striker Lys Mousset scored as France’s U21 side won their Euro U21 qualifier 2-1 against Montenegro.

    Any thoughts on this bunch?

I've Mooy and he is likely to drop soon. Morata and Mooy out. Not really good budget forwards available..?

Could do Mooy - Hazard / Morata - Abraham ?
Or just Morata -> Vardy. Personally not really fan of Vardy.

Not sure on Mooy long term and injuries in varying degrees should be monitored but this you already know, if everyone is fit then good i think. Someone from City perhaps if you choose to use your 2 FT ? Sterling or Sane for Mkhi and Jesus, or Vardy if you fancy him (everything depends on Morata i think). GL

IF Mbemba plays, which is BIG if that is decent chance of CS, but i would prob go Carroll myself there. I wouldn´t bet my house on him getting points beside showing but there is worse fixtures to play him in than Hudds at home. And his bonus points baseline seems good so if, and i repeat if, he gets something he would also in all likelyhood be in contention to get bp.

    First WC draft team;

    Fabianksi Elliot
    Rosenior Clark Davies Cedric Ward
    Silva Coutinho Sterling Gross 4.4
    Vardy Kane Lukaku

Really want a strong attacking 6 and I feel the defence is not the strongest but does the job with good fixtures.

Would ideally want Chelsea coverage but wouldn’t know how to get any in there without compromising attack.

    Any advice is much appreciated!

I would prefer sacrificing Vardy for a budget forward and get a better defence. It can get you out of trouble if your front line and midfield fail.

Some of these WC midfields I’m seeing are hideous. Chasing points at its finest. Richarlison and Chopper as 3rd and 4th mids? Really?

I’m giving it a couple of weeks before a lot of these folks will ask how they can improve their midfield.

    1. OldBenKenobi

      bit harsh i think.

there has to be sacrifices somewhere and i think people are feeling the pricier defenders with cheaper mids has more points potential then cheap defenders and pricier midfielders.

could easily say in a couple of weeks people with cheap defenders will be asking how to improve their defence

      1. I Member

This is definitely the case but I can't help but feel there's a big element of kneejerkiness to it. Bavies, Azpi and Arsenal defs have hauled in recent weeks while Salah, Mkhi and the Spurs mids blanked. It also coincides with Richarlison and Choupo-Moting being in the points. If the premium mids get double figure scores next GW people will change their minds again.

You need to spare somewhere if you want to have Kane & Lukaku & decent 3rd attacker + couple of WB's. But it seems that there are lot of almost identical teams with Richarlison / Choupo-Moting / Vardy etc.

They are the best two options in that price range as backed up by stats like shots on target.
I have both of them and they have done well the last few weeks, it also enables me to have a more expensive defence than most.
      I prefer
Alonso, Kolasinac, Richarlison & Moting (£24.7m)
      to
Ward, Lascelles, Silva & Ramsey (£24.9m)

It's more that he starts on the bench too often, and that he tends to look a lot better out there than he delivers, FPL points-wise. If he's causing a ruckus that allows his teammates to score, well, that's good for the team, but not for his FPL owners.

    Elliot
    Alonso / Davies / Mee
    Eriksen / Salah / Mkhi / Gross
    Kane (C) / Lukaku* / Abraham

    Foster // Mbemba / Carroll / Wimmer

Towards the end of the international break, the plan is:
    - Mkhi > Sterling
    - Gross > Choupo-Moting

Is the Choupo-Move a good shout, or needless? Also, if Lukaku is out I may switch to Jesus/Morata (but this is all injury dependant)

    Chelsea attack

Can any of you guys remember what formation and attacking duo/trio that Conte employed in Costa's absence last year.

Think it was pedro haz willian

Vaguely remember that pedro and hazard did quite well during that time.

Only issue is pedro has been tied up with an injury and not really sure whether 100% fit or not. His form has suffered as a result. He would therfore be a big risk.

Would just like to know as much as possible before gambling on him.

    Cheers

Pedro in Spains wcq so should mean that he is not injured. If Morata is out i think Pedro will at least start but we know we´re not getting 90 minutes regularly from him, so for me it is a gamble i´m willing to take because he tends to have some periods he really turns it on, like last year he had i think several hauls wich came within a shorter period and his total of 160points was not spectacular but it was decent. For me it is either him or Sterling or downgrading into 5-6m and instead go for Luiz, but as it is a punt i rather go for Pedro than Luiz. And i will pray that every time City scores it´s either Jesus or Silva and not Sterling-)

Ya. Same thinking. Either pedro or sterling for my Salah also and swap Hegazi for Azpi.

But sterling is winning the shootout so far at least in my eyes anyway.

Very quiet on here. England game sucked the life out of every football fan I assume. As it's international break downtime, I thought I'd ask what are the bits of FPL that give you the most joy? Basically, why do you enjoy the game?

Obviously winning the whole damn thing would be mighty fine, but put those lofty ambitions to one side for a second. Is it the Whatsapp mind-game battles with mates in mini-leagues or when one of your once-a-season rogue Andy Carroll punts works out? Is it the massive 100 point gameweeks out of nowhere or the insatiable urge to take hits? Does it enhance your watching of football or is it all to do with winning money in cash leagues? Or maybe it's just that you love to type "lol @ etc etc" on forums and this game and this site facilitate that desire.

So, what is it about FPL that pushes your buttons?

More meaningful watching football.. I would get up at 2am(asia) to watch Burnley vs Stoke only bcoz of 1 of my player play in the match.. and of course winning the cash ML . Overtaking the rivals week after week.. I also love the LOL part and shouting here when my player scores.. haha

Playing in a work ML for Prem game tickets as the prize - think the fun comes from that competition. It's also good when a punt pays off.

I enjoy the discussion on this site too, an it's better than lurking on the street frightening old grannies 😉

Its a boring game tbh, not much in it... To keep it lil bit interesting, I have been playing with rules/restrictions since last 2 years. Thats the only motivation, to do well with restrictions...

I guess those with ML to play for have more fun

But I have learned more about football by playing FPL rather than just watching... Tactics, strength, weakness are things I can understand now, now even 0-0 sometime looks exciting. So playing FPL wasnt really a waste of time 😛

I enjoy how excited I got watching Watford games the last two weeks because Richarlison is a golden god. Increasing the interest in games Id otherwise not really care about is my favorite part of FPL.

It does enhance watching games, I find. There's that extra dimension of collecting FPL info that adds interest, even when the game itself turns out to be drab. And if it helps draw you into a game that is fantastic, so much the better. With the money and subsequently the talent that has flowed into the Premiership, almost any match can produce beautiful football these days. Don't really care about mini-leagues, main focus is OR, and more precisely, how I'm doing versus the top FPL managers,

Interesting, different point of view from me - definitely agree re watching games, I have more of a focus on ML (OR then hopefully takes care of itself) but understand your POV.

RLC will come good right? I mean he is probably the best option for a playing 4.5 mid? Would love him to be fit (and scoring points) so I can rotate him with my other 4.5 defs effectively. T.Carroll and Swansea in general are starting to annoy me

Seems the only 4.5 mid likely to get more than a string of 2 pointers. I'm a bit worried that by the time he is fit and available Palace might have found a system that works without him. I'm on a wildcard but will probably stick with him because the other options are so uninspiring and because he will now be 2nd/3rd sub rather than 1st sub as he was prior to wc.

I've got an intermittent problem with the site. Don't know if others are experiencing this?

When I use the site on my phone, I usually load an article then watch the new comments come in via the "..." button. If I then click (with my finger) on one of those comments to take me to it, often it will reload the article but not find the comment; I'm left at the top of the article. If I look at the URL then I can see the page number and comment number, but it doesn't yet exist on the page.

This morning, I've had to wait 2 minutes for the comments to show on the article, which makes interacting and joining the discussion very tricky on a mobile device.

I guess this might be due to load balancing? Perhaps I'm on a server that is the last to be refreshed? I'm not familiar with the DB architecture by any means but a way of reducing the query load on a central DB during busy times would be to create "local" child versions of the DB and have a listener assigned to each one. Anyway, long story short, the comment preview on the right is bang up-to-date, but the comments in the article are late.

Yep, this is why I thought it may be a load balancing issue. When you close the window and reload, you're probably treated as a new connection and assigned a new server which may not have the delay issue.

How compromising should a WC be?

    Where is the line?

This early, I'd say 6-7/10 happiness, 3/10 compromise. What's the dilemma Mane?

Stay away from risers you wouldn't want for a few Gws after wildcard.

E.G I'm 8/10 if I WC but wish I could include Hazard. Need to build TV to achieve him & Alonso, 3 City, Kane & Kaku.

If you are wildcarding don't punt on players. This is your one chance to fix those early punts and set your team up for the next 6-10 weeks.

Imo pick the cheaper players with 12+ gws in mind and work out your rotations. Pick the mid range players with 6-10 weeks in mind as this is where you are likely going to want to spend most of your transfers and pick your top end players as you see fit as fixtures don't have as big an impact on these so you will likely swap them based on form.

Would like some advice on this line up:

    Foster, Elliot
    Otamendi, Daniels, Simpson, Cedric, Mariappa
    Salah, Alli, Silva, Richarlison, Carroll
    Kane, Lukaku, Rodriguez

1FT, £0.2 ITB, WC still available.

What would you go with here:

    A) WC to fix up mostly defence, and help work Rodriguez out of the team.
    B) Lukaku -> Jesus
    C) Rodriguez -> Joselu
    D) Other
