Scout Notes

International Scout Notes – Sunday

The Fantasy Premier League’s biggest midfield guns give it their Sunday best across Europe and Africa, while Harry Kane is at it again for an otherwise drab England.

Here are the notes from Sunday’s World Cup qualifiers.

Big hitters wield their influence

The four most popular midfielders in Fantasy Premier League were all in action last night.

And all four brought cheer, of varying sizes, to their owners.

Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah (34.1%) hit a historic double for Egypt as they qualified for the World Cup for the first time in 27 years with a last-gasp 2-1 victory over Congo.

The Reds winger converted a 95th-minute penalty to win a tense match in which Premier League players Ahmed Hegazi, Ramadan Sobhi, who played 87 minutes, and Mohamed Elneny also featured, with West Brom centre-half Hegazi having one effort cleared off the line.

Salah now has seven goals in all competitions this season, but back-to-back matches against Manchester United and Chelsea will test a player whose 16.7% conversion rate is the second-worst among the top eight scorers from midfield.

United’s Henrikh Mkhitaryan (32.3%) opened the scoring for Armenia in their 1-1 draw away in Kazakhstan.

Mkhitaryan is the fourth most sold player since Gameweek 7 came to an end, with 101,000+ managers seeking pastures new as United’s schedule also stiffens – Jose Mourinho’s men face Liverpool, Spurs and Chelsea over their next four fixtures.

Spurs’ Dele Alli (27.4%) is just below Mkhitaryan in the transfers-out table as more than 96,000 FPL bosses have reacted to a barren spell in which he hasn’t scored in the league since Gameweek 3.

Alli did provide two assists in Gameweek 6’s win over West Ham and followed that up with another one for England last night as he was fouled for the decisive penalty in the Three Lions’ underwhelming 1-0 win in Lithuania.

Spurs’ schedule is another that is turning tough – BOU LIV mun CRY ars – and trust in Alli is suffering as a result.

The same can’t be said for Alli’s team-mate Christian Eriksen (25.7%), who scored for Denmark for the second consecutive match, converting a penalty in the Danes’ 1-1 draw with Romania.

Chelsea defender Andreas Christensen and Leicester City keeper Kasper Schmeichel played the full 90 minutes alongside Eriksen, with FPL managers divided as to the midfielder’s appeal – nearly 44,000 have moved him out this week, with another 36,000+ acquiring his services.

It’s Kane…again

One Spurs player seemingly impervious to the matter of fixtures is Harry Kane.

The in-form striker scored the winner in Lithuania – his second goal of the international break – and also has six goals from his last four league matches.

That run has persuaded over 280,000 managers to make him FPL’s most bought player of the Gameweek, although he played the full 180 minutes of October’s international schedule.

England boss Gareth Southgate chopped and changed over that break, with the 14.0%-owned Man City full-back Kyle Walker given the night off in Vilnius. Spurs’ Kieran Trippier (4.3%) took his place.

On the other flank, West Ham’s Aaron Cresswell played at left wing-back as the 11.4%-owned Southampton defender Ryan Bertrand returned to his club as a precaution following recent back problems.

The 8.7%-owned United striker Marcus Rashford did start both matches, however, as did Walker’s team-mate John Stones (7.9%).

But another City man, Raheem Sterling (6.1%) watched on from the bench.

Mustafi adds to Gunners’ concerns…

Arsenal centre-half Shkodran Mustafi lasted only 36 minutes of Germany’s 5-1 win over Azerbaijan before limping off with a thigh problem.

German coach Joachim Low appears pessimistic on the prognosis for the defender.

“I think Mustafi has a muscle tear. It looks a bit more serious. A hamstring injury to a muscle tear, we have to wait for the exact diagnosis, but he’ll probably be out for a long time.”

With Laurent Koscielny missing the Gameweek 7 victory over Brighton with ongoing Achilles problems, Arsene Wenger’s defence is suddenly appearing uncertain ahead of their visit to Watford next weekend.

The Gunners have kept four consecutive clean sheets prior to that Gameweek 8 trip, with Nacho Monreal collecting over 75,000 new owners as the third most signed defender over the break.

Calum Chambers is also recovering from a hip problem, so it would appear that Rob Holding (4.7) is set to retain his start in the back three should Mustafi – as expected – be sidelined for a sustained period.

Emre Can and Antonio Rudiger scored for the Germans, while Leroy Sane provided an assist in a convincing victory.

The Liverpool and Man City players started and finished the match, while Chelsea’s Rudiger came on in the 22nd minute.

Elsewhere…

A Chris Brunt own goal proved decisive in Norway’s 1-0 win over Northern Ireland.

Bournemouth’s Josh King missed the fixture with a hamstring problem picked up in Norway’s 8-0 drubbing of San Marino on Thursday, but Brunt, Gareth McAuley, Jonny Evans and Steven Davis all played the full match for the visitors.

Andrew Robertson, Darren Fletcher and Matty Phillips started and finished Scotland’s 2-2 draw in Slovenia, while Crystal Palace’s James McArthur played 79 minutes.

Jonty made a great point about Hazard earlier in that at 10.5 he'd need to be producing scores akin to last year. Is he a strong choice for Chelsea attacking coverage going forward?

Cheers Doos. Midfield is a minefield this year. Looks like it's defence and strike force where the points are to be made.

Depends on your team. If you can afford whilst being happy with the value in every spot of your team, then it's a no-brainer to bring him in, because for me he has the best points potential of all midfielders (besides maybe Sanchez) at the moment. The problem is that this scenario is unlikely for most people, even WCers, because many people want to spend money in midfield where they can be disappointed with the value they find unless they go for Sterling or more expensive options. That often leaves very little money for more obvious (good) value premium choices in defence and attacck. Morata, for example, if fit, is a much more obvious, better value choice than Hazard.

I personally used the same rationale to get Sanchez. I can afford the luxury because I went heavy in where I saw value in the team (defence and attack), and prioritised absolute points in midfield in midfield (just Sanchez).

      tl;dr yes and no

Cheers mate. Very good insight. Batshuyai was going to be my choice of Chelsea attacker but Vardy's fixtures look good too.

Also have to think of the captaincy. I'm personally still unsure of captaining him away - his hauls have mainly been at Stamford Bridge historically. Also I have a slight question mark as to how Chelsea will do without Morata and Kante - two huge players for them.

So with Kane the default captain for me and many others most of the time I'd be looking to spend 10m+ on a player that is a great alternative captain when Kane has tricky fixtures. So for eg Salah or Coutinho in GWK 10.

I'm sort of wait and see with Hazard.

Mane was my most captained player last season. This year I've not owned a Liverpool player yet. Read into that what you will 😀

I'm looking to bring him in and field a starting 11 of:

        Forster
        Davies, Cresswell, Holding
        Richarlson, Ritchie, Hazard, Chop
        Lukaku, Kane, Jesus

        Elliot, Mbemba, Naughton, Carroll

SOT look to have a strong chance of CS in the next 4, Holding will come in with Mustafi/Kos injury/problems, Ritchie has a fine run of fixtures for NEW (I expect the flag to drop), and Richarlson could exploit a rather fragile looking ARS. I'm overall quite happy with it even with the majority of the budget going to 4 players. I'm not looking to get in any LIV cover until gw 10 when they face HUD. I don't see a huge attacking return for the Reds with Utd, @Spurs in the next 2. Just my 2 cents. Good luck.

Just make your gut move, it's all well and good following xG and reports, but at the end of the day it's all up in the air. Hazard is a fine option moving forward and the fixtures line up nicely. We all know he can hit a 16pt week explosion, will it be against CP? Possible. I'd take my chances on it.

depends where he plays as well.
Is he going to line up as a 10 or not?
Wasn't there a piece last season about him being far moreuseful FPLwise when he was out on the left?

I don't like Pedro personally - Fab seems safer. I'm not sure I see the appeal of Courtois, esp with a playing 4.0 in Elliot. You have a benching headache already, which is never a sensible play. It would make more sense to redistribute the money and bring in Loftus at 4.5.

This is very similar to my draft atm except I have cheaper defense and Eriksen over Coutinho.

I plan to change 2 of Eriksen/Silva/Sterling/Jesus for Morata and/or Liverpool mids (depending on performance) when Liverpool fixtures ease in 2 weeks and we find out what's happening with Morata.

Do you have similar plans or just gonna stick with 3 city attackers?

I am still torn on 3 City. I think I am going to go with Sterling-Eiksen-Coutinho as my midfield and downgrade the defence a little.

I watched the Brighton game and thought Arsenal were kind of strolling in the park. They were playing very lazily but still Brighton couldn't do anything. I don't think they were bad. Have to see a tough fixture to make a judgement.

Keep Kola - Luiz's lack of offensive returns limit him - Kola on the other hand will score well offensively. Chelsea will keep less clean sheets this season too.

I'm not sold on Jones this week being a Salah owner.

I'll be freeing some funds up with Mkhitaryan > Sterling, worth doing Hegazi > Southampton or Stones for a hit. Thinking more long term too giving me a 4 at the back option.

Davies, Mbemba, Mee my defense. Atsu and Carroll my 4 mid

I think that I am going to pass on Chelski, until GW 14. By then, I will almost certainly have more team value, and therefore be able to afford them. As good as CHE : cpl 474 WAT 691 are, I can't afford a dropped clean sheet at 6.6. In addition, I have Davies, Otamendi and Montreal, none of whom are going anywhere. None of the Chelski attackers are showing much form, and so they are out.

Sad to miss out on those fixtures, but there it is.

I'm leaning this way too, Doos. Alonso is the big tempter for me; his underlying stats last year were so extraordinary. I'm just a little sceptical over their attacking potential without Morata, and defensively it seems like there are cheaper defenders - Cedric, Davies, etc. - who have almost the same clean sheet potential with similar (or in the case of Davies, greater) attacking potential.

That said, still considering Alonso + Silva over Richarlison + Alli on my WC!

Pretty happy - the plan would be to keep Sterling for three to four weeks, then downgrade to Richarlison/Choupo or whoever emerges in that bracket over the meantime. He's a good way to store short-term funds with a decent chance of some rises. Jesus is a Morata/Lukaku placeholder right now; whilst Silva, if I brought him in, would probably be the long-term City keeper.

What the numbers you post connote?

And I think avoiding them is acceptable, because of the injuries. Morata and Kante are big loses. I'm not convinced about them this season either - they were poor against Arsenal and City, and I think teams have got use to their tactics now. I expect a regression in defensive performance too. I can't understand so many Kola - Luiz posts.
