The Knee Jerk – Gameweek 8

Manchester City are threatening to break Fantasy Football.

An irresistible attacking force, they appear to be capable of skittling any defence that stands in their way and, in doing so, they are presenting Fantasy managers with an extraordinary array of options.

The challenge, of course, is to exploit their incredible form to the full. This becomes a more thankless task with the passing of each and every Gameweek.

Today’s 7-2 victory over a shell-shocked Stoke City took Pep Guardiola’s side to a total of 17 goals from their last three home matches and 24 from the last five Gameweeks.

I had to go back and re-check those numbers, leaving me wonder if we’ve ever seen a single team provide such a relentless avalanche of Fantasy points.

The underlying statistics are even more staggering.

A tally of 103 shots, 73 of which have arrived in the box with 28 big chances. Guardiola’s side have fired a shot every 4.6 minutes over the past five Gameweeks.

Three City players scored double figures in today’s victory, with Kevin De Bruyne and David Silva also fetching nine and seven points respectively. And this without Sergio Aguero in the mix.

Indeed, the array of choice available has become bewildering.

Raheem Sterling’s 15-points surely underlines his potential during this, his most prolific spell of his career. The “winger” has now scored six goals and supplied two assists over five starts in the last six Gameweeks.

Sterling has been in Guardiola’s starting line-up each time when available from Gameweek 3 onwards and, priced at just 8.0; he surely justifies his rank at the top of our midfield Watchlist. He is already the top transfer target ahead of Gameweek 9’s visit from Burnley.

Then there is Sane.

Perhaps a more traditional wide player, less inclined to tuck inside to flank the central striker, the German has produced four goals and three assists from the last five Gameweeks. However, he has only made the starting line-up over the last three.

De Bruyne and Silva remain the creators. Less explosive, they are nonetheless consistent points scorers that also scream for our attention. The latter struck his first goal of the season today, while De Bruyne chalked up a fifth assist.

It’s difficult to separate the pair, but Silva’s price, at 1.5 cheaper, is surely a key factor. Crucially, as today’s goal indicated, the Spaniard also appears to have upped his direct threat to opponents, adding a new convincing string to his creative bow.

These are just the standout midfield offerings. When we start to contemplate the situation up front, our decision process becomes even more cloudy.

Gabriel Jesus reacted to Sergio Aguero’s return from injury with a brace and a 13-point return today. We now have to consider how Guardiola will marry the pair.

He will surely want to avoid disrupting the almost perfect blend he has discovered, and neither Sane nor Sterling can really warrant exclusion.

Could that lead to Guardiola rotating his two central strikers, or will he revert back to pairing them in attack, sacrificing one of his support attackers?

Jesus owners will be counting today’s points but also looking ahead to the Gameweek 9 meeting with Burnley and wondering Pep’s next move.

But surely we have to question whether Jesus and Aguero warrant our investment regardless.

Even if their minutes are managed from here on, while City’s thirst for goals remains unquenchable, perhaps we just can’t lose.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

What if i told you Sterling started 22 of the first 25 pl games last season yeilding 6 goals and 10 assists in that period

Being in the form he's in and more matured as a player cant see him getting rotated regularly . Agree ?

    {when he got rotated (started 6 of last 13 last season) he got only only 1 goal and 1 assist .rotation dampens his rhythm and pep should realize it}

I think Pep loves him and agree he will get constant minutes. The issue with City is they have just so many options and as soon as the inevitable floodgates open, changes are made.

yh thing is some people are exaggarating too much. he may be rested for an odd game if there is cl midweek

but other than that cant see him getting rotated regularly

The who rotation thing is exaggerated, he's been more stable than last year, it's there for all to see.

He's managing the mins of his squad because he has a bench full of Internationals, Bernardo can't even get a game and would walk into most teams but Pep has been true to his key men this year.

So many people psyched themselves out over rotation on here last week, I guess it backfired for them yesterday.

It's like when picking Sanchez or talking about City, they look at last season and not what's happening now.

      Silva Jesus.

      Then either Kun or KDB.

First two are nailed on, the other lads expensive.
Sterling greatest rotation risk so wont consider. Sane if either Jesus or Kun injured for me.

Ergo Silva and Jesus my must haves.

Simply look at the competition for places - 3 midfielders have started every game, either Kun or Jesus will start, probably both so 5 attacking places taken ... that leaves everyone else chasing the last midfield spot in a 433. Sterling Sane B Silva Gun Yaya

Not saying Sterling will not play and is probably the best of the rest but he is obviously going to be more susceptible to rotation than Fernandinho, Silva, KdB, Kun, Jesus ?

You claim to have nothing to do but then admits to having having Mounie? Ffs. Sort that out and stop talking pony about benching Coutinho. If you've got a 9.0 mill player he plays every week. Simple.

Nope, but I have 2FT's, and my team is actually not poor, just that I have owned all the players when they weren't scoring, Jesus, Sterling, Antonio, Kane, De Bruyne, Alli, just name them.

Like I said, I owned when they didn't do shit. Jesus at the start, Sterling when he scored and got a red card or something, KDB at the start, don't even talk about Antonio.

The doubts around Harry Kane are starting to creep in for me. Is he really a season keeper? Maybe not, and heres why.

    - His home form
A big reason why we pay a premium for him is the fact that we can captian him home and away. Ive only captained him twice, both times were for his home blanks. The other weeks I captained Lukaku and Aguero, where they've produced every time they've had the armband. I'm paying for someone who I'm too afraid to captain.

    - The alternatives
Lukaku, for constantly being labled a troll, has stepped up to be a reliable captain option. Hes been consistent when the fixtures are in his favour.
Aguero has both assist and goal potential. Could a Aguero - Jesus double up be viable?
Morata has brilliant fixtures coming up and has been relatively consistent and provides good value at his price.

    -Eriksen
We are actually seeing Eriksen being more consistent, and has a high involvement in Spurs goals. Could he maybe be the one to have instead of Kane? Hes also producing at a fraction of the cost of Kane. We can dump Kane and keep Eriksen as a buffer.

    Conclusion:
I think everyone is so reluctant to even think of dumping him, because we know what hes capable of, and we fear not having him. After all, he his the golden boot winner for 2 years running, and the top forward in the league.

There's obviously a lot to be considered, but theres a clear argument to dump Kane in favour of cheaper captain alternatives, and now might be the perfect time ahead of a tough schedule, combined with home games where we won't dare captian him out of fear he blanks. Maybe we should consider making the leap, surge up the ranks while Kane struggles and wait until he proves he can score at Wembley.
