Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Gameweek 8 – Monday

Two moments of quality emerged from Monday night’s Gameweek 8 climax. Unfortunately, neither were from significant Fantasy assets, and both wiped out the clean sheets on offer.

Here’s the notes on Monday night’s encounter at the King Power Stadium.

Mahrez steals Vardy’s thunder

It was left to Riyad Mahrez (8.4) to rescue a point for Leicester City, atoning for a dreadful miss earlier in the match, as the Algerian snaffled up Islam Slimani’s knock-down to drill the Foxes equaliser.

Owned by just 3.6% of Fantasy Premier League managers, Mahrez is unlikely to convince as a potential asset in the current landscape, with midfielders from Man City in particular currently dominating his price bracket.

Monday’s goal was his first of the season which has arrived from 18 shots so far, with just four hitting the target.

But Mahrez tops the Leicester ranks for attempts overall, with Jamie Vardy (8.6) back on 15 having mustered just a single effort on Monday night.

Vardy was partnered with Kelechi Iheanacho (6.7) who surprisingly replaced Shinji Okazaki (5.6) in the starting XI. The Japanese international stayed at home over the break, so Craig Shakespeare’s decision was unexpected. Over 51,000 managers had signed Okazaki prior to Gameweek 8.

That was dwarfed by the 294,000 who moved for Vardy. They will have been disappointed by Monday night’s showing but will remain confident of returns from forthcoming fixtures with Swansea (a), Everton (h) and Stoke City (a).

Foster misses out as Baggies are breached

Ben Foster’s injury was the big pre-match news, confirming reports on Saturday that he had sustained a problem in training.

A knee complaint, the full prognosis is not yet known, but Foster remains a doubt for the visit to Southampton in Gameweek 9.

It seems the injury was sustained while Foster played with his son on the garden. A freakish setback which Tony Pulis described as “an enormous worry”.

“At the moment we don’t know exactly what it is. He was playing with his son in the back garden and he’s just tweaked his knee and we’re a little bit concerned because he’s had the cruciate. There was no way in a million years we were going to take the risk with him.”

Boaz Myhill stepped in but was unable to prevent Mahrez’ second-half leveller. Indeed, the stand-in keeper suffered his own injury – confirmed by the player himself as a dead leg. He will need to be assessed ahead of the St Mary’s trip with the 21,993 managers who have Myhill in reserve for Foster now facing the unlikely prospect of having no active goalkeeper.

West Brom’s defence have now kept just a single clean sheet in their last six Gameweeks ahead of a gruelling run of fixtures. Man City (h), Chelsea (h) and Spurs (a) all loom in the next five Gameweeks.

That run is also unlikely to promote any interest in Nacer Chadli (5.7) despite his superb dead-ball strike for the Baggies goal.

The Belgian was making his first start of the season, having been out of favour to this point, while also struggling with a recurring hamstring injury.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Lads. I need help with this team.
    Current team
    Elliot/Foster
    Kola/Bavis/Otamendi/Maguire/Clark
    Salah/Eriksen/Jese/Carrol/Chalobah
    Kane/Jesus/Vardy
    2 FT 0,1 ITB
    Considered moves:
    1) Kola and Jese to Zaha and Jones
    2) Vardy and Jese to Sterling and Diouf
    3) Kola and Vardy to Morata (if healthy) and Francis/Dunk
    4) Davis to Zappacosta
    5) Just replace one injured player Foster or Chalobah and roll 1 FT
Two first option should be executed today due to potential price rise
    Thanks in advance.

So you're comparing a player who's started every game with a player who's only started 4 games. Seems legit.

And even then, it's equal. Alonso 14, Sane 14. Are you making up lies to win an argument now?

                  It was weak anyway. 😀

His argument is that the difference between a wingback and a mid is the number of penalty area touches. And that having more penalty area touches than KDB and Mkhi make him comparable to them. Ridiculous. You don't get points for penalty area touches. You get them for converting those touches into goals/assists, which he hasn't done for the last 6 weeks. Mids actually convert them. He's a wingback, so he does it less often than mids.

Speaking of weak arguments, apparently Alonso has scored more goals than both of those players he ISN'T COMPARABLE to.........

More peno touches, more shots, more goals.......what are you getting it? Just admit he's a massive threat.

Hazard is 3m more so I guess your answer to my question is no?

You can argue there is a better Chelsea defender than Alonso but that’s not my question. Nor does it support any claims your post is making.

            • 7 Years

If there's a better Chelsea defender, there is no reason to even argue about whether Alonso is a 'mid' or not.

In FPL, he's classified as a defender, period. There's a better option there. The whole argument about him being a mid only started because people said he'll score points like a 7m mid would. But he can't even keep up with a 6.5m defender, so who cares?

Among 7m mid, only Richarlison, Gross and Doucoure outscore him and none of them are in the top 6 team. (Someone correct me if I’m wrong).

So among 7m mid, I’ll still get Alonso who’s in a top 6 team?

Of course if you’ve got a crystal ball and know pre-season the above 3 players are scoring like they are now, then that’s a different story.

              1. Cok3y5murf
                • 7 Years
                6 years, 6 months ago

The strategy should not be to pick the best 7m mid, but to simply assess whether a player will deliver value for money. Will Alonso deliver enough points for 7m? I was unsure pre-season, so I didn't pick him. I didn't care if he played for a top 6 team.

You have to remember that a large share of his points still came from clean sheets last season, and Chelsea had plenty of them. Cahill scored goals and assists last season too, does it matter that he played like a centre back rather than a mid? The only thing that matters is points. David Luiz is 1m cheaper and can get those himself. So David Luiz + 1m is just as good as Alonso (if you use that 1m well). But no one talked about Luiz. People treated Alonso like he was some kind of value pick for 7m, when he really wasn't. He was more or less fairly priced, and without clean sheets, he's too expensive.

hi emre, i'm new to this topic but think the point is too reactionary. alonso is a 7mil mid who falls back on clean sheets for me. doesn't mean he's the best 7mil mid out there. a fail vs palace and conceding vs man city (combined with a very unlucky fail vs stoke as the fact is chelsea did keep a clean sheet there) doesn't really conclusively prove anything. he's clearly a goal threat in a solid defence, albeit one currently missing kante. is a season game, you can make any point you want about anyone if you pick the right isolated windows

"a 7mil mid who falls back on clean sheets"

For this statement to be true, he needs to match other 7m mids in goals/assists. And there is no way he is matching a 7m mid say Zaha, in goals/assists. So why call him a mid? Call him a wingback who gets clean sheets. Just like Walker, Davies, etc.

A wingback's large share of points still comes from clean sheets, with goals/assists only every now and then. If Chelsea aren't keeping enough clean sheets, he's too expensive.

"unlucky fail vs Stoke" - you don't need Alonso for that clean sheet. Luiz can get you that. In terms of goal threat, he's had 2 goals in GW2 and none in the last six weeks. What kind of 'mid' blanks six weeks in a row?

7mil mids sometimes blank 6 weeks in a row. he's called a mid because he's so attacking, obviously he's literally a wing-back and that seems to be half the issue here, taking some things literally, others not. imo if you have to reduce a player to a few words the 7mil mid with clean sheets is a pretty good effort. don't think i've ever been scared of a defender when watching games as a non owner until alonso rocked up last season

                  16/17

                  31 Apperances
                  15 Clean Sheets
                  6 Goals
                  5 Assists

Thats 173 points form 2 per apperance, 4 per CS, 6 per Goal & 3 per Assist, that's without any bonus points.

That's average 5.58 points per game.

                  This Season:

                  17/18

                  8 Apperances
2 Clean Sheets (Should be 3, came off after 58 mins vs Stoke)
                  2 Goals
                  0 Assists

Thats averaging 4.5 points per game without bonus added on. Yes he's a bit behind last season but I'm sure he'll catch up, you won't find me knee jerking him out.

Find me a better 7.0m midfielder over the past season and a bit.

I had him throughout last season too.

He doesn't need to just keep up this season, he needs to do better. Because last season he was 5.9m (starting price when people started getting him if I'm not wrong), this season he's 7m. If not for the price difference, we would've all had him in our teams from GW1.

Again, find me a better 7.0m or less Midfielder. Don't worry I'll do it for you, this season on the FPL site it shows Alonso averaging 4.1 points per match.

Of the Midfielders that have played over 360 minutes (4/8 games so half I thinks fair) there are 3 midfielders 7.0m or cheaper that are averaging more:

                      Richarlison - 6.2m - 5.6 ppm
                      Groß - 5.7m - 5.3 ppm
                      Doucoureb - 5.3m - 5.0 ppm

I'd still rather have Alonso, of the above I am thinking about Richarlison but I'll still be keeping Alonso if I do.

But why are you comparing him with 7m mids?

Consider him as a 7m player. His position isn't relevant when looking at value for money. He's a 7m player with 4.1 ppm.

I'll name several options that are cheaper with higher ppm.

                        Bailly - 6.2m - 6.3 ppm (without even playing 2 games)
                        Valencia - 6.6m - 6.6 ppm
                        Ward - 4.6m - 5.4 ppm
                        Fonte - 4.9m - 5.2 ppm

These options are even better value for money than those mids you mentioned. So why are you comparing him with mids? You should be comparing him with these defenders and swap him for one of them.

Because of where he is playing in games, he's practically a winger. Have you seen his heat maps.

He's practically an out of position player but in a good way, Delph would be and example of an out of position player in a bad way. Classed as a midfielder but playing in Defense, so gets no clean sheet points and also is playing further back.

Alonso is the reverse, playing pretty much in midfield but classed as a defender so you get attacking returns but also clean sheet points.

Have you seen how many shots those players you listed have had in comparision:

                        Alonso - 14
                        Fonte - 7
                        Valencia - 6
                        Bailly - 3
                        Ward - 3

More than double Valancia! Yes that hasn't translated into the points we have hoped as yet but I won't be getting rid, there will be a double digit point haul sooner or later and no doubt it will be followed by a few more.

I think people are looking for reasons to transfer him out because they need the funds elsewhere, that's fine but I think people are trying to over justify the transfer out.

not sure this is fair either, just because he was 5.9 last season it doesn't mean that was what he was worth, so doesn't need to do any better than last season. his price now is more representative, that's why it's a great debate (why i assume this was made green), it's not obvious to have him like last season. and because it's a good debate the 7mil mid with clean sheets tag was presumably created to justify/argue the case for. a few 7mil mids will likely get more goals and assists than him, just as a few 6mil mids will probably do too. there will also be a lot of 7mil mids who can't beat an estimate of about 6 goals 6 assists. also a difference to last season is the extra price may mean instead of buy and keep he's a guy you dip in and out with (ooo er) chasing those 6 point goals. then it becomes a fixtures thing and season totals are less relevant.

to side-step slightly i think an issue this season is not so much the price but europe, his stamina is one of his biggest assets but there's no way conte is happy him starting every league and cl game.

    Morning

I'm coasting along in mediocrity at the moment (c. 750k OR). Need to decide where to downgrade to free up to do Firmino > Morata I think.
Now that I finally have evidence that Vardy really isn't worth the bandwagon (I prefer form over fixtures), my choices are less simple.

All of the obvious switches leave me 0.1m short so I am stuck. I have starred the players I can feasibly lose/ downgrade. Any wise moves to recommend?

    1FT £1.1m itb
    Elliot, Foster
    Alonso(*), Bavies(*), Monreal, Mbemba, Schindler
    Eriksen, Silva, Ritchie(*), Carroll, RLC

I know they say don't take hits for defenders but what would you do with this bunch?

    Davies, Kolasinac, Mee, Lowe, TAA

0FT, 1.6m ITB. Save or take a hit?

Kola > Jones. United clean sheet locked in this weekend, and saves you an extra 0.8 before he rises
