The Big Numbers – Gameweek 8

Our usual post-Gameweek members’ article arrives this afternoon, as we take a look at some of the main performers over the previous round of fixtures.

Key midfielders from Man City and Spurs are assessed, while we also analyse Liverpool’s attack since the return of Philippe Coutinho.

Meanwhile, our new expected goals numbers highlight how Wilfried Zaha thrived up front upon his return to the Eagles’ fold.

        Naugton Mee Cedric Azpi Mbemba
Hazard Salah Alli Carrol Loftus C.
        Lukaku Kane 4.5

beacuse my team is crap i need some City players and i dont want to lose Liverpul mid, have 2 transvers so i want Alli out for one city and Mbemba to Jones and next week Lukaku out for Aguer.

Do u have some better idea for me?

What's your intended formation? My instinct would be to go Alli out for Sterling, but then upgrade one of Carroll and RLC. I think that would up your potential points in both defense through rotation, as well as attack.

    Elliot
    Luiz, Davies, Cresswell
    Hazard, Silva, Sterling, Richarlison
    Kane, Lukaku (c), Joselu

    Pope; RLC, Dunk, Hunemeier

    1FT, 0.0 ITB.

A bit itchy to get rid of Davies, at least for the next four. What to do?

Earlier today Jonty posted an excellent Hot Topic on Balance and Flexibility. In the hope that this small article might attain HT status I am outlining an extension to that approach called "Proactivity". According to Wikipedia this means "Proactive behavior involves acting in advance of a future situation, rather than just reacting. It means taking control and making things happen rather than just adjusting to a situation or waiting for something to happen." Well I've done just that over the past 3 weeks and moved up from 1033739th to 58474th - so feeling just a little proud I would like to share this with you and at the same time.

I have resisted all bandwagons up to now...no Kane is a great example.. and this has allowed me to be a bit more flexible with my line up. In using my wildcard in GW6 I brought in Aguero, Morata and Vardy and like many of you suffered the later injuries to the first two players. I have not been afraid to spend 4 points in a gameweek in order to get the desired lineup as quickly as possible. I would be willing to spend 8 points if the situation warranted but have yet to resort to this. My formations have changed over the weeks as has the money applied to defence, midfield and strikers. I have used the Members site to check player comparisons where necessary and get an overview of statistical data - but I am not subservient to this. I have applied thought process to both form and fixtures but above all else if I wanted a player in my squad I would find a way of getting him in but would be patient in the approach. One of the key changes I have made this season is to monitor the FPL Price Change Statistics website so as to both build value in my squad and to time my transfers in order to meet the earlier objective. Last week I tripled on Man City attack and it paid dividends - captaining Sterling in the process.

So I have been aiming to get Richarlison for quite a while now but have had inadequate funds until this week. With Davies situation unclear along with some tough fixtures to follow I sacrificed him for a 4.9m defender and swapped out Kante at the cost of 4 points. I now have my desired midfield of Eriksen/Sterling/Silva/Richarlison/Atsu - all players I would be happy to play most weeks - zero funds! My strike force remains flexible so i can focus on improving the defence when opportunities arise.

It worked this time, but another time, you might have been disappointed. Proactivity is a nice word, but taking transfers cost points (and/or FTs), and you won't always get the points back. Just saying. Congratulations on the warm, fuzzy smug feelings though 🙂

Thanks Deulofail - I have actually decided that unless the situation is desparate or it fits in with my overall strategy I would not spend 4 points on a defender. Thanks for allowing me the warm smug feelings!

I'd probably wait a week or 2, see if he's playing still, and if not switch to a Bournemouth or Palace defender. If you'd rather have a premium option, a Chelsea defender (possibly better from GW14 when fixtures are amazing and Kante should be back)

    Foster / Elliot

Yes. A mixture of tough home games and tricky away games all the way up to GW17 after GW10. Plus, we're relying on his clean sheets at the moment for points, he's showing little attacking threat for his price.

Cedric has one of the worst fixture runs from GW 12.

Daniels, on the other hand, has sublime fixtures from GW 11. Gets attacking points and Bournemouth are tightening up at the back. Thu, the love. 😉

Well, I want to ditch Cedric but feel with WBA, brt, BUR next up there's a decent chance of at least one CS.

Seems like a waste of a FT to move him on before then although Kola, Cedric to Luiz, Stones has tempted me a bit.

      Aye.

Swansea at home looks a profitable fixture for him and you just know the minute you sell is the minute he gets a clean sheet and a headed winner.

There is no way in hell I want a 6.0 Arsenal defender playing against Man City however, as I expect that to be a bloodbath - will sell in the run up to that.

I have TAA first on the bench and Jorge didn’t play. Trying to make the switch but it’s not allowed. Is it because it’s going to be made automatically? Appreciate your help!

Yeah, same here. Not sure what's going to happen.

        For the others,
Even if I change my captain, the other auto-subs should still happen right? Have 2 non-players and TAA and some Petretta guy ready to come in. Need a Messi haul today.

Same position re Messi. Let’s hope we get our 12 points of the bench! Should be the case but not sure.

You can only make manual substitutions if your benched player hasn't played yet.

If you make no manual substitutions, there will be an automatic sub in which case TAA will come on. If you've made other manual substitutions, TAA stays on bench.

Wait, so if I 2 no shows and TAA and Petretta who hasn't played on the bench, then subbing in Petretta will mean I only play with 10, even if TAA could sub in? I wasn't sure on the rules, so only changed the captains.

The relevant rule from the Fantasy UCL website:

"If no manager substitutions or captain changes are made, automatic substitutions will take place at the end of the Matchday, when all fixtures have been played"

This to me implies that even if you've only changed your captain there are no automatic substitutions.

Why didn't you have yesterday's players all in your starting XI? Not feasible formation-wise?

OMG! This is insane. Oh, I just didn't know how substitutions worked and so I played my best XI.

Yeah it doesn't feel 'normal' next to FPL, that's bad luck. Personally, I was used to it because it was the same in Fantasy Euro '16. Basically you have to make sure to always have Tuesday's players on the pitch and then do your subs when the line-ups are announced for Wednesday. (I had Handanovic starting vs. Liverpool for instance, even though I was fairly sure I'd end up playing Areola)

So, in any case, I was stuck with a useless Obamayang 4 pointer and TAA coming in or switching to Messi captain and losing out on TAA points. Why is this silly game so complicated!

It was actually thanks to this post that I made my substitutions in time - all my players blanked yesterday so a captain change at the very least was necessary.

Not sure what it is with this week for me, all my picks in all competitions have done absolutely nothing!

I never changed my captain last week because of the early deadline. This game has been a proper disaster for me.

Thanks. Youre right. And I now read the following on a Newcastle site:

"Rafa has trust issues with both (Mitrovic and Mbemba), having doubts over their ability to carry out his specific tactical instructions on the pitch".

    1 FT

    Do I do

    a) Alli > Silva
    b) Alli > Hazard
    c) Brady > Richarlison (will likely do this next week if not this week)

I have Kane and Sterling for context. All options are affordable

Thanks. That would mean Brady would become Choupu Menting instead of Richarlison next week as couldn't afford.

You confident on Hazard to return?

    Next GW team:

    Elliot
    BDavies Jones Simpson Kola
    Sterling Atsu Eriksen
    Kane Kaku(C) Jesus

    Subs: Fabianski, Carroll, Chalobah, Mbemba

    Still wondering:
    1) Elliot or Fabianski if Fabianski plays vs Simpson
    2) Lukaku as C

Bench Simpson and play Tarroll instead.
Captain Lukaku fo sho -- the safest option.

So after Aguero warmed the bench midweek, what are we expecting from the lineup come weekend?

An Aguero start because Jesus has played two games? Or the opposite, to not disrupt their lineup, and Jesus to get hooked early if they're winning?

      • 8 Years

I’m not expecting anything tbh. Just hoping that he starts really. If I was to guess I’d say Jesus starts and Kun joins him or that Jesus starts and gets subbed for Kun around the 60 minute mark.

So, if we have 4.3m in the bank for a defender, our best hope is to predict whom madman Koeman starts right? Holgate/Martina.

Best for this weekend's coming fixtures?

    B. Abraham, Rodriguez, KDB, Sanchez, Arnautovic

How do these moves look for a -4?

    Kane + Chalobah + Bavies > Morata
    + Zaha + Jones.
Could maybe skip last transfer to avoid the hit.

    Krul Elliott
    Alonso Davies Kolasinac Cresswell Hunemeier
    Eriksen Sterling Chalobah Cork Carroll
    Kane Lukaku Vardy
