Dugout Discussion – West Ham vs Brighton

A third Friday night kick-off of the season brings us to the London Stadium and a Gameweek 9 opener between West Ham and Brighton.

Sadly, the Fantasy interest in this fixture is somewhat limited.

The Hammers defence has kept three clean sheets in their last five Gameweeks, but that’s not been enough to keep left-back Aaron Cresswell in the starting XI.

Arthur Masuaku has been pushing for inclusion in recent Gameweeks, with impressive cameos from the bench that have brought two assists. He gets the nod tonight, with Cresswell dropping to the bench.

Elsewhere, Chicharito’s start always looked guaranteed once he was declared fit with Andy Carroll suspended. The Mexican – who is still owned by 15.7% – looks to be the lone striker in a 4-2-3-1, with an attacking trio of Michail Antonio, Manuel Lanzini and Marko Arnautovic patrolling behind.

Meanwhile Brighton – who make their second appearance on a Friday night – boast the 14.7% owned Pascal Gross.

He gained an assist at Bournemouth on his last Friday outing and has remained integral for the Seagulls, earning another assist in Sunday’s draw with Everton. He’s been involved in 83% of Brighton’s goals when on the pitch.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I'll just say this once now, because I said it at the beginning of the Season.

Our transfers were not only fool's gold, but in the case of Hart, poisonous as well.

Bilic needed to play both Noble and Adrián tonight, to show a bit of class, and to give the core of the team some hope. Also, to give Antonio some service, and Lanzini some back-up.

As it is, we have a useless forward, plus an arrogant midfielder who has already cost us points this Season, actually on the pitch.

Well done to the Seagulls - I hope they go on to have a great Season.

I can understand why Hart is no. 1 (not that I agree with it), but why has Noble been benched?

Sad to see. You have some players who have shown fight and spirit for the club over a number of years. They have been replaced by expensive signings who never fulfilled their potential at bigger clubs or where never that good in the first place.
For those us who don’t support the top 4-6 teams all we want to see is some effort, some passion and a team trying which Brighton have shown. Sadly lacking in terms of performance from West Ham tonight.

Hernandez isn't useless, the team needs to play to his strengths more than they are doing.
Agree 100% about Antonio and Arnie.

I agree - never been impressed by Arnie - comes across as having an ego nowhere near justified by his quality, wouldn't have him near my team if I was a premiership manager, not worth it

In a time when most clubs are buying young (under-23) players knowing if the transfer doesn't work out they will at least have some re-sale value, West Ham signing 4 players with an average age of 30 was quite a contrast. On paper you did need a RB, a CF and a GK but just going for well-known/experienced names to fill all these positions leaves the current team looking old (the average age in most games this season is 29+ and only WBA have named an older XI) and lacking pace/energy/desire. Meanwhile signing Arnautovic on a FIVE-year deal was probably the worst deal of the lot.

Wow crazy fall from grace for hart I remember him being amazing against Liverpool in his early city days and thought time at torino would bring him back. I am not a fan of international football but timr to promote Heaton or pickford

I have said this time and time again. West Ham and Palace recruit the wrong type of 'character'. If you are a London club you have to be careful (unless you are Arsenal, Chelsea and Spurs) because average players will come to you knowing you probably pay well and they will be living the good life in the big city. Hart, Arnie, Fonte, Zabaleta and Hernandez are past their best and are just looking for an easy life in London.

West Ham should have been buying Pickford, Keane, Gibson, Maguire, Robertson, Chalobah, RLC and Abraham. It would be fine for West Ham to say to them that if they get good they will not stand in their way to move to a big club. It works for West Ham (they go up the league and get money) and it works for the player (if they play well they get a big move).

Interestingly, it is different in Newcastle / Sunderland etc. There you attract decent players who try hard, but then their heads get turned by the quality of life in Manchester and London and they start giving up.
