The Knee Jerk – Gameweek 9

Just for a moment there, we thought we had Pep worked out.

After meticulously studying his selections, we were beginning to gain confidence that his days of meddling with our Gameweek tallies were over. We were almost complacent.

The tide of goals and points produced by his Manchester City side were more than a little seductive. But they were a siren song, tempting us to sail towards the rocky outlines of Raheem Sterling and Gabriel Jesus, only to be shipwrecked by Guardiola’s teamsheet.

We always knew that Sergio Aguero was pivotal to his selection today. Many expected the start for the Argentine, but the smart money was on both Sterling and, to a lesser extent, Jesus be alongside him.

Between them, that pair had picked up 673,000 new owners who, this evening, have just a single point to show for their investment.

More significantly, some 586,000 or 11.3%, had the armband with Jesus. That included 36 of the top 100 managers heading into Gameweek 9 – the top choice among that leading pack.

Meanwhile, others had him as their vice-captain with Sterling – who was a total no-show – as their primary skipper. A double-blow.

It appears that Guardiola was biding his time, welcoming us in and reassuring us, before hitting us with a sucker punch.

So now we have to regroup, assess the damage and attempt to decode this latest situation with new data.

There were perhaps two factors at play.

For one, City faced their toughest test so far in the Champions League against Napoli in midweek.

Secondly, maybe there was a desire to give Aguero the opportunity of a start at the Etihad with the club scoring record in his sights.

In the end, he scored the goal to equal Eric Brook’s record and, interestingly, Guardiola again acknowledged post-match the importance of achieving this milestone quickly.

“Sergio has not played for three weeks and it takes time to get that little bit of rhythm back. He needs to play minutes, he did it today and maybe on Tuesday again. It was important for him to equal the record as soon as possible. When he breaks it, it will be something special.”

That would hint that Aguero will get another run-out on home turf against Wolves in the EFL Cup – the chance to break the record in front of his own supporters, rather than at The Hawthorns in Gameweek 10. Perhaps.

We can only really speculate. But what is of more concern is that, with a second tie with Napoli to arrive after the West Brom clash, we have to presume that Guardiola will have this in mind.

City sit clear on top of their group; they can afford to drop points but, after 11 successive victories in all competitions, Guardiola will not want to scupper the current momentum.

With Aguero, Jesus and Sterling – along with Bernando Silva and Leroy Sane – once described as his “five strikers”, just how will Pep now approach matters?

Previously convinced that his “central strikers” – Aguero and Jesus – would be paired together, are we now to accept that Guardiola has broken from this pattern? And if so, can we really ride with that?

Tonight Aguero is already the most bought player ahead of Gameweek 10. Meanwhile, Jesus ranks second for sales.

However, there is every chance that Aguero will be saved for Napoli while Jesus starts against the Baggies in Gameweek 10.

While we can study his selection patterns further and make assumptions, we seem unlikely to crack Guardiola’s code.

If we are to invest in City’s attack, we have to accept the anxiety and disappointment witnessed today, else perhaps settle for David Silva and Kevin De Bruyne who, to this point, seem immune to the tinkerings.

It’s becoming a fascinating sub-plot to a season that continues to test and tease.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Any advice here-

    Elliot.
    Kolasinac, Mee, Yoshida.
    Choupo-Moting, Eriksen, Sterling, Atsu.
    Lukaku, Kane, Vardy.
    Fabianski, Jones, Carroll, Mbemba.

Richarlison + Aguero in for Atsu + Lukaku?

Lukaku can easily match Kane. Plus you'd want Lukaku for GW12's run of games

Yeah but you at the very least want Kane for the gw11 captaincy, if he flops then it's an easy switch to Lukaku

Skim read that tbh, Lukaku won't match Kane as he plays in a team that I predict will score fewer goals given how United look and how we know Spurs can play and because Kane is a better, more clinical striker than Kaku

Didn't finish this for some reason, hmm. ...But for the next 3 fixtures it would be an easy switch to Kaku if Kane blanks vs Palace as it shows us this Wembley thing is really playing on his mind

Jones has injured his quadriceps. Should be fine for the weekend is the news at the moment.
Wood has a small history of hamstring injuries in the past. He is a doubt.

Defenders too - the big teams take their turns in getting CS and hauls, so I'd rather just play them most weeks.

Bit of an interesting topic but how many goals do we predict the following strikers will score. For instance, don't really see Kaku hauling in a Mourinho team or scoring in big games so this will likely take down his tally from last season but he will get more big chances in smaller games.

    A) Kane
    B) Lukaku
    C) Aguero

Kane, Lukaku and Aguero will all score 25+ if they stay fit (and don't get rotated too much in the case of Aguero!). I'd say the same about Jesus but not with the current City rotation. So around 18-20 for Jesus and Morata for me.

No idea about Lacazette, I don't know what to make of him yet.

    Elliot (Foster)
    Cedric, Trippier, Daniels, Mee, Naughton
    Silva, Brady, Ritchie, Eriksen (Carroll)
    Kane, Lukaku, Vardy

    2FT and 0.2ITB

Thoughts on Brady, Lukaku -> Richarlison, Morata for free?

I'd wait on Morata, he was dreadful yesterday and Chelsea as a whole were off.

Aguero would nice if you can get him as long as you're not set on richarlison, maybe groB/Choupo + Kun in

Eriksen to Salah or Cout, or Vardy to Abraham (or a 4.5 and play 4-4-2, you'd have funds left over to upgrade elsewhere. Or swap naughton to a 3.9m fodder

Morata was the slowest, least involved player on the pitch. I don't know if that speaks to Watford being really good or him being bad/injured/bad matchup for his skill set though. I thought he might get some headers but the game didn't turn out that way as Watford were really, really good, not committing fouls in bad areas.

Interesting information guys, I think it was Kiwivillain who felt Morata hat trick was due to Stoke's injuries at the back & that his stats were inferior to his output so will be interesting to see how he does vs Bournemouth

Does Pedro interest anyone? Chelsea with some nice fixtures and he has looked good. Might be a nice alternative other than Hazard or Morata.

No, I’ve learnt from owning Willian before that the rotation risk for them doesn’t work out.

True but so far the City players at least get monster hauls when they play but the Chelsea guys blank more often.

I got Stones 2 weeks ago because I was 0.1 short of getting Otamendi because I missed Otamendi's price increase as I was flat tack at work due to the fact I live in NZ. Now I might go Stones to Otamendi with my ft. It is probably sideways but in a gw where Otamendi scores a goal & outscores Stones by 9 points it doesn't seem sideways at all. Thoughts appreciated.

It is very sideways, Stones has scored a couple this season already just not in the PL. could be his turn next week. I’d use your transfer elsewhere.

Thats just chasing points already gone. Stones has just as much chance of scoring as Otamendi. I'd just hold and hope that its Stones next time who scores. Every chance that it could be.

I think stats would point to Otamendi as the most likely one to score of the two.

But I agree with your point overall, it's not like Otamendi will go on a goal-scoring run.

Sideways, but if you have nothing else to worry about you could go for it. I'd save the FT myself. I don't see this dilemma to be as significant as the Coleman vs Baines situation was last year.

Thanks boys. I just had a thought I could actually double up with Otamendi & Stones in defense by going:
Jones out - Otamendi in for free.
MCI has - wba, ARS, leic, hudd, SOU, WHU

I have Sterling in m/f & I thought of getting Aguero but not sure on the Jesus/Aguero rotation aspect.
The common consensus is MCI attack focus for good reason but Stones & Otamendi are pretty nailed.
      Thoughts appreciated.

    Elliott
    Otamendi Jones(!) Ward
    Eriksen Salah Sterling Loftus-Cheek
    Kane Lukaku Vardy

    Krul... Carroll Fernandez Mbemba
    1 FT
    0.0 ITB

    A) Lukaku -> Kun
    B) Jones -> 5.1
    C) Eriksen+Vardy -> Rich+Kun (-4)

If he benched against Wolves then might risk Aguero but rotation risk a big issue. Think Salah is safer home to hudd which will be interesting as many have sold. Maybe a quick rebound in price this week

Not willing to ditch Morata just yet...that's why this confusion otherwise it would have been easy...how about

        Jones > Ward

Not sure about losing Sterling or Jones, depends on how badly you want to get Kun but in your position I'd be tempted to stick and use a ft on maybe RLC to a more nailed 4.5er or maybe consider Vardy to Firmino.
