Captains

Captain Poll – Gameweek 10

Preparations for Gameweek 10 begin in earnest this morning with the launch of our Captain Poll to canvass your views on the best armband options.

Inevitably, Harry Kane (12.7) is again expected to be among the front-runners for the armband for his trip to Old Trafford. He produced 32 points for the 18.4% of Fantasy Premier League managers who gave him the captaincy in Spurs’ 4-1 victory over Liverpool at Wembley.

Notably, some 55% of Kane’s 2.1 million managers chose alternative options for Gameweek 9, no doubt concerned by his form at Wembley Stadium to that point. Indeed, Kane’s brace and assist on Sunday were his first attacking points in a “home” fixture. However, in away matches, he has already dazzled, scoring six times, more than any other player.

That record bodes well ahead of the Manchester United clash, though Jose Mourinho’s rearguard are the only defence yet to concede on home turf.

Kane may benefit from the potential absence through injury of United defenders Phil Jones and Eric Bailly. Mourinho’s backline looked decidedly shaky against Huddersfield without that pairing, conceding twice once Jones had departed with his latest setback.

Since the weekend, 63,000+ FPL managers have swooped for Kane, while in sharp contrast United striker Romelu Lukaku’s (11.7) ownership has continued to decline, with more than 107,000 ditching him ahead of meetings with Spurs and Chelsea.

Although he’s delivered attacking returns in seven out of nine matches, the Belgian’s popularity as a captain has also dipped – he’s failed to notch double-digit returns since Gameweek 5.

With just two goals conceded on the road and only Manchester City handing home teams fewer shots, Spurs are expected to present Lukaku with his toughest Old Trafford test so far.

The threat of rotation may cool interest in the league leaders after Pep Guardiola opted to bench last week’s poll leader Gabriel Jesus (10.7) against Burnley. Guardiola also kept 15%-owned Raheem Sterling (8.2) as an unused substitute, who was captained by more than 111,000 FPL managers. Some 12,000 of those, or 10.8%, had Kane as their vice-captain.

Nevertheless, Man City’s trip to West Brom could be worth the risk, with the Sky Blues beating the Baggies 4-0 in the same fixture last season, which featured a brace from Sergio Aguero (11.6).

If any City asset is to dominate it is likely to be the Argentinian, who has already been acquired by 173,000+ FPL managers ahead of the next deadline.

While Tony Pulis’ side have only conceded three times in four Hawthorns ties in the league, they could be facing a defensive crisis, with both Jonny Evans and Craig Dawson early injury doubts.

The complexity of second-guessing Guardiola’s teamsheet may open the door for a Liverpool player to challenge at the top of the poll ahead of their home meeting with Huddersfield.

Only Manchester City and Arsenal have fired more shots at home than Jurgen Klopp’s side, who have scored eight times at Anfield.

Heading their cast of captaincy candidates should be the 32%-owned Mohamed Salah (9.1), whose goal against Spurs yesterday was his fifth of a campaign. He’s fired more shots in the penalty area (26) and shots on target (18) than any other FPL midfielder. Indeed, only Kane can better Salah for that second statistic.

Philippe Coutinho (9.0) is likely to challenge Salah’s claims. Since the Brazilian – who has two goals and an assist – returned to the first team in Gameweek 5, he’s second only to Kane for goal attempts, though 18 of his 21 efforts have arrived from outside the box.

However, Huddersfield’s defence should not be overlooked in this equation. They could provide stubborn resistance to Klopp’s attack – only three sides have allowed fewer shots (12) in away matches than the Terriers.

Despite his meagre 2.2% ownership, Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez (11.8) could also mount his first significant challenge for the captaincy, with Swansea City next at the Emirates Stadium.

The Chilean has delivered attacking returns in each of his last three starts, including a goal and assist in the Gunners 5-2 defeat of the Toffees – his first double-digit haul of the season.

Home comforts are also set to benefit Alexandre Lacazette (10.3), who has scored or assisted in three of his four Emirates encounters, including a brace against West Brom in Gameweek 6.

While Paul Clement’s side have only conceded once on their travels, the underlying statistics suggest they have been fortunate. Only Burnley and Leicester City have allowed more shots in away matches than the Swans’ defence (80), and both have played a game more than Clement’s men.

Chelsea’s options, and in particular Eden Hazard (10.6), may also gain some attention. They saw off Watford 4-2 on Saturday, though relied on a late rally to earn the three points. Hazard followed a Champions League brace against Roma midweek with an assist against Marco Silva’s side, his first in six league appearances.

A trip to face a Bournemouth defence that has claimed just a single clean sheet presents Hazard with a platform to register a first goal of the campaign. Eddie Howe’s rearguard have so far surrendered 19 big chances – or gilt-edged opportunities – only two sides have conceded more.

His team-mate Alvaro Morata is another contender – the Spaniard has four goals and 23 points in his last two away appearances for the Blues.

Another alternative armband option is Watford winger Richarlison (6.3), who already has three goals and four assists. The Brazilian, who has had more shots than any other midfielder this season, faces a Stoke City side that has conceded 20 goals, an unwanted Premier League high.

The popularity of Leicester’s Riyad Mahrez (8.4) should also be bolstered by the form of visitors Everton. The Algerian has accrued a goal and two assists in his last two starts and has earned bonus on three occasions.

Given that Ronald Koeman’s charges have yet to keep a clean sheet on the road, Foxes striker Jamie Vardy (8.6) should also get the opportunity to end a run of three successive blanks.

The poll is now live in the middle column on your homepage on desktop, or via the slide-in menu on mobile and tablet under Recent Comments.

Remember, we are looking for your vote for the player you think will be most effective, regardless of whether you own them or not.

We will be back to check in on progress in the poll later ahead of the Gameweek 10 deadline when we deliver our “Captain Sensible” article offering an analysis of the results and the statistics behind the leading contenders.

      1. Play Elliot this week for starters;
      2. Bavies to go for Ward
      3. Lukaku to Wood or Laca
      4. Upgrade Carroll to Sanchez (c) or Salah (c)
(given you have RLC, you could almost play him this week over Yedlin)

Might be a bit late to go double Soton. Go Bavies to Dunk instead.

I think with the plethora of midfield options available you can't setup for 4-3-3 each week and have to open up that 4th midfielder spot for either Rich or Choupo (I have both as 3rd and 4th). Then it's a case of working out whether you're playing 5 mids and 2 strikers or 4 and 3. You look like you're setup for 3 upfront so maybe Luka to Aguero or go low (Diouf?) and bring in big guns (Sanch/Salah) in midfield.

    (A) Haz + Jesus >> Salah + Aguero
    (B) Do one of the above and sort out Davies with the other transfer.

No idea who plays for City! Jesus > Kun could work! And Haz is looking dangerous but so expensive! And who would you go for to replace Davies? There’s no one I like the look of! Salah in sounds good though! So probably A

Thinking eventually I may just go back to Lukaku to stop the Aguero-Jesus merry-go-round.

Kun's price will rocket while Lukaku will drop and GW12 onwards looks good.

There is the obvious Zlatan caveat but this might stop the Pep heartbreak.

It's the 'taking captaincy off Kane' that is basically to be filed under 'chinny reckon/itchy beard'. Probably true, but impossible to prove.

Lots say they almost did this and that.

In the end that is simply a 'captained Jesus'

Well Jonty, so much for my triple loaded Man City strategy.

It might of worked against the Scouts in the Scout Picks GW8 Lottery, but GW9 has been an absolute shocker!

I already had Jesus going into GW9 and went all guns blazing bringing in Aguero and Sterling.

Sterling (0pts) in for Ramsey (12pts)
Aguero (7pts) in for Kane (16pts)
Chuck in my -4 point hit for the banter

      Leaves me with a 25 point deficit…

We can’t all be as smooth as you with your Sterling (C) and Kane (VC) moves...

I did the exact same moves, sterling and kun in for Kane/Ramsey.(c) kun...all for a -4.

          How about,
Eriksen Mbemba -> Sterling Jones for -4
That's on the back of getting Andy Carroll as the 3rd cheap striker on my WC last week for his red card.

Never one for catching prices or kneejerks. Wanted to force the issue a bit this time, hence did Eriksen to Sterling before his 0.2 rise and thought Mbemba -> Jones for a -4 is a free transfer at worst and points gain at best.

      ROUGH!!!

I’ve probably had the worst gameweek on the site. No Bailly or Davies for the second week running, Suttner on the bench didn’t play and would have been a jammy sub. For my transfer I did Alli>Sterling (c), with Jesus (vc). So only got 9 out with Brady subbing for Sterling.

      Smooth;

Gross, Kane. 2 FTs this week.

Fair play Jonty, but in all honesty the whole Captain, VC business for me does take some of the skill out of the game, saying that as someone who has benefited the same way before. I'd personally do away with captains and make subs get half points (rounded up) if I was head of FPL towers but that's for another debate.

Well done getting a 5 figure rank and make sure you cash in on this - maybe makes up for that run of 20 pointers last season...

Think it was 28 points since he got an assist as well.

And nothing was ever jammier than that snow week when no one played except Tim Cahill. That's why we got the VC system.

Rough... Jesus benched, Sterling benched, De Gea and Lukaku, Eriksen, Dawson. Pretty much my whole team.

Smooth... Gross and Kane although my main rivals had Kane captain.

Overall rank down to 216k and I've already taken a - 8 to do Lukaku, Dawson and Loftus-Cheek to Aguero, Richarlison and Dunk.

76 points and up to 136k OR. Got 2 FTs and thinking of downgrading a defender and upgrading a midfielder. Shifting from 5 to 4 at the back.

Davies Sterling Jesus Wimmer and RLC all benched - 1st time I've ever needed 3 off the bench...for 5pts

Hazard (c) was at least better than Jesus (c) which everyone in ML seemed to go with. Gutted not to have gone Kane for a big rise.

Azpi, Stones and Elliot did ok. Kane for 55 all out.

rough: did kane to lukaku as i had what i thought was the luxury of the wildcard. main reason in the end was needing a captain, was hesitant on jesus (starting doubt) and kane (wembley points doubt).
also had a 1 week punt on martial.

smooth: got rid of phil jones on friday as i felt an injury was imminent given he was already playing through the pain barrier, replaced with yoshida

Rough - Davies, Wimmer, Sterling and Jesus dropped. I had a full playing bench but they all got a point a piece. Captained Hazard over Kane.

Smooth: Kane (VC) as I thought he would score one, but Sterling would do better.

19 points before last game. Kane saved my day almost all by him self by getting me more points than the rest of the team all together. 🙂

Eriksen Vardy to Richarlison and Kun. Chelsea were dodgy in defence and Watford always find a way to score apart from against City so that worked out well.

The only rough was not captaining Kane given that Spurs doesn’t have a good record against Pool in past meetings and the Wembley curse has been broken at this unfortunate timing!

Rough - Could have been so much better, Ramsey (12) and Azpi (7) out for Sterling (0) and Jones (1) (-4) cost me 22 points. However thought had Surmans 9 points coming off the bench as didn't realise RLC had come on for 13mins for a whole 1 point instead.

Jesus, Vardy.. so 4.50pm Saturday - grim reading 25pts from 8 starters. prov rank dropping back to around 90k.

like a lot of people, Harry (VC) saved my week, but more importantly a guy who was second in one of my MLs had:

Baily, Davies, Sterling (C), Jesus (VC), baines (0), RLC and mikhi.

Scored a career low of 21 last week. My response was to play my wildcard for GW9. Out went Kane and Alli and Hazard, in came Jesus, Silva and Sterling.

Moratta also came in and did nothing. Held Lukaku for his "plum" Huddersfield fixture.

Bought two new keepers (Hart and Ryan), in for the injured Foster and Myhill, and played Hart - the wrong one!

      *long post alert*

I had silver lining to my gameweek.

Having wildcarded GW8 and moved out Sterling for Otamendi to join Silva and Jesus as my 3 MCI. It made sense, I told myself, given Aguero might ruin him down the track.

GW8 arrives and I get burnt. I sat through the frustration all week, didn't knee-jerk, and held tight to the this weekend. 'No need to take a hit or two just to move 3 City players around', I told myself. 'Captain Kane makes sense per RMT' I said.

Fastforward to GW9 and Lukaku, Jesus, Morata, Sterling, Eriksen fail. Holding tight after an initial bad post-WC weekend yielded me 95 points and an approx 500k jump up to top 40k.

      https://fantasy.premierleague.com/a/team/719/event/9

Try to avoid following the herd where you can. This week, my trade is likely to be Alli to Salah. I want Sanchez but can't make it work without 2 hits. Which won't work. If you can make it work, he's your skipper this weekend 🙂

Hugely-needed smooth this week. 72 points with Kane (c), Azpi and Salah the main contributors. Up to 440k from 810k after a run of four red arrows.

Rough: Transfer was Davies > Jones while I watched all my main rivals enjoy those Otamendi points. Also watching Richarlison miss those chances was rough...doubt he’ll be a differential for long either with that goal threat.

On balance, Ramsey has earned his stay late on Sunday - his head was on the chopping block for a Watford downgrade but might now switch out Brady instead. The only real highlight in a dreary week, with my Brighton pair of 6s (Gross and Ryan) my only other main contributors.

My first rough that's maybe rough enough to be worthy of making it onto the Scoutcast. Played my WC this week with 10 changes in total:

Azpi, Trip, Bertrand, Suttner, Salah, Ritchie, Choupo-Moting, Brady, Kane, Jesus out
Jones, Maguire, Daniels, Hunemeier, Sterling, Coutinho, Zaha, Richarlison, Aguero, Morata in

      - Everyone I took out bar Jesus and Brady returned. Everyone I got in bar Richarlison and Aguero blanked. Suttner > Hunemeier was a bench transfer anyway.
      - Old XI outscored my new XI by 34 points
      - Slipped from inside 500k to outside 1m
      - Crashed out of LMS just 2 short of safety score
      - But oddly just 2 further transfers and I'm happy with my team moving forward

Only a smooth for me, had Sterling(c), Jesus(vc) up until 6:28pm on Friday then switched vc to Kane on a whim which obviously paid dividends. But to top it all off i had Monreal first sub so another 7pts lucked in.

I don't ever get jammy points, so i'm going to enjoy the moment.

      Rough:

      Captained Lukaku over Kane

Lost faith in Alli - ditched him for Sterling

      Smooth:

54 points for the week. Just above average with a small rank rise despite having Davies, Cresswell, and Sterling with only 1 active sub (Brady) so playing with 9 players.

      Rough
Jesus captain (after going back and forth all Friday with Kane)
      Davies benched
      Sterling benched
      Jones off injured
      Jesus on for 10 mins
1 point from my 7m defender

      Smooth
Dropped from 6k to 21k, I guess if you can have a horrific car crash week and still be 21k it has to be seen as a small result.

Smooth - (C) Kane when most captained Jesus in mini league. Basis for Kane was thinking about the Dortmund game and how well he played when a team didn't park the bus and opened up against them and thought Liverpool only play one way. Thought even if Jesus started he would've struggled against a stubborn Burnley address.

Picking Sane last week has proved so far to be the best Man City mid for the past few weeks.

      Picked Elliot over Foster

Rough - Fernandez (OG) leaving him with -1

Rough: All week I planned to just do a free transfer Bavies to Daniels. On Friday at around 6.30pm I suddenly decided to couple that with a second transfer for a hit, removing Kane for Morata and captained him. Lead to a 19 point swing (was previously captaining Jesus so that at least had no impact).

Was hoping for Kane blank and good Morata performance to push me up my mini leagues, but have instead took a massive drop.

Smooth: Now out of LMS so I can concentrate on the league.

Lots of smooths with a 68 point GW and a banked transfer. Defense really stepped up with everybody contributing either with a clean sheet or a goal. OR now at 65k mark and green arrows in most of my MLs. Pretty happy to take the assist points for Hazard (C) though his fantasy output looks to be a concern at this point. My only real transfer option was to drop Kane for Lukaku (C) for lack of alternative captains and bottled it last minute as it's a scary though to be without Kane.

Rough: Jesus and/or RLC coming on cost me a few points as Richarlison was sitting pretty with his 5 points as my first sub. Can't believe what I was thinking picking RLC over Richarlison in the first place. Coutinho is doing his thing of blanking whenever I select him but in the end I'm sure he will come good.

No smooth just rough: Taking out Kante(injured), Mooy (done nothing since gw2 and sub last 2) and Kane for
Sterling, RLC and Morata for -8 point hit. Giving players in 2 points, and players out 23 points plus the minus 8 means a loss of 29 points, also having Bavies, Jesus and Jones, red arrow down 800k places.

Rough: Ramsey decided to get a double digit haul in stoppage time to make my Sterling move look stupid. My defenders completed less than 90 minutes played in total, and only brought in 2 points. Davies, Suttner and Jones are all questionable for the next few games. Alonso could lose out on valuable minutes if Conte decides to use a different system.

Smooth: Kane (C) and KdB show yet again why they are priced highly. Ayew delivers another assist. 7th green arrow of the season.

Rough as a bag of badgers:

Brought Sterling in for Ramsey for a hit.
Eriksen, Jesus, Vardy, Carroll, Sterling fails (only Gross & Kaku did anything of note).

I'm not going to be able to touch some of the Sterling captainers here who had Kane VC (Jonty) but I have to mention Shane Duffman Duffy again because last week he stayed on long enough to get a CS for me before coming off before Brighton scored and this week, because Bavies didn't play he came off the bench for me for 7 points! I've only had him 2 weeks on a WC and I think I have to keep him for good because he seems to be a lucky charm! Luck of the Irish!

Worst was Clark being dropped when Newcastle kept a cleanie. Had Ward off the bench for another 1 pt.

Following my shocking 24 pts the previous game week, I got mad and decided I won't sign into the fpl website till after this gameweek, leaving my gw8 team unchanged for gw9.

Buckled on Thursday and made 3 transfers for -4. Sold lacazette 6 for morata 1, Ritchie 6 for Sterling 0, and kolasinac 1 for Fernandez -1. Switched capt from Kane to morata.
Ended up with 58 points after the -4 deduction. My gw8 team would have had 82 pts.

      Rough:

      Sigh...

My season had been going OK, ranked around 500k. Still, I had no Utd defender, just 1 city attacker and no Chelsea players. I had triple Spurs and with their upcoming fixtures, I saw fit to use my wildcard.

I drafted in double United defense (DDG + Jones), Alonso and Scott Dann. Shifting to a 3-5-2 formation due to the lack of decent third strikers I went for Sterling (C) - Silva - Coutinho - Richarlison - Chopo. Remembering how poor Kane was the last time he came from an exhausting CL midweek match and considering his fixtures, I also took my chance on Morata instead of him (who also looked tired, but had better fixtures). I kept Jesus.

The immediate result was 25 points and a fall in rank from 500 k to 1,3 mill.

The smooth was that Morata (VC) was subbed after 60 minutes, and not after 59.

My pre-wildcard actually would have scored 2 more points than my current team - but I am much happier going forward and made quite a lot of £££ so not calling this a rough.

A rough has to be me switching Dunk for Fernandez literally 1 minute before the deadline. I could only laugh when Fernandez scored that own goal... I spent a week looking at stats, decided Dunk was the best sub 4.5 option and then at the last minute changed to a player with 0 goal threat, playing for a inconsistent Swans team... I only have myself to blame!

Smooth: Had Sterling (C) and Kane (VC). Had suttner as bench 1 but since he didn't play, Mooy came on. Had Sterling come on for 1 minute would have cost me 21 points. Ended up on a very jammy 68.

      Rough.

Got impatient with Kane, Ramsey, Salah, Firmino and Ritchie so played wildcard.

Lost out on 18 points and lost money on getting rid of Kane.

      After wildcard:

      Elliot (7)
      Cedric (6), Jones (1), Fernandez (-1), Ward (1)
      Richarlison (5), Hazard (5), D.Silva (3), Zaha (3)
      Aguero (7) Lukaku (10 Captain)

      Bench: Pope (3), Cresswell (0), Sterling (0), Quaner (0)

      Total Points First 11 = 47

      Before wildcard:

      Elliot (7)
      Jones (1), Naughton (1), Ward (1)
      Ramsey (12), Salah (7), Ritchie (6), Carroll (2)
      Kane (16) Lukaku (10 Captain), Firmino (2)

      Bench: Foster (3), Davies (0), Sterling (0), Mee (1)

      Total Points First 11 = 65

Conclusion: Patience pays off. But hope to pick up points over the next 4 gameweeks. Won't take a hit to bring in Kane until Spurs play Crystal Palace.

Once again we are on the look out for a champion to represent the community to take on the Scout Picks and win the chance of a prize.

If you want to take part please email your FFS name and FPL ID number to community@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk .

The champion will then be selected at random shortly after the deadline of 8:30am Wednesday and then be asked to submit their XI by Friday 12 noon by emailing me at jonty@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk

We only need 11 picks and please be mindful of the 84m budget. There’s no captain in the picks either and please stick to a designated FPL formation, including no more than three players from one team. No captain or chips will be applied.

At the end of the season the champion who beats the picks by the highest margin will win a £100 Amazon voucher.

The champion will be revealed in a midweek Scout Squad article, which will outline our initial thinking around the picks. Our and the champions picks will be revealed as usual in the Scout Picks article.

Should the community “Champion” fail to provide an initial or final Scout Pick selection, then an “Assistant Manager” chosen by us, will gain control of the selection to represent the community for the Gameweek in question.

    Can wildcard from

    Forster Elliot
    Kola Bavies Mee Jones Maguire

    Lukaku Morata Abraham

    to

    Fab Elliot
    Otamendi Jones Ward Kiko Maguire
    KDB Sterling Salah Richarlison TC
    Kane Morata Abraham

Worth it? Or should i just do Lukaku + Bavies -> Kane + Kiko (-4)

Have a feeling United will tighten up next week. Don't see a need to take a hit this week.

might not effect you depending on when you bought him..... check that before panic selling, I want otamendi though so may be forced to do it tonight...

Got at 5.6 so if he drops again can only sell for 5.6

Short for Otamendi but if Stones rises too I'll be gutted

Might just wait till after City game - if one of my Spurs boys (Erik and Kane) get injured on Weds then I'll have to suck it up, but don't think they'll play tbh

I'm not either. Holding him though, don't expect a United goal.

Aye fair enough. Sick of the rotation though - brought him in before Swansea and he's only played 2 since then! Don't see City conceding to WBA either so not concerned with losing him for Stones 🙂

I'm not sold on Jesus to Aguero to be honest - I'm not sure that we won't see Pep troll and leave Kun on the bench. Tbh when Morata looks back and firing properly I'll be getting rid of Jesus for Morata

    Azpilicueta Otamendi Monreal Ward Yedlin
    Eriksen D.Silva Richarlison Stanislas T.Carroll
    Kane Aguero Abraham

2 Free Transfers 0 ITB - what would you do with this squad?
    Fab - Eliott
Bavies - Maguire - Luiz (Wimmer - Dunk)
Hazard - Silva - RLC - Richarlison (TC)
    Jesus - Vardy - Kane

Just do the simple Bavies out move for someone else? Or go for a liverpool mid? Any ideas?

Diouf looks best right now. I'm an unhappy Vardy owner currently considering the 3rd striker spot.

Can’t wait to get him back in GW12 honestly.

Around the same time people were getting rid of Ibra last when he had the stats and not the points. 10 goals in 11 games is what followed after that.

Lukaku has a better conversion rate than Ibra if you compare with last year and United as team is better also now.

People are forgetting that Pogba is very close to returning.

I may do something similar (if Jesus seems likely to play). Alonso just annoying me.
