Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Carabao Cup – Tuesday

Pep Guardiola stuns us all by starting both of his strikers against Wolves. Phil Jones is fit enough for the Man United bench ahead of a massive weekend clash with Spurs and Bournemouth might just have found a new old solution up front.

Elsewhere, Riyad Mahrez continues to find form as Leicester City win again, Arsenal turn to the kids and Crystal Palace are at their woeful worst.

Here are the notes from a night of Carabao Cup action full of talking points…

Guardiola’s striking selections

It all seemed so simple – whoever Pep Guardiola used as his starting striker against Wolves was likely to be benched for Saturday’s trip to West Brom.

Maybe he wouldn’t even pick a striker. Maybe he’d play a false nine. Or a youth teamer.

What none of us saw was Pep playing both of his regular frontmen. So that’s exactly what he did.

Sergio Aguero – he of the 245,000+ new managers this Gameweek – and Gabriel Jesus (who’s lost nearly 175,000 of them) both started. Against Wolves. In the Carabao Cup.

And after 120 minutes of exciting but goalless fare, the Argentinian was still on the pitch and scoring the winning penalty in a shoot-out.

Throw in the fact that the 14.8%-owned Raheem Sterling was another to start and finish City’s midweek marathon and the ramifications for any number of Fantasy managers could be huge.

Aguero, now owned by 14.1%, has played 195 minutes in four days. It now seems unlikely that he will be starting all of Man City’s next three fixtures – the Baggies match, a trip to Napoli in the Champions League and then a visit from Arsenal – over the week and a half to come before the final international break of the year.

As for the 21.4%-owned Jesus, the fact he ‘only’ played 82 minutes last night to follow up a 14-minute cameo in the 3-0 win over Burnley would suggest he’s in pole position to lead the line this weekend at The Hawthorns.

And owners of Sterling will now be hoping that his zero minutes against the Clarets stands him in good stead for The Hawthorns.

But this is Guardiola we’re talking about.

So the only thing we know for sure is that the Fantasy managers who’ve made the Argentinian the most popular transfer target and the Brazilian the most sold player heading into Gameweek 10, may now be ruing their early moves in the market.

A number of City’s other well-owned assets also featured on the night.

Kevin De Bruyne (19.6%) replaced Jesus, Leroy Sane (12.9%) and Kyle Walker (14.6%) came on in extra time and John Stones (9.6%) was introduced after 90 minutes.

Ilkay Gundogan, meanwhile, played the full tie, but Guardiola revealed post-match that the midfielder had ‘finished with some problems’ and would be assessed today.

However, the German seemed to allay any concerns post-match by suggesting via social media that he is “well”.

All rather clearer for United

If City’s match was all about who played, Man United’s 2-0 win at Swansea City was rather more notable for the one that didn’t.

The presence of Phil Jones on the bench for Jose Mourinho’s men was great news for his 10.6% ownership after the centre-back limped off in the first half of United’s weekend loss at Huddersfield.

Jones was an unused substitute at the Liberty Stadium, but Mourinho was optimistic on the availability of his defender post-match.

“There were no injuries either, so it is a good day. I believe that Phil Jones will be fit for Saturday against Tottenham, but apart from that I have no news.”

Jesse Lingard followed up his first league start of the season at the weekend with a star turn last night, scoring both of the goals for United. Assists came from Marcus Rashford and Matteo Darmian.

Regular starters Romelu Lukaku and Nemanja Matic were handed 23-minute run-outs from the bench.

As for Swansea, their defensive resources were stretched that much thinner when the side’s only specialist left-back, Martin Olsson, had to leave the field with a hamstring injury.

Post-match, Paul Clement conceded he’s uncertain on the extent of the Swede’s injury, with Kyle Naughton or Sam Clucas set to deputise should he miss out.

A move to the left flank for Naughton could see Angel Rangel – at just 3.9 in FPL – take up the right-back role. The veteran was named captain last night and played the full 90 minutes. He could be tasked with silencing a rejuvenated Alexis Sanchez on Saturday.

Up front, though, Tammy Abraham was limited to just 18 minutes off the bench ahead of a weekend trip to Arsenal.

Wilson makes timely return

Bournemouth’s 3-1 win over Middlesbrough came courtesy of a goal and an assist from returning striker Callum Wilson.

The forward had been out since January with a knee injury, and his performance will have heartened boss Eddie Howe.

The Cherries have struggled for goals this season – they’ve managed just six in nine league outings – and both Jermain Defoe (hamstring) and Josh King (illness) sat out last night’s match.

A visit from Chelsea awaits Howe’s men this Saturday, but after that their schedule improves hugely – new HUD swa BUR SOT cry.

Wilson, at 5.9, could be the answer to both Bournemouth’s frontline and our own budget third striker issues – if he can build on his excellent return, that is.

Debutant Jack Simpson and Benik Afobe, who has failed to find the net in seven league appearances this season, were also on the scoresheet, with assists coming from Simpson and Ryan Fraser.

Mahrez in fine form

More than a quarter of a million managers attempted to tap into Leicester City’s recent improved schedule by buying Jamie Vardy (14.4%).

But it has been Riyad Mahrez who has been the class act.

While Vardy has endured three successive league blanks, the Algerian has produced a goal and two assists from his last two matches and followed that up with another strike in the Foxes’ 3-1 win over Leeds last night.

The midfielder only came on after 65 minutes, while Vardy managed a mere nine, leaving others to do much of the work in a second straight win for caretaker boss Michael Appleton.

Kelechi Iheanacho opened the scoring and then set up the second for Islam Slimani, before Mahrez sealed the deal with a trademark individual effort.

Reports suggest ex-Southampton manager Claude Puel will be in the Leicester hot seat sooner rather than later, so Iheanacho’s performance looked particularly timely if a new broom sweeps through the first team.

But neither of the side’s star turns are likely to be dropped by whoever is in charge, and the club’s fine fixtures – only visits from Man City and Spurs look truly tough through to Gameweek 18 – and Mahrez’s form mark him out as a 3.8%-owned differential in the making.

Elsewhere…

Crystal Palace’s shock 2-1 win over Chelsea in Gameweek 8 is already starting to feel like ancient history as Roy Hodgson’s men were beaten 4-1 at Bristol City.

Admittedly, the Eagles’ boss made 10 changes from the team that faced Newcastle last weekend, with Ruben Loftus-Cheek – their most-owned player at 5.5% – staking a claim for a first-tem berth by supplying the assist for Bakary Sako’s opener.

Bristol equalised almost immediately and then ran away with the tie, leaving Palace to concentrate on a league schedule that looks very inviting, but must be offset by the side’s woeful lack of form and confidence.

Arsene Wenger sent out a standard Arsenal Carabao Cup side of bit-part players and youth teamers against Norwich City and came horribly close to coming unstuck as a result.

The Frenchman made 11 changes to the team who beat Everton 5-2 on Sunday, but had to rely on teenage substitute Eddie Nketiah to spare his blushes with a late equaliser and an extra-time winner in the 2-1 victory.

Assists came from Francis Coquelin and Mohamed Elneny.

Should I keep money in bank for Jesus to Kun in future?
I am tempted to not and do Davies-->Oatamendi instead of Davies-->Mee/Ward
    Thoughts?

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    Is Richarlison the real deal?

On last night’s Scoutcast and elsewhere in comments here the love affair with Richarlison has reached fever pitch.

He’s cheap, he has good fixtures and passes the eye test.

But with few shots on target is he the real deal?

And what of his poor underlying stats at home? Are these merely a result of playing tougher teams? Or are his skills being better utlised away from home, when Watford enjoys less possession and is more reliant on counter attacks?

Can he be the next King/Mahrez or Alli or are people getting carried away in the hope he will?

He wont be the next anything imo. Just a 6.3m option who takes a lot of goal attempts/shots in the box as M.Silva's tactics mean he plays as an inside forward ala Salah

He can be a very good option for the next 4 atleast and hopefully if he keeps up the consistency he can be a season keeper.

almost swallowed my tongue when Az claimed he might captain him because there were no other decent options. Harry Kane? Hasn't he noticed that United's great home form has come against West Ham, Leicester, Everton and Palace.

      Honestly, Kane or Richarlison? Haaaaa

Decent player though and I brought him in last week

Tempted to get him, should've got him in on the wildcard last week. Choupo-Moting or Sterling would make way for him, but may wait a week.

He is lovely price for a player that attacking in a good team.

Members can check this stat for themselves, but Richarlison beats Mahrez 2015/16 and King second half 2016/17 for goal threat. Loses out in terms of distribution though.

He fits the Nani mould for me, if he works hard and makes the right decisions he can be very very good like Nani was for a season or two, or he could become a Nani for most other seasons of his career. Talent is there and fpl wise he plays under a great manager and is cheap

I just feel Gross is less erratic and largely ignored with just 2 points less than him in total! On almost all set pieces and his chance creation record has been consistent for years now.
Wrt Richcarlison his shots on target is quite poor...He is like a Redmond with trying to shoot given the chance without thinking sensibly.
Think those who have luxury of having both have got a good deal

Think I am gonna roll with both for the next month or so. Really want to own Rich for this period, but Gross has done absolutely nothing to warrant leaving my team so going to sacrifice Sterling for now.

He's definetly worth owning. The fact he's getting and missing these opportunities means that things can and surely will improve.

If he bangs in a couple and gets his confidence up then he may start hitting the target more. Happy owner at the moment considering the other options in this price bracket.

And Watford are exciting to watch this season so I like owning players who are easy on the eye

Excellent HT. I'm keen to find out. My concern is more that we are desperate to see him be something, so much that we forget that he is a Watford mid and they tend to dip after a solid start.

Brought this guy in to replace Pogba in GW5 when he hadn't done that much. It was the eye test and instinct if anything but I remember the impact he made vs Liverpool, saw Watford's fixtures, knew Silva would work miracles there and thought it was a good punt.

I would be worried if he wasn't getting chances. So like Salah, I pop him in, know he will bring in consistent points but unfortunately will miss a hat-full of chances. Nobody better at that value. He won't be a King/Mahrez though so don't get that excited.

Quite a few of his goals have been lucky too but you have to think he is going to improve so much. Only worry is around Winter and if he can hack it.

That's true - some South Americans have struggled in the past when the temperature drops and the matches start coming thick and fast. I think it's absolutely fair to bring him in now, though, and wait and see if his performances stay at the same level.

He's a very good option, cheap and Watford are in fine form, now with good fixtures. I think it's a no-brainer. I've had him since GW6 when I used my WC and he got attacking points every gameweek. I was lucky last weekend when he came on for Cresswell.

There are some interesting mid-price options in midfield although I feel they won't be consistent like Silva, Salah, Eriksen, etc.

I think he's the real deal, and am looking to get him in for the long-term in this week. Not concerned by the home/away differences - he's proved himself to be too good to bench, with assists in back to back games against the top six (ARS/che), and I certainly wouldn't put him in the captaincy conversation.

That means start him every week, home or away - if he does better in away games, then fine, but I do think the fixtures so far have something to do with it.

His shot accuracy isn't great, and I think he may prove to be a wasteful finisher. But anyone who watches him can see his quality on the ball, and his xG, xA, average position, shots and touches in the box tell the same story - he constantly gets into the penalty area, and causes problems.

He'll win penalties this season, he'll continue to score some headers, and he won't miss every tap-in like he did at Chelsea. Walcott, Sterling and Salah have all been similar FPL players - classed as a midfielder, poor at finishing, poor in the BPS, but they get into such dangerous areas that they can't help but get points.

Watford are a great team going forwards, and a large part of that is that, in Silva, they have a manager who wants to take the game to the opposition, and try to win every game. Richarlison has been their outstanding player, and I expect that to continue.

          Well said.

Got him in on wildcard in GW8 because I thought he’d give a few teams headaches on the counter. Watford aren’t particularly fantastic at the possession game but in Deeney they have someone who can hold up a back line and let the likes of Richo et al bomb into the middle.

Wouldn’t go so far as to captain...interesting to see if AZ goes through with that!

Can he be the next King/Mahrez/Alli?

        Yes.

        Would I captain him?

Much like Alli, Mahrez and King in their initial fortuitous periods, no. But most definitely a fire and forget at £6.3m for the time being.

Aced the eye test at Chelsea. 20 year olds will miss chances. I'll take the punt at that price.

Lots to like about him and much of it already said. But...

He's 20 years old, in a new country with a new language and winter is coming. He won't be used to playing in mud and sleet. I don't think it should surprise anyone if his form dips at some point and Silva already made it pretty clear that he will take him out of the firing line when he thinks it's necessary.

I would therefore at least temper the enthusiasm. He's not a bad pick and I am considering him myself but he's probably not a player to get as carried away about as some appear to be.

Absolutely not. Watford are way ahead of Palace this year. And their fixtures have been diabolical as well. Now that the fixtures clear up, we should see a better Watford on both ends of the pitch. Palace just got hammered against a Championship team for God's sake.

He is no Mahrez or Alli because he plays for a team that will be in the top 10 as a best case. Leceister won the league and Alli plays for a strong Spurs. He could be the next King though. Bournemouth last year were similar to Watford this year. Probably Watford has the same ambition.

I think he will deliver at home when he has better fixtures. No better fixture at home than Stoke at the moment.

He is my favourite player of the year already.

My highlight of the FPL season so far was loudly celebrating in a pub when I saw he'd scored a 95th minute goal, which began a long FPL-related conversation with the table next to me.

I won't worry about a winter drop off until I see it - he's already more physical than most South Americans.

But with all of that said, as a longish term owner who's kept a close eye on him, I am surprised he's such a bandwagon given that he clearly can't finish.

I’ve put him in alongside Gross, Eriksen and Salah. Richie was the makeway. Looks like a fantastic player. I said same about Jese when I first saw him, but his form has nosedived. Richarlison seems to be much more consistent. Perhaps he can fill the mid price bargain hole we’ve had all season.

I'm considering booting Sterling for him. Hesitant as these types of bandwagons usually seem to end in disappointment. Mahrez, Kane from years gone by are exceptions. Only recently Kolasinac was "essential". Now people can't wait to get rid. Just one example.

I'm fully committed to the cause but realise I am getting very carried away with a 20yr old played from Watford.

I think he'll be the highest scoring player on my team this week so why wouldn't I captain him though?

Salah is the obvious option and I love him too... but got to put my money where my mouth is!

Bavies will likely be dropped for the Palace clash considering he was dropped for Swansea and Bournemouth..Davies needs to go because 5.x mil for a defender who won't play the 6pt games is a waste of funds. Eriksen is a completely different scenario

Going for Salah. Not really sure why. Think it's a case of Alli and Eriksen last season, they both look like they'll score similar points.

I feel like Salah's shooting can only improve so I'm opting for him because of this

Is there uncertainty throughout the spurs defence other than Vertonghen and Alderweireld?
Now we can't trust Davies any more can we trust Trippier?

Why is Duffy all of a sudden very fashionable around these parts?

I get that but what I didn't get is why they were going for Duffy as the replacement

Slightly annoyed at myself for going early with my transfers this week.

Players I’m not overly happy to own:
          Sterling
          Ritchie
          Aguero
          Mbemba
          Kolasinac
          Vardy

Players I’d like to bring in:
          Silva
          Richarlison
          Morata/Jesus
          Moreno
          Kiko
          Lukaku (for GW12)

Anything worth a hit this week?

          Hart
          Ward, Jones, Kolasinac
          Sterling, Salah (c), Ritchie, Gross
          Aguero, Kane, Vardy

          (Elliot, RLC, Naughton, Mbemba)

          Thoughts on Bellerin (c) ?

Arsenal’s home record is fantastic, great chance of a CS, and he’s almost been playing as a winger in recent weeks.

Own but have doubts over Aguero (minutes), Kane (united defence) and Salah (parked bus).

I would rather gamble on Salah

No way. Arsenal still conceding goals and prone to giving chances to opposing teams

            Go with Kane

Would you rather Alonso to Jones OR Alonso to Ward which leaves enough funds for RLC/Carroll to Richarlison?
