The Knee Jerk – Gameweek 10

And now it seems that Leroy Sane is Pep’s new favourite. Surely we can’t go on like this, bending to Guardiola’s whims and moving from player to player as he switches his affections?

And yet, as this is typed, Fantasy managers are doing just that, making way for Leroy Sane’s arrival in their squad by selling David Silva and even Raheem Sterling. Just as last week we saw thousands eject Gabriel Jesus to welcome back Sergio Aguero.

As it turned out, that move went unpunished. The Brazilian could not deliver at The Hawthorns on starting ahead of Aguero, failing to even record a single shot on goal in a match that City dominated and registered 15 attempts.

That’s an alarming statistic and one that hardly offers encouragement for his security of start. Jesus’ owners will already be concerned that today’s decision to rest Aguero is further indication that Guardiola’s two main strikers are job sharing.

The midweek teamsheet in Napoli will provide new clues as to the intention for Gameweek 11, when Arsenal visit the Etihad Stadium. Depending on the teamsheet in Italy, Aguero could get the start against the Gunners, as he bids to finally break the club goal scoring record on home turf. That could see Jesus back on the bench. Maybe.

Pep’s rotation across his “five forwards” is clearly in full swing. There’s almost a system; almost a tantalising pattern forming.

Today Bernardo Silva started, while Raheem Sterling was omitted for a second successive Gameweek. However, this time it was Sterling who was the one of the five chosen for the now standard 30-minute cameo. He capitalised on that opportunity. Sterling’s goal – a seventh of the season – issued a reminder that he can work for us, even when handed limited pitch time.

But just three weeks ago, the idea of back-to-back bench roles for Sterling seemed improbable. He had started five successive league matches when available, with Pep smiling on the winger as his favoured “support striker” option.

Now Guardiola’s gaze appears to have shifted to Sane. The German has now started five successive league matches and seven of last eight in all competitions. In those five Gameweeks, he has supplied four goals and five assists and now sits on top of the overall FPL standings.

The case for Sane is strong, but is he really immune to his manager’s selection policy?

These continued attempts to break the code and work out Pep’s next shuffle is tiresome, but perhaps not as futile as the current market trend of moving from one City asset to the next.

Surely we have to commit, accept some frustration and hope we get value from our weapon of choice.

It’s highly debatable if that can be either Aguero or Jesus at this present time. However, one of Sterling or Sane, with Silva the less explosive but more dependable choice, looks the way to go.

Playing for higher stakes could pay off, but Guardiola’s game of roulette appears to be a major distraction for our transfer policy at a time when options like Eden Hazard are edging back into contention.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Jesus then Aguero. Looks like an either or right now so that is a heap of money at risk each week. Circa 10% of your team budget unsure of getting minutes is a big risk to carry.

When a city player gets a run of starts (even if they are benched midweek like Sane was which explains his PL starts) why does Mark say that player is now Pep's 'favourite'? I think this clouds people's judgment a bit and for me someone who's just had a load of minutes is more likely to be on the chopping block than go on getting starts. Same thing happened with Sterling. He started quite a few league games and Mark said that means he must be designated for league starts which seemed like quite a loose assumption and low a behold he then gets a few rests. I think we need to start thinking a bit more ahead of the curve if we're gonna nail down this rotation thing. For a start it's tricky to predict league starts vs prem starts but out of the two I'd be buying Sterling right now

If I get him, the moves you've mentioned are impossible due to insufficient funds. 😀

Just curious, who do you think are the midfield picks going forward then?

Personally I see salah and richarlison as mainstays right now, but besides that nobody is screaming at me to own.

Hazard needs to do more for me at this point.

        Sanchez is nearly 12m

Eriksen has come off the boil a bit recently

Silva isn't a bad pick, just not as explosive as I'd like

        Sterling/sane aren't nailed

I don't know, I guess I just find myself being able to justify Kane, Lukaku, morata much easier as they don't really throw up so many question marks to me

Eriksen is the midfielder I like the most. But as I wrote, will have to sell him to bring Kaku back.

Hope Richarlison to deliver... Got him this week, but that blank stunned me a lot.

Salah, Richarlison, sane, hazard, sterling even off the bench can do damage, Coutinho, Alli and Eriksen, both should be great given fixtures

Understandable, there's no right or wrong I just think with so many great options and Abraham, who's doing very well atm (even bagged off the Bench vs Watford) it points towards 2 premiums and Abraham with 3 of these midfield options and Richarlison

Morata, Kane and Lukaku are untouchable in their respective teams.

Tammy may blank a couple of games and there will be huge pressure for Bony to start

... no right, no wrong ...

Although I don't want to ditch Eriksen, it's the easiest way to get Kaku back.

Monreal, Eriksen, Abraham > Moreno, RLC, Kaku

These are the moves which I'm considering...

It is difficult to get back 3 up if you have spread the money when you have sold one ... i think you either commit to 3 up top or not, difficult to change formations otherwise

    Bottomed:

    Elliot
    Bertrand Otamendi Trippier Yoshida
    Salah Sterling Choupo-Moting
    Vardy Kane Lukaku

    Foster Brady Carroll Gamez

    1 FT, 1.1 ITB

I played my FH chip this week and it didn't pay off, now im left with my previous team which I feel needs a bit of surgery... any suggestions??

    Time for the wildcard??

Is it me or has Sane got quite low ownership on here considering he's the top scoring FPL player for less than 9m?

Pep eased him in slowly at the beginning of the season, so we all thought he wasn’t nailed on so he got out of radar a little.

Ever since Mendy got injured Pep used him a lot more and boy he delivered. He’s absolutely smashing it FPL wise.

Still don’t know hiw to get him in. 🙂 🙂

Basically because they kept telling us "he'll be the one to drop out" (out of Sterling, Jesus, Aguero, Sane in a front 3) not realising Pep didn't actually have a system he's just merrigorounding his players. Sane is actually a good pick. Certainly a lot better than Silva

I still feel Sterling has the edge - tied with Sane ppm and is 0.5 cheaper.

If Pep doesn't have a system as you say and therefore we're assessing all his players on a level, then Sterling still looks a better option.

Owning both is the other route, of course. I certainly prefer those two to owning one of the strikers.

But doesn't "PPM" ignore the fact that Sane seems to be having more "M"? With Mendy out long term Sane seems almost immune to rotation.

Since Sane came into the starting line up he's missed only 7 minutes of PL football.

Sure, but two GW's ago we were acknowledging Sterling starting five successive Gameweeks when available.

I'd like to think that Sane is at the same status as Silva and KDB in terms of league rotation, but I don't quite buy it just yet.

Perhaps Mendy's absence is a factor, with Pep feeling that Sane gives him protection when Delph gets forward.

It's tricky for sure. Truth is, Silva, Sterling and Sane are all good options at the price.

Breaking many perceived rules, i have Silva, Sane and Sterling right now. It seemed an interesting punt, a hedge against rotation during a phase of form + fixtures for Mcfc, and not a bad way of keeping team value moving in the right direction.
Plan was to rethink in 3-4 weeks when fixtures change and candidates emerge elsewhere.

Sure Sane was brought in slowly start of season but is as nailed as can be under Pep.He also certainly has "the edge" over Sterling if you watch the games.Id go as far to say Sane is Citys most important player right now.

owning Sterling and Sane has the benefit of most likely atleast one will play.

owning one striker and one MF you risk both will be rested. puts less stress on the bench.

    Fab / Elliot

    Stones / Alonso / Kiko / Ward / Cedric

Hazard / Sterling / Richarlison (King / Carrick)

    Kane / Vardy / Jesus

What to do with this lot? 1 FT and 0.6 ITB.
Alonso, Cedric (after next week), Vardy, Jesus are all on my list of shipping out.

Who's the priority? To be honest I'm tempted to wait until next weekend and save my FT and potentially take a - 4 for 3 transfers. Not sure how much 1 transfer would help me now.

Jesus has looked pretty sluggish the last two so maybe Kun vs Napoli and then reverting back to 352 with both playing vs Arsenal?
