Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Europa League – Thursday

Arsenal labour to a draw that sees them into the Europa League knockout stages with two matches to spare, but Everton crash out after a fifth straight defeat in all competitions.

Here are the notes from Thursday’s European action.

Same old result from much-changed Everton

Everton started with three defensive midfielders and no recognised striker in Lyon as they departed this season’s Europa League with two group matches still to play.

Of the team’s five most popular players in Fantasy Premier League, only goalkeeper Jordan Pickford (6.8%) even travelled to France as caretaker manager David Unsworth elected to field a makeshift back four and Gylfi Sigurdsson as a ‘false nine’.

The resultant 3-0 defeat was actually a touch harsh on his troops, who were enjoying a measure of control over the tie before conceding an unlucky opener in the 68th minute.

What little confidence they had accrued then drained from the side and they finished the match well beaten and adrift at the bottom of the Group E table, with just one point from four fixtures.

Wayne Rooney (10.1%), Leighton Baines (5.2%) and Phil Jagielka (3.3%) were given the night off, while Michael Keane (6.4%) also didn’t travel as he continues to recover from an infection following a foot injury.

Jonjoe Kenny (4.3) started his fourth match in all competitions at right-back, but his budget allure remains negligible in a side that hasn’t kept a league clean sheet since Gameweek 1.

On the other flank, Cuco Martina endured a torrid evening. He was booked early and then left the field on a stretcher after falling awkwardly on his back.

The ex-Southampton man was at least well enough to be released from hospital to travel back with the squad, however.

Morgan Schneiderlin was dismissed for two yellow cards late on, while Sigurdsson’s Everton nightmare continued as he struggled to make his mark as the side’s nominal striker.

And even when Dominic Calvert-Lewin (5.0) – seen by some as a budget third forward option – came on to allow the Icelander to drop into a more familiar No 10 role, the former Swansea City star had minimal impact on a match that quickly got away from the Toffees once their goal had been breached for the first time.

Unsworth spoke post-match of Sunday’s visit from Watford being a huge match for his chances of taking the Everton role on a permanent basis, and he would have been encouraged by the resolve shown by his players last night.

But the squad remains toothless up front and vulnerable at the back – a toxic combination that discourages Fantasy investment regardless of the club’s schedule.

All last night’s result did was arguably boost our confidence in Watford’s main attackers ahead of that Goodison clash, with Richarlison owners confident of a haul on Sunday.

Everton still have two Europa League dead rubbers to play, sandwiched between trips to Crystal Palace and Southampton later this month and a visit from Huddersfield and a Merseyside derby at Anfield in early December.

Arsenal through despite stalemate

Arsene Wenger’s policy of using the Europa League to field fringe players and blood youngsters continued in a 0-0 draw at home to Red Star Belgrade that took the Gunners through to next year’s knockout stages after just four matches.

The tie had little Fantasy relevance, with perhaps only Olivier Giroud, Jack Wilshere and Theo Walcott likely to see much Premier League action in the foreseeable future.

Giroud was the Gunners’ chief goal threat, firing four attempts, with two on target, but failed to find the net and is set to remain behind Alexandre Lacazette in the pecking order up front.

The visitors were lively throughout and spurned two excellent chances to score, while Wilshere had Arsenal’s best opportunity, only to see his goal-bound effort athletically cleared.

The Gunners will win Group H if they can pick up three points from their last two fixtures.

The first attempt will come between the north London derby and a trip to Burnley in mid-November, while the final group match is sandwiched by league commitments at home to Man United and away at Southampton early next month.

Based on Wenger’s selection policy to date, neither tie will throw up many rotation issues for Fantasy managers with key Arsenal assets in their squads.

Who fancies a real life Fantasy Football Scout football match or (depending on numbers) tournament for charity on behalf of Simon Humber (Absinthe)?

Back in the day when the 606 message boards were active, I played in a fans’ friendly for Nottingham Forest posters against (I think) Sheffield United posters. There was a real mix of ability on show but it was a great day, particularly as Forest won 10-1 or something.

The Scouts said that they were happy for me to gauge interest from you good folk with a view to me organising something similar for the FFS community. The precise details would evolve depending on interest, but I’d envisage most people signing up individually or with a few mates and then I’ll balance the ability of the sides a bit nearer the time (but keeping you on the same team as your mates).

I’d probably be looking to host it one Saturday on one of the 3g pitches in Bedfordshire (UK) which I've used for charity events before. I will also consider staging in London.

Wherever it takes place I'll make sure it is close enough to a pub for post-match frivolities, and I appreciate that players’ availability will be dependent on the final details.

That said, if it is something you might be interested in getting involved with (hopefully as a player, but possibly as a spectator) please either post your email address below or send it to community@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk with a note for it to be passed on to me.

As mentioned, I’m sure there would be a mixture of abilities and fitness and it is very much intended to be a fun fund-raiser! The more players the merrier, but please do let me know if you are likely to bring mates along so that I have an idea of numbers. If there’s enough of a response, I’ll firm up the details with anyone who showed initial interest. Thanks!

I run a (half-decent) Veterans team and the only thing different to us compared to an Adult team is that our injury list currently has more than half the team's names on it - cracked ribs, dislocated shoulders, hamstring injuries for those players who are actually fairly nippy - someone is telling us it's time to retire!

Haha, I'm detecting a certain London bias, which I thought might be the case.

A couple of the venues I have in mind are very close to the relevant stations 40-45 minutes from King's Cross but appreciate venue won't suit all.

I'll keep London responses in mind anyway with venue TBC or in case of future games.

I'm open to this, ElM, but I don't know London (or pitches) very well. I suggested Bedfordshire because I know the area and because it is fairly central, but if London would maximize numbers and if some insider knowledge could help with pitch choice it's an option.

We'll take your red card fine for charity upfront then, Epic. To be honest, Midlands to Bedfordshire isn't a bad trek - I visit old mates from Uni mates up there a fair bit.

We are indeed real, JTD, though not got a lot in the way of top level football teams...

Ruffio, definitely open to non-members, although obviously a Community core would be the intention. I don't think we've necessarily got to the stage of rolling this out nationwide just yet, but obviously if the first one goes OK and there's interest a good night out following a repeat in Liverpool is always welcome.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    Why ignore Lukaku?

With Newcastle and Brighton at home and Watford away Romelu Lukaku looks a fantastic player to own from Gameweek 12.

Against minnows this season he has always delivered a return and has double digit hauls on two occasions.

    WHU 13
    Swa 6
    Stk 6
    EVE 12
    Sou 7
    CRY 6
    hud 5

But so far this week 89,000 managers have shown him the door and I’ve read many posts saying that he is not worth the month.

With a strong track record of being an anti-troll (delivering against minnows and falling flat against bigger sides) will the Belgian be in your GWK 12 side? Or will you be ignoring him?

I want to ignore given his ownership and jammy points and goals so far this season. I would much prefer Aguero to partner Kane. Comes with stress as a non-owner but I don’t think he is nearly as clinical or explosive as the other two

He is so uninspiring to watch. As are United. But he's nailed. Don't fancy captaining him though. Newcastle and Brighton can defend and he's not on pens. I'm probably going to chance it without.

I'll have him upto GW 14 but if Aguerro looks the better option then, Lukaku will make way I feel, especially with Zlatan coming into contention. Lukaku has scored alot of goals late on in matches and if Zlatan is going to be making late cameos then his appeal is further lessened

      He’s going nowhere.

With a premium big-hitter, you’re paying for one of two things: explosive hauls, or reliable consistent returns. Sometimes you get both (Aguero in recent years, Kane last and this season), but Lukaku is definitely the latter just now. Worth every penny.

Just sucks to watch him and his jammy returns as an owner, far more enjoy watching Kane and Aguero, the latter two are also more explosive and captainable as they are on pens and play in sides you expect to score more goals. Think Lukaku gets 2 goals max over the Newcastle and Brighton fixtures, the Watford one is the one I'm worried about. Also have a look at Kun's fixtures over the next 10-15 gws, so many good fixtures.

I sold him for Morata after the Everton game, I then switched to Jesus when Morata got injured. Fully aware he could have punished me and many thought it would happen but it didn't.

I look at the fixtures GW12 onwards though as a non-Lukaku owner and see some serious punishment coming up for those who don't own him. His ownership in my mini-leagues and overall is still very high.

I'll be bringing him back for Aguero after this week.

Happy for Kane fever to grip the market as Lukaku's price tumbles (outside chance of it dropping again this weekend) so I can bring him back for his starting price.

I'm bringing him in for Jesus for the next gameweek as long as he drops in price. Pogba being injured has played a huge role in his lack of goals as he is getting no service.

But those fixtures, the fact he is not being subbed or rested and Pep's rotation means I'd rather opt for someone nailed. When Ibra returns that's when the worry happens.

As long as I have Kane 8being more expensive than him) and captain him, I will not need a non-captain Lukaku at that price. I would have him if he was 1.0 cheaper, but at this price it will not be worth it. I can't risk being without Agüero.

That's the point. I do not fear an opponents' Lukaku based on what he has produced so far. But I can't live without Agüero and a potential hat-trick even this weekend.

Three games and then you don't want him again. I'd rather not spend two transfers on an out of form player even if his record suggests he'll deliver against the minnows.

Lukaku is only good value if UTD find their early season form where UTD in general looked like they would punish teams and he had double figure hauls. This appeared to be closely tied to Pogba. I want to see how they got on without him.

A rotating midfield/Abraham may be better.

My bet is that Kun will outscore Lukaku over the season. He's only 3 points behind him and has missed games through injury, whereas Lukaku has played every minute so far.

Watch him play and you'll realise why myself among others are ignoring him. You're always an advocat for form over fixtures Jonty, and it's not like Toon or Watford are very good fixtures this season anyway?

Will only consider him when Pogba returns, so will be ignoring him regardless of opposition. So far United have looked less threatening without Pogba and therefore decreases the interest for Lukaku. Also, United's value seem to be in defence, so might double up for those fixtures. May be proven wrong and get hurt by it, but could be fruitful if proven right too, so willing to take the risk.

Because the attacking City midfielders with the most minutes are more than matching these stats and at a much cheaper price. Lukaku is fine as a Kane alternative (why would you though?) but when you are likely to captain Harry every week then 11m is too much to spend. I'd much rather go with Vardy or Firmino and invest the rest across the midfield.

Straight in my team for sure.

Looked lively in CL game vs Benfica, especially during last 10 minutes. People keeps saying that Lukaku was "lucky" to score so many goals in dying minutes, but I think its just his thing that he can keep doing vs weaker opposition. Kaku looks tireless and at the end of the game he starts to bully defense.

      Three factors for me:

      1) Will Kun get enough minutes?
      2) When is Pogba back?
      3) Is Ibra coming into the equation?

Easy swap from Kun if the balance tips Kakus way...

for me Brighton, Newcastle and Watford doesn´t seem that good fixtures, so i´ll chance it. Both Brighton and Newcastle are fairly decent at the back and Watford tend to play well vs United. If i´d pick one from them it´s actually Rashford. Look at the teams he played when he got points, all are awful defending and even then he almost without exception scored late which tells me that when they play tougher defences he won´t get those easy chances. Brighton, even if one-nil down won´t do West ham or Swansea/Everton and just surrender, they will fight and Newcastle have Benitez who will frustrate United til the end. That´s my thinking and Aguero and even Firmino looks better options, the latter especially after the break when Pool is back with full strength

I moved him out for this difficult period however he will be straight back in for GK12. Him and Kane are the only two that I would keep for the majority of the season due to their importance to the team and dominance of the points.

Ditched him just before GW10, so I had th chance to buy Richarlison. Gettin’ Kaku back at GW12 fo sho. The reason why he was sold by many managers this GW, is obviously the fact that Kane’s back.

Kaku’s price will rise with 0.2 after GW11, before GW12.

He'll be coming back for me, sold him for these tricky fixtures and don't think it was the wrong move, only Pep, his rotation and Aguero's car crash made it not play out as it should have but the time is right to bring him back, he is afterall, a flat track bully.

I can see why people are opting for Daniels (price and fixtures) but it feels a risk based on how poor Bournemouth look (even now with Ake and Begovic) and how much value there is across the board in defence.

Personally rather the likes of: Moreno, Gomez, Femenia, Duffy, Dunk, Mee, Naughton etc.

Leaning towards b atm. I could afford a much more expensive defender but I don't think I need one in a 343 with the Mee Naughton rotation

    A. Naughton to Daniels
    B. Alonso and Carroll to 4.5 def and Richarlison
    C. Something else
    D. Do nothing

    Begovic Elliot
    Alonso Stones Jones Naughton Mee
    Eriksen Sane Sterling RLC Carroll
    Kane Lukaku Abraham

    2ft 1.1m itb

My front three is a bit dodgy with Kane Morata Vardy but I also have Cedric and Stones who could well become Daniels and Jones over IB

Not sure where my priorities should be with the 2 FTs I'll have
