Rate My Wildcard Team Surgery

Welcome to the latest in a series of regular Rate My Wildcard Team articles that will be published at key points during the season when Fantasy Premier League managers are most likely to consider using this chip.

This article showcases the thoughts of two of the Fantasy Football Scout moderators and contributors team, Andy and Greenwindmill, who are wildcarding. Hopefully some of the key issues facing them will mirror your own.

Feel free to use this article thread to put forward your wildcard teams and to help others with their wildcard related issues.

Andy’s Wildcard Team

Key issues

  • With Manchester United’s Phil Jones (5.5) being his most expensive defender, Andy wonders whether he needs to spend more in defence to give him the flexibility to transfer in emerging, pricier options such as Chelsea’s Cesar Azpiliceuta, who has strong form and fixtures.
  • Will an improved fixture list signal an upturn in form for Andy’s pick of Romelu Lukaku, who historically thrives against minnows? Or will the Red Devils striker continue to deliver only average returns for his hefty price tag?
  • With Chelsea’s Alvaro Morata, Spurs Harry Kane and Lukaku in his frontline is he spending too much in attack?
  • Should Andy consider transferring in more Manchester City attackers? Currently he only has Raheem Sterling, who is not even guaranteed to start. Huge returns from the likes of Sergio Agueo, Leroy Sane or David Silva could see his rank nosedive. If Andy opts for one Sky Blue, would Sane be better?
  • Andy has waved goodbye to Christian Eriksen, ahead of a nice run of fixtures for Tottenham. Will he regret this decision?
  • Stoke’s Eric Choupo-Moting and Watford winger Richarlison are Andy’s preferred third and fourth midfielders, but should he be considering Wilfried Zaha instead of one of this duo?
  • Is a Burnley defensive double up of Nick Pope and Ben Mee wise, considering there is continued speculation linking Clarets boss Sean Dyche with the vacant Everton manager post? Furthermore once usual number one Tom Heaton returns from injury, most likely in January, will that leave Andy having to make an avoidable goalkeeper transfer?
  • Is Scott Dann a ‘magic bean’ too far? Crystal Palace have failed to earn a single clean sheet although the centre back’s fairytale attacking statistics do provide good reading.

Greenwindmill’s Wildcard Team

Key issues

  • Greenwindmill is keen to spread his budget well across all outfield positions to give him a strong 15 to cope with the busy winter fixture list. This involves two heavy hitters in midfield, two in attack and at the back representatives from three of the top four sides. Is he right to do this or should he look to focus more cash in one area, such as midfield?
  • Value for money has driven his selection. He believes that all 15 will justify their price tags. Are there any other well priced gems he should be considering?
  • Crystal Palace’s Julian Speroni has emerged as a strong budget stopper to be fielded alongside Newcastle’s Rob Elliot. Is the Eagles keeper really nailed on, or will Newcastle fan Greenwindmill be forced to field Elliot every week?
  • Like Andy, Greenwindmill has been entranced by Dann’s strong fixtures and attacking statistics. But with just 12 points so far will this magic bean ever become a double digit scoring beanstalk?
  • At home Liverpool’s defence is a work of art on fine canvass but away a mere scrappy sketch on the back of a napkin. Should Greenwindmill be putting faith in a Reds defender who cannot safely be fielded on the road?
  • Greenwindmill has shunned the Burnley defence. Is this a disastrous move, considering their clean sheet potential at home and strong bonus potential?
  • With Reuben Loftus-Cheek involved Greenwindmill has tripled up on Crystal Palace players? Is this too much coverage for a side that is already battling relegation? And what if Wilfried Zaha becomes a must-have asset?
  • Swansea’s Tammy Abraham is his favoured third striker, but should Greenwindmill be considering even cheaper options such as Everton’s Oumar Niasse or Bournemouth’s Callum Wilson or Josh King? Or should Greenwindmill instead opt for a strong premium priced frontline as Andy has?
  • Lukaku is in place as a potential short term move, to be replaced by Morata in Gamweek 14, when Chelsea’s fixtures improve. Is this a sound strategy? Will he regret not swooping for the Spanish striker earlier?

I think minimising your magic beans is key. The likes of Dann and Loftus Cheek and Abraham are great enablers and are capable of occasionally delivering. But you don't want to be over reliant on them - that was a key mistake many of the GWK 4 wildcarders made.

You both have around five of these players which may possibly be one too many. Three to bench is fine but that means you have to play at least two beans every week.

Another key issue here is what to do with Man City.

A key success of GWK 6 wildcarders was to focus on the Sky Blues. Although they have been prone to rotation, Sterling, Sane, Jesus, Aguero, Silva have all delivered. I don't think that will stop so I'd perhaps consider two City attackers.

While Morata v Lukaku seems a big decision I think with their fixtures both will do well. It may well be that they will match each other.

Good luck. Look forward to seeing what others have to say and also seeing some more RMWCTs in this thread.

If we’re counting Richarlison as a magic bean then this argument is invalid.

He’s providing consistent points and you know where they’re gonna come from. Away games.

The whole point of a magic bean is that they score points sparsely and you can’t predict where.

I didn't include him although long term he's not a great option if you can never play him at home.

I prefer Andy’s team, his problem always was his 3rd striker slot, with 3 big hitters one can be easily downgraded if a cheap 3rd striker emerges .. in order to upgrade Mid or Def..

Regarding Morata v Lukaku, I would have thought Lukaku was the obvious choice. Best captain option for the next two GWs and can be easily downgraded to Morata in GW14.

I think Greenwindmill's strategy makes sense Lukaku then Morata GWK 14/15 . It's what I'll look to do I think (not wildcarding btw - that ship has sailed).

I think a cheap forward is the way forward with Abraham or similar. This leaves more room for another heavy hitter in midfield such as Sane, Mane, Eriksen etc. Choosing one premium forward (I have Kane) & then rotating Morata, Lukaku etc. with relative fixtures. Andy maybe doesn't have enough in defence and Greenwindmill too much? I think as above they could both do with strengthening their midfield. If I was wild carding now I'd have Sterling and Sane.

Assume you're including goalkeepers in this 'magic bean' assessment - can't work out who the 5 are otherwise! 🙂

        Maybe four then.

RLC - in an awful team
Abraham - in an awful team
Moreno - can't be played away
Dann - in an awful team and failing to deliver on stats

Ramsey - I'll probably upgrade him to mini beanstalk. Its just Arsenal's troll worthy form that worries me. Never quite know when there goals will come. The combo of him and Richarlison - useless at home - though could make two halves of a bean 🙂

I realise I am a few days late, but if anyone is still reading this thread I'd be grateful for thoughts on this WC, my approach is pretty obvious. No City def for now but might get Ota back soon. Don't usually have a premium GK but think DDG is worth it.
      DDG, Elliott
      Jones, Azpi, Mee, Duffy, Moreno
      Salah, Sane, Sterling, Richarlison, RLC
      Kane, Morata, Quaner

looks really strong WC. Only weak point i see is non playing Quaner. You could either take the risk you'll never need him, or swap Richarlison to Gross/chupo-moting and upgarde hom to Niasse or DCL. Only minor points though, the basis thrust of the wildcard I like 🙂

Looks very strong. My only query would be whether you've checked the rotation in defence given that you're set up to play either 4-4-2 or 3-5-2.

Given RLC's fixtures, there's a danger you'll want to play him and then may have overspent on your fourth and fifth defenders.

Just something to be wary off that might allow you to upgrade Quaner to Niasse or DLC perhaps?

Thanks for the feedback guys. Yes I'm playing 442, and am gambling on never needing quaner. I'd like to upgrade him but have a poor team value this season, and really don't want to downgrade any mids. Only option I'd consider is DDG to Pope to allow an upgrade of RLC or Quaner, but is that really worth it? I know Pope is great value right now but I just think it's a risk not with taking, versus an almost weekly CS and the odd bonus from DDG.

Wasn't actually your post that I removed - it was the start of that thread which was made by another poster that went - but once that went all subsequent replies went too.

Whole thing was just turning into a bit of a slanging match really, so unsurprisingly was removed.

Currently on a wildcard myself. My team has quite a few similarities to Andy’s - also set on a big front three. The cheap defenders and goalies rotate well, and the bench is strong enough to cope when Sterling gets the odd 0 mins game, which is inevitable at some point.

    Elliot • Speroni
    Stones • Jones • Daniels • Mee • Dunk
    Salah • Sterling • Richarlison • Groß • Loftus-Cheek
    Kane • Lukaku • Morata

I’m tempted to go with Simpson over Daniels, particularly if he drops to £4.4m. Allows for pretty much the same good fixture rotation and funds in the bank to move Stones out for a Spurs centre back down the road if Kompany takes away his gametime.

Got to love wildcard tinkering 🙂

Like the Azpi pick. Abraham means you have the luxury of investing him in.

Only issue though is if you want to get Morata and/or Lukaku. Always good to have an exit plan where you can get anyone you want within just two moves.

    2. The Burnley triple up - who’s a better 4.5 to have apart form tarkowski? I’m looking at each position on its merits and feel tawrkowski is the best 4.5 option bar mee and Moreno.

I'm not bothered at all by 2 Burnley defenders - sure some risk but they won't let in many goals. I wildcarded in GW6. For what it's worth my team right now focuses on midfield strength and flexibility, cheap defence and a mid-priced strike force - I will probably swap Vardy for Morata soon but I feel that Rashford is more than adequate to cover an under-firing Lukaku. Here's my team...

          Elliott/Speroni
Mee/Ward/Francis/Naughton/Mbembe (will swap him for Mariappa when I get the chance)
          Eriksen/Salah/Sterling/Silva/Richarlison
          Vardy/Rashford/Kane

Really like the Ramsey pick by Greenwindmill. I know he comes in a little more expensive than Richarlison and over £1m more than Gross, but his returns have been solid and consistent, he plays for a team who will score goals, with some extremely creative players and will occasionally put teams to the sword (Everton). At £7m, I think he's impossible to ignore, not to mention he's not particularly at risk of rotation as long as he stay fit

Not too many Azpi's popping up, is it the price for Mr. Consistent?

Contemplating getting him in for Davies, but it means dropping Monreal for me and going without the Spurs defence. Otherwise, it's just Vertongen in for Davies.

Azpi (in for Davies) + Mee (in for Monreal) -4

    or

Vertingen in for Davies for free?

Monreal, Jones, Otamendi, Davies and Humumumnmner are the defs

Avoid hits in defence is my normal view. Might be value in Mee for Monreal this week so that you have the cash to upgrade Davies next week.

Or looking at your second option, Davies should start this week, and offers more attacking threat than Vert. Keep then re-evaluate

Hmm, yeah and neither price should change for the Spurs boys

Mee in could be good but Davies is annoying me tbh. That much for rotation isn't worth it

Shouldn’t Eden be a more viable option for WCers starting to get into form. Big differential with proven pedigree with decent captain shouts.

He has played more centrally than the norm and even as a second striker.

In a nutshell is Hazard worth WC in to go for 3-5-2 (Lukaku and Kane)?

I think he's a good option - its just for that price I'd prefer him to do more away - other than when he faces Bou. Will be monitoring his away form though.

Jonty for the run of fixtures up to GWK 21:

        A) Tottenham premium def
        B) Chelsea premium def

Have to go Azpi - nailed, bonus, assists....clean sheets...the lot

          Spurs best is Vertongnen.

This is pretty much my thinking. And there's good options just below his price point, whereas with Morata you have to then drop significantly in price and points to find anyone worth their price

Other side of that argument is that you can replace Eden if you become unhappy. Morata leaves no options other than Jesus and Laca *facepalm*

This is the beauty, there's no right answer. There's no power five. I'd say there's only about 4/5 players who are "template". Makes for much more interesting weekends

He will arguably score more goals than KdB and Eriksen even if he gets romped in BPS.

I just feel he is more essential for his team to score in direct impact than the other heralded FPL assets

i, like many i have seen, am very close to andys team.
    elliot speroni
    duffy mee jones daniels, hunemier
    sane salah rich gross rlc
    kane morata aguero

i know having only 14 players may be a problem but it means having sane over sterling. also aguero can turn to kaku anytime.
unfortunately no place for good picks like azpi or differentials like mahrez.

on a side note, why does RMT show silva and sterling above sane? am i missing something?

Slinging mine in here even though I'm pretty settled on it, would appreciate thoughts:

    Pope / Elliot
    Jones / Azpi / Moreno* / Duffy / Mee
    Salah / Sane / Sterling / Richarlison / Gross
    Kane / Morata / Niasse

Ideally would be nice to have Lukaku for the next two, but not willing to tear my team apart for it. Alternative suggestions to Moreno would be appreciated 🙂

Problem I’ve got at the minute is I’ve removed all City apart from Aguero.

I’ve got Kane, Morata and Aguero upfront and I’m looking to move Aguero in for a more reliable captain option in Lukaku.

Is no City and going for nailed on starters too much of a risk? My back-up is to downgrade Eriksen to a City mid unless he starts producing in the next 2-3 weeks.

For WCers given the run of fixtures up to GWK 21:

    A) Verts, Alderweireld (better defense, but less BAPS shout with more offensive hauling players)

    B) Azpi/Alonso (much better fixtures all the way and better BAPS potential)

    1. Speédy

      B)Alonso as a differential

Depends also on how much Spurs,Chelsea attackers you have. I would say B. To me Azpi is worth the cash as in a Chelsea game he can easily hog the BAPS, maybe not Vert,Alder so much with Kane,Alli.Erik

Yeah might do that- just thinking busy Xmas schedule will bring Robertson into play and Gomez may rotate with Klavan and Lovren...

Also unsure if Lukaku is better now- then Morata in a couple of weeks. Means Niasse instead of Murray...

    Here's my current WC team.

    Pope/Elliot
    Azpi, Jones, Mee, Daniels/Mariappa
    Salah, Sane, Sterling, Richarlison/Cork
    Kane, Aguero/DCL

I'm thinking of having Lukaku instead of Aguero, seeing as I have two city midfielders. Still want Morata though, it's tough.

      • 8 Years
      6 years, 5 months ago

Do you have anything in the bank?

Going into winter with a 4.0m non-playing defender, while having many rotation risks in the team (Sane, Sterling, Aguero, maybe even Jones when Rojo is back and DCL) is ballsy - but indeed allows for a great midfield.

Regarding your strikeforce, it depends on what approach you want to take, the safer one is definitely with having 2 City mids and Lukaku. Tbh I expect both Aguero and Lukaku to deliver well in the upcoming weeks. Personally, I am going with Lukaku, Sane and Sterling on WC to spread the risk and I am also considering to captain Lukaku (NEW, BRI) - I wouldn't feel confident to give the armband to Sergio.

    Hi Jonty and lads,

My Wildcard team atm is: Pope/Elliot

    Mee,Duffy,Azpi,Jones,Francis
Salah,Sterling,Richarlison,Zaha(this spot is my undecided area),RLC
    Kane,Lukaku,Murray

Leaves 1.6 ITB should I want to make any moves. Zaha could become Gross,Pogba(depending on team news close to deadline) or Ramsey.

My team has been similar to Andy's so far barring the defence and him having Richarlison this past gameweek while I had Silva.

    Thoughts?

Yeah, something to ponder. You'll have the option of playing Niasse or RLC if one plays well. They have the potential to be explosive unlike players such as Joselu or Tom Carroll.

    De Gea - Elliot
    Otamendi - Jones - Christensen - Daniels - Mee
    Salah - Sané - Sterling - Richarlison - RLC
    Lukaku - Morata - Niasse

0.6 left over - tempted to keep it though.

Christensen probably not nailed on? Hard to tell if Niasse is either? No Kane does worry though. Consider Courtois in goal instead of DDG as you have Jones as cover, and you gain cheap access to Chelsea defence over their good fixtures.

      1. DivocksHighSocks
        • 6 Years
        6 years, 5 months ago

have had DDG from the start, he's been excellent for me so far.

Christensen is a risk, but at 5.4 at Conte suddenly deciding Luiz isn't in the team he's worth a punt I feel.

Niasse might go, was considering Abraham and Murray but the 4.9 price spun it for me.

Think I'll get rid of Lukaku (hopefully he'll price rise having banged a few in) for Kane in 2 weeks time
