The Technical Area – Assessing De Gea

Minimising investment in goalkeepers has long been a popular adage among seasoned Fantasy managers. Year after year, we find ourselves searching for budget offerings who offer the sought-after combination of clean sheet and save-point potential.

The wider meta, however, often runs contrary to this strategy – with premium goalkeepers such as Thibaut Courtois, Hugo Lloris and David de Gea consistently ranking among the most popular players in Fantasy Premier League in terms of ownership.

Does anybody use the influence/creativity/threat/ICT index tabs on the FPL website and pay much attention?

I've always gone off impulse and the eye test but this season, maybe in part being on here for the first time and noting xG and xA, I've paid a bit more attention to the statistical side of things.

Should we really use these stats to make our decision on transfers? Or just rely on our impulse and the form of the player and his respective team?

    I blame Jonty.

I always go on impulse but if I'm torn in decision then I'll turn to stats to help me out, what fun is a game if you're told what to do by a computer..?

        This ^^

All this XG, XA, triple x can all be quite misleading. We would all have Tadic and joselu in our teams 🙂

Impulse and form over numbers imo. I use numbers only if there is 2 players I can't decide between. Obviously if you don't watch the games then I see they can be helpful but stats really are overrated and don't tell a story

I'm a big fan of stats obviously but use them as just one element of my decision making.

For me, I find that data either creates a lead on a player, or confirms it. As the data gets better and more thorough, it becomes better at both roles - xGI, in particular, is a very compelling addition. However I don't consciously make a decision on data alone.

Even it works, it's always worth blaming Jonty.

The data's useful but if that's all that matters then I'd be able to compete in Fantasy NFL which, I can assure you, but be an afront to global sports generally. I was looking at the team xGC stats yesterday, though, and they were properly noteworthy. Definitely changed my mid-term plans.

I started playing fpl gw12 last year, having never seen a premier league or knowing a single player. Had a €250 bet with a friend it was a game about maths rather than soccer knowledge. Picked a team solely on ICT etc from fpl site.
Smashed it and was 100 points ahead within weeks of starting.

Eriksen to Salah a no brainer?

The Dane has another tough game against ROI whilst Salah puts his feet up.

Have another FT , do I change my current front 3?
    Kane - Jesus - Morata

    Lukakuless could hurt me.
Maybe downgrade Jesus to Rashford for cover and save funds for next week?

I just don't see the prospect of Jesus with the constant rotation and obviously not as guaranteed as we thought in the beginning of the season. Much more consistent points out there.

I think so. Got no sympathy for the team on the receiving end though. They have over 3 months to strike a deal, if you really want the player you shouldn't leave it to the last day never mind the last few hours.

    Are Palace's players being overhyped?
Their upcoming fixtures may look good, but they still are at the bottom of the table and have to prove they're worth investing in.
Having said that, if you have Loftus, do you plan playing him this gameweek while benching someone more expensive?
I own Carroll and switching to RLC has crossed my mind, but still it'd be hard to bench someone else before him..

They are very cheap and nailed in fairness, I think that's a big part of the appeal. If Scott Dann was 5.5 for example they're wouldn't be a lot of interest, or if Sperrin was 4.5, Zaha was 7.5 etc

    Foster Elliott
    Jones Ward Fernandez Kiko Rosenoir
    Salah Richarilson Sterling Gross TC
    Lukaku Kane Kun

    2FTs, 0.6m and a wildcard in hand.

The safe correct thing to do would be to get one of Pope/Speroni and Moreno/Dann for Foster and Fernandez. Think I might do a mini wildcard and get Speroni Francis and Zaha for Foster Fernandez and Gross. Sane and Morata on my watchlist but no space in the inn at the moment. Thoughts?

      Kane + Fernandez - combined price 17.3m - combined points 101 - combined form - 6.3

      Azpi + Morata - combined price 17.1m - combined points 130 - combined form - 13.7

i currently have Andre Gray , i brought him in for the 3 nice fixtures while Deeney is suspended , he got me 5 points in his first game for me which was an ok start , he now has 2 more games to impress or else he'll be banished into the wilderness whence he came

Don't want to start the whole second guessing Pep game but is Jesus favoured in starting games away from home? Perhaps for his work rate. Any thoughts are appreciated. Need to remove one of Jesus or Firmino this week for Morata.

Hoping that Aguero's air miles will count against him and Jesus will start at the weekend. Either way, I'm selling him the week after as he isn't good value.

Any of these routes worth it for Salah?

    Fab Elliot
    Azpi Ota Jones Ward Simpson
    Haz Sterling Richarlison Tarroll Stephens
    Kane Jesus Vardy

    A) Ota Stephens Vardy > Duffy Salah Niasse -4 (allows Jesus > Morata next gw)
    B) Ota Haz Vardy > Duffy Salah Morata -4 (allows Jesus > Lukaku)
    C) Sterling Vardy > Salah Abraham (allows Jesus > Kun Kaku Morata)

Depends what other captiancy candidates you have, I'd try and avoid the hit.

Keep Cresswell this week away at Watford or make the transfer to Daniels/Jones? (Depending on Jones' fitness)

Is it wise to keep Luiz and see if he plays? Got Duffy on my bench to come in for him if he doesn't play but also got still 1FT and no Jones in my team..

Blimey. I'd missed your return. Good to see you about.

I'm trying to find your first ever post now but it pre-dates HomeCrowd so would have to plunder the zipped up archives!.
