The ScoutCast – Episode 239 – Homecoming

Declared fit and available for selection, I make a return to the ScoutCast after a recent hiatus. I’m also chuffed to be welcomed back into the bosom of my own home, as the winter draws in and drives me from the Scout Hut at the end of the garden.

Warming my cockles alongside Jonty and Az, the three of us are treated to another ScoutCast Wildcard, as Andy joins us and throws his selection to the cynical lions.

We use that as inspiration to answer your community questions, pondering Andy’s all-powerful front three and wondering if overlooking a budget third striker is the optimum set-up.

Staying with strikers, Romelu Lukaku’s worrisome form comes under analysis ahead of his anticipated revival and, once again, we give Harry Kane oxygen to vent further frustration following his very latest Wembley Stadium stutter.

Manchester City’s weapon(s) of choice get(s) revised before we embark on the weekend preview to exorcise the international break and lay the groundwork for a Christmas schedule of epic proportions.

This ScoutCast was first beamed live via our YouTube channel on Tuesday night. Be sure to subscribe to get notice of future live episodes.

If you’re a traditional type, you can acquire the mp3 audio version via this link on the first player below, or take in the full visual experience via the second player below.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Which looks the best bet for my 2nd FT

    A. Mbemba - > Daniels

    B. Foster - > Pope

    C. Aguero - > Lukaku

    D. Save

      A or B

With A I'm always wary of bringing a 5th defender who's a bit TOO good! If you know what I mean. Benching problems and the like.

I suppose it's better than someone guaranteed a 0 and no point bringing in someone sh*t at the same price just do I know they went score well 🙂

Sorry I missread your post. The way I'd think of it is there's roughly a 50% change you'll only have 2 defenders playing this week. So let's assume your 3rd defender will get 2 points (EV). So for the -4 to be worth it you need a defender brought in that'll get 6 points this week. Chances of that (CS) are 50/50 at best so EV of 6. So not worth it for this week and Iwouldn't worry about a fielding 2 defenders. I stress 'this week' because long term it's more complicated. Maybe Davies to a guaranteed started e.g. Daniels

    Bottomed

I'm looking at Mbemba > Daniels + Joselu > Niasse for -4, what do you think?
My justification for Daniels is my defensive crisis for this week, wanted to downgrade Davies but as he has a better chance of starting than most, I think upgrading the non-playing Mbemba is the better move though ill still be lucky to get 2 starting defs!
Justification for the hit, Joselu was a failed punt, his stats showed potential, but it hasn't worked out, he has Utd away & he has to go, in danger of being dropped too. Do I think the in form Niasse with 4 goals in 6 can outscore him over the next 6 GWs? Absolutely
Gives me this with 0.6 ITB

    Pope, Elliot
    Jones, Davies, Otamendi, Lowe, Daniels
    Eriksen, Silva, Salah, Richarlison, Carroll
    Kane, Jesus, Niasse

Not sure. Niasse + Carroll + defensive crisis would still be dodgy. Could you do Joselu to Abraham or Murray and still afford a 4.5 def?

The big divide between teams so far is whether they go for 3 10m+ strikers or they go for a benched starting striker and use that extra 4-5 million in improving the 3rd midfielder to a player around 9.5million.

    Here's my team:

    Elliot (Speroni)
Azpi Daniels S. Ward (Gomez) (Duffy)
    Sane Salah Groß Richarlison (RLC)
    Morata Aguero Kane

Now if I switched out Morata for Murray, I'd be able to upgrade Groß to around 10.2m or upgrade RLC to around 9.1m.

    So it's essentially:

    Morata + Groß/RLC ---> Murray + 9m-10m midfielder.

Since Morata and the top heavy midfielder will be reasonably the same, it comes down to whether Groß is better than Murray.

Personally I'd take Groß over Murray because he's nailed, takes set pieces and can get goals.

    1. Jayv807
      • 7 Years
      6 years, 5 months ago

You are assuming a straight Gross/Morata to Murray/xxxx swap where xxxx is similar price to Morata.

You could instead, for example, swap Aguero to Niasse (as your bench fodder), upgrade RLC to Sterling or Silva and still have around 3m left over to upgrade Gross or your defense or your keeper etc.

You have to spend 10m+ for a reliable forward where in midfield there is value in the lower priced ranges.

      Either could work IMO

      1. Fanta sea
        • 8 Years
        6 years, 5 months ago

That's a good point. The only issue is if Sterling and the extra 3 million will make up the points haul from Aguero and RLC. I'm don't think Sterling is a great fantasy prospect based on his benching issues. If I switched to Silva, he's not getting me Aguero type points.

That’s a tad over-simplistic but if we look what you can get for your money ppm is interesting.
there are 5 def getting at least 6ppm. That’s 30ppm for a total cost of 29.1
there are 6 mid getting at least 6ppm. Taking the top 5 that’s 33.8ppm for a total cost of 43.3
there are 3 fwd getting at least 6ppm. That’s 21.1ppm for a total cost of 34.9

the upside of the premium strikers is that kun, kane and Morata are pulling away so its easier to pick who you should have over other positions, but they're not good value in terms of cost per point.

      1. Fanta sea
        • 8 Years
        6 years, 5 months ago

If we go by points per match as you say then there are
3 defenders that hit 6 or more. (Prodl and Rose do not count due to limited gametime)
4 midfielders that hit 6 or more (Pogba and Chadli do not count)
3 Strikers that hit 6 or more.

        Total cost of each = Def (18.3m) - Mid (35.3m) - Fwd (34.6m)

Next you work out the average PPM per category to make it more accurate. Def (6.2) - Mid (6.5) - Fwd (7)

Now we have to find out the value per PPM. Def (3) - Mid (5.4) - Fwd (4.9)

So technically it's actually better to buy defenders first, then forwards and then Midfielders if we go by using the players that have 6 or more points per match. For each 5.4m I spend on a midfielder, I'll be getting 1 point back in return on average.

Tbh either is fine. It really doesn't matter too much. The evidence in terms of points is that Azpi has done better but that doesn't mean that Alonso can't do better from here on out. I do think Alonso will probably do better but Azpi was cheaper so I'd go with the cheap option.

KdB to downgrade for sure. Silva for the reliable starter - scored in international break and the assists will come back soon.

1.7m the difference in price. 3 points is all that separates them

I'm not denying KDB is a good pick I just don't think their roles within the team justify a 1.7m difference

If the assist for the assister got points then KdB would become a must. Not the case though

Ramsey to richarlison and daniels to 4.5.
Otherwise it's gotta be ddg or Kdb out.

Why the hell would you sell Ramsay for Richarlison and downgrade Daniels. I have Richarlison since GW 4. He's so overhyped for inability to hit target and fixtures turn bad soon

I sold him like a fool after having him for a few weeks. Was trying to be clever dealing with Aguero then morata injuries by shifting to Hazard. Happy with mids now sane sterling salah alli but I wish I had richarlison back instead. I'll probably go without until after the Tottenham and Chelsea games now

Yeah, that's why I was curious if Kiwi sold him. He's returned in 5 of the last 6. I'm not sure what more you'd expect or want from a 6.2 (now 6.5) midfielder.

Me either mate. He's class. Still rough around the edges with a lot of developing ahead but for fpl he's great value.

Obviously because he wants to raise 0.7. Regardless of what your statistics tell you or the fact the you have had him since gw4 richarlison is a quality player that will continue to score well.

      Ramsey to Richarlison
      Elliott to Speroni
      Surman to Romeu

If you are well and truly stuck on keeping KDB AND Abrahham, then your best move is probably Ramsey to Richarlison, and Daniels to someone like Francis.

Personally, I'd heed the recommendations here and downgrade KDB. It could do wonders for the rest of your side.

Team good to go? Have 0 FT and 0.2 cash:
    Fabianski
    Bailey, jones, tarkowski, Vertonghen
    Salah (c), Richarlison, Grob
    Kane, Morata (vc), Aguero

    Elliot: Carroll, Atsu, Otamendi

Jones - Dann if you didnt get Jones cheap. Ramsey - Zaha to get rest of money if needed
Could also downgrade KDB or Sane to Sterling or Silva

    A. Foster - > Speroni (Elliot other keeper)

    B. Mbemba - > Daniels/Dann

Either one would be a FT

I'd get rid of Mbemba, having a strong bench is key this time of year with so much rotation.
