The Community Round-Up

Wildcard timing, the form of premium strikers and the fallout from the international break dominate this week’s discussions as the community eagerly anticipates the return of domestic action.

Our round-up also takes in the latest community articles, with our resident scribes full of advice on the best players to hand the captaincy to and where to find clean sheets in Gameweek 12.

Meanwhile, our Members’ Area statisticians have been busy gathering the latest data on teams with a strong run of fixtures over the coming weeks.

The Community Articles

The form and fixture data, analysed by YMA, strongly backs Harry Kane for the armband ahead of the Spurs striker’s trip to Arsenal. However, as the Career of Fame hall of fame top five, being tracked by Top Marx, found out in Gameweek 11 when he blanked at home to Crystal Palace, it can be costly to put too much faith in the Spurs talisman.

The crowd are also anticipating strong attacking returns from Spurs, but believe only one team is capable of keeping a clean sheet over the next set of fixtures, says Hutch_James.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got some analysis, scout reports or features brewing, be sure to visit our community section to submit your article.

The Hottest Topics

Among the key lessons learned from our analysis of the Hall of Fame top ten managers is that Wildcard timing is key, with those who used this chip early missing out on Manchester City’s upturn in form.

Dugout followed this up by inviting Fantasy managers to take part in his survey of their ranks and when they played their Wildcard. After sifting through around 100 responses, he has been able to reveal whether the wider community’s experience mirrored that of this elite group.

All of the Hall of Fame top ten have kept their Free Hit chip in their pocket, with a deployment around the second half of the season blank fixtures likely. But Rhinos wonders whether using them during a double Gameweek may prove more lucrative.

Key issues for those Wildcarding this week, according to Jacky Boy, include whether to seize the opportunity to triple up on the array of premium strikers who have strong fixtures on the horizon.

Among those under consideration is Manchester United marksman Romelu Lukaku, who has split the community between those who have been left unimpressed by his failure to find the net since Gameweek 7, and those who think he will return to form in style with Newcastle’s visit.

Manchester City’s strike duo of Gabriel Jesus and Sergio Aguero are also among the heavy-hitters under consideration. But when we asked for your views on the best Sky Blues cover it is their midfield where most of the interest lies.

Rotation is a key factor when deciding on which of Pep Guardiola’s troops to pick and, as FPL Freddo pointed out, this makes it difficult to captain their Argentine forward in particular.  Hobolicious is also unsure whether Aguero is worth handing the armband to this season.

There has been less chat this week around Kane, with his team-mate Christian Eriksen instead attracting attention as his hat-trick against Ireland took Denmark to the World Cup in Russia next year. Jinswick wonders whether the 70,000+ FPL managers to ditch the midfielder may regret that move in light of his international exploits.

Another player to catch the eye on international duty is Liverpool’s Joe Gomez, who impressed in both England friendlies against Germany and Brazil. Wakey believes the defender could be a strong option for home games, particularly as he looks set to continue at right-back with Nathaniel Clyne sidelined for another three months after undergoing back surgery this week.

The Reds defender was handed his England debut, against Germany, after coming on for the injured Phil Jones, who will out for Manchester United at home to Newcastle this weekend, according to Jose Mourinho. Given the previous concerns surrounding the centre-back’s fitness, we asked his owners whether he is still worth keeping ahead of the busy Christmas schedule.

With Crystal Palace’s Ruben Loftus-Cheek also impressing for England, we also canvassed your views on how Fantasy managers can best use the ‘eye-test’ to assess Fantasy potential.

you must be going very heavy top with this back line, not for me I must say, couple of injuries and you’d struggle to find decency defensive options unless you have someone like Simpson who you could downgrade, so i’d go him. plus puel will set Leicester up defensively

every time jones plays he’ll have a good chance at at least 6 points all season
gross can’t keep pace with that, even if he gets more minutes

I’m firmly in the gold camp. can you name any other player with the points potential in that price bracket? you can’t match it until you go past the 6mil mark. if you got him in during the early gws then it goes double. unless he gets a lengthy injury I think he’s the best value def this season

Think it's probably worth ditching Jones. He'll drop at least 0.1m if he doesn't play this gw and then he has Brighton and Watford in quick succession, he'll likely miss at least one of those. Then it's Arsenal and City for him. I think both could score. Some may bring up how they've done vs big teams this season but a clean sheet v Spurs doesn't mean much as they always roll over and have their bellies ticked vs United & it was a miracle we didn't score vs them

Being realistic, Zlatan is probably more of a benefit to Lukaku than a threat, right? The guy is 36 & has just came back from a serious knee injury. If anything is he likely to be more of an impact sub to try win games in the last 20-25 mins, with the odd start here & there in th hectic Christmas period.

Not many players come back with immediate impact after an ACL reconstruction. I wouldn't panic. There will be plenty of early warning signs if it's going to effect Lukaku negatively

i think he is a threat because one of the obvious advantages of paying 11.5 for lukaku is a guaranteed 90 minutes week in week. with ibra back in this will no longer be the case and i may get rid for morata in gw14. that being said if zlatan plays the no.10 role i think this will benefit lukaku as ibra should perform better than mhitaryan is at the moment

      1 - a Burnley defender
      2 - Moreno/Gomez
      3 - Daniels

just check out the team defensive stats in members area between Liverpool and Bournemouth
Daniels and Moreno fairly matched for their attacking potential, and the clincher is the .2 mil saving for me

On the myth of points ceilings:

Question for those with captaincy dilemmas: "Should I captain DDG or Kane this week?"

If you asked yourself this question every week and choose Kane because he has a 'higher ceiling', you'd have the same points as if you chose DDG every week instead (DDG's ceiling so far has only been 9 points). If you asked the question 'who is likely to outscore the other?', perhaps you'd give yourself a chance to get more points that either DDG or Kane did independently.

This is why I think the concept of a 'ceiling' is misguiding. The concept is actually BS in general, since it implies there is an absolute maximum, when in reality there's a gradual reduction of likelihood with each additional point each player (not claiming that it's linear, of course). A defender (e.g. Azpi) can only get one CS; after that, he is less likely to get attacking returns than the main striker in his team (e.g. Morata) to go with his CS. This means the striker would score more points in a game that lasted forever. But what about 90 mins?

The best question to ask is simply, 'who is likely to score more points?'!

Make it easier for yourself. Simply forget about ceilings unless you're willing to figure out the probability distributions of points (across the 90 mins). Otherwise you're making decisions based on how variable particular player scores are from week to week. If somebody explodes some weeks and stays quiet other weeks, and has the same high 'ceiling' in both, then you're not maximising your points if someone with a lower 'ceiling' was likely to (and did) get more points across those 2 games.

If you're not factoring the degree of variability into the equation, then you are already asking the question, 'who is likely to score more points', and that has nothing to do with ceilings!

I agree with your principle but the main risk with (c) a defender for me is one slip up and they have v little chance of points return, 0 chance if a keeper

with a striker/mid even if they are losing there’s a chance they could still score if not haul

      1. Deulofail
        • 8 Years
        6 years, 5 months ago

You're still talking about the probability of a CS of the defender vs a goal for the attacker.

But you're talking about it from the eyes of a football spectator. Fair enough if that's how you want to make your decisions, but it doesn't change the probabilities of these events actually occurring 🙂

    3. noquarternt
      • 8 Years
      6 years, 5 months ago

You're looking at it from the wrong angle.

One goal and all your DDG points are gone. Kane can score a hattrick in less than 5 mins.

There's always hope and a much much higher ceiling. Who were the top 5 FPL scoring players at the end of each season? Or even each gameweek? They'll be Midfielders or Forwards for the most part, aside from a certain double penalty save from Gomes.

This is why you should always captain an attacker.

      1. Deulofail
        • 8 Years

This is why.... Yes I agree..... Because they will get more points is the reason they will get more points. Nothing to do with a ceiling.

        The point is that someone with a low 'ceiling' can score 7 + 7 + 7 + 7 + 7 +7 (=42), whereas someone with a high 'ceiling' might only score 15 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 (= 25).

Kane scores more points than DDG over the course of the season because his chances of points is higher in general, not because his ceiling is higher. DDG could make 10 penalty saves in a game, but it's extremely UNLIKELY.

His chance of points is higher because his ceiling is higher. That's what a 'chance of points' is. Of course captain fails occur weekly, but people are trying to grab the huge hauls that occur every year.

The one week where Kane Sanchez Hazard Or Agüero gets 25+ points makes up for the previous blanks.

            Except when it doesn't...

You can't possibly know if a huge score will counterbalance previous blanks unless you take into account the 'chance of points' (which isn't the same thing as a ceiling).

Take a hypothetical player called Kane, who scores hattricks every 4 games. And now another player called Lukaku, who scores a goal every game. Kane has a higher ceiling, apparently, because he is prone to scoring sprees. However if you captain the player with the lower ceiling, Lukaku, every week, you will outscore the manager who choose the player with the highest ceiling In this scenario, Lukaku has a higher 'chance of points', whereas Lukaku has a higher 'ceiling'. This is a simplified version of the game, granted, but it still demonstrates the overall average disadvantage of using an abstract, ill-defined and ungrounded notion of a 'ceiling' to make decisions.)

The fact that top strikers tend to score more than top defenders links well with the idea that strikers have a higher ceiling in our heads, but the link doesn't exist. The 'chance of points' exists independent of that 'fact' because the fact doesn't take into account all the defenders that are outscoring strikers, nor the numbers of players in each position, nor the game/season/player/team/FPL rule-specific factors that resulted in that distribution. The fact that Kane CAN score more also doesn't entail that he is likely to score more this week (or in general). Likewise, it doesn't entail that DDG or Azpi are likely to score less this week.

The basic point I'm trying to make is that if you average out your captains across the season, you'll realise you did better basing your decision on probability rather than limiting yourself to pre-set rules about who can (and therefore will) score more, because that's not how probability works.

Help me guys, I've been foolish.

I used my free transfer to get Phil Jones early before his injury (stupid I know), but should I be sticking with what I have or explore a -4 for someone?

    De Gea
    Bailly Bertrand Gomez
    Steve Davis, Eriksen Sane Fabregas
    Jesus Kane (c) Abraham

    Bench: Lossl Carroll *Otamendi *Jones

    £0m available.

Please help. Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Just leave it now I would say, what if mourinho is bluffing? I don’t think he is this time but how angry will you be if he starts and you’ve taken a hit.
in the long run it’ll be fine

Thank you. And you've just made me realise it's best to start Jones because it could well be a bluff

I’ll always be thankful for him climbing off my bench with 9 points in gameweek three. Mini-League rivals were absolutely spewing over that 😆

    Outrageous predictions for tomorrow:

Aguero to be benched, Lukaku to start, cue jeers and cheers...

Aguero goes on to outscore Lukaku by 9 points to 5 in a 26-minute cameo.

I can't call you out on them, though, because you already called them 'outrageous'. Covering all bases, much?

FFS is a pretty horrible place to be on matchdays with various “lol” brigades out in force.
