The Knee Jerk – Gameweek 12

Paul Pogba’s impact on his return has been instant, both on Manchester United and on Fantasy managers.

His double-figure return from a goal and assist against Newcastle United helped spark a revived attacking performance from Jose Mourinho’s side.

He set up Anthony Martial’s equaliser and reinvigorated Romelu Lukaku to snap a seven-match drought in a United shirt.

Pogba was cited as the inspiration for United’s devastating early season form and now, with the Frenchman back in the fold, we can only hope that Mourinho’s side will rekindle their relentless goal scoring exploits of the first five Gameweeks.

There are some who required little encouragement to invest in Pogba’s influence.

Having dropped back to his initial valuation of 8.0, he is already the top transfer target in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), claiming 55,000 new owners at the time of writing.

While impressive against the Magpies, this seems classic knee-jerk material, particularly with United’s fixtures soon stiffening and managers eyeing up a potential exit for Lukaku from Gameweek 14.

Chelsea’s Alvaro Morata will doubtless be the target as the striker’s replacement, with Spaniard doing little to put that trade in jeopardy with today’s performance at West Brom.

His eighth goal of the season, and fifth on his travels, took him to the top of the FPL forward standings.

Indeed, United’s rebirth as an attacking force coincided with another convincing display from Chelsea in which Morata and, in particular, Eden Hazard again sparkled.

Pushed up in a central role in tandem with the striker, the Belgian is beginning to convince as a midfield heavy-hitter.

But unlike Morata, Hazard remains on the periphery of our thinking.

Part of just 5% of squads, his net ownership actually dropped ahead of today’s 18-point haul as he struggles to convince managers to make him part of their plans.

Even now, hours after his Hawthorns performance, Pogba, Leroy Sane and Mohamed Salah are all enjoying greater transfer traffic than a player who amassed 224 points last season – Hazard’s third tally over 200 points in his five-season FPL career.

Maybe our standards and expectations have altered.

While Morata can be eased into our line-ups in a swap for one of the rotating Man City strikers or a stuttering Harry Kane and Lukaku, Hazard requires major surgery in an area of our squads well served by cheaper and more consistent performers.

The aforementioned Salah continues to run riot, producing 16 points to top the overall standings. Sane, meanwhile, kept ticking over with an assist in Man City’s victory at the King Power Stadium.

Pogba has rapidly rejoined this contingent of midfielders threatening to better the likes of Hazard and certainly Alexis Sanchez, as our perception of what constitutes a midfield heavy-hitter is challenged.

I don’t doubt that Hazard will have more to say on this but, for now, it’s Pogba’s potential that has convinced Fantasy managers to act.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

For GW12 I had a -16 hit to make up, and I feel I have half dodged a bullet, as I saved using my Free Hit chip (so I can use on more profitable BGW/DGW). Have 40 points (56-16) even with a Kane(c) fail, and Kun upfront. Have Richarlison + Duffy left to play. if i can break 50 after 16 pt deduction I will class that a success.....

Thanks Hashattack for your support. I'am a serious player, i just had used my WC and had loads of injuries to deal with. 3 of my hits were Morata, Sane and Surman so got a few attacking returns from them. If i hadnt changed Salah C to Kane C in last 5 mins i would have had 15 more points (which would have nearly wiped out the -16 itself). I managed to get 110K last year at the end so I'm aiming for higher this year.

Last year on the last DGW i did a -16 hit to do bench boost and fill my squad with players with 2 games.... and got 167 after the deduction! Taking hits can pay off see 🙂

Wildcard score of 64 with Richarlison to come. Up to 100,055 overall.

Highlights - Alonso, Mee, Moreno, Salah, Morata

Lowlights - DeGea, Francis, Sterling and Niasse 10 points first on bench.

Think I'll stick with team for one more week.

heading that way with Niasse and Wilson ... so much easier to pick the fittest, most in-form striker as opposed to trying juggle 3 premiums

As we know the best formation is always the one that has the highest scoring players from the previous week. This week 4-5-1 becomes the hot topic. Next week it'll be something else.

Morata is my only forward I consider worthy of his price. Tempted to sell Kane for Wilson. This would allow 5 strong mids, a decent defence and I could rotate between 3-5-2 and 4-5-1. Crazy thinking?

Yep, can't argue with that. I thought I'd monitor him today rather than take a -4 to do DCL > Wilson, but he want Batshuayi on us!

If I sit on my hands too long then Bournemouth's nice fixtures will be over.

Vardy + 4.4m to Niasse + Pogba (for a hit?)

I know it's tough to hold, but Vardy has some very nice fixtures now.

They do look decent moves though.

After the Mee debacle I don't trust Salah and Morata not to rise. Ironically if Mee hadn't risen it wouldn't be an issue but this is the only night I can definitely afford to get both of them in.

Then get them, these will be longterm moves.

        I did it!

Loftus-Cheek the enabler, was looking at getting him in ahead of this weekend anyway but had other issues.

Asked this yesterday, why on earth has Chris Coleman agreed to go to Sunderland. So many premier league teams could have a job for him in a month.

Yeah, I don't get that at all. He's good enough to manage in the Prem.

I hope he's been promised some money to spend in January.

similar question on Moyes, why go to West Ham, considering they have the hardest next 6 fixtures from most of the teams in the drop zone.

Either he is deluded or just money greedy.

Eh, Moyes doesn't have a choice I'm afraid. He's career and reputation have been proper ruined and this is possibly his last job in the premier league if he doesn't improve results. Being out of work and basically no one trusting him, this was a win-win.

Davies owners, are you selling ?

My purchase was 5.6, so will lose profit

Had the same dilemma going into this GW so I sold for Daniels. Recommend doing that, or going for Mustafi at 5.3m.

I sold for Mee before today and it paid off, sensible to get rid especially if it frees up funds.

I sold yesterday. If Rose is injured, then i'd hold especially with those kind Spurs fixtures.

Played Otamendi, so guaranteed autosub. Spreads the points out over the weekend. No real point though
