The Knee Jerk – Gameweek 12

Paul Pogba’s impact on his return has been instant, both on Manchester United and on Fantasy managers.

His double-figure return from a goal and assist against Newcastle United helped spark a revived attacking performance from Jose Mourinho’s side.

He set up Anthony Martial’s equaliser and reinvigorated Romelu Lukaku to snap a seven-match drought in a United shirt.

Pogba was cited as the inspiration for United’s devastating early season form and now, with the Frenchman back in the fold, we can only hope that Mourinho’s side will rekindle their relentless goal scoring exploits of the first five Gameweeks.

There are some who required little encouragement to invest in Pogba’s influence.

Having dropped back to his initial valuation of 8.0, he is already the top transfer target in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), claiming 55,000 new owners at the time of writing.

While impressive against the Magpies, this seems classic knee-jerk material, particularly with United’s fixtures soon stiffening and managers eyeing up a potential exit for Lukaku from Gameweek 14.

Chelsea’s Alvaro Morata will doubtless be the target as the striker’s replacement, with Spaniard doing little to put that trade in jeopardy with today’s performance at West Brom.

His eighth goal of the season, and fifth on his travels, took him to the top of the FPL forward standings.

Indeed, United’s rebirth as an attacking force coincided with another convincing display from Chelsea in which Morata and, in particular, Eden Hazard again sparkled.

Pushed up in a central role in tandem with the striker, the Belgian is beginning to convince as a midfield heavy-hitter.

But unlike Morata, Hazard remains on the periphery of our thinking.

Part of just 5% of squads, his net ownership actually dropped ahead of today’s 18-point haul as he struggles to convince managers to make him part of their plans.

Even now, hours after his Hawthorns performance, Pogba, Leroy Sane and Mohamed Salah are all enjoying greater transfer traffic than a player who amassed 224 points last season – Hazard’s third tally over 200 points in his five-season FPL career.

Maybe our standards and expectations have altered.

While Morata can be eased into our line-ups in a swap for one of the rotating Man City strikers or a stuttering Harry Kane and Lukaku, Hazard requires major surgery in an area of our squads well served by cheaper and more consistent performers.

The aforementioned Salah continues to run riot, producing 16 points to top the overall standings. Sane, meanwhile, kept ticking over with an assist in Man City’s victory at the King Power Stadium.

Pogba has rapidly rejoined this contingent of midfielders threatening to better the likes of Hazard and certainly Alexis Sanchez, as our perception of what constitutes a midfield heavy-hitter is challenged.

I don’t doubt that Hazard will have more to say on this but, for now, it’s Pogba’s potential that has convinced Fantasy managers to act.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

If there is any trend in Peps selection it is that Jesus plays 90 or gets a lot of minutes away and drastically reduced minutes at home. Holding for another week at least.

This. The only away game that Aguero was inexplicably benched for was Bournemouth in GW3. For all the others he's either just had a car crash, fainted in the dressing room or played 120 minutes midweek!

No, at the beginning of the season, only really him and Mkhi were particularly viable 8 mil ish options. There's lots of good value around there now.

That said, I'm keeping close tabs on him so he doesn't get out of my price range in a few weeks time, in the same way that many have been burnt by Sanés price jump

    The "Unofficial" Protection Rule

Players changing status from "red flag 0%" to 100% available receive 8 days price protection where transfers don't change their chance of changing price. When the 8 days is over, they start from 0%.

Currently Otamendi and Pogba fit this situation.

Price rises mainly. They get "some protection" from dropping with flags so it's to make price changes slower.

I can see why this should apply if a player is falling but in the case where they will rise like Pogba should this not apply?

So you owned Pogba when he starting losing ownership and value. You lost value be it at a reduced rate while red flagged but now can't get the benefit of what would be a probably double rise.

Even if Richarlison hauls tomorrow, I'm thinking of Rich, Tammy > Pogba, Niasse. Is that worth a hit, though? It's the only way I can bring in Pogba. And if I don't act soon, Niasse has the potential of rising (right?), then I'm SOL.

A back spasm is the involuntary contraction or tensing of the muscles in the lower back. The condition ranges from infrequent and mild discomfort to severe pain that makes it difficult to move. Back spasms can typically be treated effectively without surgery.

So I'm reasonably happy with my team but this captaincy is doing my head in. I refused to captain Hazard because he's trolled me too many times in the past, and for some reason I ignored Salah, and stuck with Kane. I would've had an absolutely massive score had I nailed it.

I'm not even sure what to do going forward - again I won't captain Liverpool or Chelsea players are they're playing each other, Pep's rotation prevents me from captaining Jesus or Sterling at Huddersfield, which leaves me... Kane again. That cliche about the definition of madness is appropriate here.

Yep, I had Salah VC the past 2 weeks as well. I know we shouldn't dwell on what could've happened but knowing I would've been 28 points better off just from swapping them around hurts.

I'm going to captain Kane. Captaincy is hard this season. I've hardly had a good pick but teams seems to be doing OK.

My solution to C option is that from now on I captain Sane or Morata. I ain't got the "big hitters" anymore just the one who have a steady stream of points mixed with hauls - reliable captains.

      1. Pierce34
        • 8 Years
        6 years, 5 months ago

Yeah for some reason I'd feel a lot more comfortable captaining Morata than Hazard. Maybe a sign I should swap them, despite Hazard's haul.

It's especially annoying because I nailed captaincy so consistently last year. For most of the season, Sanchez away to anyone outside the top 4 was guaranteed points practically.

Don't know man, very good chance I will need Knockaert/RLC most of the games, Knockaert had some great xG and xA lately. Do rate the defensive moves of B over those in A but really fancy Knockaert actually.

Great week for you btw, nice punt on Pogba, didn't expect that at all. As you saw, horrible week for me, remember when we were only a couple of points away from each other for 5 weeks in a row or so, that time is over now I guess haha

          • 8 Years
          6 years, 5 months ago

The big question is... will Speroni keep his place? I guess only time will tell. 😉

Thanks, and it's interesting that you bring it up (the Pogba punt) - in your case B might sound like the safer bet but if your gut is telling you to go with Knockaert, stick with it. I had a look at our league table and the gap between 1st/2nd and 2nd/3rd really is growing. However, I am sure you guys will catch us up soon, just a matter of weeks.

With Salah and the MC mids being considerably cheaper (and Pogback there as well) and the forwards all producing on-and-off, but so far OK, I think it's more of a structural question - If you have him, you'll have to drop a forward and restructure your team (I'm against that). Otherwise there's cheaper options in the midfield, that'll be better value that the Belgian. Just my opinion
