The Knee Jerk – Gameweek 12

Paul Pogba’s impact on his return has been instant, both on Manchester United and on Fantasy managers.

His double-figure return from a goal and assist against Newcastle United helped spark a revived attacking performance from Jose Mourinho’s side.

He set up Anthony Martial’s equaliser and reinvigorated Romelu Lukaku to snap a seven-match drought in a United shirt.

Pogba was cited as the inspiration for United’s devastating early season form and now, with the Frenchman back in the fold, we can only hope that Mourinho’s side will rekindle their relentless goal scoring exploits of the first five Gameweeks.

There are some who required little encouragement to invest in Pogba’s influence.

Having dropped back to his initial valuation of 8.0, he is already the top transfer target in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), claiming 55,000 new owners at the time of writing.

While impressive against the Magpies, this seems classic knee-jerk material, particularly with United’s fixtures soon stiffening and managers eyeing up a potential exit for Lukaku from Gameweek 14.

Chelsea’s Alvaro Morata will doubtless be the target as the striker’s replacement, with Spaniard doing little to put that trade in jeopardy with today’s performance at West Brom.

His eighth goal of the season, and fifth on his travels, took him to the top of the FPL forward standings.

Indeed, United’s rebirth as an attacking force coincided with another convincing display from Chelsea in which Morata and, in particular, Eden Hazard again sparkled.

Pushed up in a central role in tandem with the striker, the Belgian is beginning to convince as a midfield heavy-hitter.

But unlike Morata, Hazard remains on the periphery of our thinking.

Part of just 5% of squads, his net ownership actually dropped ahead of today’s 18-point haul as he struggles to convince managers to make him part of their plans.

Even now, hours after his Hawthorns performance, Pogba, Leroy Sane and Mohamed Salah are all enjoying greater transfer traffic than a player who amassed 224 points last season – Hazard’s third tally over 200 points in his five-season FPL career.

Maybe our standards and expectations have altered.

While Morata can be eased into our line-ups in a swap for one of the rotating Man City strikers or a stuttering Harry Kane and Lukaku, Hazard requires major surgery in an area of our squads well served by cheaper and more consistent performers.

The aforementioned Salah continues to run riot, producing 16 points to top the overall standings. Sane, meanwhile, kept ticking over with an assist in Man City’s victory at the King Power Stadium.

Pogba has rapidly rejoined this contingent of midfielders threatening to better the likes of Hazard and certainly Alexis Sanchez, as our perception of what constitutes a midfield heavy-hitter is challenged.

I don’t doubt that Hazard will have more to say on this but, for now, it’s Pogba’s potential that has convinced Fantasy managers to act.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Thoughts on what to do with this lot? Madness to consider Sterling to Pogba?

    Elliot
    Jones, Kiko, Fernandez
    Salah, Sterling, Zaha, Chupo
    Aguero, Kane, Lukaku

Pope, Mee, Carroll, Mbemba 0itb 1ft

Vardy to Niasse and Eriksen to Hazard /Pogba (-4)?

Sane move? This gives funds to upgrade TC in the near future.

    Time to go 3-5-2

To add on to my previous comment on captain fails, I really prefer a more hands-on system like the one at Fantasy UCL, where you can manually change your captain to someone who hasn't played yet in the same gameweek.

This (C) and (VC) thing sometimes relies too much on chance in a game that's already a lot about chance.

Of course if I had been nailing my captain call maybe I wouldn't be writing this 😛 But I really do prefer the UCL system.

        😆

Do you honestly prefer the FPL system to the UCL one? If so, why?

The calls would largely be the same anyway - I would've still captained Kane, the only options for switching would've been Richarlison tomorrow or Choupo-Moting/Dunk on Monday.

I like the system for captains as it is. If Kane was playing tomorrow would you switch it to him from lets say Lukaku for example..?

No, I would stick to Lukaku. In UCL if my captain scores on the first day I don't switch on the second day, so I'd probably do the same in FPL.

Also calls like that is an additional thing that would separate managers, as TM's answer shows compared to mine. I like it when different strategies come into play.

Would make FPL totally different if it was and the casuals would have next to no chance of a good rank. Easier to just can the captaincy if that's your biggest gripe.

Yeah I do get it about the casuals, as I said below. I think I do prefer having captains overall to no captains (though it's close), but I would much prefer the proactive system overall.

I tend to agree with you. A more proactive game is always more fun to play than a game where you just pick your team once and wait for the gameweek to get over.

Yeah. I mean, I get it as it's simpler this way and easier for the massive number of players. But as I said there's enough luck involve otherwise so reducing the element of luck in the captain calls wouldn't be a bad idea.

Oh no, I get that. I just don't get why he'd do that with a really good captaincy/vice-captaincy candidate, rather than someone like Richarlison or Vardy or something. Suggests Salah wasn't even in his consideration leading up to captaincy choice.

Would somebody care to explain how Pope manages to get 2 BPS? i just don't understand how that is possible when he made a single save for the entire game. Surely the defenders who were actually involved in terms of tackles, clearances etc. should be getting them for actually making a contribution

Weird feeling. I only have 8 players this gmw With Richarlison left, -8p hit. 53p, Salah(C) saved my ass. It was all about damage Control this week, it could have been much much worse

How did you manage to take a 8 point hit and all get 8 out.
Really early transfers or what? - that takes some doing.
You dodged a bullet this week. Well done on the C choice.

Man I dont know either I had problems in my team. Jones, Otamendi, Foster, Bertrand, Ritchie, Chalobah, Mbemba, Aguero(benched), Carroll(benched.

Decided to stick With Jones, Otamendi. Transfered Foster, Bertrand, Ritchie, but still ended up With 8 players crazy.

If not of Salah I could easily have lost 40-50 Points to people

I have the magical 5.5 trio of Jones Stones VVD

How would you play this with one FT?

I'm thinking of keeping VVD and Jones, doing Stones to a 4.3 and upgrade Ladapo to Wilson.

    Thoughts on this lot?

    Hazard Sterling Salah Choupo Richarlison
    Kane Firmino 4.5

    Defence is perfectly fine!

    1 FT 0.1 itb

    Thinking of Salah> Sane
    Firmino > Morata(Next week)

City have 3 very good fixtures compared to Pool(CHE,stk, bha)

    Thoughts??

I had a good haul this week but feel like going to be left out if I don't WC my team. I have 2 FT atm.

    My current lineup.
    Elliot, Hart
    Otamendi, Jones, Mee, Ake, Mbemba
    Salah, Sanchez, Fabregas, Gross, Carroll
    Kane, Jesus, Abraham

    Planned WC team.
    Elliot, Hart
    Otamendi, Jones, Mee, Daniels, Klavan
    Salah, Hazard, Pogba, Gross, RLC
    Kane, Aguero, Niasse

I wish i could change Hart to Pope but couldn't free up the money. Hazard is on the rise and I couldn't leave him out. Jesus needs to go but without City coverage you are destined to doom. Is this a worthy WC team? Any thought?

Got one of the best pokerplayers in Norway in my ML. His history in FPL:

    Season- Place
    12/13- 341
    13/14- 30484
    14/15- 8925
    15/16- 1464
    16/17- 540

And he just passed med now after a slow start....it will be tough to beat him

Be interesting to see how Kane fares in the captain poll, West Brom are there for the taking but there's an argument to be made for looking elsewhere

Yes, and it's an interesting problem. I don't know where I'll deploy the armband yet, but I'm glad we're actually having to think hard about the captaincy each week.

It's on Kane atm, Sané and Kaku are my other options but I feel Kane is the most explosive so may just leave it on him cause I'll be kicking myself if I miss his haul.

Over the next 3 fixtures though, he really needs to prove his worth cause with Moratas fixtures and United facing Bournemouth in GW16, he could become excess baggage. Captain regardless for the next 3 and re assess after that
