Scout Notes – Gameweek 12 – Sunday

Richarlison ends his Vicarage Road goal drought as Will Hughes catches the eye against West Ham. Elsewhere, the heroics of Heurelho Gomes helps the Hornets to a rare clean sheet as David Moyes’ tenure at West Ham begins with defeat.

Richarlison ends home drought

Such a reliable source of goals and Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points on his travels, Richarlison finally found the net at home after failing to produce a single effort on target in his previous five at Vicarage Road.

Owned by 18%, the young Brazilian’s home output was of particular concern bearing in mind that his next two visitors are Manchester United and Spurs in Gameweek 14-15.

Yet Sunday’s strike maintained a remarkable run of consistency – he’s now delivered attacking points in six of the last seven Gameweeks ahead of next weekend’s trip to Newcastle United.

Heightening his appeal for that Magpies clash is that, away from home, Richarlison has averaged 7.2 points per match and is the league’s top player for shots inside the opposition box (20).

On the downside, he also has a testing trip to Burnley directly after those United and Spurs matches. But the case for holding is very convincing, with the fixtures turning in his favour from Gameweek 17 once again.

At a price of 6.5, Richarlison is now the top FPL midfielder for value in terms of points per million and sits fifth in the midfield standings on 66 points.

Despite that, his inability to claim bonus points continues to dent the South American’s captaincy potential. He has scored or assisted in eight of the first 12 Gameweeks but has earned bonus points on just two occasions.

Today’s BPS haul was limited by two shots off target and two fouls conceded, while he was also tackled twice.

Hughes impresses in tactical tweak

Handed a central support role alongside Richarlison as Marco Silva moved to 3-4-2-1 against the Hammers, Will Hughes overshadowed his more popular team-mate thanks to a goal, assist and maximum bonus.

But Watford’s form on the road suggests that Silva could revert to his usual 4-2-3-1 at St James’ Park – only Man City (16) and Chelsea (14) have scored more away goals than the Hornets’ 12.

Regardless of formation, Hughes (4.6) now looks likely to be on the teamsheet for the trip to Tyneside after months on the periphery.

Handed just 10 minutes in the opening 10 Gameweeks, Hughes has now started both of Watford’s last two. However, Roberto Pereyra made a return to the bench and replaced the former Derby County man late on; he will doubtless threaten Hughes’ start in weeks to come.

Andre Gray was again a starter up front as Troy Deeney served the second match in a three-match suspension. Gray’s scuffed assist for Hughes’ opener was his second in as many matches.

Gomes keeps it clean

Silva can thank Heurelho Gomes for their first clean sheet in eight attempts after he denied Cheick Kouyate and Marko Arnautovic with superb stops.

Indeed, David Moyes can at least take encouragement from the fact that his side had three big chances today – they had managed just six in their previous six road trips under Slaven Bilic.

For the hosts, the decision to bench Jose Holebas came as a surprise as Marvin Zeegelaar (4.4) earned his first outing of the season at left wing-back. Holebas had played every minute of the previous 10 matches he had been available for, only missing the Gameweek 3 encounter against Brighton due to suspension.

Ranked top for crosses (82) and successful crosses (17) among defenders, Holebas is second only to Ben Davies for key passes (15 to 22) at the back.

Watford’s primary corner taker over the first 11 (he had taken 33 of their first 50), Holebas’ absence saw Hughes also claim dead-ball duties, taking all three of Watford’s corners.

Zeegelaar impressed on his first start, picking up two bonus points on his debut having won three tackles. Kiko Femenía – our preferred option among Silva’s defence – picked up a single bonus point but hobbled off late on with a knock.

Elsewhere, Adrian Mariappa – a 4.0 option in FPL – also earned a notable recall in Silva’s three-man defence having been dropped for the previous two outings.

However, like Hughes, Mariappa will surely have strong competition for his starting role with Sebastian Prödl returning from injury to figure on the bench on Sunday. Younes Kaboul is also on the road to recovery, with Silva likely to go into the busy Christmas period with the option to rotate his centre-backs.

took a radical -12 last week, foster, eriksen, vardy, bavies out, speroni, salah, morata, Daniels in, net +17 points, quite happy with that

just annoyed at last minute I changed captain from salah to kane, grrrr lol, would have been an awesome week!

cheers pal - yeah, the consensus is always avoid hits, but I think if a strategic change will pay off over a few weeks then it's worth it, it doesn't always work out, but can add points and value, a calculated risk that paid off this week, plus hits are fun 🙂

    Currently have my WC active!!!

Here's my midfield pool. Taking budgets into consideration, which one should I ditch?

    Sane - Salah - Hazard - Pogba - Richarlison - RLC

    .
    --------------------------------------
    Backline is all below 5m
(also have Kane - Morata - Niasse)

I'm going to dump Kane for Wilson this week and then use the funds to upgrade the rest of my team. I'm sure loads of people will yell at me that I'm stupid but I'm over the whole should I, shouldn't I captain thing. Yes he will get tons of points but the swings I can't handle anymore.

same. he's gonna get a hattie in the coming games, but he just takes to much space in the team

For sure he will get a hattie somewhere and we will miss it. But not every week and he is priced like an every week hattie. I've had him since week one and honestly. I'm over it. Rather spend the money elsewhere and take my chances. At his price a blank is simply too frustrating...

I'm holding Kane, he has 2/3 gws where he blanks, then 2/3 gws where he scores braces, prefer him to Lukaku, and the city forwards are a rotation nightmare which I avoid by having better value double city mids, Kane will still have 200+ points at end of season as long as fit

Prefer him to "consistent" lukaku at 1M more

absolutely, been a big fan of lukaku over last couple of seasons, especially at more reasonable 9/10m, but feel kane will score more over the course of the season

that being said will monitor, and if lukaku shows signs of being able to score more than goal in a game he'll be in my sights, but I can get that kind of consistency from a mid at 3m less - kane is expensive but on current showings this season is more likely to explode, and that's what I want from any player over 10.5m

            1. The Overthinker
              • 7 Years
              6 years, 5 months ago

I will always prefer consistency over explosiveness .
And it's not like that lukaku will never explode, he will. So with him I am getting consistency as well as a chance of brace every week at 1M less than Kane.

This season this has not been the case with Kane until now. He doesn't looks like self. How many times will you burn yourself by captaining him? He has blanks in 8 gw out of 12. That's really poor and definitely not worth 12.8.

If you aren't gonna captain him, then why even own him?

Same , frustrated about his returns but I'm keeping for 2-3 good weeks giving him a chance but after that if he doesn't perform then surely I'll ship him.

But problem is who to get as a replacement, kaku has been poor,Aguero is rotated

Tricky one really. You probably need to WC because of the fixtures in your defense this week. Vardy isn't a problem against West Ham. GroB Carroll Mbemba and maybe DDG could go but it's probably better to WC GW14 when the path to christmas fixtures with Chelsea etc is all clear. You can get Hazard Sane in, get rid of Lukaku Vardy etc.

Yeah, triple Chelsea is what you are going to live and die with. Tying up nearly 28 mil on players in one side is risky, but I get why you would do it. I guess your best Salah option is to downgrade Alonso and upgrade one of your city mids at some point. Good luck.

            • 14 Years
            6 years, 5 months ago

I'm trying to look at players coldly and ask myself if they offer the best value at that price point. For the mids, i'd only be interested in Hazard, Salah, Coutinho, Sané, Sterling, Pogba, Ramsey, Richarlison, for example.

Given how the last 2 weeks have gone, Salah should be more critical than Kane, but the Chelsea fixture gives me a moment's pause. If I continue to lose ground to Salah teams then I'll need to make a tough decision.

            Thanks, and to you!

I tend to look at players the same way and consider their value in a vacuum. In your case, i think Alonso is the hard one to justify - despite the goal this week. Could you replace him with someone a million cheaper to facilitate a Sterling to Salah move? I think so. But, again, i get why you've done what you've done. It's a solid side for now.

I came to the conclusion that Aguero & Jesus are too expensive for the risk of Peptation.
Silva & KdB safer, Sane & Sterling more explosive but at those prices I could swallow it easier.
If Haz, Sanchez, Pogs, Alli. Eriksen and the Liverpool guys all start to motor then I might have to consider ditching all Citeh assets to follow the relative safety of these guys.
Don't like the idea but I'm considering it.

Ha that 1 forward is hilarious.
I like the Azpi and Alonso double up myself
Midfield is nice but too much money invested there are better cheaper option especially KDB

And with only 5 goals at home against Burnley Swansea Palace Bournemouth and Chelsea, the output just isn't there when you Pool, City, United, Chelsea and Arsenal all capable of scouting well at home
