Captains

Captain Poll – Gameweek 13

Preparations for Gameweek 13 get underway this morning with the launch of our Captain Poll to canvass your views on the armband options.

Those Fantasy managers who have captained Harry Kane (12.8) for his “kind” fixtures at Wembley Stadium will have their resolve tested once again when West Brom drop by Spurs’ temporary home.

Kane has failed to find the net against Crystal Palace, Bournemouth, Swansea City and Burnley – all sides that, like the Baggies, have been happy to concede possession and soak up pressure on the road.

Yet West Brom’s recent record bodes well for Kane, who was handed the armband by 17.2% of Fantasy Premier League managers for the 2-0 North London Derby defeat by Arsenal.

The visitors have one clean sheet in 10 and have shipped a combined seven goals against Man City and Chelsea in the last three Gameweeks.

But this morning’s departure of Tony Pulis may help address that run and afford the Baggies a new lease of life.

Sold by more than 37,000 managers this week, Kane has had more shots (37) and efforts in the box (24) than any player in front of his own fans.

Yet Kane’s five blanks in six at Wembley may well open the door for Romelu Lukaku (11.7) to top the poll for the second Gameweek running and the 11th time in 13 Gameweeks.

The forward ended a seven-match goal drought for Manchester United with a strike in the 4-1 victory over Newcastle.

This weekend he faces another potentially favourable home clash, against Brighton. But with just six goals conceded and three clean sheets on the road, the Seagulls may still limit the Belgian’s potential.

Lukaku still builds a strong case – no player has scored more times at home (five) than the Belgian, who also leads the way for big chances (nine).

Paul Pogba’s (8.0) return helps to boost Lukaku’s stock, though he himself could also challenge for the summit after returning from injury to deliver a goal and an assist against Newcastle.

With three goals and four assists from five league starts, the Frenchman is already the most bought player for Gameweek 13, picking up more than 171,000 new owners.

Once again, rotation fears look set to limit the potential of Manchester City’s key targets, despite a favourable trip to a Huddersfield Town side that has conceded 14 times in their last six, including a 4-0 loss to Spurs at the John Smith’s Stadium in Gameweek 7.

However, second guessing their teamsheet may be a little simpler this weekend after Pep Guardiola admitted he will “change the team completely” for City’s Champions League encounter with Feyenoord on Tuesday in order to cope with the demanding schedule.

This indicates that Sergio Aguero (11.7), who was an unused substitute for City’s 2-0 away victory over Leicester City at the weekend, could be in line to start in midweek and potentially miss out in the league once again. More than 68,000 FPL managers have already ushered the Argentine to the exit this week – he’s started just one of their last five away matches in the Premier League.

Meanwhile, those listed on Pep’s teamsheet at the King Power Stadium look destined for another domestic start – if they’re overlooked on Tuesday.

Gabriel Jesus (10.5) has started every away match in the Premier League, scoring three times and assisting another, yet he has failed to produce double-figures on his travels.

Midfielders Leroy Sane (8.9), Raheem Sterling (8.1), David Silva (8.4) and Kevin De Bruyne (10.1) could easily outscore the Brazilian.

Of this quartet, Silva could be the most intriguing armband option. Away from home, he is City’s number one player for shots (17) and efforts in the box (13), and has already delivered five assists.

Elsewhere, Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah (9.6) moved to the top of the FPL standings thanks to a brace against Southampton at Anfield – his fifth double-digit points haul of the season.

The Egyptian is now the most popular midfielder in FPL – he sits in 43.8% of teams after earning 73,000 new owners this week alone. However, with a visit from a Chelsea side that has not conceded since N’Golo Kante returned from injury, Salah’s support and supply line could be restricted.

Similarly, interest in Blues’ pair Eden Hazard (10.6) and Alvaro Morata (10.5) may be muted, given that Jurgen Klopp’s troops have only conceded once in six matches at Anfield.

Both roll up to Merseyside in sensational away form, though – Hazard has 29 points in his last two, while Morata, the top player for big chances on the road (10), has blanked just once in five away trips on his way to the top of the FPL forward standings.

Watford’s Richarlison (6.5) looks a genuine alternative in the mid-price bracket for a trip to Newcastle United.

The Brazilian – whose goal against West Ham yesterday was his fifth of the campaign – boasts impressive numbers on the road. Away from home, he’s fired more shots in the box (20) than any other player and is averaging 7.2 points per appearance.

Having scored in each of his three Selhurst Park outings since returning from injury, Wilfried Zaha’s (6.8) strong home form cannot be ignored.

Stationed up front by Roy Hodgson again at the weekend, he is set to host a Stoke City side that, prior to their visit to Brighton tonight, have conceded 11 and kept just one clean sheet on their travels.

Finally, a hat-trick at home to Huddersfield at the weekend is likely to help Callum Wilson (5.9) garner votes. Acquired by over 52,000 new owners, the Bournemouth striker travels to a Swansea side that has shipped 10 and earned just one shut-out at the Liberty Stadium.

The poll is now live in the middle column on your homepage on desktop, or via the slide-in menu on mobile and tablet under Recent Comments.

Remember, we are looking for your vote for the player you think will be most effective, regardless of whether you own them or not.

We will be back to check in on progress in the poll later ahead of this Friday’s Gameweek 13 deadline when we deliver our “Captain Sensible” article offering an analysis of the results and the statistics behind the leading contenders.

Reading Pulis comments before the sacking, it didn't seem he wanted to stay and get West Brom out of trouble.

He got a good payout and knows he will be in demand next season when another club is in trouble.

He'll take a break, there's more money to be made doing what BFS does; being parachuted into a club on a short term contract to save a team from relegation. Bonus at the end too.

Sorry for the re-post but really struggling to work out what to do here...

I have a bit of a dilemma in defence and midfield and would really appreciate thoughts:

    Hart Elliot
    Stones* Jones* Mbemba* Mee Naughton
    Salah Ramsey Richarlison Sterling* Atsu*
    Morata Kane Firmino
    £1.6m ITB 1FT

I am looking at the following:
    1. Atsu to RLC
    2. Stones to Azpi
    3. Mbemba to Wimmer

Depending on UCL (i.e. Sterling's minutes), I am inclined to do Mbemba to Wimmer this week and accept Mee coming in for Jones if he is not fit for the weekend. I don't see any value in taking a hit for a defender (especially with Azpi playing Liverpool) and the hit for RLC might be wasted as he would be on my bench. I want to leave £1.2 to do Stones to Azpi next week. Is Wimmer nailed? Is there any chance of Mbemba playing?

Is this the right option, or should I bring in a Chelsea defender for Stones this week? Can afford a 0.1 drop before I lose £ on Stones

ps I know Hart isn't a great option, but he is a much lower priority for a couple of weeks while Elliot has reasonable fixtures

    1. HashAttack
      • 7 Years

Have you thought about Mariappa (WAT 4.0)
Would still swap Hart out .. Begovic has good fixtures

      1. Going Home
        • 12 Years

Is he nailed? If so, would be a great option.

Stones to Azpi next week, Atsu to RLC the following week and then Hart out when I can't get away with Elliot could work a treat

Wimmer seems pretty nailed but I'm not sure this is your priority this week. I'd have a look at doing Stones to Otamendi.

      1. Going Home
        • 12 Years
        6 years, 5 months ago

Going without City defence down the line, so it's basically a question of whether to do Stones to Azpi this week or wait until after Chelsea play Liverpool and just focus on getting XI out this week

          • 7 Years

If you're adamant on getting Chelsea defence I see your point. Mbemba's rotting on the bench so switching to Wimmer now wouldn't be a bad choice. Yedlin for Newcastle could also be and option, gets the odd assist, did really well last season (against poorer opposition though).

Yeah, it seems like a sensible move after this week with their upcoming fixtures - plus I don't see Azpi getting rotated a whole bunch even over Christmas. Will look at Yedlin over Wimmer as an option - cheers

Still think Aguero is favourite, just depends on UCL and fitness. They have played together before but I think Pep's a bit more settled on just playing one now. Keep an eye on minutes played tomorrow night in UCL.

Possibly but DDG may provide more reliable cover over Christmas

ok guys urgent help needed. have gone from 100k to 800k in 2 GW's. gave myself the weekend to avoid anything too drastic but still feeling very concerned. i know the players I want to get in over the next few GW's but injuries are killing me. any thoughts on what to prioritise? Salah is a must but selling Eriksen ahead of WBA when Liverpool have Chelsea seems so wrong...

    Foster Elliot
    Kolasinac Stones(!) Jones(!) Daniels Hunemeier
    Eriksen Sterling Silva Gross Carroll
    Lukaku Kane Abraham(!)

    thoughts?

totally agree - think it will be next midweek I get him for though. WBA and hud for Spurs and City are too good to sell players ahead of. Hazard is someone I also really want but think I will struggle!

Not to be harsh but I do think there's a lot to do. Foster, Hunemeier both need to go, Stones, Jones and Tammy all injured as you've highlighted. Priority for me would be removing Stones and Tammy first. But check their injuries before doing anything. Then work out a plan of what you want to do, whether you want to go cheap to then use the extra somewhere or stick with similar prices like say Wilson and Mustafi or something like that etc.

fair points mate. Not too fussed about Foster and Hun - latter especially is my bargain basement 3rd sub and in several years of playing I've only been down to a 3rd sub on a handful of occasions. Hoping Tammy is ok so just need to sell Stones this week, then will get Salah and probably Cout / Mane in the following week

Is Oumar Niasse nailed on from this point for Everton?

Nailed enough to be a cheap sub ... I doubt if I will actually include him in my first 11

    For GW14+
    A) Pogba, Bailly, Kolasinac
    B) Hazard, Mee, Daniels

Have Moreno, Loftus and Niasse to rotate with B when necessary.

15-16 are not great time to be getting 2 united

Already have Bailly. But yeah that is exactly my concern and why I'm looking at Hazard instead. Do you think B then?

    A. Keep Vardy
    or
    B. take a hit to get Niasse and then do Carroll>Pogba?

I am keeping Vardy this week as he plays West Ham! Then probably ditching after that for Wilson.

Yeah may give him Friday and then decide - good plan. Also helps decide between Wilson and Niasse

Unsure on a couple of positions on my wildcard. Which is better?
    A) DDG, Vertongen, Moreno & Dunk

    B) Elliot, Walker, Jones & Duffy

Comes down to whether Jones is reliable enough to play consistently throughout the busy Christmas fixtures. DDG obviously is the more reliable option to cover United defence but means only 2 premium defenders. Thoughts on this?

DDG + cheap defender is a lot better than cheap goalie + Jones ... would do a)

I love the comments on the recent hot topic of Kane and him as a captain.....

"Have gone up by 1.5m in rank since i dumped Kane".

"Rose from 1,500,000 to 500,000 in the last 2 weeks without Kane".

He seems expensive when he blanks but he will haul more than most players throughout the season. I have had him since day one and am going ok at 78k OR. Great captain choice.

true that, have him since GW1 as well 😛

He's blanked in 7 of 11 games though - until he starts showing some consistency, I disagree that he's a great captain choice. So far he's been getting the odd haul but blanking most of the time.

I'm still keeping him as I fancy him to turn it around, but I can't call him a great captain choice given his history this season so far.

For the record I had Kane GW1 - GW9 so hes not the reason my OR was 1,500,000. If I kept Kane I would still be north of 1,000,000. SO he's not the reason why my OR was poor but the decision to get rid has def helped me. I am also looking at getting him back in.

How much can a players price rise in a week and when do the changes happen?

I want to get Hazard next week and I can afford Sterling > Hazard with 0.2 to spare, but worried his price will go up and I'll miss out.

0.3 but it's unlikely he'll go up much this week with Liverpool next

Save FT this week? Next week possibly looking at Carroll/Vardy > Ramsey/Wilson

    Fabianski

    Alonso – Davies – Daniels

    Salah – Silva (V) – Richarlison – RLC

    Kane (C) – Morata – Vardy

    Bench:
    Elliot; Carroll; Ward; Cresswell

Eurgh just been on gargatron to look at my captain stats
Kane is pretty much derailing my season
if I had gone for my VC over my C on just half the gws I would be in top 10k

A'noon all. I've got 2 FT's burning a hole in my pocket and no idea what to do really. 0.0 ITB

    Foster - Speroni
    Jones - Ots - Mee - Duffy - Mbemba
    Salah - Sterling - Zaha - Richarlison
    Kane - Luka - Morata

A - Downgrade Luka to Niasse and get Pogba in for Tarrol?
B - Sterling to Pogba and Luka to Jesus?
    C - Other?
