Captains

Captain Poll – Gameweek 13

Preparations for Gameweek 13 get underway this morning with the launch of our Captain Poll to canvass your views on the armband options.

Those Fantasy managers who have captained Harry Kane (12.8) for his “kind” fixtures at Wembley Stadium will have their resolve tested once again when West Brom drop by Spurs’ temporary home.

Kane has failed to find the net against Crystal Palace, Bournemouth, Swansea City and Burnley – all sides that, like the Baggies, have been happy to concede possession and soak up pressure on the road.

Yet West Brom’s recent record bodes well for Kane, who was handed the armband by 17.2% of Fantasy Premier League managers for the 2-0 North London Derby defeat by Arsenal.

The visitors have one clean sheet in 10 and have shipped a combined seven goals against Man City and Chelsea in the last three Gameweeks.

But this morning’s departure of Tony Pulis may help address that run and afford the Baggies a new lease of life.

Sold by more than 37,000 managers this week, Kane has had more shots (37) and efforts in the box (24) than any player in front of his own fans.

Yet Kane’s five blanks in six at Wembley may well open the door for Romelu Lukaku (11.7) to top the poll for the second Gameweek running and the 11th time in 13 Gameweeks.

The forward ended a seven-match goal drought for Manchester United with a strike in the 4-1 victory over Newcastle.

This weekend he faces another potentially favourable home clash, against Brighton. But with just six goals conceded and three clean sheets on the road, the Seagulls may still limit the Belgian’s potential.

Lukaku still builds a strong case – no player has scored more times at home (five) than the Belgian, who also leads the way for big chances (nine).

Paul Pogba’s (8.0) return helps to boost Lukaku’s stock, though he himself could also challenge for the summit after returning from injury to deliver a goal and an assist against Newcastle.

With three goals and four assists from five league starts, the Frenchman is already the most bought player for Gameweek 13, picking up more than 171,000 new owners.

Once again, rotation fears look set to limit the potential of Manchester City’s key targets, despite a favourable trip to a Huddersfield Town side that has conceded 14 times in their last six, including a 4-0 loss to Spurs at the John Smith’s Stadium in Gameweek 7.

However, second guessing their teamsheet may be a little simpler this weekend after Pep Guardiola admitted he will “change the team completely” for City’s Champions League encounter with Feyenoord on Tuesday in order to cope with the demanding schedule.

This indicates that Sergio Aguero (11.7), who was an unused substitute for City’s 2-0 away victory over Leicester City at the weekend, could be in line to start in midweek and potentially miss out in the league once again. More than 68,000 FPL managers have already ushered the Argentine to the exit this week – he’s started just one of their last five away matches in the Premier League.

Meanwhile, those listed on Pep’s teamsheet at the King Power Stadium look destined for another domestic start – if they’re overlooked on Tuesday.

Gabriel Jesus (10.5) has started every away match in the Premier League, scoring three times and assisting another, yet he has failed to produce double-figures on his travels.

Midfielders Leroy Sane (8.9), Raheem Sterling (8.1), David Silva (8.4) and Kevin De Bruyne (10.1) could easily outscore the Brazilian.

Of this quartet, Silva could be the most intriguing armband option. Away from home, he is City’s number one player for shots (17) and efforts in the box (13), and has already delivered five assists.

Elsewhere, Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah (9.6) moved to the top of the FPL standings thanks to a brace against Southampton at Anfield – his fifth double-digit points haul of the season.

The Egyptian is now the most popular midfielder in FPL – he sits in 43.8% of teams after earning 73,000 new owners this week alone. However, with a visit from a Chelsea side that has not conceded since N’Golo Kante returned from injury, Salah’s support and supply line could be restricted.

Similarly, interest in Blues’ pair Eden Hazard (10.6) and Alvaro Morata (10.5) may be muted, given that Jurgen Klopp’s troops have only conceded once in six matches at Anfield.

Both roll up to Merseyside in sensational away form, though – Hazard has 29 points in his last two, while Morata, the top player for big chances on the road (10), has blanked just once in five away trips on his way to the top of the FPL forward standings.

Watford’s Richarlison (6.5) looks a genuine alternative in the mid-price bracket for a trip to Newcastle United.

The Brazilian – whose goal against West Ham yesterday was his fifth of the campaign – boasts impressive numbers on the road. Away from home, he’s fired more shots in the box (20) than any other player and is averaging 7.2 points per appearance.

Having scored in each of his three Selhurst Park outings since returning from injury, Wilfried Zaha’s (6.8) strong home form cannot be ignored.

Stationed up front by Roy Hodgson again at the weekend, he is set to host a Stoke City side that, prior to their visit to Brighton tonight, have conceded 11 and kept just one clean sheet on their travels.

Finally, a hat-trick at home to Huddersfield at the weekend is likely to help Callum Wilson (5.9) garner votes. Acquired by over 52,000 new owners, the Bournemouth striker travels to a Swansea side that has shipped 10 and earned just one shut-out at the Liberty Stadium.

The poll is now live in the middle column on your homepage on desktop, or via the slide-in menu on mobile and tablet under Recent Comments.

Remember, we are looking for your vote for the player you think will be most effective, regardless of whether you own them or not.

We will be back to check in on progress in the poll later ahead of this Friday’s Gameweek 13 deadline when we deliver our “Captain Sensible” article offering an analysis of the results and the statistics behind the leading contenders.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Is Kane playing for his future in your team this weekend when West Brom visit Wembley.

With blanks at home to Crystal Palace, Bournemouth, Swansea City and Burnley and a failure to score against Arsenal for the first time in the league is the Spurs man now too unpredictable for the armband?

In addition, is his 12.8 price tag simply too much with Morata and Lukaku vying for a place in our sides and the likes of Hazard, Salah and the City midfield all demanding our attention.

Could the Kane firesale be one of the biggest in FPL history if he blanks again against 'easy' opposition at Wembley.

It's no longer as scary as it used to be. I sold kane before his Liverpool haul and went with a front 3 of Jesus, Morata and Vardy. I always tried to save 2 FT for Jesus, Vardy to Kane, Niasse.
Now, I'm no longer sure I want him so urgently. Hazard is looking really good and my priorities may have shifted.

Oh and btw speaking as someone who had him from GW1 to GW9 (or GW10 I forget which), there is no fear factor for me. Got rid as I thought his previous blanks against weaker teams at home was enough for me. At the price of £12.8m the returns from his captaincy have been, well, uninspiring to say the least. Think I managed to get one of his braces but that doesn't make up for the other 4 times he was captained and returned nothing...

I am selling this week to get a 5 man midfield with Salah, Hazard, City mids, Pogba etc.

I'm not going to captain Kane so there isn't any point having him at 12.8mil. I'm happy knowing that people who do have him have a much weaker midfield/defence than I do, so his potential "points" should be covered. Until then I'll (hopefully)be shooting past people who are still holding on to him.

The thing is there really aren't many other Premiums firing at the moment either - this makes it even harder for me to get rid, plus his fixtures do look rather 'good' (even though he's an anti-troll) and he is nailed to start most over the busy Xmas fixture list whereas the likes of Kun, Jesus et al. are 50/50 gambles each week.

Therefore I feel a Kane, Morata and cheapie is the optimum frontline. One argument would be to switch Kane to Lukaku and bank the 1 mil, but I really don't have much faith in Lukaku either tbh, he just doesn't pass the eye test for me even though he keeps ticking over with a goal or assist. With Pogba back this could change and Kane to Lukaku could well be a good move

TLDR I still think I'm keeping Kane through xmas

I just can’t do it even if he blanks this weekend. He will go through a run where he scores 8 in 6 straight after everyone dumps him and then everyone will want him back.

He’s too explosive for me. He always bangs them in at Christmas every season and pochettino knows his team can’t afford to drop anymore points.

As an owner, this is his last chance for me. Especially against a clueless West Brom. Even one goal won’t be enough, he has to get a brace or goal and assist.

He’s just too expensive not to be returning double digit scores at home against weak opposition.

Many of you guys are basing his expected points using last season as a basis. Could we say that this season will be different? Spurs don't look like a strong team like last season - they are still dependent on Eriksen (form waning) and Alli (who has been crap all season). In addition, it seems like Pochettino is tinkering too much with the team - the rotating wingback sometimes adds a degree of confusion.

In most matches where Kane blanks, it's mostly teams who have parked the bus and Spurs have no invention to unlock the opposition's defence. Pochettino doesn't have a player who changes games - there's no plan B when they are stuck.

Pep said that Spurs is a Kane team and that still holds true. If Kane blanks then most likely Spurs will falter that game.

I think recency bias is clouding your thoughts. I don't see anything to suggest that Spurs are a worse team this season than season's past when Kane has flourished. They have had a few poor recent results, having been beaten by the big sides which they had succeeded against last season, that's true. But they've also topped (basically) their tough champions league group, beaten Real Madrid 3-1, and are still in the top 4 competing just like previous seasons.

I’ll captain him and keep him even if he blanks. There’s no compelling case to remove him. He’s scored 25-29 goals three seasons running and there’s no reason he won’t do that again. Fixtures are good, stats are good, on pens, nailed, explosive.

It’s a different situation to say Aguero (who I won’t touch) who is sharing minutes.

      Kane firmly in my team

    17. Geordienufc1

He'll be remaining in my team.

      1. He has the fixtures
      2. He has the pedigree over a number of seasons (golden boot winner 2 years in a row let's not forget) to make them count.
      3. Despite a few goalless performances, and frustrating blanks, he's still got 4 braces this season, which is no accident.
      4. He is as close to nailed on as anyone over this ridiculously busy Xmas period, which is a blessing in itself.
      5. I don't see any premium alternatives which I would prefer. I'll have Morata by next week, Lukaku is very ditchable and is hardly setting the world on fire, and the remainder of the premiums are either carry too great a rotation risk (Jesus, Aguero), or not enough goal threat/indifferent fixtures (Lacazette).

arguable that none of the premium strikers are reliable enough to replace Kane's potential atm. If Aguero was a guaranteed starter then it could be different. What is 4/5 GWs since one of the premium strikers had even a double? I think Kane is the most recent to have a double figure FPL score - liverpool game.

At 12.8m there is definitely a strong case for using the funds to load the midfield and go 3-5-2.

Still his fixtures are scary - 1 big game in next 11 GWs.

Maybe if you can get him back in with just 2 transfers it's not so bad.

He’s on thin ice. But he has two good away fixtures coming up after this one, and we know what he can do.

Without him, I could have Lukaku, Morata and also Hazard alongside Salah and Sané (or Sterling). Two £10m+ strikers, plus one £10m and two £9m+ mids could now work, with the emergence of Sané, Salah, Coutinho, Hazard and even Eriksen to choose from.

I see a lot of parallels with Morata and his injury.

Morata pulled his hamstring and took 3 or 4 weeks after the injury date to be back to "full fitness", which I would say is the game he played against Man Utd.

Its been about 4 weeks since Kane injured his against Liverpool, so I'd say he's nearing the point at which he will be fully fit again. That, combined with fixtures against a rudderless WBA, and away games where we know he prospers more (Leicester, Watford), means he stays in my team for now.

Of course his injury may be worse than Morata's was, or he may have relapsed, but we don't know that and I'm not a physio, so all I can go on is my intuition lol.

The away game against Watford in gameweek 15 is surely a good fixture for Kane, but Leicester has been strong defensively lately.

Leicester have conceded 8 in 6 home games, which is a decent record. Spurs scored 12 in 6 away games. So Spurs to score 1 or 2 the likely outcome.

will also depend on the form of spurs going into that game of course. Alli and Kane both coming back from injury and off form at present. Maybe in 2 weeks time that will be different

      Not for me.

I think his essentialness is at best overstated, but from my own painful experience I just can't.

I've hokey-cokied him twice this season after blanks and poor performances, and he's punished me twice with a 13 and 16 point haul.

After WBA (which he could easily haul in) he has Leicester and Watford away. Those games are classic Kane territory where I will be looking to captain, he got 6 goals across those two games last season.

He did similar things to us last season, Hull and Burnley the so called 'easy fixtures' he blanked in. The 2 goals and assist at Watford changed his fortunes, two games later he got a hat-trick vs WBA.

It's only going to take another brace and those who ditched him for Niasse or Abraham will be scrambling to perform major surgery to get him back in before his price takes off again.

Good grief that’s all a bit dramatic 😉 - players can not score every game and Kane is still the joint second highest overall goal scorer and joint first forward goal scorer - everyone just need to be patient, stick with your big hitter and it will all even out over the season.

The other option is to try to play the ‘chop and change’ game chasing the points each week by doing the Hokey Cokey with the big hitters, big rewards but you risk missing out on a haul from the likes of Kane ... oh and Dembele is back 🙂

I'm not sure Kane should even have been in the squad for this past gameweek, he clearly isn't 100% at the moment.

I really want Hazard for gw14 onwards, if Kane does blank against West Brom, it will make replacing him a lot more palatable. My plan is to save a transfer this week, then bring Wilson in for Kane, freeing up funds to upgrade Ritchie to Hazard. I will probably also take a hit to upgrade Carroll to Pogba.

Yes. For me, and I have him since they 1, it is a testing week. Having the worst value of the Premium forwards (except Lacazette), I will captain him and if he blanks it will be the end.

The fact i'm not sure whether to captain him at home to a west brom team managed by Gary Megson tells me it may be time to move on. Lukaku, Salah and Hazard/Morata offer good capaincy options in the coming weeks. Could gain ground, or could be a season ending mistake!

Will captain this week as I don't have Lukaku, whilst dealing with Davies for Vertonghen. Next week Morata is coming in for Firmino but I might just be tempted to free up 2.0m rather than spending 2.0m by switching Kane out.

The trouble with going Kane-less is fitting in Spurs attacking cover with a mid of Salah, Silva, Sterling, Gross which I'm quite happy with...?

No, he's not playing for his future.

Will keep him even if he blanks because he hasn't become a bad striker over night.

There's some players you can be fickle with and others you can't.

Edit. Had him all season, captained him a few times for blanks and sitting at 20k so don't feel I need to panic and get rid of him, the season is on a nice path with him, the captaincy is the only issue around him but I'll stick it on him away for now until his home form picks up.

Captained Lukaku this week and will again against Brighton so there's no pressure for the captaincy while I see what happens with him.

100% yes. At 12.8 I just cant justify not having the armband on him weekly. He inspires zero confidence in me currently. The extra 2 million I could get from Kane to Morata could be used to create a far more balanced squad. Ive seen my ML lead dwindle the past few weeks as my closest rivals are consistenly outscoring me without Kane.

A non owner since he start.
      Currently 1k rank.

No Kane gives a brilliant balance in the team. Yes individually he can be dangerous, but when combined with other players, there are much better options.

Yes there's always this fear whenever he plays, but slowly that is decreasing. As 1 brace in 4 matches with 3 blanks won't hurt that much

You betcha, Jonty. I might get rid even if he does score, unless he does something sensational. We have a regular 1-2 goal machine in Salah, so if Kane's not a fire-and-forget captaincy option he's just not worth the money.

I'm happy so many of you will or have sold him.

Nailed on, great fixtures, explosive, but oh he does not score. Yep.. all 6 points behind the top scoring forward. Total rubbish.

I'm keeping. Don't think he was 100% against the Gooners, but still could of scored a brace.
Main reasons for keeping being I have a very good TV. Other top end strikers no more reliable to either score or captain. And finally there is so much value to be had in cheaper mids.

One more point which never seems to be mentioned. Kane has been in the Dream Team twice as many times as any other striker. Obviously when he does score, he scores big.

Is he playing for his FPL future? Yes, definitely. 7 blanks in 11 starts is simply not good enough, even more so when we consider his price. I'm not expecting a brace every week but some amount of consistency would be nice.

Re-post, sorry. Feel like I'm in deep trouble with team for first time this season. What to do:

    Elliot / Krul

    Azpi / Jones / Mee / Naughton / Mbemba

    Salah / Sterling / GroB / Carroll / Chalobah

    Kane / Lukaku / Kun

Have to ship out non-playing players as priority but have no cash ITB.
If Jones isn't fit, I'm thinking of shipping him for Daniels and then upgrading Chal to RLC.
If Jones is OK, the only moves I can see are Naughton to 4.4 and updrage Chal to RLC.

    Anyone got ideas?

Advice here? 1 FT 0.7 in bank

    Elliot
    Otamendi Jones Daniels
    Eriksen Sterling Salah RLC
    Kane Jesus Vardy

    Foster Carroll Mee Hunemeier

    - getting tired of Eriksen but fixtures good
    - want Morata and maybe Hazard but best to wait a week with Pool up next
    - Vardy needs to go but again fixtures decent
    - no Richarlison killing me. Can I go without?
    - Foster needs to go
    - Jesus needs to go for the busy period
    - Kane testing patience too!!!!

How the dynamics of value change so easily, 3heavys up top was essential at the start then the premium defenders where the flavour of the week but now undoubtably midfeild is where the big points are coming!

Just shows you have to be patient as everyone has their day.

Feel that Kane isn't 100%. Maybe even rested midweek or what do you think?

      Are you keeping Abraham?

Difficult price tag. Not many doing better at that price?

Assuming Bailly is fit and Mee is going to rise this week, is it worth doing Bailly > Mee this week and lose the potential Bailly points rather than Lowton this week? Is Mee that much better than Lowton.

WBA sacked Pulis. Should that concern us regarding Spurs prospects next weekend?

Could go either way that is a 1-0 or a 6-0 smashing.

Maybe not then, I know cover is a silly notion but at least if City score 4-5 he’s likely to be involved

      Who to ship first:

      A) Jones
      B) Sterling
      C) Carroll
      D) Aguero

Concerned that I won't have 11 players next week
